    Title: Prototype
Subtitle: What Happens When You Discover You're More Like Jesus Than You Think?
    Author: Jonathan Martin
    Narrator: Jonathan Martin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-01-13
    Publisher: Oasis Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 30 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Jesus is God and we are not. Most of us get that. But what we dont always understand is that God loves us just as much as He does His son. Many times in the Old Testament, God refers to human beings as His beloved. But when God called Jesus "my Beloved", Jesus did something truly remarkable: He believed Him.
In Prototype, Jonathan Martin creates a vivid understanding of what it means to be God's beloved. To completely trust, as Jesus did, that God loves us. To live without fear, confident in our identity and purpose. To handle life's wounds as Jesus did, and to wake every day with a deep awareness of God's presence. Martin reveals a startling truth at the heart of the gospel: Jesus is our prototype. And as we discover how the knowledge of being God's beloved changed everything for Jesus - how it set Him free to live out His purpose and love God, others, and the world - it will begin to do the same for us.

    A Game Changer
What other book might you compare Prototype to and why?
I read this book back to back with Jesus Is by Judah Smith, and it made this book even more amazing. Jonathan writes from a more academic standpoint than Judah, and a lot of what Judah talks about in his book, is discussed in depth in Jonathan's. Some people might disagree, but I think both go hand in hand really well, and I suggest reading them back to back.
Have you listened to any of Jonathan Martins other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have been a regular podcast listener of Jonathan Martin's for about a year. I really love His sermons because unlike many "Bible Belt" preachers, his focus is on the grace given to us by Jesus Christ. I grew up in the church, and have seen and heard a lot of people talk about sin and condemnation and personal definitions of what being like Jesus means. I have gotten really tired of people personally defining what like Jesus means and not actually reading scripture correctly and breaking down how Jesus tells us to be like Him. I am really tired of listening to certain famous pastor scream and yell at their congregations about how we should feel condemned for our sin and we need to repent and get rid of it cause we are ugly in God's eyes. I am really sick of hearing that we live in total depravity because of the fall and thats why the resurrection is so great is that he saved us from our wickedness. It's not that I don't agree, i just wish the focus of peoples lives was less on how terrible we are and how much sin separates us from God, and more on how to be more like Jesus. I don't think that when Jesus looked at people like the prostitute who washed his feet with perfume, that he thought she was ugly and depraved and disgusting because of her sin. I think he looked at her as beautiful, because he saw who HE created, and HE saw His creation was beautiful and good. He saw that she wanted to be like Him, to worship Him, to be around Him, and to be in relationship with Him. I believe thats how God looks at us, and I feel like people would live in a lot more freedom if they actually believed that is how God looks at them as well.

    Title: On Heaven and Earth
Subtitle: Pope Francis on Faith, Family, and the Church in the Twenty-First Century
Author: Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Abraham Skorka
    Narrator: Mark Bramhall, Arthur Morey
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 46 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-23-13
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 83 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
From the man who became Pope Francis: Jorge Mario Bergoglio shares his thoughts on religion, reason, and the challenges the world faces in the 21st century with Abraham Skorka, a rabbi and biophysicist.
For years Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, archbishop of Argentina, and Rabbi Abraham Skorka were tenacious promoters of interreligious dialogues on faith and reason. They both sought to build bridges among Catholicism, Judaism, and the world at large. On Heaven and Earth, originally published in Argentina in 2010, brings together a series of these conversations, in which both men talked about various theological and worldly issues, including God, fundamentalism, atheism, abortion, homosexuality, euthanasia, same-sex marriage, and globalization. From these personal and accessible talks comes a first-hand view of the man who would become pope to 1.2 billion Catholics around the world in March 2013.
    Critic Reviews:
"This remarkable book wonderfully demonstrates the warm and positive relationship Pope Francis has developed with Jews and Judaism. These honest and respectful exchanges between then-Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio and Argentinian Rabbi Abraham Skorka on a wide range of sensitive and complex topics - God, religion, fundamentalism, politics, and the Holocaust - is a model not only for Jews and Catholics but for all those seeking productive interfaith dialogue in helping to repair a broken world." (Rabbi Eric J. Greenberg, Director, Department of Interfaith Affairs, Anti-Defamation League)
"Whether or not they agree with everything that is said, readers of all religious backgrounds will be impressed by the substance and frankness of these conversations between Cardinal Bergolio and Rabbi Skorka. They clearly enact the call of the Second Vatican Council for 'fraternal dialogues' between Catholics and Jews. This is how religious leaders should speak to one another: on the basis of sincere friendship and respect. This book will also encourage anyone who wondered if a pope from a non-European country could be personally committed to the Catholic Church's new relationship with Jews. (Philip A. Cunningham, Ph.D., Professor of Theology and Director of the Institute for Jewish-Catholic Relations, Saint Joseph's University, Philadelphia)

