    Title: The Radical Disciple
Subtitle: Some Neglected Aspects of Our Calling
    Author: John R. W. Stott
    Narrator: Grover Gardner
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 43 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: christianaudio.com
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 28 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
What is a life of radical discipleship? At root, it means we let Jesus set the agenda of our lives. We aren't selective. We don't pick and choose what is congenial and stay away from what is costly. No. He is Lord of all of life.
In the last book by the leading evangelical churchman of the 20th century, John Stott opens up what it means at root to be a follower of Jesus. He explores eight aspects of Christian discipleship that are too often neglected and yet deserve to be taken seriously. Here, including the last public sermon he ever preached, Stott offers wisdom gained from a lifetime of consistent Christian commitment. In addition, he poignantly reflects on his last years of life and ministry. The message is simple, classic and personal: Jesus is Lord. He calls. We follow.

    Concise...pulls no punches.
This culminating work by the timeless master of evangelical expression moves quickly into the heart of the matter. This is a short volume so I won't spoil the fun, but as always Stott's theology and application interwine to produce memorable and poignant understandings that gestate in the soul and resonnate with believers from all denominational backgrounds.
There is some recycled material from conferences, but to my knowledge it was previously unpublished in any readily accessible format. If you are like me, and can't get enough of Stott's wisdom and kindness this final installment is a must have. I can't wait until more of his works are available on Audible. His commentaries, especially those on Paul's epistles are deeply insightful, and he is no less so in "The Radical Disciple" as he explores the same question Bill Mahrer ponders on his HBO show...what does following Jesus really look like, and why aren't we seeing more of it?
Enjoy! "The Cross of Christ" or "Ephesians" are wonderful next steps if you are just getting into Stott.
Sitting at the feet of the rabbi
Reading this book is like sitting at the feet of a venerable rabbi. Every sentence, every paragraph, every page is full of wisdom that younger Disciples of Christ should cherish and hold onto. John Stort has made a notable contribution to Christianity and we, his readers, are all the better for it.

    Title: Forgiveness
    Subtitle: The Hero's Journey
    Author: Cindy Currier
    Narrator: Shawna Windom
    Format: Abridged
Length: 5 hrs and 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-22-10
    Publisher: Tate Publishing
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
"A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself."
    Joseph Campbell
What Cindy Currier teaches us is that everyone has the potential to be a hero. Despite years spent struggling with her troubled past, Cindy finally found the strength to let go of her trauma and move forward into a life of happiness and peace.
Though this kind of healing can require a monumental amount of strength and temerity, Forgiveness: A Hero's Journey shows that any feat can be accomplished through determination and faith in God's love. Once lost in the woods of despair and hatred, Cindy faced down witches, ogres and all manner of beasts before emerging once more into the sunlight.
Now, in simple sections and with heartfelt words, she explores the nature of Anger, Fear, Shame, Guilt, and ultimately Forgiveness and how it can be achieved.
The journey to forgiveness is cyclical: It begins with a call to adventure (dissatisfaction with life as it is), and is followed closely by chaos (a life event that calls into question old beliefs and thought patterns), battling enemies (marshaling new coping skills and strategies), spiritual awakening (development of new insights, new self-awareness), and carrying the message home (sharing new insights with others). Following these steps will enable anyone to overcome the monsters of anger and shame and emerge from the forest into forgiveness and love, and to share that love with the world.

Excellent, thought provoking read and would definitely recommend!
    Thought provoking read
I, by nature, like rules and order. As a result, it is difficult for me to step out into the unknown yet this is what I have done as I've read Cindy Currier's book "Forgiveness, The Hero's Journey". I was drawn to this read not only by the title, but by the conversational style of the author. I had never really thought much about forgiveness or the impact it might have on my behavior choices. Currier likens the journey to Red Riding Hood's walk into the unknown woods. In order to fully heal, we must sometimes step out of our comfort zones on faith. "Once we learn to see difficult people and circumstances for what they really are---opportunities to test, sharpen and expand our strengths---we can more easily put aside grievance activities that sap our spirit and focus on what is important: dealing with forks in our road, the opportunities for stopping, taking inventory, and exercising choice." I found myself drawn into my own personal "unknown woods" as I read Ms. Currier's personal testimony and journey and ultimately realize that I can move past my own insecurities and woundedness into a place of forgiveness and healing that will ultimately make me whole. This is a must read for anyone who has struggled with forgiving or who knows someone who is confonting past demons. Now that I have a tool that helped me identify my "emotional landmines" I am much more intentional in moving forward rather than wallowing in self pity. This is a book that I will re-read and reference often as I continue on my own personal journey of forgiveness.
    doesn't ring true
As an acquaintance of Cindy and a friend of Cindy's ex-husband I read this book with hope of truth being told but instead found a whitewashed version to put the author in the best light.

