    Author: Nora Hague
    Narrator: Mary Peiffer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 31 hrs and 12 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-11-12
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Complex and sophisticated, sensuous and sexy, Nora Hague's eloquent debut novel, Letters from an Age of Reason, is set amid two historical hotbeds of racial tension, moral hypocrisy, and shifting sexual convention. The years in question are the tumultuous '60s - the 1860s. And the landscapes are those of the Civil War-era United States and Victorian England.
Miss Arabella Leeds, the teenage daughter of a prominent New York family, and Aubrey Paxton, the pampered "high-yellow" house servant of wealthy New Orleans slaveholders, are destined to meet and fall in love. But before their paths can cross, and their romance commence in London, each must forsake complacency and comfort, the familial and familiar, for a journey toward self-discovery and the allure of the forbidden. Arabella must abandon the gentlewoman's prescribed path and redefine her convictions - particularly those regarding her own sexuality - while Aubrey must acknowledge within himself a growing awareness of race and gender politics, and his place in a culture determined to ostracize him.
The pair make their unknowing way toward each other, encountering en route high adventure, erotic awakening, long-buried family secrets, and the racy underpinnings of corseted nineteenth-century society. Coincidence and correspondence steer them into the company of morphine addicts and occult practitioners, protofeminists and sexual outcasts, glib aristocracy and dire poverty. But for Aubrey and Arabella, the greatest challenge will lie in their passion for each other, which places them forever outside the mores and conventions of their time.
A romantic adventure rich with vivacity, humor, and historical detail, Letters from an Age of Reason is a beautifully tapestried tour-de-force whose exceptional depth, passion, and power are sure to resonate long after the final page is turned.

    Praise for Hague!!
Nora Hague's "Letters from an Age of Reason" submerges you into the complex lives of its main characters Arabella Leeds and Aubrey Paxton. It reads surprisingly accurate from a historical standpoint, and gets it's audience so emotionally involved with the characters that you'll find it difficult to put down. Arabella's exploration of her intelligence and sexuality leave the reader questioning the modern parallels between the two, and Aubrey's development from "high yellow" slave to free man is a voyage unto itself. Their intertwined lives, however, are the most pleasant surprise. Hague deserves praise for this glimpse into a time of racism, suppressed feminism, scandal, and sex.
    Lacking A Sense of Authenticity
    Lacking A Sense of Authenticity
This book is presented as journal entries and letters. Arabella Leeds is sixteen years old when we first read her journal. Aubrey Paxton is a handsome young man raised in the south, we learn about him through the letters he writes to his grandmother.
I really wanted to love this book, it starts with a very interesting story of how a misunderstanding can seem to take on a life of it's own and how people's reaction to a misunderstanding can change the course of future events.
I liked the setting, and got a kick when I read that Arabella was going to Ithaca, NY for a Ladies' Circle meeting to commune with the spirits.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Restoration is over and Robert Merivel, renowned physician and courtier to Charles II, now faces the anxieties of middle age. Questions crowd his mind: has he been a good father? Is he a fair master? Is he the King's friend or the King's slave? In search of answers, Merivel sets off for the French court. But Versailles leaves him in despair, until a chance encounter with a seductive Swiss botanist allows him to dream of an honourable future. But back home, his loyalty and medical skill are about to be tested to the limit, while the captive bear he has brought back from France begins to cause havoc....
With a cascade of lace at his neck and a laugh that can burst out of him in the midst of torment, Merivel is soulful, outrageous and achingly sad. His unmistakable, self-mocking voice speaks directly to us down the centuries. Get ready to laugh, prepare to weep - Robert Merivel is back in Rose Tremain's magical sequel to Restoration.

