"REVENGE IS A DISH BEST SAVORED COLD."

I don't remember at the moment who said that - some scholar can fill me in. I'm still reeling from the impact of this book. I would give it 10 stars if I could and I've never said that about another book I've reviewed. I think it is beside the point to expound on the book's plot - for one thing, other reviewers cover that topic; for another, to it would be useless, without giving away the plot, to try to put in a review how this book made me feel just about every human emotion there is with stunning clarity - emtions that slammed in so hard, I had to put the book down for a few moments quite a number of times. I am very surprised, as (somewhat embarrassedly admit) I ordered it on a whim for the simple reason that I had no other tempting thriller to read at the moment. In fact, heretofore I have felt lukewarm about Minette Walters' previous books, despite their critical acclaim. I did enjoy the made-for-television adaptions of "The Sculptress", "The Dark Room" and, to a lesser extent, "The Scold's Bridle", which made me think I liked the plots, but not the writing. Well, I retract all that now. The writing in this book was electrifying. Yes, it does deal with the darkest aspects human beings possess, as one reviewer mentioned, and if you don't have a strong stomach, be warned and stay away. In these days of work rage, road rage, racism, hate crimes, etc., it really does seem as if everyone thirsts mightily for revenge for wrongs done them. One would like to believe oneself could control this thirst for revenge - I did; but I don't anymore and there will be many more moments of reflection for me because of "The Shape of Snakes". "An eye for an eye" is an apt quotation, but here is a more intriguing one from the book: (an old Chinese proverb says) "If you wait long enough by the river, the bodies of your enemies will float by." If this book does not make you examine your own conscience, you don't have one.

Mystery as anthropology

I can't remember the last book that shook me so badly. Perhaps it was "Folly", but I rather think it was "Prince of Tides". The subject matter isn't really similar, but the visceral response certainly is. I'll be interested to see if you have the same reaction. I started it and was only benignly interested. I would put it down, not certain if I was really interested enough to resume, only to find that I was rearranging my schedule to return to that time and that place. It took me FOREVER to read this book, because I could only absorb it in small pieces and toward the last 1/4, I was anxiously seeking closure. Enough is enough.

Loved It! More Eve, please...more Felice!

This is the fourth book of Denise Hamilton's that I've read so far (number four in the Eve Diamond series which I've read in sequence). I have loved all of her books. The stories are great and unusual, the characters interesting and compelling, and I very much appreciate her journalistic experience. Her experience as an LA journalist gives these books incredible dimension in many ways including the fascinating stories and LA itself.

I love her writing overall. Not only are the stories interesting, but she tells them well. She gives voice to Eve so that we are really with her. And there are some incredibly gorgeous or nuanced passages at times that stop me in my tracks to savor--and yet are not writing-for-the-sake-of-writing, shoehorned into the text--but flow from the story, adding insight into Eve as a character and/or adding such elements as insight into the human condition, beauty or poignance, etc.

Plus Hamilton does an excellent job of describing complexities and nuances of different cultures (and I mean "cultures" in a very broad sense including people from different countries, professions, societal niches, etc). She does not hesitate to use terms and referents that may not be familiar to a reader, and then she provides you with the background you need or an explanation. And the best part is that she does this interestingly and unobtrusively. Brava! I rarely see writers do this, let alone do this so well. There seem to be three extremes. Making referents with no explanations that leave readers in the dark unless they go seek out information on their own; providing heavy-handed explanations that pull one out of the story; or, avoiding terms altogether that may otherwise provide color and also give us a chance to expand our knowledge. Other writers might benefit from studying how nicely she does this. The other benefit of the way that she does this is that it allows her to frame the context in a way that fits with her reasons for including the referent. If I were to have to look this up on my own, I may make interpretive choices that don't fit with the context of her creation. (Not to mention to have to leave the story or miss out because I don't have an opportunity to look something up readily at hand!)

I most especially loved Savage Garden.