    Publisher's Summary:
We know we can talk to God, but it just sounds so important, so intimidating, so religious. We assume that only the very spiritual hear from Him directly. But author Sheila Walsh says "Every sound we utter, every thank you we say, every tear we cry in God's presence is prayer."
Get Off Your Knees and Pray is a real womans guide to real prayerfrom understanding the biblical basis for prayer to cultivating a vital personal relationship with God. It is the perfect blend of practical advice, personal stories, and biblical truth to encourage and help you achieve greater intimacy with God through prayer. Prayer is not just a few sentences we say to God while on our knees. It is living out our ongoing, every-moment commitment to God.
    Critic Reviews:
"Sheila steers us away from prayer as formula (say the right things the right way and God responds) and toward prayer as picturea picture of Gods desired relationship. Talking. Listening. Trusting. Living. This volume, warm and witty like its author, deserves a spot on every reading calendar. (Max Lucado, best-selling author and minister)
No matter what kind of difficulty you have about prayer, this book will help. Sheila has experienced all of them, and she will take you through them to where God has taken her: straight into His very real and accepting Presence. (Dr. Henry Cloud, speaker and co-author of Boundaries)

    Excellent boob but horrible production
The audio publisher really did an injustice to the book. The book is an excellent inspiration to encourage a more robust prayer life but the audio is a distraction. Off mic comments are audible. And the editing splices wrong segments together.
    Great book/message but...
I loved the book and the message was exceptional but I was very disappointed to hear that unlike what the description said, the audio book was not read by sister Sheila Walsh. Although the reader was fine, I was looking forward to the warmth and humor and rich wisdom behind every twist and turn that is so Ms. Walsh 's beautiful voice. I am sorry to see that she is not reading most of her own books lately. She must have a very good reason. I will buy her hard cover books and just hear her voice in my head as I read along. Thank God for the little grey cells. She is a wonderful author and speaker! May God continue to bless her every step.
    Just Pray
An excellent reminder of how powerful prayer can be in our daily life. This book will encourage you to make prayer an important part of your life.
Good honest book with great insights and verses
What did you love best about Get Off Your Knees and Pray?
That she doesn't pretend to have all the answers but addresses all the issues. Gives many good verses and suggestions that are useful.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The author as she told stories of times when she had been vulnerable and she is so honest.
What does Sheila Walsh bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I love her Scottish accent and laughter.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Publisher's Summary:
This audio recording rescues ambition from suspicion by putting it to work for the glory of God. Many think of ambition as nothing more than the drive for personal honor or fame. As a result, ambition, the God-implanted drive to improve, produce, develop, and create, is neglected and well on its way to paralysis. For some, dreams are numbed. For others, there are no dreams; life just happens. And for those who are dreaming, motives are often confused. One thing is certain: ambition needs help.
Dave Harvey is calling for a rescue. He wants to snatch ambition from the heap of failed motivations and put it to work for the glory of God. To understand our ambition, we must understand that we are on a quest for glory. And where we find glory determines the success of our quest. Has your God-given ambition been starved and sedated for too long? Are you ambitious? It's time to reach further and dream bigger for the glory of God.

