Nine years of living with dying and raising three teens while working dawn to dusk. Slowly, I eased through it. Slowly, I developed a realization of my priorities, who I was, and where I belong. A world where handshakes are meaningless, love is a memory tear sliding down my cheek and death has become too-close of a companion. How could I keep going? Bird feathers, dolphins, a moon that brought me up short-these were the symbols that showed me the way. And gradually I attained a family, my family filled with love. Gradually, I acquired a confidence to move on and explore my new voice.

    Unrelatable...
I bought this book because I like the author's way of writing.
I bought this book because of its positive reviews.
But the adept writing can't overlook a narrator whose voice I can easily tune out, or an author whose obsessiveness causes her to invade her husband's privacy to obtain his medical information, or whose privilege enables her to send her daughter to boarding school, or her family to Greece to grieve and heal...
I don't discount her losses, but I honestly didn't like her much...

    Publisher's Summary:
Franks autobiography shows him to be truly one of a kind. For example, while he is a good team player he is always fiercely individualistic and independent, and should circumstances bring about a conflict between the two his independence wins out. This autobiography also shows that from his youth Frank was adventurous. From his teenage years he travelled - first to the countries neighboring his homeland (Germany), and then, at age 19 he travelled from Germany to Pakistan by bicycle.
This, in spite of times of deep loneliness along the way, lack of money, and sometimes fear in often dangerous circumstances. Further, Frank reveals that he has from the beginning shown a strong Protestant work ethic - even in his days as a young Catholic. He has always been driven to complete what was started. Finally, beneath a façade of, shall we say, earthy humor is the heart and soul of a deeply, intensely spiritual and godly man. All of this is to say that just as Paul was the only one in the primitive church who could have been the apostle to the Gentiles, so Frank is the only one of my acquaintances who could have ever been used by God to found the boys homes which are called Prem Sewa Shikshan Sangh.
Taken from the foreword by Dr. Roger Stronstad.

    Publisher: Crossroad Press

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
America's strength has always been her people. Never has this strength been more evident than in time of war. From the Revolution on, the history of America at war has always been the history of ordinary men and women doing extraordinary things. But in the past, it has taken years, sometimes even decades, for those heroic men and women to be heard, for their individual stories to be told. In the current era, with electronic media making the news instantaneously available around the world, one would think that would no longer be the case.
In America's latest war, the electronic media brought us only the men and women at the top - leaders like General Schwarzkopf, General Kelly, and Pete Williams, the official voice of the Pentagon. But the real stories, the stories of courage under fire, were half a world away - in Khafji and Dhahran, Basra and the barren wastes of the Iraqi desert. The stories were there because America's men and women were there, with M-16s and artillery, in tanks and in attack aircraft, in the tents and in the trenches.
Every service was represented - Army, Navy, Air Force, and U.S. Coast Guard. The career soldiers were there and so were the citizen soldiers of the reserves. These are their stories, told in their own way. These are the Desert Voices.

You really do want to read/hear this book!
The publisher's summary doesn't do this book justice despite the fact that they germinated the seed of the idea. LaBarge was already a published author when he received the call to interview and collate this collection of individual personal testimonies of American personnel who fought or were directly affected by Desert Storm and Desert Shield. Although this Nam Vet was still active duty at the time, he was ruled ineligible to go near the zone, thus it was arranged that he conduct his interviews primarily at the Tent City at base in Germany where returnees had layover between flights. Just before he left for Germany, he was fortunate to be able to take advantage of a welcoming celebration at Camp Pendleton and, with the assistance of his wife, begin his task. Legalities were covered by the publisher and the military, and the names and home town are given.
This volume is the result of that endeavor. I salute him for his task performance, and for being able to select only 50+ of those interviews. There are no apparent leading questions or format, as the statements reflect no such uniformity. In their own words, here are the statements of persons from the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force (both active duty and reserves), USO, civilian contractors, and even a dad. Their work included: computer techs, airborne, supply, evac tech, nurse, medic, infantry, tanks, refuel, nutritionist, pilot, recon, demolition, mobilization, and civil engineer. They were single, married, divorced, committed, parents, sons and daughters. They were from cities, towns, and rural areas all over this country. Each faced the separation from the familiar, uncertainties each day, fear of Scud missiles and land mines and opposition forces, as well as the effect of their absence on their lives back home. Some were even tasked stateside to cover for active duty personnel sent to the Middle East.

