A Wonderful Family Saga

An Irish Family Saga Book 3 - Tom and Patrick Gallagher were young boys living with their father, Thomas Gallagher, originally from Blackrock, Ireland. The two young boys got into a brawl. Patrick was severely injured; their father, Thomas put them on a steamship for Blackrock and instructed them to find Maggie's house to receive help. James' sister, Maggie nursed Patrick until he was healed and healthy again.

The saga of James and Mary McGrother continues with their relatives and children in Ireland. The children are grown and are paving a path for their own lives.

The author has pulled all the books together making a great historical entertaining novel for her readers. I was so excited and so involved in reading I didn't take the time to write reviews after every book. Now I am playing catch up writing reviews. WOW! What a great history lesson. I absolutely loved every book, I didn't want them to end.

Really great historical novel with personal characters.

I love this novel for it's story and characters, which were so cozy to go to sleep with but also kept me up with suspense and concern for them as well. I also loved the book because it gave some really good history of the Irish in the 1800's and the challenges both at home and in the US. Making it about those issues but with such heartwarming, real characters was great! I could just imagine my ancestors going through some of these things and in fact, they had! It really fleshed out some of the family stories I'd heard over the years. Thanks to the author for writing it and I am awaiting the next in the series to come out. I've read them all now. I recommend reading them in order, which I didn't but soon realized I had to go back to the beginning to really get the story correctly. Much more informative that way.

Review. A Turning of the Tide

A very good book. It is historical and that makes it very interesting. The characters are so real to life that they seem like friends. I like the way this author writes and would recommend her books to others.

Hellos & Goodbyes

Continuing Mary and James McGrother's story of life in a troubled Ireland readers find themselves saying hello to new characters while saying a farewell to others. I found this book as hard to put down as I found the first two in the saga. It amazes me how I can be transported to another time and place by a talented author. The characters in these books became real to me. I felt as though I was actually sharing the joys and sorrows of "friends" rather than fictional characters. I thank Ms Reinhardt for educating me as well as touching my heart with her words.

Loving following the lives of these characters. I feel I know them.

LOVE THIS

I have all of the Shardlake full cast performances & love them all.

Each one focuses on a murderous theme set during the reign of Henry Viii and Katherine Parr which is perfect for me as I am in the middle of studying period 1200 C to the end of Queen Elizabeth 1st.

So well produced you actually feel you are taken back to the grubby dirty stinking times of Henrys kingdom as his subjects fight one another in their plight for truth in the era of religious mania.

Full of atmosphere, torture, scheming, prostitution, treachery, treason and so much more as we follow the humpbacked sleuth. I hope we can look forward to several more Shardlake adventures.

powerful

first I must say I was given this book for free and in no way does that influence my review.

I am hooked. This series is gripping in twists, turns, deciept and honor. The mystery keeps you searching for answers, but the honor displayed by some stirs sonething inside each and every one who listens to this book. From great battles that leave you breathless to the love and the loss portraied you won't be able to stop listening.

Fabulous book in a fabulous series.

The beginning of the end for an Empire

Gordon Doherty completes his Strategos trilogy in the same manner it started - well researched and historically details, providing a background for an engaging story. The story takes us to the Battle of Manzikert, which in 1071 saw the first major defeat of the Byzantium Empire after a couple of centuries of expansion. While the Empire eventually recovered and continued for several centuries after this, with varying levels of growth and decay, this was a major blow of it causing the loss of a large section of the Empire and creating decades of unrest.

The last 20 minutes of the audioobook are actually Doherty providing details on his research and what he modified - he admits where he compresses timelines or skips things for the sake or the story. He has also exaggerated some historical characters, particularly the 'villains' of the story, to increase the tension and build the story.

The story is interesting and well told. It also provides a solid ending for Apion's story.