    Title: Practice Resurrection
Subtitle: A Conversation on Growing Up in Christ
    Author: Eugene Peterson
    Narrator: Grover Gardner
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 37 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-06-10
    Publisher: christianaudio.com
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 33 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
There is no question that bringing men and women to new birth in Christ is essential. But, argues Eugene Peterson, isnt it obvious that growth in Christ is equally essential? Yet the American church does not treat Christian growth and character formation with equivalent urgency. We are generally uneasy with the quiet, obscure conditions in which growth takes place. Building maturity in Christ is too often relegated to footnote status in the text of our lives.
In Practice Resurrection Peterson brings the voice of Scripture especially Pauls letter to the Ephesians and the voice of the contemporary Christian congregation together in understanding what is involved in the practice of becoming mature growing up to the stature of Christ.
    Members Reviews:
    A Book To Be Savored
What did you love best about Practice Resurrection?
The quiet, orderly enthusiasm with which Rev. Peterson writes is a special gift.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Practice Resurrection?
Realizing at the beginning that the book is not just an ordinary look at scriptural concepts, one should settle in to savor its ideas and concepts.
Which character as performed by Grover Gardner was your favorite?
Mr. Gardner's style seems to catch the essence of the author's thoughts.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I quickly listened to the first three chapters to get a feel for the book, then went back and began to re-listen with pencil in hand. It is a book (not unlike the book it discusses) to be carefully absorbed.
    Any additional comments?
Ephesians is a wonderful Bible epistle to read and study at the beginning of a new year (or anytime for that matter). It is a solid guide for the resurrection life the church and the people of the church are to live as part of God's body. Based on scripture, Rev. Peterson's interpretations catch the richness of the ancient Greek language as stroke by stroke he paints a picture of the abundant blessings received from heavenly realms in Christ.

Subtitle: Rediscovering the Gospel in a 16th Century Catechism
    Author: Kevin DeYoung
    Narrator: Adam Verner
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 1 min
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-02-10
    Publisher: christianaudio.com
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 19 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
In The Good News We Almost Forgot, Kevin DeYoung explores the Heidelberg Catechism and writes 52 brief chapters on what it has shown him. The Heidelberg is largely a commentary on the Apostle's Creed, the Ten Commandments, and the Lord's Prayer, and the book deals with man's guilt, God's grace, and believers' gratitude. The result is a clear-headed, warm-hearted exploration of the faith, simple enough for young believers and deep enough for mature believers.
As DeYoung writes, "The gospel summarized in the Heidelberg Catechism is glorious, it's Christ gracious, it's comfort rich, it's Spirit strong, it's God Sovereign, and it's truth timeless." Come and see how your soul can be warmed by the elegantly and logically laid out doctrine that matters most: we are great sinners and Christ is a greater Savior!

    A New Favorite of Mine
(This review covers the Kindle version and the companion audiobook from Audible.)
I debated whether or not to buy this book, and I'm SO GLAD I did! It has been a breath of fresh air in every way.
I did not grow up in a tradition that uses catechisms, and I had no familiarity at all with the Heidelberg. I did, however, grow up in a church that taught me to love good theology, and I have pursued good theology for years...sometimes losing the pursuit of God Himself in the process.
Not that God can be known apart from good theology. But it's possible to pursue theological knowledge as an end in itself, and to do so with a desire to master Christianity and master others with your Christianity. In other words, it's possible to be a Pharisee.
Good theology, rightly pursued, is not a desire to master God, but to be mastered by Him. The true knowledge of God must always lead to submission, as can be clearly seen by the Biblical accounts of everyone who encountered God's majesty firsthand. One pursues good theology in order to rightly know this God to whom we all must give account, and, knowing Him, to live every day in a right relationship to Him.
Enter the Heidelberg Catechism, and DeYoung's warm exposition of it.
I have rarely been privileged to hear such a wonderful depth of worshipful theology condensed into such a small package. I often felt joy and even wonder at the beautiful simplicity and depth of the truths expounded there, and expanded by DeYoung. In addition the narrator managed to capture DeYoung's pastoral tone very well, and was obviously a good choice for the audiobook.
Even in the one area where we truly disagree (DeYoung is a paedobaptist, and I'm a credobaptist), I found the book helpful. I was reassured by what the Catechism's paedobaptist view does and does NOT embrace (for example, it avoids the heresy of baptismal regeneration). I also appreciated DeYoung's warm, humble, joyful, loving defense of his views on the subject. He is a brother in Christ that I would enjoy meeting on this earth if I ever had the chance, and I look forward to getting to know him in Glory!
I can't wait to share this book with my entire family as a part of our family devotions for the next year.
    "We're all theologians"
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and learned a lot. Kevin Deyoung does an excellent job of walking through the catechism.

    Excellent understanding of priesthood
Those of us who know the prodigious output of Richard Rohr will thoroughly appreciate this very early offering, and realise that right from the beginning this was an exceptional spiritual leader. A young, 35-year-old Rohr is giving a retreat to priests, many of whom are a great deal more senior to him. It is given in the euphoric post-Vatican II period, and gives a thoroughly grounded exploration of what it means to be a priest in every aspect of the vocation. That doesn't mean it is only of value to priests. Everyone can benefit from his insights, and the listener is grateful for five-minute tracks, because often one goes back to the beginning of a track to make sure one really has grasped the point he was making.
Perhaps the mature Rohr with his breadth of vision and inclusive outlook would be a little embarrassed at the section near the end on "Why I am glad I am Catholic," in which protestants come off rather second best, but then, we are all allowed to be young, and this set of talks was given to a group of catholic prists in the 70's.
Even given the occasional datedness of it, and the speaker's youth, this is still a very, very worthwhile book, and one which I am going to go back to over and over.

