Perhaps My Favorite Devotional

Would you listen to Grace Notes again? Why?

Yes, I would - and I plan to. :-)

What did you like best about this story?

I have used and reviewed many Christian daily devotionals (of which, there are painfully few available in audio format). This has become one of my two or three favorites. The narrator's voice, while at first not sounding ideal for the subject matter, quickly grew on me (and I now wouldn't exchange it even if I could).Yancy's variety of insights - from world travel to historical accounts to encounters with unique ministries to childhood impressions to literary reviews - are all deftly related to growth in your walk with Christ. While not quoting Scripture much (the only thing keeping it from being my unqualified favorite devotional) it is consistent with Biblical truth. If you listen to each day's devotional on your way to work or into your day, you will be very, very satisfied with this audio book.

What does Maurice England bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

He grows on you quickly. I was not initially elated with his voice as narrator - yet still got the book because: 1) I'm a fan of Yancy's writing; and 2) There are surprisingly few Christian devotionals in audio book format. Within just a few days I grew familiar with Mr. England's distinct voice, and now feel that it is perfect for this devotional book. Well done, sir!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would enjoy that - if time ever presented itself in such generous portions - yet this is a daily devotional. In just three or four minutes a day, Yancy contributes an impressive amount of insight and unique perspective.

Insightful, Inspiring, Informative and Passionate!

Absolutely enjoyed this book.This my 2nd time through. I enthusiastically recommend this read. You will become an avid reader of Philip Yancey's work. To God be the glory!!

Kind of a disappointment with Yancey

I loved What's so amazing about Grace, and Disappointment with God, so I imagined I would love this too. Alas, this was not the case! This particular book does not translate well on audible, Folks get tired of constant admonitions, and Yancey really needs to get over his"traumatic roots."

Apparently, in print, this book is more like a devotional. Audible listeners tend to listen to the entire book. It's unnerving to read weeks of different entry's on a single sitting. This particular book does not translate well to audible.

Yancey constantly complains how he was preached at angrily as a child.

Frank comes at you with some very stirring and challenging thoughts . I love this book .

You will probable want to buy a hard copy after taking a listen . You may want to keep a voice recorder handy or a pen and pad of paper . He teaches some very moving high spiritual concepts about Christ and his church .

A new way of building faith in God

It is a paradigm shifting book. Thank God for the revelation through the book. I hope all christians can get the point of their life with the help of the book.

Straight simple truth

Randy uses real life and practical analogies to bring God's word into a present reality for those willing to embrace it. Spoiler alert: purity is smart, impurity is stupid!

Wow, Nailed It!

The author of this book was sweetly blunt. Nothing about this book came across as mean or judgmental, but it was definitely the truth with no sugarcoating. If you want to hear the truth and experience deliverance, you'll love this book. The performance was great also. The reader was clear, strong and expressive, but not overly so. Two thumbs up.

Awsome Resource

As a beginner in exploring the act of prayer, I found this book very instructional. It provided me with a foundation in prayer based on biblical praying men. I was able to implement these principles immediately as well as share them in my leadership of my church's Men's Ministry. In the beginning I had trouble understanding the style of the writing. Once my mind was quiet, it flowed very well.

Great Book!

E.M. Bounds give great insight into prayer and it's powerful effects. The only thing about this listen is that Simon Vance did so great reading God's Smuggler and Dorien Ellis did such a tremendous job reading the last E.M. Bounds book it was hard to get the same effect from the calmer Simon Vance as I did in Power through Prayer.

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about the essential-ness of prayer and what it can do in your life.

GREAT book

I loved this book. it's the first book I've read by John Aldridge and I'm definitely going to be reading more. He's got a great voice for reading that shows his heart and such awesome insight into the heart. highly recommend!

Loved it!!!

This book challenged me on so many levels. In a lot of ways it reminded me of what I already knew but had forgotten. I would recommend it to anyone.

Great examples

This book was read by the author and he was sincere with great illustrations of how to walk with God, what the key issues are when living the Christian life. If you are a Christian looking for a more intimate relationship with God- full of abundance then this will help. Not for new Christians.

Thoughts

Great book overall and I enjoyed how John connected situations in the Bible to so many situations in famous books and movies. Great connections. I just didnt like that many parts were skipped over from the book so at times it was hard to pick back up when I was also using the book.

Very Comforting

Encouraging book. Understanding that the real focus is God and not ourselves is certainly half the battle. The rest is receiving the truth about God.

Every Christian should listen to this book. A lot of unnecessary doubt and troubling emotions will end.

Excellent Book

Excellent book. I was pleased with the ease of reading and understanding. I especially liked the way it is backed up by the bible.

Not an easy listen

Although this book had some great ideas, both the narrator and the language used was difficult to listen to. Wording was "extremely" formal, even using words like "goeth" and "thy" as if quoting from King James (but these did not seem to be quotes). I missed a lot of the content because I was hung up on trying to understand the words and sentences.

Heresy

If you consider yourself a Christian, born again by the power of God's Holy Spirit, do not read this book. If you are looking for the Lord's true comfort, read your Bible. It is guaranteed to bring you lasting and true comfort, and best of all, God's holy Word never fails. This book was written by a mystic. Do not read this book. Read your Bible and pray to God for his peace, his true comfort.