There is potentially a reliance on the heroes being undermined by their own men, rather than their own failings. For example at one point the Strategos is given an impossible choice to make, neither strategically good. But he creates a third option that would work except that he is unknowingly betrayed and the option fails to nothing, forcing the decision of one of the bad choices. I felt like Doherty used the third option and the betrayal to cover over the historicity of the character/army making a bad choice. Like he couldn't allow for his character to have this be his fault. But Doherty explicitly talks about one of the other betrayals in his historical section stating that it really happened, so maybe this one did and I'm reading too much into it.

Narration by Rob Goll is good.

An old favourite revisited in audio form

Excellent story with plenty of drama as well as the expected historical accuracy and interest.

Araminta is an unusual early nineteenth century heroine in that she has sense as well as intelligence and personal attractiveness, but sadly the intelligence is well-hidden by the narrator's insipid rendition.

A listener could be forgiven for believing that Araminta is a brainless rustic doll which considerably spoils the story. The narrator's delivery is that of a nursery teacher reading to a group of under fives, there are a number of mistakes in reading which changes meaning in some places, and overall is not conducive to drama.

If you know and love the book it may be better to stick to print.

extraordinarily relevant today as it was 100 years

An excellent insight into the abject poverty of the pre war years as relevant today as ever it was.

Terrible narration

Im not sure this is a story, but it is sending a message from the start of the 20th century which is sadly as true today as it was then.

However I cant finish the book because the narration is awful and in addition I dont think the book has been edited. Im 6 hours in and already 2 parts have been repeated.

Plus ca change! Like reading last week's paper

Loved it. Job insecurity, employment concerns. too much month at the end of the pay check, political corruption, it's all here. Couldn't recommend it more highly. Only complaint, having the title of the book read at the beginning of each chapter but please, don't be put off by that. I just finished it & am listening to it again as there's so much in it, that a second listen is needed to pick up on the many themes it raises. Stellar!

great book - inexperienced narrator

This is a really fun story. Percy's character is so likeable. the narrator has a great French accent, but besides that, was kind of monotone. This so far is the only option I saw to be able to listen to this book, so it was fine, but I might recommend just reading the book rather than listening to it in that case.

brilliant and funny

I picked this because of the narrator, Braden Wright is one of my fave voices to listen to.

Not my usual genre, but I am glad I did. The emotions, the odd friendship between the 3 boys, the quirky workings of their teenage minds and the hilarious quips that had me laughing out loud, makes this story a delight and not easily forgotten. I recommend it with 5 stars.

Mr. Wright did an amazing job as usual, the voices he gave the characters were defined and the emotions clearly felt.

Timeless love story beautifully told

What did you like best about this story?

A classic that always feels fresh. Perfect balance of humor and heartbreak. Terrific that an audiobook is now available. The movie is equally good. I am a longtime fan of the author's work and recommend his other novels and films, too.

An incredible story...beautiful and completely engrossing. I read it years ago and never tire of it...this audiobook is as amazing an iteration as the Oscar-nominated film!

Well written, In spite of the deep seeded racism, and acts of cruelty, and anti- miscegenation laws which enforced racial segregation, this story proves that True Love conquers all. Once I began reading, I couldn't put it down.

I though this documentary novel was written very well . The events were easy to follow. This was a page turner .

I recommend this to book clubs and the leisure reader.

It is a well-intention book, but the author succeeded in making his own attitude clear - admiration of assassins and hatred of Heydrich, but did not

succeed in making the characters come alive. Maybe French intellectuals should stick to writing books about other French intellectuals - Binet's "The Seventh Function of Language" is a much better book than this one, and if anything, I would recommend reading it instead. Unlike the heroes of this book, the only shot Binet takes - at Jonathan Littell - misses by a wide margin. He claims that Aue's character is not well-written because a Nazi could not possibly be like him. Sorry, but Aue rings much truer than any character in this book, because he is written by a better writer. It does not matter if a Nazi could be like him - it only matters than a human being can be like him.