Men and women acquire the wisdom needed to transform the pain of their lives in different ways. As gender roles change, this process also changes, and with it comes the promise of improved relationships. Rohr believes we are in the midst of dynamic spiritual growth opportunities for both genders.
In "Men: Journey of Transformation", Rohr suggests that, in our culture, men between 35 and 50 face a crisis of limitation, confronting them with the fact that they cannot have it all. This letting go is a process of descending. They grow to trust through patience and develop compassion as they pass through the dark night of faith and acquire fulfillment in the second half of life.
In "Women: Journey of Transformation", Rohr proposes that for most women, the spiritual journey comes from being placed in an inferior status. Women learn the language of descent early. They meet the mystery of transformation through a dark night. They begin to ascend in their 50s, acknowledging their power and inner strength.

    Publisher: Zondervan
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 34 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Pastor Bill Hybels believes that there is a new reality in America. The church has entered an era of growth and unprecedented spiritual opportunity to share the Gospel, yet at the same time we face a shrinking economy and a world in crisis. This poses a great resource challenge for the church. In order to reach out to people who are spiritually hungry, the church needs more people to be equipped to serve others.
Hybels passionately believes the key to the future of the church is the equation "X (paid staff) + Y (volunteers) = Z (bearing much fruit for Gods glory)". Churches cannot afford to continue hiring more and more staff with limited budgets. The key to resourcing the church is what Hybels calls "the Y factor".
The Y factor is the pool of volunteers in every church. The great need of the church is to grow the churchs volunteer base through the equipping ministry of church staffs. As churches recover the message of Ephesians 4:11-12 to "equip Gods people for works of service" they will launch a Volunteer Revolution.
People are just waiting to discover the gifts and passions that God has given them to serve others and then be invited to use those gifts and passions through the local church in order to advance the kingdom of God on Earth. Hybels believes that every church staff should be helping people discover their spiritual gifts, passions and place of service in order to meet the growing needs in our churches and world.
Hybels makes a clarion call to move beyond volunteer retention to volunteer acquisition. By attracting, connecting, training, and sustaining volunteers, churches will mobilize people into places of service that will bring new meaning to their lives and understand why God put them on planet Earth. Hybels also outlines how we can build lifelong volunteers in the church through community, celebration, and commendation.

    incredible
Book is very motivating. It is the power of the volunteer that can change the world.
    I enjoyed this book.
It used real life examples to back the principles taught on the book. The author took great care in explaining a topic without watering down the impact of subject.
    Volunteer Career
While I am not the most adamant bible thumper and often find any religious pretext to be rather pretentious, this book was truly an amazing read. It truly spoke to my soul hearing about an ancient justification for doing good works over our life as we commit to a cause greater than ourselves and like Jesus strive to create the kingdom of heaven here on earth. Great book and highly suggested read if you are religious and looking for personal stories on why we should volunteer. Might have some insights for salesman as well.
    Great content! Ditch the music.
This book has a lot of good reminders of the value of volunteering at a church. As a pastor, it brings me back to people in the ministry instead of asking them to complete tasks.
However, when listening at 1.5x, the music gets all jumbled and is an annoyance. Also, The reader doesn't say the chapter numbers, which would've been helpful in having a context of where I was in the book.

I'll READ the book thank you.
After reading "What in the world is going on" in our ladies Bible Study, I was looking forward to listening to this book. The contents would deserve a 4-5 star rating; however, the narrator speaks way too fast! I like to leisurely listen while I'm driving or working around the house. The narrator speaks like one of those fast talking commercials. I have to really listen to catch each word. I think he's rushed a 12 hour book into a 7 hour book. I would easily recommend this book as reading material, but not the audible format.
    Peace returned to me
Even though this book was written during the 2008-2009 financial crisis, it spoke to me and was relevant to the valleys I'm facing today. I am renewed and confident. I know where. My strength and hope resides. Regardless of what happens, Gods plan will see me through. Read it if you have fears and doubts.
