Ann Treneman, Political sketch writer for the Times, spent about four years doing what shes termed "graveing". She traveled around Britain asking people what their favorite graves are, tracking down the most interesting dead people and the most iconic, historical, and architectural graves. She found that "people with interesting graves were exactly that themselves". Trying to keep this strange travel guide fun, she stayed away from recent graves and murder victims, using the monuments to embrace life, not death. Lucy Patterson performs the audiobook with a smile and a wink at the conceivably morbid subject matter that makes one imagine a wry sort of Miss Marple investigating the "plots" of Britain.

Interesting idea, but alas was rather dull

On reading the publishers summary this appears to be an interesting and unusual audiobook, but alas there are two main issues:

i) Lucy Paterson, the narrator, has a great clarity to her voice though sadly it lacked any warmth or humour. To some this may not pose a problem, but with an audiobook of nearly 8 hours it needs to be told in an interesting way otherwise it can easily just become background noise.

ii) The publishers summary said part travelogue, well this is technically true, but it should read very small part. Therefore the book lacked any contrast and quickly became a repetitive history lesson for each of the graves residents and what with the bland narration the last few hours seemed to never end.

Some people may find this to be the bestest audiobook ever, but I do implore you to listen to the sample first and consider whether you could listen to 473 minutes of it.

Good, but a ttle confusing.

This book is a good overview of the vampire societies of England and America, though it focuses primarily on England. What is a little bit off putting about the book, is that in many places it states vampires are not "real". In the sense that they are not undead bloodsuckers. But then the book operates on the premise that vampires are a seperate species, who exist alongside humanity, taking what little they need, when they need it. Although, if you do suspect you are a vampire, or just want to pretend, it's a good book. With many details I didn't know before. I do, however believe there is only one species of Human.

Did I miss Roswell?

Audry Grant has managed to push a substantial number of urban stories about close encounters into a single excellent piece. It is clear that the final question is a very relevant one and the answer is likely to be that we will find what we look for out there but the chances of getting from one place to another seems remote to us.

I very much enjoyed the style and development of this work and if you enjoy aliens then you will enjoy them in the mist!

Short UFO tease

I have been researching the UFO enigma for the past 20 years and read all I can get my hands on. Although I read nothing new, I enjoyed this short synopsis of classics about my favorite subject. Audry has packed these few short pages with enough information to taunt readers to explore this subject with more depth

She then trained as a teacher and married Healey in 1945 after his military service in World War II. She became Baroness Healey in 1992 when her husband received a life peerage. Though she began her writing career relatively late in life, her books were critically acclaimed and sometimes best-sellers. She wrote non-fiction books, often biographies of successful women in powerful positions. Lady Healey also made two award-winning television documentaries. She was elected in 1993 a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

A very worthwhile biography

This is a well written biography of a little known woman. In detailing Miss Coutts' life, Edna Healey inevitably details the conventions which placed limits on what women could do. In almost all of her charitable works, Miss Coutts relied upon or had recourse to men - perhaps if she had been male she would not have remained a shadowy figure in the history of Victorian England. Nonetheless, she was a compassionate and determined women who was a pioneer in concern for the poor and much of her fortune went towards improving their lot in life. Her friendship with Charles Dickens shed new light (for me) on his work for the poor. In some ways Miss Coutts' life was typical of the life of a well-off Victorian woman - at-homes, continental travel, health cures, and this does become slightly monotonous, but there is a parade of famous characters who regularly brighten the scene.

Victor Sawdon Pritchett (1900-1997) was born over a toyshop in 1900 and, much to his everlasting distaste, was named after Queen Victoria. A writer and critic, his is widely reputed to be one of the best short story writers of all time, with the rare ability to capture the extraordinary strangeness of everyday life. He died in 1997.

A stylist on a stylist

George Meredith remains the most unstudied and undervalued of the great Victorian writers. Of the ten books or so of Meredith criticism that I have come across, this book seems to me the best. It is too brief and spends too much space taking one through the plots of some of the novels, but Pritchett, as himself a distinguished writer of fiction, writes with real insight and authority on the originality of Meredith's technique, which anticipate many of the techniques of modernism. Since at the same time Pritchett's own style is remarkably elegant and felicitous, this is a book of real distinction.

Hilarious and life-affirming

I laughed out loud a lot listening to this book. If you enjoy Caitlin Moran, you'll probably enjoy this too. It's full of great replies to the nonsense often spouted about what is and what isn't "feminist". It's heart-felt but never maudlin. Just lovely.

I really enjoyed hearing it in Hadley's own voice. She writes as if she were speaking to you, so it would actually be odd if someone else read it!

Laugh out loud funny, sound advice

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book is laugh out loud funny. I'm normally very skeptical when I read that in a review but it genuinely had me laughing throughout.

Her advice is sound and very true, I found myself agreeing with what Hadley says throughout the book.