    An overview of Jorge Bergolio
If you could sum up On Heaven and Earth in three words, what would they be?
To really get to know the Pope, it is hopeful to read the writings of the person prior to being Pope. This book provides a good starting point to get to know how Pope Francis viewed of things as bishop of Buenos Aires. The back and forth between Abraham Skorka and Jorge Bergolio covers a range of issues.
    Enlightening dialog
Excellent dialog between two human beings without expressions of defensiveness or self importance. I highly recommend this book to open your mind and heart.

    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Every follower of Jesus Christ should be able to answer two simple questions: Who is investing in me?Whom am I investing in?
God desires to pour an abundance of spiritual and emotional capital into your life - directly and through older and wiser believers. And he wants to use you to pour spiritual and emotional capital into the lives of others. Along the way, youll be changed. Others will change. God calls this process of spiritual investing "making disciples". Its the heart of the Great Commission. Its the vision of a great local church. Its the secret of a healthy, joyful, secure, and significant life. We call it "the invested life".
Unfortunately, many Christians have never had someone disciple them or show them how to make a disciple. The very idea often engenders frustration or even fear. Does that describe you? Then this book is for you.
From New York Times best-selling author Joel C. Rosenberg and his spiritual mentor, Dr. T. E. Koshy, comes a book that imparts a clear, compelling, scriptural vision of discipleship and is also an effective, tested, proven how-to guide. The Invested Life is full of practical suggestions and personal testimonies of Christians transformed by the investment of others.
    Members Reviews:
This book has refreshed my desire to grow
I bought this book because I have enjoyed and learned from Joel Rosenberg's other books, and I was interested to learn more about Dr. T. E. Koshy's life. I was not expecting God to use the book the way He did to open my eyes.
I've been growing more excited about and obedient to Jesus for 20 years since I really chose to begin living for Him in high school, but I still desire to be much closer to Him than I am. For some time, God has been nudging me to approach a more mature Christian to ask about meeting regularly and learning from them. Through this book by Joel Rosenberg and Dr. Koshy, the Spirit really opened my eyes to Christ's clear example and His commandment in Matthew 28 that I should be seeking a discipler. I have further been shown that I should be seeking a younger believer(s) that I can come alongside and help grow in their faith, to re-invest what has been given to me, so that the number of Kingdom harvesters is multiplied.
I can't wait to get started; I am already praying for God's guidance to identify the right discipler, and that God would also reveal to me any younger men that I should begin to disciple. I appreciate the emphasis throughout the book that we should proceed carefully, following the leading of the Spirit rather than jumping in as we think would be best. Rosenberg and Koshy also stress that by doing less "more efficiently", rather than trying to serve in too many ways at once, we will more successfully invest in the Kingdom. Their advice is that discipleship should be central to any other ministry involvement that we have such as teaching, pastoring, worship ministry, etc, and it is the most important way we can invest our time.
The testimonies provided by the Rosenbergs and the Koshys were also uplifting. In particular, the stories about the miracles God worked for evangelist Bakht Singh (the taxi story) and the Koshys (being given the house across from the international student office) were very encouraging.

