Great book, difficult narration

What did you like best about this story?

This was written by bySt. Athanasius (296373) to counter the Arian heresy which claimed that Christ was just another creature not true God, and thus no incarnation. Athanasius eloquently but briefly goes through arguments for the proof and necessity and fittingness of the incarnation. He argues that there is no creature which Christ could have been, prophet, magician, ghost, demon,l angel, etc. He discussed Christ's power over nature & authority over moral law. He talks about the fittingness of the crucifixion compared to any other type of death. Though he discuss it he could go more in depth into the strongest argument: the necessity of the incarnation for overcoming sin, no creature could over come the broken relationship between God and man left by sin and death except God Himself.

What would have made On the Incarnation of the Word of God better?

The reader sounds like a robot. The text uses archaic words. It is monotonous. I struggled to try to understand. While it may be good theology, I found it very hard to follow.

The problem is not the content, but the narrator. I ordered the book for Kindle.

This is a dense book, and is probably one best read, not listened to.

The narrator reads in a monotone, with metronomic rhythm. It is hard to hear the punctuation, or to follow the thought.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

A classic piece of theology is rendered almost impossible to listen to, but an awful reader. Poor diction, no flow, and mispronounced words leaves this work extremely disappointing,

irritating narration! don't waste ur money!!

This would have to be the worst narration I have ever had the misfortune to have assaulted my ears! And to have paid for it...grrr! Buy the hard copy poeple!

I rarely write reviews but I truly enjoyed this book! I woke up this morning because I could not sleep and remembered I had yet to read this book. I am glad I woke up. I believe it was the Lord.

The author takes the time in the beginning of the book to offer a step by step guide for any new believer to follow in order to understand the nature, components, and personal requirements in order to successfully walk as a new creation in Christ.

Not heavy on church jargon and easy to understand for young and old.

She concludes with a poignant testimony of her life, trials, and how God brought her out. Especially helpful for teens and young adults who may have had family issues or bad church experiences.

As I said I really enjoyed it.

Great book!

This book is a great and simple explanation of salvation and basic Christian teaching for nonbelievers. This is a book I would give to nonbelievers that have a misconception of our faith and love for and in God! Also, I love the how the author tells her own testimony of how she was kept and saved. It shows there's nothing wrong with confessing your sins and that each one of us has a message and God has a unique plan for each of us. Most of all, it let's you know the most important thing, God loves everyone!

This Series of Lewis Essays is the Most Complete

At the time of this review, there are three Lewis essay collections available on audible, all read (very well) by Ralph Cosham.

1. God in the Dock

2. The Weight of Glory

3. This series of essays taken from the printed Essay Collection & Other Short Pieces, which Audible has broken up into the nine sections of that book. This recording, Aspects of Faith, is just one of those nine.

What I want to tell you is: all of them are good collections and worth having, but if you collect the nine titles described in #3 above, you will have every essay contained in the other two collections except for Rejoinder to Dr. Pittenger and Is Progress Possible. So, unless you are a completist, I would recommend simply collecting the nine in this series Also, this series of nine is better organized, skipping forward exactly one essay each time you click the forward button on your mp3 player or other interface. I believe God in the Dock jumps whole sections forward for each click.

But if you want a short (a half dozen hours or so) introduction to some of the very best Lewis essays, try The Weight of Glory collection. In my opinion, every single essay in that collection is essential Lewis, even Why I Am Not a Pacifist, which, even if not as timely in theme, still contains such great prose and turns of thought that it deserves placement with the broader essays found there.

In every case, don't miss the single essay, The Weight of Glory. That one's about the most exciting thing he ever wrote, in my opinion.

This man's insight never ceases to amaze me.

Truly a gifted man with the talent to see an issue from a variety of perspectives. Mr. Lewis shares his perspective in such a non threatening way that he would earn the respect and attention of even the most devout skeptic! I would be blessed to have even a fraction of his gift.

The copy that I received was in terrible shape. I thought that I had been cheated.

Robert Charles Sproul, (born 1939) is an American Calvinist theologian, author, radio host, and founder and chairman of Ligonier Ministries. He has written many books, such asIf there is a God, why are there atheists?,Reason to Believe: A Response to Common Objections to Christianity,Chosen by God,The Invisible Hand, etc.