A Man of All Times, I say!
A difficult book to review. I was enthralled by the incredible tale of this very sad man. The narrator was amazing, the script brilliant but if a reader is not into history I would not recommend. However, if anything like me - go for it. It is memorable.
    A Wonderful Sequel
Rose Tremaine's 1989 novel, Restoration, was such a feast for the reader, so funny, so well-researched, so humane and so moving, that I doubted whether she could possibly succeed with a sequel, especially more than twenty years later. In fact, she pulls it off wonderfully. Though still liberally peppered with sex and low comedy, this is a more sombre tale. Merivel, King Charles and the other characters who careered through the pages of the first book, are fifteen years older. Old age and sickness are beginning to take their toll. The whole mood of the country has changed and disillusion with the monarch has set in. Merivel now bears the responsibility for the welfare of his teenage daughter, Margaret. Despite this, he is still a man inclined to pleasure, flawed but likeable, weak but disarmingly honest. It is this weakness that is the wellspring of the plot. When his daughter is given a place at court and Merivel finds himself alone in his big house, he decides to to set off for Versailles in search of a purpose and a position with Louis XIV. Instead he becomes enamoured of a captive bear and involved with the wife of a member of the Swiss Guard. What makes Tremaine a really first-class writer is the depth of her characterisation and the honesty of her writing. She is not afraid to tackle any subject. She goes wherever human beings go. There is a remarkable scene in a stagecoach in which a woman exposes herself to a group of male passengers that is simultaneously horrifying and hilarious. I can't imagine anyone else writing it with such ease and such obvious relish. I enjoyed this book enormously. It made me feel glad to be alive and this recording was perfectly pitched.
    Absorbing
I'm familiar with the narrator from Scandinavian crime fiction audiobooks, so it took me a short while to adjust, but once I did, Sean Barrett became utterly convincing as Merivel, and the many other characters, and this wonderful novel has fixed him in my memory like an old friend. Merivel is very human, warts and all, and he felt very real to me, and so did the period he inhabits thanks to the wonderful quality of the writing.

    Publisher's Summary:
The best-selling author of The Madonnas of Leningrad returns with a breathtaking novel of love, madness, and devotion set against the extravagant royal court of 18th-century St. Petersburg.
Born to a Russian family of lower nobility, Xenia, an eccentric dreamer who cares little for social conventions, falls in love with Andrei, a charismatic soldier and singer in the Empress's Imperial choir. Though husband and wife adore each other, their happiness is overshadowed by the absurd demands of life at the royal court and by Xenia's growing obsession with having a child - a desperate need that is at last fulfilled with the birth of her daughter. But then a tragic vision comes true, and a shattered Xenia descends into grief, undergoing a profound transformation that alters the course of her life. Turning away from family and friends, she begins giving all her money and possessions to the poor. Then, one day, she mysteriously vanishes.
Years later, dressed in the tatters of her husband's military uniform and answering only to his name, Xenia is discovered tending the paupers of St. Petersburg's slums. Revered as a soothsayer and a blessed healer to the downtrodden, she is feared by the royal court and its new Empress, Catherine, who perceives her deeds as a rebuke to their lavish excesses.
In this evocative and elegantly written tale, Dean reimagines the intriguing life of Xenia of St. Petersburg, a patron saint of her city and one of Russia's most mysterious and beloved holy figures. This is an exploration of the blessings of loyal friendship, the limits of reason, and the true costs of loving deeply.

    Perfect voice for this story
Would you consider the audio edition of The Mirrored World to be better than the print version?
I have not read the print version but - after this most effective reading - I will definitely consider it.
What did you like best about this story?
It is difficult to right about saints. Goodness, when depicted, often comes off as bland - somehow less interesting than evil. Not so for this book. Xenia's turn towards the disadvantaged of St. Petersburg, while surprising at first, has a logic of its own that the book does a fine job of developing.
What about Yelena Shmulensons performance did you like?
Her voice had lovely modulation and convincing Russian accents. She was able to make each character sound distinctively.
Who was the most memorable character of The Mirrored World and why?
though the story would go nowhere without its narrator, Dasha, its beatingheart is beyond doubt the character of Xenia.
    Any additional comments?
Calming and thoughtful, I found The Mirrored World to be the perfect commuter listen. Xenia's attitude was a welcome corrective to hectic traffic. Listen and you'll know exactly what I mean.
Good Plot Line with Admirable Character Developmen
Would you consider the audio edition of The Mirrored World to be better than the print version?
I didn't read the print version.
Would you recommend The Mirrored World to your friends? Why or why not?
I would recommend the book to a woman who understands sacrifice.

