    a lovely read
This is a tale about the old West before the Wild West beyond the Mississippi claimed that title back, when the revolver had not yet made its mark upon the land of sagebrush and sand. It is the bittersweet tale of a young boy who watches the murder of his father and becomes the dependent of a Ranger who has no truck with children but protects him nevertheless and brings him back toward his home in New York. While on the road, their adventures are perilous and many, but in the end the boy finds his way back to become a quiet and steady man who remembers the Ranger who helped him grow up
A boy stranded in early America
This book is interesting on two levels. First, it is the story of a gun, the origin of the Colt revolver, a pistol that allowed the holder to deliver multiple shots from a moving platform with only one hand. The technology is interesting without being too complex and boring for the reader. The viewpoint is appropriately neutral, neither too pro- or anti-gun. Second, and more important, it is a type of coming of age story about a boy on the frontier in the 1830s, a sort of eastern Huck Finn. If you enjoy historical fiction set in early America, I think you will find this book rewarding.
    Enjoyable Adventure
The Road to Reckoning kept me involved but I did read it in one go on a flight between Melbourne and Shanghai.
Not being American the prose was okay to me so not sure if it was accurate or not.
The characters were believable and you really had sympathy for the 12 year old and what was up against him.
    A good story overall.
    A fun read.
It was an enjoyable read for me. I liked the historical references to the early 19th century frontier culture and the evolution of personal firearms. My only gripe is that the British author seems to share the British contempt for privately owned firearms, especially handguns.
    grear read !
really enjoyed the book ; interesting characters, great presentation, lots of suspence. loved the narrative about the land and towns and historical points.

    Publisher's Summary:
When Pope Alexander Borgia dispatches Damiata, a beautiful courtesan, to the remote fortress city of Imola in Northern Italy to learn the truth behind the murder of his beloved son, she knows she cannot fail, for the Pope holds her own son hostage.
Once there, Damiata falls under the spell of the charismatic Duke Valentino Borgia, whose own life is threatened by the condottieri, a powerful cabal of mercenary warlords.
As the murders multiply, Damiata's search for the killer grows more urgent. And so she enlists the help of an obscure Florentine diplomat, Niccolò Machiavelli, and an eccentric military engineer, Leonardo da Vinci. Together they begin to decipher the killer's taunting riddles: Leonardo with his groundbreaking "science of observation" and Machiavelli with his new "science of men."
Traveling across a land torn apart by war, Damiata and Machiavelli enter a labyrinth of ancient superstition and erotic obsession to discover at its center a new face of evil and a terrible secret - a secret is still to be found within the lines of Machiavelli's most controversial book, The Prince.
    Members Reviews:
    Niccolo Machiavelli, Private Eye
If youâve read The Prince, you probably think you know the work of Niccolo Machiavelli. Chances are, you think of him â as I always did â as the Renaissance figure who lionized a lying, cheating, brutal scoundrel as the ideal political and military leader. Having read The Malice of Fortune, I know better now.
This historical novel, framed as a murder mystery in which Machiavelli plays the part of the detective, lays out the basis on which he wrote The Prince and illuminates his relationship with Cesare Borgia, known widely then as Duke Valentino, the subject of that famous book. The Malice of Fortune is based on historian and journalist Michael Ennisâ intensive research into primary sources, its characters and the events it portrays all solidly grounded in historical evidence. Machiavelli and Borgia did, indeed, have a relationship that verged on intimate.
The novel is set in Central Italy in 1502-3, with the action moving to and from Rome and through a succession of minor cities and towns where Duke Valentino and his troops were billeted. Machiavelli has been dispatched by the town fathers of Florence to follow Valentino and report his observations along the way, as their city feared a calamitous attack by the mercenary condottieri with whom Valentino was then negotiating a peace treaty. In the town of Imola, Machiavelli meets the bewitching courtesan known as Madonna Damiata, who has come in search of evidence that will point to the murder of Duke Gandia, her lover and father of her son. She quickly embroils Machiavelli in her search. They proceed on the assumption that one of the leaders of the condottieri is the murderer â but which one, and under what circumstances, is entirely unclear.
The Duke of Gandia, born Giovanni or Juan Borgia, is Duke Valentinoâs (Cesare Borgiaâs) younger brother. The two are sons of the then-reigning Pope, the notoriously corrupt Rodrigo Borgia, who ruled as Pope Alexander VI.

    Publisher's Summary:
Vienna, 1948: The war is over, and as the initial phase of denazification winds down, the citizens of Vienna struggle to rebuild their lives amid the rubble.
Anna Beer returns to the city she fled nine years earlier upon discovering her husbands infidelity. She has come back to find him and, perhaps, to forgive him. Traveling on the same train from Switzerland is 18-year-old Robert Seidel, a schoolboy summoned home to his stepfathers sickbed and the secrets of his familys past. As Anna and Robert navigate a damaged, unrecognizable city, they cross paths with a war-widowed American journalist, a hunchbacked young girl, and a former POW whose primary purpose is to survive, by any means. Meanwhile, in the shells of burned-out houses and beneath the bombed-out ruins, a ghost of a man, his head wrapped in a red scarf, battles demons from his past and hides from a future deeply uncertain for all.
In The Crooked Maid, Dan Vyleta returns to the shadows of a war-darkened Vienna, in a thrilling and atmospheric story of blame, guilt, and restitution.
    Members Reviews:
    Ripping yarn
Vyleta is a fine writer and this is a good book. My Wife and I have both read it and we've sent a copy to a friend deployed in Erbil. Hoping for a new book from Dan Vyleta soon.
    Excellen novel of post-war Vienna
"The Crooked Maid", by Dan Vylenta, is not a particularly easy read. It is set in post-war Vienna and is the sequel to Vylenta's previous book, "The Quiet Twin". Normally I'd advise reading the first novel in a series before reading the second, but in this case, each could be stand-alone novels. While many characters continue from one book to the other, a good knowledge of the first book isn't needed to read and appreciate the second.
Vienna in 1948 was a cold, frightening place. Like Germany, Austria had been cut up into "Allied zones" after the war, but unlike Germany, Austria was finally reunited in 1955 when the four allied powers recognised an Austrian-led government. In 1948, Austrian soldiers who had been captured and held in Soviet prisoner-of-war camps were returning home. They had not been released at war's end in 1945, and, actually some Austrians were held and not released until the early 1950's. But upon returning home, these soldiers were integrated into the social system in haphazard ways. In Vylenta's novel, not only do some Austrian soldiers return to Vienna, but so do a 30ish woman - Anna Beer - and a young man she meets on the Paris/Vienna train. Both had ties to Vienna and both had lived for a few years in France. Anna was returning to see her estranged husband, Dr Anton Beer, and young Robert Seidel was returning to the home of his mother and step-father.
But both Anna Beer and Robert Seidel have left ghosts back in Vienna and each is confronted by problems when they return to the city. Dr Beer, who had been looking forward to reuniting with his wife - or at least trying to face their problems - is not at the apartment to meet his returning wife. He's missing after having returned to Vienna from the Soviet prisoner-of-war camp. Robert's family is in an uproar because his older step-brother stands accused of killing his father (Robert's step-father). And Robert's mother is a drug dependent zombie.