He wrote in the Preface to this 1978 book, "The purpose of this book is not to provide a technical study in the science of apologetics, which science is designed to give a comprehensive defense of the intellectual credibility of Christianity. Rather this book is designed for laymen; to offer basic answers to the most common and frequent objections that are raised about Christianity. This book treats matters that range from such philosophical questions as the problem of evil to the very practical and personal frustrations that people encounter when confronted by hypocrisy." (Pg. 8-9)

He suggests, "If man has in fact committed cosmic treason against God, what reason could we possibly have that God should provide any way of redemption? In light of the universal rebellion against God, the issue is not why is there only one way, but why is there any way at all? I know of no way of answering that question." (Pg. 43)

He admits, "From a theoretical viewpoint the nihilist has a strong argument against anyone who rests his case for the existence of God on the grounds of human aspirations to significance. The nihilist must be answered by other arguments, such as those mentioned earlier. The value of the argument from meaning is its ability to expose the real issues and stakes of the God question." (Pg. 114)

He relates a conversation he had with a Christian Science devotee: "he contended that evil is just an illusion... I asked the man if he thought it was good that I was teaching people that evil was real. He said, 'No.' I asked him if it was evil that I was teaching falsehood about evil. He had no answer. If he objected to my assertion of the reality of evil, he had to affirm my thesis in order to deny it. His only recourse was to treat me as an illusion." (Pg. 121)

He points out, "sin entered the human experience by way of the fall of Adam and Eve. [The Bible] tells us that they were created good and then fell by choosing to sin. The question is, how could something created good choose something evil... If Adam had no inclination to sin or to good, how could he choose either one of them? Without desire or disposition, the will has no power to choose... the problem is a severe one and one for which I have no adequate solution. I do not know how evil could originate with a good God. I am baffled by it, and it remains a troublesome mystery to me. However, I am not prepared to jettison Christianity because of the mystery of evil...

Spot on a must read

Awesome!

After reading the book Justification and Regeneration I am reminded of classic Christian books. Not only is this book totally based off of Scripture, but also brings up and explains doctrines that are either unfamiliar or unclear in most American Christian preaching. The doctrine of justification is very well explained as well as the LOST doctrine of regeneration. It clearly shows that salvation is a super-natural work of God whereby the essence of a man is changed. It is a must read for a new Christian and for anyone who doesn't know what regeneration is. Highly recommend it! God Bless.

Passionate and True

Knowledge without passion is not knowledge. This book, on the other hand, captures both very biblically and does not mere educate, but spreads a passion for the Holy Work of Christ in us and to us.

Very Poor Reading of a Strong Academic Book

Would you try another book from Arthur Holder and/or Jason Huggins and Marcella Rose Sciotto ?

The Blackwell Companion series, while not even, is often a very helpful one--both for its breadth of coverage and because there is often an ebook or PDF available online or through libraries.

What did you like best about this story?

The academic essays themselves are generally fairly strong. The history section is particularly well laid out, covering a large swath of material. Like a spearhead, the book comes to finer points in the final section, allowing the skill and background of individual scholars to come to the front of the discussion. There is much that is available for a professor to use in selecting material for a class, or for an emerging academic to use to orient him or herself to the field. There are a couple of essays that capitalize on obscure language and are overly technical for the volume.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jason Huggins and Marcella Rose Sciotto ?

As far as narration goes, this was a terrible, terrible team. While it is admirable that a male and female were chosen for a long work of many voices, neither of them are trained to read academic work. Neither took the time to look up the technical words in the titles of the articles, let alone the entire chapter they were responsible for. While Huggins generally read well, missing only the technical words, it was a disaster for Sciotto. This narrator not only messed up the technical words, but cannot even pronounce basic university-level vocabulary. A nice voice does not make a good reader, and in the more complex pieces they were incomprehensible with Sciotto read them.

To be most blunt, Sciotto read half a book on Christian spirituality and did not know how even to pronounce some of the Bible books references, let along theological terms, and names. "Incarnational" rhymed with "national"!

I get that the technical language can be tough, but that basic words were misread by both authors means they were not up to the task.