    Language: English
    Release date: 02-07-13
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Jimmy Creech, a United Methodist pastor in North Carolina, was visited one morning in 1984 by Adam, a longtime parishioner whom he liked and respected. Adam said that he was gay, and that he was leaving The United Methodist Church, which had just pronounced that "self-avowed practicing homosexuals" could not be ordained. He would not be part of a community that excluded him. Creech found himself instinctively supporting Adam, telling him that he was sure that God loved and accepted him as he was. Adam's Gift is Creech's inspiring first-person account of how that conversation transformed his life and ministry.
Adam's visit prompted Creech to re-evaluate his belief that homosexuality was a sin, and to research the scriptural basis for the church's position. He determined that the church was mistaken, that scriptural translations and interpretations had been botched and dangerously distorted. As a Christian, Creech came to believe that discriminating against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people was morally wrong. This understanding compelled him to perform same-gender commitment ceremonies, which conflicted with church directives. Creech was tried twice by The United Methodist Church, and, after the second trial, his ordination credentials were revoked. Adam's Gift is a moving story and an important chapter in the unfinished struggle for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender civil and human rights.
The book is published by Duke University Press.
    Critic Reviews:
"Eleven years in the making, the author's valiant, first-person narrative examines the conundrum of religion vs. reason.... An inspirational example of unbiased humanitarianism." (Kirkus Reviews)
"With often rich, always empathetic prose, Creech proves to be a pastor - who honors the minds but challenges the ideas - to a large and varied flock of readers. (Denver Post)
"Creech's detailed dissection of deep-rooted anti-gay attitudes, intensely personal and spiritually impassioned, honors a remarkable straight ally." (Richard Labonte, Book Marks)
    Members Reviews:
A Must-Read for All Christians Who Seek Truth and Justice
The drama and heart break found in Jimmy Creech's story as revealed in his memoir "Adam's Gift" clearly describes to Christians too focused on church rules and dogma that by maintaining the status quo and not following the call to "love thy neighbor as thyself," the church itself is degraded, diminished, if not destroyed.
Although I have known Jimmy for over 10 years, I never really knew the appalling ordeal he endured to uphold his conviction that all of us are God's children and all of us are deserving of justice and equality within the church community.
When read with an open heart, Jimmy's story will undermine if not crush assumptions that respect, decency, and equality are not for the few but for all of God's children.
Some sections of Adam's Gift made me angry that such a kind-hearted man could be denied his calling as a minister. Other passages saddened me that the church could be so calcitrant and unmoved as to deny its LGBTQ members the right to interpret its teachings in a personally relevant and pertinent way.

    Publisher's Summary:
What is the relationship between charity and knowledge in the theology of Thomas Aquinas? Did Aquinas in his mature thought portray charity's act as antecedent to and independent of practical reasoning? Did he view charity's motion as rendering us morally good before God, apart from whether or not we do what is right in our actions? A dominant stream in contemporary Catholic ethics holds for precisely such a concept of charity, and many recent commentators on Aquinas maintain that this is his position as well. According to Michael S. Sherwin however, the contrary is in fact the case.
By Knowledge and By Love represents a major contribution to Thomistic moral theology and philosophy by providing a thoughtful examination of Aquinas' psychology of action and his theology of charity. Through a comprehensive analysis of the relation between intellect and will, knowledge and love, and charity and the infused intellectual virtues, Sherwin concludes that, far from divorcing the will from reason, Aquinas in his later works integrates reason and will more closely together.
Saint Augustine says, "No one can love what he does not know." According to Sherwin, Aquinas holds that God's grace respects and elevates this dynamic in the gift of charity, which depends on faith's knowledge, and on the knowledge provided by the other infused cognitive virtues and gifts. Charity is a virtue, and like any virtue its acts require some knowledge of their object. Sherwin argues that not only is this a faithful reading of Aquinas, it also has profound implications for any conception of moral development. The role of a mentoring community, the characteristics of friendship with God, and the specific actions required by love all play a part in Sherwin's analysis.
    Critic Reviews:
"This is an excellent book." (Alasdair MacIntyre, University of Notre Dame)
"Scholars of Aquinas, moral theologians, and theologians and philosophers interested in the will and the intellect will find this book necessary reading." (
    The Thomist)
"I highly recommend this work. Sherwin's understanding of Aquinas on charity and the relationship between intellect and will constitutes a clear contribution to philosophical and theological scholarship." (
    Speculum)
    Members Reviews:
Great synthesis of charity according to Thomas Aquinas
Sherwin gives a very detailed account of the relationship of the intellect and will. Addressing the development of Thomas' idea of this relationship from his earlier works to his later works, Sherwin is able to synthesize and conclude how Thomas uses the fundamental understanding of the will in his theory of love.
Highly recommended for anyone wishing to understand Thomas' view on the intellect and will and his treaties on Charity.
A brilliant addition to any theological library
Throughout Christian history certain theological dichotomies tend to dominate the backdrop. For example: the contrast between nature vs. grace, faith vs. works, or freedom vs. Divine sovereignty. Though their influence is often imperceptible, the force of these clashes move like theological seismic plates along the landscape of the Christian globe, where the collision between these meta-themes, even if unfelt to some, invariably form the landscapeâs very features.

