Will the island survive?

When I got the chance to listen to a Janice Thompson audiobook I jumped at it, and with my fascination with historic hurricanes all it took was the title to grab my attention.

Now, I've read a number of Janice Thompson's contemporary romantic comedies, and she is one of my favorite authors, but Hurricane just added to my appreciation of her talent. Hurricane isn't a typical Janice Thompson book and is more serious in nature. Talk about nature, wow, this book chronicles the events of the 1900 Galveston hurricane that wrought unimaginable damage and suffering. I had heard of the hurricane before but this book totally opened my eyes to the extent of it. Hurricane takes you through the super-peaceful days leading up to, through the hurricane, and then the aftermath. Through Janice Thompson's excellent prose and the narrator's voice I could almost feel the wind and taste the rising salt waters.

One of my favorite things about the Audible audiobook is that, even though the book follows several characters both male and female, the narrator is a man. While listening I felt that Brent was actually the central character and that made me appreciate the narrator even more.

Hurricane is an exciting, heart-wrenching, tale of love, sacrifice, and finding out what is most important. Whether read or listened to Janice Thompson's story of the 1900 Galveston Hurricane will linger in the mind long after...

A tired series

I was disappointed with the last Bernie Gunther novel, "A man without breath" as I felt the franchise was running out of steam, plus the change of narrator from Jeff Harding to Paul Hecht had robbed the story of great characterisation. The only reason I listened to this was because of the return of Jeff Harding; wise-cracking Bernie himself in my view.

Sadly, polished narration does not change the fact that this is a tired series. For sure, Jeff does an accomplished job in terms of bringing all of the characters to life, but this series is in intensive care compared to the first "Berlin trilogy". The cracks are not as wise (or rapid-fire), the bad guys are not as scary, and the sex and violence is mushy compared to the hard edge of the earlier novels. Bernie is older now and it shows, his steely cynicism feels more like whining bitterness; he is softer, maybe a bit flabby and just ...... tired.

Another Bernie Gunther Solid.

A real treat for Gunther lovers. Narrator Jeff Harding is brilliant, as usual - the one true voice of Bernie Gunther.

You just have to love Bernie Gunther.

What made the experience of listening to The Lady from Zagreb the most enjoyable?

As someone who has read/listened to the whole Bernie Gunther series, this book ties up some of the gaps in his life towards the end of the war. In particular, if you wondered how he ended up married at the end of the war, this book fills that gap.

What other book might you compare The Lady from Zagreb to, and why?

The Bernie Gunther series continues, with plot twists and the romance with the Lady for Zagreb at the centre of the plot. In all some of the twists are now getting predictable, and the connection between the different crimes introduced throughout the novel are a bit far fetched. Never the less it is a good story.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

At first I found the narration a little tiresome, read in the American gumshoe style. However, the narration fits the Gunther character, and I got used to it after a while.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, although the story moves along at a pace, which made listening a pleasure.

Any additional comments?

Not the best Bernie Gunther novel, but a welcome addition to the collection.

Another great story.

Another good Bernie Gunther story. Never 100% convinced by the American accent but it doesn't detract from the performance for me.

El chocolate es oriundo de Mèxico conquistado en època de Carlos V, en el libro mencionan al chocolate pero en èpocas en que Juana la Loca ni siquiera se habìa casado con Felipe el Hermoso. Una novela histórica súper interesante, por muchas cosas entre ellas la forma en narra la situación socio-política y religiosa, la descripción delas diferntes ciudades, paisajes y el delicado trabajo de presentar a cada personaje dentro de su contexto histórico y el nivel de compromiso de cada uno delos personajes.

Me encanto la forma de narrar a través de cartas o correspondencia, una manera sencilla pero clara, fácil de leer y muy bien elaborado.

Recomiendo este libro a los amante de este genero de novelas, por su contenido histórico bien documentado y su maravillosa narración

Story was about a grandmother telling her granddaughter about her life and how she became the person she was today on her 85th birthday. Because it was a one person narrative you felt that she was personally telling you her story and it was a pleasant read.

A great summary of a wonderful story

Anita Diamant's The Boston Girl is a wonderful coming-of-age novel told in the first person by the main character, Addie Baum. Addie's granddaughter wants to know how Addie became the woman she is. Addie tells her about all the experiences that shaped her life, starting in 1915, when she was a 15 year-old girl living in North Boston with her Russian immigrant parents.

This Instaread summary touched on all those important moments in Addie's life. She's a smart young girl with a wonderful sense of humor and a great sense of compassion. A very likeable character the reader wants to root for. By the end, you feel you've made the 70 year journey with her. If you don't have the time to read the whole book, get this Instaread summary. It includes all the important characters and has a well-written analysis at the end. I really enjoyed reading it and learning about Addie's life and finding out just what made her the woman she became.

