    Publisher's Summary:
IN THE TRADITION OF WIDE SARGASSO SEA, HAVISHAM IS THE ASTONISHING PRELUDE TO CHARLES DICKENS'S GREAT EXPECTATIONS.
Before she became the immortal and haunting Miss Havisham of Great Expectations, she was Catherine, a young woman with all of her dreams ahead of her. Spry, imperious, she is the daughter of a wealthy brewer. But she is never far from the smell of hops and the arresting letters on the brew house wall - HAVISHAM - a reminder of all she owes to the family name and the family business.
Sent by her father to stay with the Chadwycks, Catherine discovers elegant pastimes to remove the taint of her family's new money. But for all her growing sophistication, Catherine is anything but worldly, and when a charismatic stranger pays her attention, everything - her heart, her future, the very Havisham name - is vulnerable.
In Havisham, Ronald Frame unfurls the psychological trauma that made young Catherine into Miss Havisham and cursed her to a life alone, roaming the halls of the mansion in the tatters of the dress she wore for the wedding she was never to have.

Don' t be a fool for love.
It has been delightful revisiting the characters of "Great Expectations." This book is a development of the world of Miss Havisham before her sealing herself in the most famous wedding gown in literary history. My problem lies in the development of the betrayal that caused her downfall. She has been trained with the cunning of a mind for business and groomed by the experts of society. In trusting her lover, the reader screams for her to wake up. The depth of the plot against her just builds beyond believing her duplicity.
Of course we know she will be left at the alter. I would have liked to have the plot against her be more subtle. While I am at it, I wish the author had left out much of the verse. The point of her classical training could have been made with fewer references which felt like padding. A mind who can twist the magnificently distant Estella into a tool against men, could perhaps grasped more about the fall devised by this author. It seems a bit lame, but I cannot escape the fact that Miss Havisham in this book is hampered by the masculine viewpoint of an author writing about a female. She just misses ringing true. However Estella is a triumph of writing, and I enjoyed her completely. Perhaps it is no accident that she is a female raised with the morals Miss Havisham believes belong to a man. In this character, the author shines.
Having said all this, I still enjoyed this novel. The prose when not bogged with verse is convincingly of the Dickens genre without undo twisting of modern English. I am a fan of setting development, and this book does it well. The "rich people porn" on the trappings of wealthy characters is intriguing. To me the book is worth reading, despite the flaws.
    Whatever Happened to Miss Havisham!?
"Havisham" is one of those books that starts off slowly and then builds to a crescendo as it moves along. Written with the hand of a clear and clean storyteller, it flows inevitably, grabbing our interest as Miss Havisham grows aware of her own world and circumstances.
Ronald Frame is an author of strong imagination who is obviously well-acquainted with Dickens and his London.

    Love in War
Carolyn G. Hart's "Brave Hearts" takes the reader from the blitz of London to the malaria infested jungles of the Philippines as star crossed lovers struggle to survive after the fall of Corregidor.
Catherine and Spencer Cavanaugh lead separate lives; under the cover of work he hides an affair with his secretary, Peggy. His wife, Catherine discovers a love that gives life to her barren existence.
A promotion of great consequence drives him to take both women to Manila during the last days before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Jack Mcquire uses his press papers to follow Catherine, to protect the his love with his life against government officials that weigh the gold of a fallen nation against the lives of its representatives.
This thriller/love story is not the cozy for which Ms. Hart is famous, but a graphically explicit story of a country at war, told from the stand point of a crack reporter. A different side of Ms. Hart and an excellent read.

    Manila to Mindanao
I lived on Mindanao for eight years and heard many true stories of life during WWII. I think I was expecting true stories and not a romance. This was not my cup of tea.
    Enjoyable and interesting
My second taste of Carolyn Hart's fiction after last month's impressive introduction to her work with Death By Surprise. Brave Hearts is a standalone book that was originally published back in the late 1980's. The novel revolves around US diplomat, Spencer Cavanaugh, his wife Catharine and a journalist, Jack Maguire whom she crosses paths with at a dinner at the Ritz, during the time of the Blitz.
The Cavanaugh's are locked in a loveless marriage, but still bound together by the needs of Spencer's career and the necessity of portraying a certain image to the US's allies during the early days of WW II. As the novel unfolds we follow the three leads and their complicated personal lives from war-torn London to the Far East and Manila before the Japanese strike at Pearl Harbour. The subsequent invasion of the Philippines and desperate retreat of the US forces does little to smooth the path towards true love.
It would be fair to say, I didn't enjoy this quite as much as the previous novel of hers that I read.

What did you love best about El Evangelio del Traidor [The Gospel of the Traitor]?
Es un viaje en el tiempo al siglo I. Cierra los ojos, oyes la narración y te trasladas a otro mundo. Soberbio. Espectacular. ¿Qué más decir? Si te gusta la novela histórica vas a beber este libro.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Por supuesto Marco Marcio, Markos, un centurión de la Legión X

    Publisher: Audible Studios for Bloomsbury
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 17 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Spirited Henrietta wishes she was the kind of doctor's wife who knew exactly how to deal with the daily upheavals of war. But then, everyone in her close-knit Devonshire village seems to find different ways to cope: There's the indomitable Lady B, who writes to Hitler every night to tell him precisely what she thinks of him; the terrifyingly efficient Mrs. Savernack, who relishes the opportunity to sit on umpteen committees and boss everyone around; flighty, flirtatious Faith who is utterly preoccupied with the latest hats and flashing her shapely legs; and then there's Charles, Henrietta's hard-working husband who manages to sleep through a bomb landing in their neighbour's garden.
With life turned upside down under the shadow of war, Henrietta chronicles the dramas, squabbles, and loyal friendships that unfold in her affectionate letters to her "dear childhood friend" Robert. Warm, witty, and perfectly observed, Henrietta's War brings to life a sparkling community of determined troopers who pull together to fight the good fight with patriotic fervour and good humour.
Henrietta's War is part of The Bloomsbury Group, a new library of books from the early 20th-century chosen by readers for readers.