    info for Christian Scientists
This book is great, whether on my Kindle or on my Android reading app. What sets it apart from other versions formatted for Kindle is that this one maintains the look of the paper book, with pages number unobtrusively inserted, and the little comments that occur to the side of the paragraph in paper versions are preserved as blue comments in the Kindle version. An interactive hyperlinked table of contents makes this book a dream for serious students of Christian Science.
When the text is all over the place, as in some versions, it is distracting. This version takes away all distractions so the student can focus on content.

How to Pray and Get Out of the Way
Dr. Jack Hayford's book on Intercessory Prayer is a book that explores a prayer life dedicated to others. The subtitle is Unleashing God's Power in the Lives of Those You Love.
When Adam and Eve sinned in the garden they were separated from God as we are all now, before salvation. Jesus came and died so that we could be restored to the family. There must be restoration of all mankind to God.
When satan decieved Adam and Eve into giving over their right to reign and rule over the earth the battle to get it back began. Dr. Jack Hayford describes this event as the planting of the sin seed into the earth. Like the weed it is it grew and expanded until it covered the whole earth.
When we pray we are doing Spiritual Battle against the devil. The battle is never relational or between you and another person, it is always a Spiritual battle. Knowing this Dr. Hayford spends the rest of this book discussing how praying for another to be saved is never a battle with them.
God calls us to be examples, but one of my favorite quotes from the book is, "Guilt Motivation is Always Loveless". Dr. Hayford spends a lot of time discussing how we should and should not behave toward the unbelievers we are praying for.
Colossians 4:6 Let your conversation be gracious and attractiveso that you will have the right response for everyone.
The biblical stories of the farmer who tends to his seed planted in the ground and the women who adds yeast to her bread dough are used to illustrate how God takes our small input and expands it beyond our own ability. A little yeast rises the whole dough.
In every area of Intercessory Prayer God asks us to "Pray and get out of the Way". Don't stop a move of God by digging up the seed you planted.
The Secrets of Intercessory Prayer really is a book about the battle with the devil and the relationship with the unbeliever. Knowing your place in each area will allow God toUnleash His Power in the Lives of Those You Love.
This Audiobook, narrated by Maurice England gives many everyday examples of how to and not to act. A key example is Dr. Hayford's suggestion to "Forgive the Unsaved Person you are Praying for, for not Being Saved". This and other key revelations are why I highly recommend this book for all Christians.
    Sound teaching
Great wisdom for the person seeking a better understanding of prayer. I am thankful to have found this book. Enjoy!
    Excellent!
I love Pastor Jack's heart for Jesus, and for song as prayer. He has confirmed much of what I have myself heard from Holy Spirit about prayer, and devotion.

Amazing, stunning and transformative for me. Love Story reminds me of Max Lucado's early books, which I think were his best. Nordeman examines major Biblical characters, asks questions, and modernizes their experiences to help us better understand them. I listened to the book, and her narration is outstanding and absolutely enhanced the experience. I will definitely need to revisit this book.
