From the ashes of war rise the secrets of its darkest hearts
In the wake of the Battle of Waterloo, Paris is a house divided. The triumphant Bourbons flaunt their victory with lavish parties, while Bonapartists seek revenge only to be captured and executed. Amid the turmoil, British attach and Intelligence Agent Malcolm Rannoch and his wife, Suzanne, discover that his murdered half-sister, Princess Tatiana Kirsanova, may have borne a child - a secret she took to the grave. And Malcolm suspects there was more than mere impropriety behind her silence
As Malcolm and Suzanne begin searching for answers, they learn that the child was just one of many secrets Tatiana had been keeping. The princess was the toast of Paris when she arrived in the glamorous city, flirting her way into the arms of more than a few men - perhaps even those of Napoleon himself - and the father must be among them. But in the melee of the Napoleonic Wars, she was caught up in a deadly game, and now Malcolm and Suzanne must race against time to save the child from a similar fate

The Rannochs Feel Almost Real
I am totally absorbed in this series. I know the word love is overused, but I really do love this couple. I don't even care what their names have changed to (although I do think it was a silly thing for any publisher to do), I am riveted by their story.
I find Malcolm's emotional distance attractive, while Suzanne exudes elegant sophistication - together they make a perfect couple. Grant is extremely skillful with her characterizations and this couple seems almost real. These books have it all - divided loyalties, simmering mysteries, past loves, present affairs, unrequited yearnings - Grant just offers a reader so many tantalizing unknowns and hints of delicious secrets yet to be unraveled.
Clearly, I enjoy the Rannochs and have read all the stories so far written. Knowing what will soon occur in their lives has made reading this story particularly interesting and entertaining. Having said that, and having highly recommended them all, I think if I were forced to rank my favorite tale, this would be at the bottom of the list. Not because it was in any way bad, but just that the others were so very good.
This book seemed vaguely reminiscent of the previous book, utilizing many of the same characters in the same roles and I found myself a little less intrigued by the mystery of Tania's child than the other murder mysteries. I was also slightly disappointed that more of the book wasn't more dedicated to the Rannoch's relationship - which I love to see unfold. However, the writing is so good and I so enjoyed the book despite these small quibbles that I probably shouldn't even mention any issues.
If you enjoyed the others, you will most definitely enjoy this one as well.
Not just one, nor even just two . . .
. . . but enough affairs that the reader loses count after about a hundred pages.
