700 minutes too long

Tom Rinaldi is of ESPN fame and regularly creates gripping, outstanding 30 and 60 minute segments on topics that go beyond the sports field. Tom tells an interesting story here of Wells Krauther (sp?) that would have been awesome if told in 30-60 minutes. Instead, Tom takes a 30-60 minute idea and realizes a book of that length won't sell, and thus stretches it to 6.5 hours - still pretty short for a book.

If you can find a summary of this book, it's likely worth reading. The 60 minute vision would have me highly interested the whole time. The 750 minute version was tedious.

A must read book. I found the book to be very inspirational and touching. I will definitely recommend to all my friends to read.

Ssh, I've Got You, Buddy...

...is what makes this such a good book. A story of friends saving friends.

But I'll say it: This is like three books in one. The "first book" is one of the clearest, finest, most honest accounts of depression I've ever heard. It's so unflinching that, if you haven't been around depression, it can be enervating. But, and I have clinical depression, it cuts to the bone and explains it in a way I never could. Bless her. The "second book" is about Barton's slow struggle into a form of normalcy--one that is so filled with self-absorbed, inconsiderate choices that I stopped listening for a while. Especially since she shrugs off signs of an illness with Bunker, wallows in the self-pity of, "oh gosh, why is this happening?" -BUT- the "third book" is of her total wake up call, her total devotion, her total determination to give back the love that she's received. Because after the meds have kicked in, therapy's a possibility. And after the therapy's kicked in, action's a possibility. And boy does Julie act! In all areas of her life, Bunker's life shines like a beacon, and she lives every ounce of her love.

I could not stop listening as the story has grown into something with the most tremendous amount of insight imaginable. She shows courage for Bunker, forgiveness for atrocious abuse from her brother in their childhood; she shows accountability for her poor choices. And she shows hope--golden, glimmering hope.

I'm glad she narrated it herself as she has warm, emotional tones. She does read rather slooowly, though, so I had to switch to x1.25, even x1.5 at times, as it dragged. But don't let it get to that point! Get past the "drag" and listen to this heartfelt book.

After meds, after therapy, after action? There's honest, blessed love.

Disappointed.

I never review books but had to this time. I waited and waited for this book. As a person who has faced depression, hospitalization for suicide ideation, and ultimately found myself saved in the service of helping rescued dogs- I found this book to be pretty self centered and found many instances of the author and her family being irresponsible dog owners and then thinking about how this hurt them- not the dog. I don't want to give away the plot- but even her choices in the end seemed to serve her best-and that was her first priority.

good story not great worth the money though

I bought this audiobook after listening to his interview on Reasonable Doubt. it was an interesting story but I feel like all I listened to was an overview. there was a lot more that I wish had gone into detail about. the overall quality was not excellent either on the audio side

Could not finish thanks to narrator.

The book is full of information that you can find online with a view searches and clicks. The narrator spoke too fast and continually mis-pronounced names of players. You would think a book about a hockey player the narrator would know how to say EVGENI.

Love learning about crosby, but...

This book was dry, had a few spelling and grammar errors. Sid deserves better! I did learn a little more about him, which added to my love for him as a player and an individual.

Awesome. Any hockey fan has to love and appreciate Sidney' s talents, I am a huge fan, of both. GREAT BOOK. Highly recommend

Inspiring

Writing an unauthorized autobiography of someone famous, especially a famous athlete, could be tricky. There is so much information and so many stories and anecdotes behind that person's life that it could be challenging about which information to include. But for author Bill Redbad, who shows exceptional skills in combing through the details, his book Hyun-Jin Ryu: The Inspirational Story of Baseball Superstar Hyun-Jin Ryu has turned out to be a great read.

Succinct and well-packed with information that all Hyun-Jin Ryu fans will definitely appreciate, the book tells so many of what made Hyun-Jin Ryu a respected baseball player, including his family background and what we went through growing up.

With this book and with how Redban weaved his words, this is inspiring not only to sports fans but to anyone who is pursuing something they love to do and would like to read a truly remarkable life. The book offers so much in just a few pages, and that is telling of the author's brevity and control. While Hyun-Jin Ryu: The Inspirational Story of Baseball Superstar Hyun-Jin Ryu is a quick read, the inspiration and the lessons that readers will draw from it will stay with them for a long time.

I don't know if this 50-page booklet is worth paying for. What you get for your money is a very brief and superficial overview of Hyun-Jin Ryu's career. There's nothing here you won't find for free (and at a higher level of writing) simply by Googling "Ryu" and reading the plethora of articles by professional sports writers. The high school-level composition, complete with typographical errors, drips with adulation and flattery; while offering little in the way of analysis or insight into what makes Ryu tick as an MLB player. Since fan-pieces like this don't have to adhere to any journalistic standards, I also have doubts as to the accuracy of some of the information in the booklet.

The counter-narrative to Geithner, Paulson, et al.

Plenty of other authors have dished up roughly this viewpoint (or at least parts of it) of the corrupt banksters, and the tradition goes way back. But here, as it focuses into the 2008 crash and beyond, it is neat, concise, and cutting sharp as ice. I was rolling my eyes with the author's choosing to open with disgust at the strippers on the trading floor (thinking oh no, how trivial as an opener to such a book as this, even if I share the disgust), but I do share with the author the (at least perceived) suggestion that a generation of traders and their brethren have shallow, cheesy cheapened values (for all the mind-boggling price tags on their cheap toys and trinkets, human ones included) that permeate more than their sexually harassing and idiotic bachelor parties during business hours. We are better than that, and we deserve better than that, as the folks pulling levers in the corridors of power that in turn impose multi-decade financial burdens on we, the peasants. Now, as to Tim Geithner and John Paulson, I am grateful for the author's trail of bread crumbs suggesting all is not kosher at those lofty heights. I'm not quite so adversarial toward those fellows, inasmuch as I seem to have survived these strained years in one piece, some of which I see as linked to their decisions. They could REALLY have fumbled the ball, and they didn't, but that doesn't excuse everything laid out here. Bravo to the author whose work I have enjoyed a lot. And we DO need to scrutinize the little cabals that keep feeding into, particularly, the Treasury Secretary's perch. Keep it up!

Anyone who has played sport, let alone at professional and international level, will be able to empathize with Adam through the highs and lows of his rugby career.
