    Just as advertised
    Very good, tense thriller
Very good, tense thriller. Seems to have been well researched.
I want the end of the story, though. Don't keep us hanging!
Worth the time but cross check titles since sometimes appear under two different but same book.
Paul Eddy was investigative journalist for London Times.
Have read "Flint," "Flint's Law," ("Mandrake" = UK edition) as well as Flint's Code.
I wish he would write informed fiction again.
Well Written But A Little Overlong
Well written but a bit too long at 472 pages.
Details of sniper weaponry and usage are not convincing:
No sniper uses the .22 calibre.
1000ft (say 330 yards) is sharp-shooter range, not a typical sniper distance - 1000 yards would be more realistic.
A sniper needs to sight-in a weapon - he/she cannot pick up a strange weapon (even a model they are familiar with) and be accurate without pre-practice.

Fantasy? Not exactly. The plot is actually under way.
The Tenth Cow, the third novel by Aram Schefrin, takes the story to its limits, tracing what has already happened, and what could happen, through a brilliant cast of characters in Israel and America. Add polo, Kabbalah, the American president, and a strange love affair into the mix, and you get a rich stew of romance, satire and suspense - and a scary look at what might become the most important event of our time.

    Pass
I have to agree with the previous reader. The author/narrator is sufferings from a bad head cold and a lisp. He is very hard to follow, I couldn't figure out if it was the media that was skipping or the narrator. It seems like the author was all over the place. I waited the whole book for the plot to take off. It never does. Skip this one.
    Wrong stuff
This disjointed story of a plot to create disaster and thus bring on the messianic age is apparently intended as humorous -- but beware. The jokes are not funny, and the story, beginning with a mad cap trip to Jerusalem with little discernible motive and totally absurd incidents is about as easy to follow as the tunnel under the Temple Mount which appears early on. Added to generally unappealing plot, language and story-telling is the author's own quite odd reading.
Suffering something between a head cold and a lisp the reader is occassionally incomprehensible and never attractive.
    OMG - This is awful!
Terrible narration. Bad sound effects. Music between chapters is just dumb, and not a very good plot to boot. It's possible a professional narrator could have saved this audio book...not certain. Certainly seems like the author, who was the principal narrator, used family members to carry out character narration. Really bad. Save your money/credits!
    Don't waste your credit
Couldn't even get through the first segment. The narrator was horrible and the plot was more like a porn novel.
    Tough listen
The story was a little hard to follow, but was overwhelmed by the horrible audio quality. The reader (the author I think) should stick to writing only. In addition, the book has background noises in many scenes - very annoying. It also has the worst music repeated between chapters.

    Critic Reviews:
"A subtle thriller....The emotional involvement of the main characters...adds tension to this quietly absorbing mystery with its shattering and wholly unexpected ending." (Sunday Telegraph)
"A beautifully crafted and engrossing thriller. The plot is both sinuous and surprising, the characterisations true and secure." (Daily Mail)

The story is OK, but not brilliant
What did you like most about A Death Divided?
The narrator - I could listen to anything by Jeremy Northam, in fact I bought this on the strength of him being the narrator. (If you haven't heard him reading 'Our Man in Havana', do yourself a favour and download it.)
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I liked the story at the beginning, but I did get a bit bored by the end. I thought the plot got a bit lost at times. It's enjoyable but not great.
What about Jeremy Northams performance did you like?
    He is a brilliant narrator.

    Typical Ken FollettâEXCELLENT!
If you love Ken Follett, then this is another page turner for you. Loved the aging hippie anti-hero and identified with his passion for simplicity, even if he went about it the wrong way. A three-dimensional character, for sure. Along with good pacing and plot development, the author skillfully merges the story line of the commune along with that of the female FBI agent. A bit of humor sprinkled throughout also. That said, I don't think I have ever read a Ken Follett book I failed to love (and I've read them all), so I might not be the most objective reader.
    Gains moment
Fun book but far far from his best. It gets better the longer you read. Far fetched so a bit hard to buy in.