    Absolutely love Sean Beans voice!!!
He is a really wonderful narrator, and especially bringing Shape to life again in audio.
    An enjoyable trip of nostalgia.
This brought back memories of when I was a kid when me and my dad would watch Sharpe together on TV. Hearing Sean Bean's voice again as Richard Sharpe as well as his take on the other characters was an absolute joy to hear. The only thing that could make this audio version even better would be if they played the theme tune at the start of the book, but I might as well watch the series for that.
    Bean's accents limited
Bean's accents were sometimes limited but characterisation was good. Shame to abridge an excellent novel!
    Amazing Story
Amazing story narrated by Sharpe's actor himself, I would recommend it to any one who likes action filled stories with amazing characters.
    Great
It's a great listen a strong bold storyline with plenty of imagery going of in your head it just makes me buy the next one

    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Francine du Plessix Grays beautifully realized historical novel reveals the untold love story between Swedish aristocrat Count Axel von Fersen and Marie Antoinette. The romance begins at a masquerade ball in Paris in 1774, when the dashing nobleman first meets the mesmerizing 19-year-old dauphine, wife of the reclusive prince who will soon become Louis XVI. This electric encounter launches a love affair that will span the course of the French Revolution.
As their relationship deepens, Fersen becomes a devoted companion to the entire royal family. Roaming the halls of Versailles and visiting the private haven of Le Petit Trianon, he discovers the deepest secrets of the court, even learning the startling erotic details of Marie Antoinettes marriage to Louis XVI. But his new intimacy with Marie Antoinette and her family is disrupted when the events of the American Revolution tear Fersen away. Moved by the cause, he joins French troops in the fight for American independence.
He returns to find France on the brink of disintegration. After the Revolution of 1789 the royal family is moved from Versailles to the Tuileries. Fersen devises an escape for the family and their young children (Marie-Thérèse and the dauphin - whom many suspect is in fact Fersens son). The failed attempt leads to a more grueling imprisonment, and the family spends its excruciating final days captive before the king and queen face the guillotine.
Grieving his lost love in his native Sweden, Fersen begins to sense the effects of the French Revolution in his homeland. Royalists are now targets, and the sensuous aristocratic world of his youth is fast vanishing. Fersen is incapable of realizing that centuries of tradition have disappeared, and he pays dearly for his naïveté, losing his life at the hands of a savage mob that views him as a pivotal member of the ruling class.
Scion of Swedens most esteemed nobility, Fersen came to be seen as an enemy of the country he loved. His fate is symbolic of the violent speed with which the events of the 18th century transformed European culture. Expertly researched and deeply imagined, The Queens Lover is a fresh vision of the French Revolution and the French royal family as told through the love story that was at its center.

    not what the title suggests
If you???re looking for Phillipa Gregory or a Georgian bodice ripper in a French setting, keep looking. Because I had enjoyed the author???s excellent but dry bio of Simone Weil, I wondered at a historical novel about well, the queen???s lover. It???s more in the line of an imaginative fictionalized bio or novelized history??? and like the best of these, though all story lines may not have always come from a documentary source, you emerge from the listen feeling like you know the characters better than in traditional bio. It's as much about Marie Antoinette and the times as von Ferson himself.
If you love historical fiction rich in period detail this is for you ??? you???ll get a good picture of things like the extent of the Versailles vermin, human and rodent. She seems to get the larger historical lines interwoven well, and correctly too. Instead of trying for a half-here-half-there, half modern kind of language, she tells the tale in modern English with modern idioms.

    Publisher's Summary:
The year is 1803. Swashbuckling, ribald, and irreverent hero Ethan Gage has outsmarted wily enemies and survived dangerous challenges across the globe, from the wilds of the American frontier to the pyramids of Egypt. Now the rakish hero finds himself in the Caribbean with his wife, Astiza, on a desperate hunt to secure the lost treasure of Montezuma - a legendary hoard rumored to have been hidden from Cortés's plundering Spanish conquistadors.
Hot on his heels are British agents who want the gold to finance a black slave revolt in Saint-Domingue, robbing hostile France of its richest colony. The French, too, seek the treasure for the secrets it contains, the key to an incredible new means of invasion that can ensure Britain's defeat - on its own land.
Caught between the French and the rebel slave forces, Ethan and Astiza are in a race for gold and glory that will thrust them into the center of a bloody struggle for freedom as they try to rescue their son. And this time, Gage's luck may be running out.
Brilliantly combining science, history, mythology, and wit, William Dietrich has woven a larger-than-life tale that sees Ethan embroiled in the Napoleonic era's ideals, opportunism, and inventions, which gave rise to the modern world. Filled with intrigue, voodoo, a hurricane, violent political unrest, and unexpected passion, The Emerald Storm is Dietrich's most captivating work to date.

    A Most Excellent Adventure
Ethan Gage is maturing but he still finds himself in the middle of trouble. Problem is that his young son 'Harry' and his beautiful wife 'Astiza' are wrapped up in his adventures without their will. Leon Martel a renegade police man kidnaps Harry and the adventure is on. Description of Caribbean and the period are excellent. The battle and fight scenes, even the storm at sea are perfect that you don't get lost in the action. John Pruden does a real good job with the voices and narrates this book in the series without missing a beat. Could be the best of the series. Well worth sticking with the series.

