    Title: The Young Atheist's Handbook
    Author: Alom Shaha
    Narrator: Alom Shaha
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 46 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-14-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Growing up in a strict Muslim community in London, Alom Shaha learnt that religion was not to be questioned. Reciting the Qur'an without understanding what it meant was simply part of life; so was obeying the imam and enduring beatings when he failed to attend the local mosque. Shaha was more drawn to science, and as a teen, he lived between two worlds: the home controlled by his authoritarian father, and a school alive with books and ideas.
In this charming blend of memoir, philosophy, and science, Shaha explores the questions about faith and the afterlife that we all ponder. This powerful, insightful handbook is a must for anyone who thinks about what they should believe and how they should live.

    Fantastic book
I am an atheist, raised Catholic by an Irish mother whose brother was a priest and two sisters, nuns. Take the word "Muslim" and replace it with the word "Catholic" and you have the story of my journey to atheism. It was the adult hypocrisy and utter lack of compassion that has driven me, my siblings and peers away from the Catholic Church. Particularly the churches altitude toward women and vcontraception. Does no one in the Catholic Church understand that virgin men (priests) preaching about sex to sexually active women is cosmetically tragic.
    A gentle conversation
I really enjoyed this autobiographical apologetic for atheism. There is a gentleness and sensitivity in the author's approach that permits a relaxed engagement with the ideas that contrasts with the more strident writings of some other atheists. It's a very personal narrative that wraps within it some of the traditional arguments against theism which provides the book with a seductive pull that enables one to listen to the author rather than react adversarially - at least, that's how I experienced it. A narrow-minded fundamentalist of any persuasion will probably not even read the book given its title. That would be a shame. Even committed theists would do well to start listening to the journeys of non-theists if only to have a genuine understanding of the "other's" point of view.It is also refreshing to hear about atheism from an ex-Muslim perspective. The majority of atheist writings (I think) deal with the specifically Christian versions of theism. Of course, there are many other forms of theism within which believers struggle and emerge into some form atheism. This story enriches atheist writings with nuances that would be beneficial for atheists also to read. One of the most compelling aspects of this book is the way in which it illustrates the power of experience in shaping our beliefs. Very few people are convinced to change their beliefs by argument - even ones that are logically compelling. Our culture, family history, life events, where we're born - all of these and more are more influential than argument in shaping us. The author, by telling his life story, supplemented later perhaps by supporting arguments, illustrates this beautifully. This is not a book to argue with - it's a story to listen to and meditate on.

    An interesting self-inndulgence!
Dessaix, may be considered an excellent author but this piece of writing is quite patchy. I was expecting much more. I had heard so much good about his extraordinary ability that I was a bit let-down.

    Bryan's Brain
The book is made up of chapters that tell the story of growing up "Bryan". They don't really run together to form a plot but rather they form in the readers mind this character "Bryan". The stories are funny because they are so relateable. I remember my brother spending an entire summer being Superman. So the chapter of Bryan's exploits as a four year old Superman brought back my own memories and entertained me. What confuses me some, though, is that the disclaimer in the front of the book states that the book is a work of fiction - and all incidents are a product of the author's imagination. I don't know what this means. If the book really is fiction - it is not as cute and fun. So I chose to believe that the whole thing really constitutes a collection of Mr. Healey's memories of growing up. There is nothing Earth shattering or spectacular about the incidents related here but that is to the author's credit. Instead it is the daily happenings and growth of the boy that warms the heart and causes the smiles.
The only other things I have to say are really nit picky. There is a quote on the front of the book attributed to Barak Obama (and I'm sure he said it - just not about this book) which bothered me and some of the narrative could be construed in such a way as to be rather politically incorrect. Neither of these things took away from my enjoyment of the book but are worth mentioning as a caution to future readers.

Bryan's Brain is a comedic series of short stories of the life of Bryan Healey. He details a bunch of episodes in his rather entertaining life. I found it to be humorous and I found myself stifling laughter (which would have been strange given my circumstances) multiple times. I really did enjoy the book and all his funny stories in it. Some of the stories revolved around typical child pursuits, trips to Disney, baseball and wanting to explore, while others showed off his more eccentric side - the desire to build his own Jurassic Park or his own time traveling DeLorean.
It was a decent length, although I was slightly disappointed that there weren't more stories by the time I reached the end. I would be glad to read this again (once I've forgotten most of the plot points of course though!)
    Highly enjoyable collection of essays
An extremely funny anthology of essays from Bryan Healey.
Bryan leads us through a childhood full of obsessions....ranging from his attempts to build a time machine out of his mother's minivan, to deciding to buy his own private mountain, and his life's goal of opening his own dinosaur theme park.
Bryan's stories are both funny and sweet in their child-like enthusiasm. He never takes himself too seriously, and in fact spices up his tales with a healthy dose of sarcasm and self-deprecating humor....all of which only add to the enjoyment of the book.

Was facinated by this true story.
On a New Year cruise I met the young girl on the front cover of I'm Hungary, Daddy. Helen is now a mature adult, she is a happy person & it goes to show that with a dreadful beginning ones life can be turned around. Helen adored her "Daddy" & talked at great lengths about him.
I am so pleased that I read this book.