    Members Reviews:
Has some similarities to the current best seller, "The Silent Wife"
There's a lot of lying and covering up by everybody in this book by the British author, Clare Francis. I like her style of writing, and she had me glued to the story, and I quickly finished it. Want to try something new? Try Ms. Francis.
    Boring
Very disappointing. Probably the last book I will buy by this author who I used to read avidly. Predictable and boring.
    writer be a woman
Clare Francis is a very good writer. However already in the first chapter her main character Hugh Wellesley is struggling with both a business buyout and a sick wife as well as the hint of a murder investigation. He has to persuade his brother to put up a lot of money when he knows his brother is not making a fortune and is glad to have a buyer for his house. and his brother-in-law is against the buyout scheme.
Clare Francis likes the idea of the family firm surviving through hard times .but with the availability of cheap imports from the EU or China this buyout does not make much business sense. Francis tries to look at the love affair as something understandable from a masculine point of view . She tries to make the women unappealing . His wife is;wraith like' and Mary ihas 'eyebrows that seemed too dark and bold for her colouring' Is that Hugh talking? They seem the sort of expressions a woman might use about another woman. A man would regard a woman as slim even if she is undernourished . As regards eyebrows women like to make their eyebrows even darker and it is not dark eyebrows which are unappealing. Sorry even if the plot is a good idea it has not enough
reality to carry me . Please Francis continue writing but have your main character as A WOMAN.
Murder and deception tear a family apart.
Clare Francis's new novel, "Betrayal" is about Hugh Wellesley, a well-to-do English businessman who is very much on edge. One reason that Hugh's nerves are frayed is that he is in danger of losing the family business that he inherited from his father. Worse still, Hugh hears that Sylvie, his former lover, has been stabbed to death. Hugh knows that sooner or later the police will question him about the crime. He does not want the police to delve into his personal life, and he wants to avoid a public scandal at all costs.
Hugh's fragile wife, Ginny, is an asthmatic who does not handle stress well. Soon, she is caught up in Hugh's troubles and the police start to question both Hugh and Ginny about Sylvie's death. Did Hugh or Ginny kill Sylvie? Or is there another person who had reason to want Sylvie dead?
Francis effectively depicts Hugh's torment and guilt over the mess that he has made of his life. Not only has Hugh neglected Ginny in order to expand a business that may now fail, but he has embroiled his wife in a homicide investigation.

    A Good Read!
This is my first Mathew Reilly book, I was a bit sceptical at first because I have read reviews saying it was a bit slow..Nothing of the sort, I enjoyed it from start to finish, its a bit gung-ho and school boy heroish, but a good listen all the same.
The characters are well described and the book is well written & read by Steven Pacey.
The plot is good (if a bit far fetched!)but as with this type of fiction its pure escapism.
The lead character is James Bond & the terminator rolled into one! But don't be put off by that! As the plot unfolds the story gets better and the lead comes into his own.
My normal reads are Andy Mcnab, Chris Ryan & Frederick Forsyth.
For me this was equal to the aforementioned, although a little less believable.
    Recommended.
    Avoid
What disappointed you about Ice Station?
There was little story and the author created characters whom I had little interest knowing if they lived or died. The un-necessary violence was laced into an incredible (ie unbelievable) story.
What will your next listen be?
Anything but from the same author
Would you be willing to try another one of Steven Paceys performances?
    No
What character would you cut from Ice Station?
    All of them!
    Well read and enjoyable
Well read, with the narrator sounding a bit like John Hurt.
The plot is out there, but it's neatly done, and enjoyable.