    Publisher's Summary:
A masterful novel that confronts the dilemmas of race, family, and forbidden love in the wake of Americas Civil War....
Fifteen years after the publication of his acclaimed novel Masons Retreat, Christopher Tilghman returns to the Mason family and the Chesapeake Bay in The Right-Hand Shore.
It is 1920, and Edward Mason is making a call upon Miss Mary Bayly, the current owner of the legendary Mason family estate, the Retreat. Miss Mary is dying. She plans to give the Retreat to the closest direct descendant of the original immigrant owner that she can find. Edward believes he can charm the old lady, secure the estate and be back in Baltimore by lunchtime.
Instead, over the course of a long day, he hears the stories that will forever bind him and his family to the land. He hears of Miss Marys grandfather brutally selling all his slaves in 1857 in order to avoid the reprisals he believes will come with Emancipation. He hears of the doomed efforts by Wyatt Bayly, Miss Marys father, to turn the Retreat into a vast peach orchard, and of Miss Mary and her brother growing up in a fractured and warring household. He learns of Abel Terrell, son of free blacks who becomes head orchardist, and whose family becomes intimately connected to the Baylys and to the Mason legacy.
The drama in this richly textured novel proceeds through vivid set pieces: on rural 19th-century industry; on a boyhood on the Eastern Shore of Maryland; on the unbreakable divisions of race and class; and, finally, on two families attempting to save a son and a daughter from the dangers of their own innocent love. The result is a radiant work of deep insight and peerless imagination about the central dilemma of American history.

The Right-Hand Shore is the dark, magisterial creation of a writer with an uncanny feel for the intersections of place and character in American history. His readers will want to hear more stories from the Eastern Shore estate. Lets just hope he doesnt keep us waiting for another 16 years. (

    Faulkneresque
This is a very nicely written plantation saga with plenty of sweep and character, as well as an interesting take on race in the antebellum years. The reader is solid enough, but ought to come to Eastern Maryland and hear the local accent someday. His white characters all sounded like Deep South caricatures.
    Artful writing.
Would you listen to The Right-Hand Shore again? Why?
Yes, and I have a companion Kindle addition because this Author's turns of phrase are so vivid and artful. We live near this area and found this book intriguing. Looking forward to listening to his first book about Mason's Retreat.

I WATCHED ROOTS THE SERIES,MANY YEARS AGO ON TV..
Would you consider the audio edition of Roots to be better than the print version?
IT IS A VERY GOOD VERSION OF THE BOOK, HAVING READ THE BOOK AND WATCHED THE TV SERIES, I CAN SAY THAT I'VE REALLY ENJOYED LISTENING TO THIS STORY. THE AUDIO VERSION HAS SO MUCH MORE INFORMATION THAN THE TELEVISION SERIES. I CAN REALLY RECOMEND ROOTS TO ANYONE WHO HAS AN INTEREST IN THIS KIND OF HISTORY. IT IS VERY SAD IN PARTS, BUT THERE IS ALSO HUMOUR,AS YOU FOLLOW THE LIVES OF THE CHARACTERS THROUGHOUT THE STORY.
WHAT MORE CAN I SAY? IT IS A REALLY GOOD LISTEN, I LISTENED TO ROOTS OVER SEVERAL DAYS. WHEN CLEANING, BAKING, IRONING ETC.IT TOOK ME AWAY TO THE TIME AND PLACE, WHERE THIS STORY BEGAN.
What did you like best about this story?
THAT THERE WAS SO MUCH MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE TIME BEFORE, AND AFTER KUNTA KINTE WAS CAPUTURED.
Have you listened to any of Avery Brookss other performances? How does this one compare?
NO BUT I WOULD IF IT WAS ANYTHING LIKE THIS ONE.
    Any additional comments?
IN MY OPINION ROOTS IS A MUST LISTEN.
    amazing
This book had too be one of the best I have ever experienced, a story truly heart tugging, it really gets to the heart of slavery and the experiences of the generations. The whole story is the tales told from one generation to the next and I believe that Alex Haley did his best to keep the story true whilst county in the gaps.
The tv series is good and I do not feel like I have missed out on any of the experience of the book by having listened to it here on audible, in fact this is the first book I have listened to on here and I am now hooked.
    Truly amazing
    absolutely loved this production.
