It's a summary of a biography

Very good but I didn't read the run time, it's more a synopsis than a biography. Interesting all the same.

Inspiring a feel good book.

I downloaded this book as I so enjoy Andy's work but was unaware of his background or how like mine it had been.

I was very disappointed when I had to switch off and get some work done. Whilst doing the work it gave me the inspiration to do something special with my year.....

Paul Thornley is a great narrator who makes one believe you are there beside Andy though his life. He gets into scrapes but good prevails.He goes from unwanted by one woman for whatever reason - to very much wanted by by the nation. It is a good feel story that everyone should read/listen to.

He proves that it is not where you have come from but where you are going to that matters.

maybe not so much power but "opportunity and choices". This may be one to try with those who thinks school/learning is useless : ) If you are a late reader you'll find a lot to encourage you. If you want a great but short story, listen on!

This is McNab's autobiography starting with his childhood and school - a total waste of time he thinks- ending up in the Infantry and meeting a man who started as he did, funcionaly illiterate, who rose through the noncommisioned ranks to be commisioned as a Captain (at the time many old soldiers think of retirement) in order to teach lads like McNab the joy and opportunity that lies in reading and learning. McNab goes on to qualify for the SAS, where he finds the joy and necesity of learning anew - blowing things up is best done with... ah. Well, listen and find out..!

This book started off interesting to me with the surprise that Brenda spent her childhood in the little village I did (I was unaware of this before starting the book).

If you like Call the Midwife then you will like this book, on a whole it's less dramatic but at least it is all real (where as Call the Midwife goes into great long details and conversations that the author wasn't even there let alone remembers accurately).

It was very interesting to hear of how life used to be and the priorities people had at the time. It's written well and makes you feel like you get to know the people in the book.

A cosy, comforting listen and wonderful story

Not being able to afford a Norland nanny, I've wanted to give the same experience to my toddler - this was such a lovely listen. As well as having some good ideas, it is a superb biography, set in wartime England during the 1930s and 1940s. The audio book also reinforces how fun and unconditional love needs to be an important part of every childhood.

A great read about a man and his life.

First of all, if you haven't read "A False Spring" first, you should do that or you might not know what drives a lot of his motivation. Having said that, this is an incredibly story of a flawed human being coming to terms with himself, his past and his future. What I liked most about it is his casual style in telling a story. He will start at one place, go back to another and then back to another and then return to where he started. Some might find this confusing or call it "circumstantial" or "a flight of ideas" but it reminds of conversations with my best friends where the talk just flows from one topic to the next and if it comes back around, that's OK and if not, hey, we enjoyed the ride. It truly is a good read.

A very ballsy book about ... well, about life and living

Dear Pat,

I finished reading your book, A Nice Tuesday, today while waiting in the dentist's office - a bit of pleasure before pain. Because it was a real pleasure reading your story. I found myself laughing out loud in many parts of the book. My wife kept asking me what was so funny. But then when I'd read the passage to her, she often just didn't get it. Too often, it was "a guy thing." The truth is, at 65 I'm not the "guy" I once was, but I like to remember those times, and your book kept bringing them back, particularly your rowdy and irreverent attitude towards all things sexual. It made me remember all the "war stories" and lies my buddies and I used to tell each other in the barracks so long ago my first time around in the army, when most of us were actually still virgins and knew very little about women. (See Soldier Boy: At Play in the ASA) Sports, fast cars and women were always popular subjects for those sessions. You cover all those subjects, along with dogs.

This trilogy is a great read

My mother bought me Narrow Dog to Carcassonne when we hired a boat on the Canal du Midi. I read it when we got home, and got much more out of it, I think, than I would have had I read it before the holiday - I understood far more about the difficulties, dangers and joys of canal boating. Like Terry, I was somewhat disturbed that people get so little instruction before being allowed out on their own with such a massive vessel! For the first few pages I thought the writing style was...er...quirky - but I was quickly pulled in and thereafter loved it and couldn't put it down. As soon as I'd finished that book I bought the other two, and enjoyed them just as much. Thoroughly recommend all three books, and will keep hoping for another!

Kept my interest but jumped all over the place.

Terry does it again!

I loved Terry Darlington's earlier two "Narrow Dog" books, and Narrow Dog to Wigan Pier is just as enjoyable. Not only does he narrate another canal adventure in his inimitable way, he also tells some of his personal past. I'm always curious about an author whose books I love, so was glad that he satisfied my wonderings. I just love his sense of humor and I'm sure I'll re-read this and the other "Narrow Dog" books again and again in the years to come.

FINALLY!

Finally, the 3rd "Narrow Dog" book has arrived! I came across the first book in an airport when I was looking for something to read to pass the time while waiting for my delayed flight. Fell in love with the story, the way it is written, and the very British sense of humor. The second book - same thing. When I read there was a third one, I was eager to get it. It has been a couple of years, but it is finally available in the U.S. Worth the wait! Hope Mr. Darlington has many more adventures and books in his future!