This was an amazing novel. I purchased the book after seeing the made for tv film staring Tom Hardy and Charlottle Riley. Have to say the book and movie have very little in common. The ending is nothing like what they changed it to for the film and I actually much preffered the book ending. Freddie Jackson as a character is the guy you love to hate, he is so evil and depraved but so charasmatic at the same time. The depth of character in everyone in the novel is quite amazing, they are such broad multi dementional characters that I really enjoyed this book.

The Take

I like reading Martina Cole novels too start with and as an author she didn't let me down with this book. This novel is about family, jealousy and how it can tear couples apart but bring others closer together. I did enjoy this book and would recommened it to anyone.

A Multi-faceted Jewel of Fun and Excitement!

When I finished listening to this book, I immediately went back to the beginning and listened to it all over again! Although it is written in a rather fragmented style which some might find bitty, most of these fragments gradually come together in an intriguing way, with the others acting as mortar, cementing them together; as Michael Crichton suggests, this is rather like a DNA strand. Follow the tale (tail?) of Gerard the parrot through the highways and byways of this most entertaining book, and laugh all the way! Michael Crichton has used humour to make very readable a subject which should concern us all. (I should have preferred less foul language, but most of this was uttered by pretty foul characters! Art reflects life...)

Unfinished

I managed to listen to about half an hour of "Next" before giving up completely. I couldn't grasp the characters or what was going on.

Interesting concept

Not a gripping thriller, but it is interesting and mysterious. The publisher should have hired an editor. The many typos distracted from the reading enjoyment.

Great Novel, well worth reading

A great read. Hawthorne's Biblical references co-mingle with the real world to give you an emotional rollercoaster. This is an original idea in a world where so few seem to exist anymore in popular culture. I am so impressed by this book. Definitely worth reading. A page-turning delight. It makes you wonder about your own spiritual journey and the importance of life. Give it a go.

My Daddy liked it and he makes movies

My Daddy makes movies.

He said that when Graven Image is made into a movie that he will let me go see it, if I promise not to tell Mommy because he said that it will be rated PG-13.

Mommy won't mind because when she read it, it made her cry. I think that's why Daddy liked it too.

If they make it next year, it will be okay because then, I'll be 13!

Wonderful series, wonderful heroine!

Rune is a young woman who wants to be a film-maker. Although she doesn't have any formal education, she has managed to pick up bits and pieces from various jobs she has held, including her current one for an agency that does advertising and independent films. One day, on the way to work, she witnesses the bombing of an adult movie theatre - the professed work of a right-wing Fundamentalist group calling themselves the Sword of Jesus - and the idea of creating a film around the event captures her interest. She tracks down an actress who was in one of the films playing in the theatre that day - Shelly Lowe - and convinces her to give some interviews. However, shortly after beginning the project, a second bombing kills Shelly Lowe, so Rune must change her focus - she begins to interview Shelly's friends instead, deciding to focus the film on the life and death of this actress, while at the same time trying to solve the mystery of who exactly are responsible for the bombings. Rune develops a relationship with Sam Healy, a member of the bomb squad, who at first tries to keep her away from the scene and then later just tries to minimize the damage.

There are plenty of twists to this one - worthy of Jeffrey Deaver! He never lets us down, that's for sure! Don't miss this one!

Disappointing

Poorly written. Definitely not worth the purchase. Very disappointing for a Deaver book. I bought all 3 books. The 1st one was just as bad as this one

An average sequel

The main character Rune does not continue her unique development and insight to the world, as she did in Manhattan is My Beat. And while it does deal with an interesting story of those that are sometimes forgotten by a society who considers some less than worthwhile, it never really gets enough steam to say that they shouldn't be forgotten. On the other hand, it does get into the personality quirks of several people, including those that society would deem worthwhile, but have secrets the world doesn't know.

Reading this story will be ok, but don't expect the same level of enjoyment as from Manhattan is My Beat.