Heart-warming and charming story of civilian WWII
I love this well-written epistolary novel, and have read it many, many times in paperback. The only reason I didn't give the performance and overall rating five stars is that I already had a set inner voice for Henrietta and the recording didn't match it...that is my issue, not the narrator's. She does a terrific job; I just had been "listening" in my head to Henrietta so many times that it took some adjusting. The overall treatment of civilian life in WWII Britain is terrifically well-done, with comedy used to handle privations and annoyances and worse. Highly recommended.
    reader
If you could sum up Henrietta's War in three words, what would they be?
I was prepared to buy the second part, Henrietta sees it through, but I listened to the audio sample thinking it would be the same fantastic Mandy Gasson and found that the reader is a different one, slow, someone who sounds as if they were learning to read. Sadly, I will wait until if you offer the novel with a different reader

Hilary Mantel gelang es, aus dem kitschig-verstaubten Genre der historischen Fiktion große Literatur zu machen. Der Sogkraft ihrer präzisen Erzählung kann man sich kaum entziehen.

    Publisher's Summary:
Margaret Sullivan dines with politicians, rebels, and spies. She is an admired journalist with the Chicago Tribune publishing under a male nom de plume. Her unscrupulous husband is a prominent attorney and power broker with aspirations of his own. They are well-connected members of Chicago's 1880s Irish elite.
On her trip to Ireland to do research for a book she is writing, Margaret meets a charming one-armed Irish rebel named Michael and finds herself attracted to him and his ideas for liberating Ireland. While traveling through the stone-walled back roads of the island, Margaret sees for herself how the poor are treated. She breaks her vow never to get involved, and soon questions if she can ever go back to her old superficial life in Chicago again. Overcome with her new found emotions and strong desire to help, Margaret finds herself easily convinced by Mrs. Delia Parnell that women can be just as crucial in the fight for Ireland's independence as men.
Back home in Chicago, Margaret publishes articles hoping to gain support in America for Michael's cause. That is until he is arrested. Desperate, she turns to her jealous, devious husband for help... but he has a hidden agenda of his own.
Torn between her career as a journalist and compassion for those overseas, she finds herself trapped by her own aspirations. Soon things spin out of control both at home and abroad, and Margaret has to decide how much she is willing sacrifice for Micheal and her love for Ireland. For The Love of Ireland is a historical novel of love and loyalty, deception and honesty. It is about women fighting against traditional roles and gender discrimination during the 1880s. For The Love of Ireland is a work of fiction woven around actual events of the Irish Land League, a Chicago couple and the covert activities of the Clan na Gael.

    A Decent Historical Love Story
Would you try another book from Judy Leslie and/or Susanna Burney?
I don't think I would, unless it promised to deliver more real history.
Has For the Love of Ireland turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. There are great authors in this genre.
Did Susanna Burney do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
The narrator did a decent job of differentiating characters, but may have over-acted the villains.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
It didn't spark much of a reaction at all. The really poignant dramatic scenes were not well-developed, lacking background, and so I did not care much about the outcome. The time in Ireland was a drive-by treatment at best.
    Any additional comments?
If the heroine had been more admirable and the history more interesting, I'd have like it better.
    An Informative and Engaging Story
What about Susanna Burneys performance did you like?
Susanna Burney does a good job narrating the story. Her female voices are enjoyable and her male voices, convincing. Her pacing is excellent. She captures the tone and mood of the story, and it is easy to listen to her narration.
    Any additional comments?
I found this book to be engaging and detailed in a way that allows you to connect with the storyline, the characters, and the setting. If you like historical fiction about Ireland with women at the focal point, then this is a book you can easily enjoy.

New England, 1898: The Prescott Family is Boston. In that bygone golden age, Patriarch Charles presides over both his shipping line and family with a sure and strong hand, while wife Jocelyn is feeling her authority usurped by her powerfully minded mother-in-law, Augusta. Their children, Marietta, Aurora, and Barton find themselves trying to make their way in a constantly changing world - filled with social upheaval and technological advancements. The Prescotts' house staff goes about their duties under the supervision of the taciturn butler, Williams. Effortlessly integrating historical events into its narrative (including the second running of the American Marathon - later renamed the Boston Marathon), and filled with intrigue, warmth, and drama writ large, the Colonial Radio Theatre invites you into the Prescott household for an evocative, unforgettable depiction of Boston life as lived by those who set the pace. Williams has set an extra place for you at the table - won't you join us on Beacon Hill?

    Stop With This One
What would have made Beacon Hill - Series 1 better?
This is by far the best of these series of productions. The second, third and fourth progressively devolve into moral depravity. It became a 21st century drama set in the late 19th century. The society the writer depicts is in no way an adequate representation of the moral climate of that era.
What was most disappointing about Jerry Robbinss story?
The characters continually make self destructive choices with predictable consequences. The listener is hurled from one to another before having no time to recuperate between them.
Which character as performed by the narrators was your favorite?
    None
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
This first in the series was somewhat pleasant; however, it ends with a cliffhanger.
    Any additional comments?
I regret losing my 4 credits on this production and those that followed.