The rules of the challenge are simple: seven contestants will enter, but only one will leave. With his daughter in his arms, Stephen Swain is plunged into a terrifying fight for survival. The stakes are high, the odds are brutal. He can choose to run, to hide, or to fight. But if he wants to live, he needs to win - for in this particular contest, unless you leave as victor, you do not leave at all.
    Critic Reviews:
"Offers constant, nail-biting action, but not a lot of reverence for one of New York City's greatest public institutions." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Lots of Nonstop Action!
Lots of nonstop action...exactly what I would expect from a Matthew Reilly story. It is an intergalactic competition to the death. Seven aliens, each from different galaxies, are put into an arena (in this case it is the New York Public Library)...nobody gets in or out until it's over. The rules are that they fight until only one is left alive. Representing earth is Dr. Stephen Swain, who has no idea what is happening, until he is suddenly transported to the arena as the competition begins. An unfortunate twist is that his seven year old daughter is accidentally transported with him, so not only does he have to keep himself alive, but his daughter as well. What I like most about this story is that Swain is the "unlikely hero"...he is not a fighter in real life, but saves lives instead. When thrust into this new world, he must rely on his intellect and quick thinking to stay alive. He also doesn't subscribe to the "kill or be killed" mantra...Even though he is battling for his own life, he still wants to be the "good guy" and save others if possible...If there is a way to change the rules of the game, he will find it! This doesn't mean at all that he is afraid to fight in any way...he can and does carry his own with the best of them...it just means that he isn't just about the killing. I wasn't too keen on the descriptions of all the aliens...they were just ok to me. This is a place where the author could have really used his imagination, and I felt that he just fell short here. What I enjoyed the most was all the action...Just as soon as Swain got out of one life threatening predicament, he was in another just as quickly. The fight scenes were definitely "over the top" and not realistic at all...but I didn't mind because the book was just a lot of fun...a little gory perhaps, but fun nonetheless! Matthew Reilly is one of my go to authors for action/adventure, and I will definitely read more of his in the near future. If you like Michael Crichton or James Rollins, you will like Matthew Reilly.
    Aliens with a unique twist!
This is a great book. It is based on a unique premise. Steven Swain and his daughter are transported by aliens into a combat maze. This particular maze is the New York Public Library. He and is daughter are being hunted and the only way to get out, is to win to-the-death combat with 7 aliens. The library is surrounded by an impenetrable electrical force field. Then, of course, you have the U.S. military and FBI trying to get inside, so even if he got out, someone else would be after them! It's fun, it's fast, it's wonderful!
    Good read
I liked the story. It has action, a likable hero who is also a man who loves his little girl.

    Members Reviews:
Fox Evil is another winner IMHO
I have now read 6 of Walters books. They have been from good to outstanding. I am buying this copy for a friend because I already loaned out my personal copy. The British call her the "Queen of Mystery's" and the title is well deserved. She has won multiple awards in England, France and the USA. Although this book starts with a dead body of an elderly woman and goes on to show a family that has broken into parts like a puzzle (even with missing parts... etc.) - this is not formula mystery by any means. Walters is a fine writer and one could use both "literature and mystery" to describe her contribution to the genre. Each book stands alone (sorry Jack Reacher) and her use of direct story telling and information presented from trial, letters, newspapers etc. flow better than any other mystery/thriller writers I know. She does not use smoke and mirrors to sneak into a finished book, but rather introduces you to a complex tale that makes you read carefully. Don't speed read her book... take time to feel the flow of words into thoughts and into well written chapters of intrigue and human flaws. I highly recommend this book to readers. If you like to follow the writer's books from the beginning of her career... try Ice House or The Sculptress (very dark).
lighter than her other works, but still a great read
Previous reviews have covered the plot outline quite thoroughly, so no need for me to do that. I just wanted to voice my opinion that I totally enjoyed this book, aside from the fact that I started it as bedtime reading and ended up staying up to 3AM to finish it. I haven't said that about a mystery in quite a while. Granted, fans of Walters' earlier books may be disappointed by the lighter tone she uses in "Fox Evil", but I was completely satisfied with the characters interactions, the plot, the ending, the quality of the writing. Those who love the "English village" style of mysteries and shun the gruesome will find this a delightfully fresh adaptation....no Miss Marples (not that I don't enjoy her in the right mood). Only warning is references to animal cruelty, but Walters did not beat you over the head with it and for those who avoid brutality in mysteries, those passages are easy to gloss over. I was left at the end wondering how the cast of protagonists got on (though there were plenty of hints). I can't remember how long it has been since I cared enough about one character, let alone an ensemble, to wonder about their futures. I even wondered about what happens to some of the "bad" chacters. "Fox Evil" is not "The Sculptress" or "The Scold's Bridle", but I bet there are many who would enjoy it.
    Good effort
OK. but somewhat difficult to keep characters straight. Also a little overdone.
    Five Stars
Walters is an imaginative writer and keeps the interest strong until the end.

    Not very good
I'm not sure which I disliked more, the acting or the writing. I thought the story was dull and it moved to slowly. The acting was distracting. I would pass on this one.

Listening to this book resembled listening to a TV or radio program which I found totally distracting. I did not enjoy it. I much prefer to be read to.