    Publisher's Summary:
"I was six when my father died so my mother has been everything to me. Wherever I go I tell the world about my wonderful mother. I'm a singer today because of her encouragement. She has been the biggest influence in my life - Daniel O'Donnell.
Irish singing star Daniel O'Donnell's mother, Julia, grew up on a remote island off the northwest coast of Ireland, going barefoot and doing hard labour as a child during the poverty-stricken 1920s. The hard work continued through her teenage years as she picked potatoes in the fields and travelled to Scotland to gut fish in the ports. After she married and settled in Kincasslagh, Julia's beloved husband, Francie, was forced to leave his family for months on end to work on farms, again in Scotland. The work was physically demanding and eventually took its toll.
Sadly, Julia found herself widowed and penniless with five children while still in her forties. In this classic and inspiring story of triumph over adversity, Julia tells how she battled through this dark period by knitting sweaters into the early hours of every night to support her family. They were sold in America by relatives and the money was sent back to Ireland by post. Then, in an amazing twist of fate, this hard-working woman and dedicated mother watched from the wings as her offspring flourished in life. Her daughter Margo and son Daniel went on to achieve fame as chart-topping singers.
In The Mother's Story, Julia takes us on a journey from her humble beginnings growing up in a thatched cottage on Owey Island, to a glitzy lifestyle mingling with celebrities and royalty. Poignant, warm and laced with great humour, Julia's story gives us a fascinating insight into this remarkable Irish family's life.

Excellent book of a dear woman's life. Certainly she was a real Mother and loved deeply.
Behind Every Good Man is a Good Woman
It was pure enjoyment to read this book written by the Mother of a man I greatly admire. I have been acquainted with her son, Daniel, since December 2002. That was when I first saw him on PBS and discovered an entertainer I could love not only for his exceptional easy-listening singing voice, choice of songs, and stage presence; but because he was down-to-earth, honest, humble, and always spoke of his Mother in a respectful, loving, and admiring way.
I have met him several times in Branson and have received replies to the many letters I have written him and even received a phone call after writing my first fan letter. Not many famous entertainers take time to respond to their fans and meet hundreds of them in the lobby for pictures after giving them nearly three hours on stage. His Mother's story proved to me why 'behind every good man is a good woman'! Not perfect of course, no mother is; but after becoming a heartbroken widow, she put her distress aside and supported, loved, and inspired her five young children to be their best with the talents God gave them.
Her story is one of the most inspiring I have ever read, and I highly recommend it. I am not only a fan of Daniel's for life, but of Julia O'Donnell as well. May God continue to bless her and her wonderful family.
a great read and very interesting on her life and family

Length: 6 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-23-12
    Publisher: Warren P. Weitzel
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Them's bullets! I thought to myself. And I kept running. When I reached a clump of trees I took cover immediately and started shaking all over. Those bastards are shooting at me and trying to kill me! What seemed like a minute of fear was probably only a few seconds, and then it kicked in. I instinctively raised my M-16 and fired away, emptying the 20-round clip. Bullets were zinging through the air all over the place. Thiswas combat!
In 1966, the son of a mild-mannered ex-Marine sharpshooter was a manager at an amusement park in San Jose, CA. Warren Weitzel received his invitation from the government to participate in the ongoing conflict in Vietnam. The Army wasn't what he was expecting, but Weitzel manages to combine his life training with the Army's training, and survived for a year "in country". And so here are his observations, good and bad, as a sergeant in a combat platoon.

    One man's experience well told
I just read Tally Ho-Green in one sitting. To say it draws the reader in would be an understatement. It is the story of how one man navigated the journey from the most idyllic and innocent world (that of Frontier Village Amusement Park) to an unimaginable world that was the polar opposite and, thankfully, back again. It is both starkly real and funny at the same time. The reader knows that this is a first person account, so knows the author will survive the dangers he writes about, but that doesn't make it any less riveting. At times, it is edge of your seat, lip bitingly, suspenseful. At times I laughed out loud. My favorite quotes involve references to "yucky leeches" and the truly inaccurate description "simple-minded sergeant with an amusement-park background." I found myself tearing up at the honest accounts of myriad of situations, but most of all at a mother's reaction to seeing her son safely home.
Full disclosure: I know the author, he was my first boss and is a man I have always greatly admired and respected. I realize the courage it took for this very private man to write this account and I am grateful that he did. I hope more men who served in Viet Nam can find a way to write to tell their experiences. If they could perhaps it might help resolve some of the strong feelings about the war that has scarred our generation especially those who served (most by `special invitation' as the author calls it. This is not a political story; it is a very human and very honest one.
I think this book is a "must read" for all, but most especially for those who served and for those of us who waited, and worried, and wanted the war to end so all the soldiers could come home.
    A window into a war
Warren Weitzel's book gives us a look into war. I know that's been done many times, but this specifically gives us a look at a type of fighting most of us, heck almost nobody has any knowledge of. This may be the kind of fighting our fathers, and or, fiends participated in and have been hesitant, to say the least, about sharing with us. Now we may understand why.
This may not be the most eloquent book you've ever read, but it will put you in the shoes of a combat soldier who was in the thick of it in Viet Nam. It maybe help you understand why so many vets have had so little to say about their time there, and why they were different when they returned home.
Warren has shared an important part of his life in this book.