I've become a fan of these summaries for both fiction and non-fiction. They are inexpensive and give a concise overview of a title. I was curious about The Boston Girl and look forward to reading the full book.

I have absolutely loved Isabel Wolff's other books but this was quite a change from her others. Her writing is impeccable and reads as if someone were talking to you. I love stories weaved around WW II but this one was quite different as it focused on the Japanese occupation of the Pacific island of Java. I knew very little of this part of the war and although it was very enlightening to read, there were parts I had to skip because of the graphic torture and treatment of the prisoners. I'm very sensitive to any torture inflicted on people or animals and cannot hear or read about it at in any detail. However, this does not take away from this book which, as I stated above, is very well written, plotted, and researched. The ending is wonderful which is another reason I like her books. Few authors can achieve a well conceived ending. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the WW II period with a caution that they may have to skip over a few parts if they are squeamish about torture.

Accurate portrayal

I read a library copy of this book, and then immediately went to Amazon to buy three copies, one for me, and one for each of my two sisters. This book so closely parallels my mother's experience when she was a POW in Indonesia. I own several books about women who were in Japanese POW camps, but this one, though fiction, is well researched and is powerful and accurate.

A wonderful story

You so live with each and every person in this novel. You fell for them and want everything to turn out, but know it cant. I did not want to put it down until I finished. Very informative of the history of that part of the world.

Another great book !!

All of this Author's work is extraordinary. This book had me smiling, crying all within minutes. A great story gets you hooked and doesn't let go- this is one of those books. Read her other books as well, some are available via Kindle, others are paperback.

I love Isabel Wolff books

I love Isabel Wolff books, and get on the waiting list as soon as I know one is coming out. I could not put this one down. It was such a wonderful story - and the two main characters pulled me in from the start. It wasn't light hearted and funny like some of her books, but I loved it anyway. It has a touching message of hope and survival, and you find yourself emotionally attached to the characters.

Mr. Pope takes an actual historical event and adopts it to his story of Nicholas Ramage, aka Captain Lord Ramage and his adventures on board His Majesty's Frigate Juno off the coast of Martinique during the early 1800's. The history behind this story may well be unique in the annals of British naval history, and Dudley Pope does it justice. The storytelling is compelling and exciting and Pope describes the geography and the action in a clear, understandable manner, making it easier to follow the story and not get bogged down in minutiae. I've been more impressed with Pope's skills as a storyteller with each successive Ramage novel.

Quick and entertaining read

Very entertaining read. I have now read most of this series and continue to enjoy them. They are not a detailed or as filled-out as O'Brien's Aubrey/Maturin series, but still a fun read.

Good ripping sea yarn

It might not be quite Hornblower, but very close; the series follows the career of Lord Nicholas Ramage, from his joining the Royal Navy as a boy, and his progression thought the ranks, and years. he author was a navel man, and had sailer the Caribbean , so he knew the area that those stories are set in;While not always factual, he sticks to the basic historical time line, and his description of the island is correct, and very vivid, as is his action description of war at sea. I have sailed most of those waters, and while not experiencing been shot at by French Frigates, it does bring back memories of those places. The difficulties that Ramage faces in his posting, and how he over comes them is well set out,

Fiction copies real life.

Dudley Pope has once again put together a novel wrapped in real life circumstances and accounts. This story pits Ramage against the French in the Caribbean.Pope draws on a cleaver and ingenious engineering feat which the English actually pulled off in one of their actions against the French in that area. Any description of the action would ruin the story. Suffice it to say that the story is well developed and kept my interest throughout. I recommend it. JCY

Addictive series but watch out for duplicates!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is a very engaging series, but it is very frustrating to try to get into a series when the Book 1 and Book 2 are not available as recorded books in the U.S.--- Audible offers Book 3 under two different titles (A War of Flowers and Scent of Secrets) and Book 4 under two titles ( In Pursuit of Pearls and Faith and Beauty) which is confusing--it looks like Audible offers four titles in the series, and in reality it is only two. Readers should be advised to check the length of the books to avoid re-purchasing the book you just read!

What other book might you compare A War of Flowers to and why?

It is in the same time period and flavor of The Milliner's Secret and The Beast's Garden. In nonfiction, Erik Larsen's "In the Garden of the Beasts" covers much of the same factual material.

Have you listened to any of Julie Teals other performances before? How does this one compare?

I had not listened to Julie Teal before and was impressed with her ability to clearly delineate the characters without resorting to silly voices.

Longwinded Confusing at times

I thought the narrative was great and really aided the delivery of the story. I loved loved the first 2 books in this trilogy but found this one overly long with not a lot going on I would read another book by this author but could not recommend this one.
