Title: Mysterium I: Rome

Author: Mitchel Fidel

Narrator: Phillip J Mather

Format: Unabridged

Length: 5 hrs and 6 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-24-16

Publisher: Denouement Literary Agency, LLC

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 23 votes

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

Jesus of Nazareth has been dead for some 65 years. The eyewitnesses to this extraordinary life have died, often as martyrs, and only a scattered handful remain. Might anyone have resolved to interview those last few before it was too late, it being a matter of mind-boggling importance? What if someone had?

Mysterium I: Rome presents the story of a young Roman scholar who determines to do precisely that. This sleuth who has the will and the means to comb the Roman Empire for answers is Theophilus, "Lover of God". Opening his very first scroll of Christian scripture, and finding his own name there, catalyzes a series of events that seemingly promises a life mission full of heroic discovery. But soon, Theophilus has cause to wonder about the advisability of his investigation. Danger looms, while he is on the scent of the unfathomable in ominous cavities of a city where so very much is hidden. Catacombs. Forbidden archives. "Witches Hill", a.k.a. the Vatican.

In Rome, life is stupendously raw. Theophilus' adventures put him in congress with gladiators, prostitutes, torturers, crucifiers, conquerors, sorcerers, swindlers, schemers, and an aristocratic matron who insists that she is a daughter of the Beast. Pulled relentlessly toward ever more mystifying mysteries, Theophilus comes to realize that he has undertaken a quest after the secret of secrets.

Rome is the first book of a six-part Mysterium series. Mysterium I: Rome also contains Discussion Guide questions.

Rome

Any additional comments?

There are some items that I learned from this historical book about Rome. It's very interesting

Four stars w/ anticipation of future books

Where does Mysterium I: Rome rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

The writing and the narration are better than what I find in most books. Fidel does a good job of painting the early Roman culture and surroundings. Mather has just the right amount of energy in his delivery.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Mysterium I: Rome?

The most memorable moments were probably the sexual encounters. That is not to my liking and I would have preferred that they were not included. However, like much of this novel, I'm assuming that the author is trying to lay the ground work for what is to come in future volumes. I could be wrong. A great deal of Christian apostacy is included in this 5 hour book. My guess is that it's setting us up to discover how the young Theophilus comes to find the truth. If my guess is wrong, I would rate this book much lower than four stars.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Who really was Jesus?

Any additional comments?

I received this book at no charge in return for an unbiased review.

Cut the Erotica and It's a Decent Story

What did you like best about Mysterium I: Rome? What did you like least?

Good character development putting the story in the minds of the characters. Personally, I do not care for the erotica, but if you want it, you'll find it.

What about Phillip J Mathers performance did you like?

The narrator did an excellent job with what I would call his strong, classical, continental voice.

Any additional comments?

Having listened to this first book in a series it strikes me as wanting to be a DiVinci code with erotica.

Great Historical Romance with Magic and Mystery!!

I loved this book! The writing was absolutely superb, the characters so well-drawn, and the mystery so enticing that I was sucked in immediately and couldn't put this book down. Brynn Chapman has become one of my favorite authors. The ending left room for more to happen to these characters, so I sincerely hope there will be a sequel.

The Violet Hour by Brynn Chapman - Brynn hits another home run!

I read and absolutely ADORED Boneseeker by Brynn last year, and I vowed to read everything that Brynn Chapman writes from now on. It was honestly that good! When I saw the tour for The Violet Hour, I jumped all over it, without ever reading the synopsis. Didn't need to. It's Brynn Chapman! No wrong can be done! And I was right. I ADORED The Violet Hour. I will go ahead and apologize now for all previous and future exclamation points!!!

So sorry about the delay in getting this review written. :( We have had some serious storms lately, and our power was out for almost 3 days, for the second time in as many weeks. Very frustrating. And very HOT without AC. Anyway, while I have power still *crossing fingers, knocking on wood*, here is my review!

Allegra is in Charleston, SC, set to perform on stage, as her father demands since she is where his coin comes from, when she finally decides she has had enough. She runs, off the stage and into the crowded Charleston streets, and meets up with her lady's maid, Sarah and together with hardly anything between them, they start a new life. Allegra is a cello prodigy, and she finds herself a position at Charleston's Fancy, an amusement park for the wealthy ran by the evil Silas, playing in the orchestra. There, she meets Jonesy, who is her fast friend, and maybe a love interest for a certain ladies maid?! She also meets Mr. Lefroy, and she is instantly drawn to him. Allegra is hunted, and LeFroy is haunted, and together things are going to change in ways they never could have imagined.

I am usually not a huge fan of historical fiction, but this is the second by Brynn Chapman that has sucked me in and held on tight, then spit me out the other side wanting MORE! Allegra was a fantastic character.

What a great series.

What a great series...got one book during a snow storm just to pass time between shoveling and couldn't put it down. Ended up reading all three books and using the skid loader to move the snow..haha...great read

Good story.

I loved this book but it had a lot of editing errors so therefore, I only gave it 4 stars.

I could relate to the hardship and dangers of living in the US in the 1800s

It took me a couple of chapters to get into the story. Each day I would read 3 or 4 chapters. Soon I was looking forward to to getting back to the Legend of the Dawn. I enjoy reading about the dreams, struggles sucesses and failures of the brave souls that discovered and formed our great nation. I found my self feeling for the characters struggling to surive in a harsh world.

If you enjoy stories of the early days of our country I recomend this book Legend of the Dawn. I am looking forward to J R WRIGHT'S After the Dawn

Reminiscent of "Jeremiah Johnson"

Reminiscent of "Jeremiah Johnson" but a slightly different story line. Looking for the second book of the series to see just how much it diverges from 'Johnson'. Should be interesting.

Got a little bit draggy in a few places but ...

Title: Barbara's War

Author: Fenella J. Miller

Narrator: Sandra Garston

Format: Unabridged

Length: 11 hrs and 40 mins

Language: English

Publisher: Fenella J Miller

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 5 votes

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

Caught up by the emotion of the moment, she agrees to marry John, her childhood friend who's leaving to join the RAF; but a meeting with Simon Farley, the son of a local industrialist, and an encounter with Alex Everton, a Spitfire pilot, complicate matters. With rationing, bombing, and the constant threat of death all around her, Barbara must unravel the complexities of her home life and the difficulties of her emotional relationships in this gripping coming-of-age wartime drama.

Members Reviews:

Written version a better option

Oh my, where to start? Normally I find the narration adds much to the telling of a story, especially when a British accent is involved, but not so in this case. Barbara's War may have been a decent historical/fiction/romance/mystery, but I was so distracted by the amateurish performance, it was hard to concentrate on anything except the terrible reading. It reminds me of what I may have sounded like at school reading a story to my fourth graders after lunch, only worse. Vocal inflections remained maddeningly the same, whether discussing new puppies or a murder. The reader's pauses after every line or two was distracting and the loss of momentum during what should have been discussions or arguments slowed the story-telling to a mind-numbing crawl. There was no differentiation between characters' voices: Grandpa and Barbara were basically the same. Was this really the performance of a professional, Audible?!

Choose the written version of Barbara's War, and save your credit.