    A Crazy Kid's Army Experience
What made the experience of listening to Chutes, Beer, & Bullets the most enjoyable?
The book reads like rough fiction. I had to remind myself that that it's a true, albeit strange... um... very strange story at times. I was incredulous at the author's embrace of being the butt of gay innuendo.
It's army life from the view of a class clown. His injury during battle somehow brings depth.
It was worth the read to see the world through Jesse's insanity. ;-)
What was one of the most memorable moments of Chutes, Beer, & Bullets?
I think I have an image of pringles indelibly etched into my mind. I'll never be able to eat pringles again.
What about Greg Barretts performance did you like?
I was doubtful about the performance at first... until I heard Jesse in a video playing the preacher.
I normally "read" audio books at 1.5 to 2 times speed. Greg Barrett reads really fast... so I slowed it down to 1 x speed. The southern accent fit.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I was shocked at quite a bit of what I read. I won't ruin it for other's by describing it here.
Laugh? Cry? I had to retrieve my jaw from the floor.
    Any additional comments?
The writing is not polished. Personally, I think that works in the book's favor. It fits with the content.
I can imagine a movie coming out of this.
Couldn't get past the second chapter
Would you try another book from Jesse C. Holder and/or Greg Barrett?
Not until the former took a few writing classes and the latter spent some time in a drama class. I found the writing to be very elementary and the reading to feel rushed and out of place.
What didnt you like about Greg Barretts performance?
First of all, he sounded way too old to read on behalf of a twenty-something young man. It was very distracting, particularly when trying to use slang or vernacular used by younger generations... it just didn't sound right. He also rushed through the book, not taking the time to properly deliver passages that were meant to be funny - he had no comedic timing.
    Any additional comments?
I picked up this book because I thought it might mirror the similar experiences I enjoyed while in the army in Europe. Unfortunately the unoriginal writing style and horrendous reading made impossible for me to get past the second chapter. Very disappointing.

    Narrator: Jeff Bower
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 48 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-07-12
    Publisher: ROLLIS FONTENOT JR
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The author writes memoirs of growing up and dealing with many negative issues in a positive way. Issues dealt with were serious, but with a positive attitude they were delt with head on. He feels that his experience will provide encouragement for young ones growing up in less-than-ideal situations.
"My mother and father had five children when we lost her and another child at childbirth. I was only four years old. Later we got a stepmother, and eventually two more children. I grew up extremely shy, had to deal with segregation and our family was poor, to name a few issues I had to deal with.
"As I grew up, I was able to find a way to deal with all the issues I was faced with. A positive attitude, family, and a good sense of humor were real assets in finding joy in my humble life," says the author.

A humble child's journey to manhood
If you're looking for a literary masterpiece this isn't what this story is about but if you are looking for an insight to the tough yet interesting and inspiring journey to manhood of a plucky adventurous young boy, this will sadden and gladden your heart. Amid poverty in the backwoods of Louisiana where his dear mother died when he just a toddler, under the stern yet loving hand of his father and family, Rollis never bemoaned his lot in life but from a very early age displayed a loving heart and concern for others. Now grown into his 60's that love in his heart still keeps right on growing. I loved it!!
Growing Up When Times Were Simple
This book contains the thoughts of a young man who has grown up in the south and at a time when racism was prevalent; though this is not the theme of the book. Growing up in a large family that gives support and love and maintains both its Christian principles and its sense of humor even through the hard times is a delightful change from the norm. It contains a message that is refreshingly innocent, honest, and positive.

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Willing to Engage is a prequel to A Diamond on the Wall, the memoir of my experiences in Vietnam. It is my fervent hope, that by telling the remainder of my story, I might somehow stop someone from pulling the trigger of a gun, or swallowing pills, in their desire to end their life, or the lives of others.
Too many people are surrendering all hope, because they see no future, or because they consider themselves "hopeless losers", caught up in horrible circumstances, with no out but death. I also hope to motivate today's youth to become involved; to labor with all who are willing to put forth an effort to stop the insanity that is causing such dismay (politically and socially).
Together, we can make great strides, but we must be willing to engage in order to accomplish the much needed results. Furthermore, this book is a wake-up-call for the personal involvement and participation of every citizen, to set aright the deplorable condition of today's world.

Four years later, after 40 operations and several brushes with death, Cindy received a miraculous heart transplant that saved her life. Cindy relied on the Lord as her strength through all the trials and pain, providing her many opportunities to share His love with others.
Her story is not only inspiring - it shows how trust in God provides the strength to get through any "disease" of the heart. Whether you are facing illness, divorce, loss, or another difficult situation, you will find A Heart Like Mine beats with the encouragement you need to seek Gods will in the midst of turmoil.

    "Special People"
There are some people who I will classify as "special people" and Cindy is one of them. She is a beautiful person that doesn't focus on her misfortunes, but on God, his will, and his plan for her on this Earth. We all have a journey to achieve on this Earth, and as we journey down the path of life, we leave numerous marks along the way. Cindy has made a spiritual difference in my life and I am sure the lives of many of the people that she comes in contact with. After reading this book, you realize, how in an instant your own life can change, and that by putting your trust 100% into the Lord, all things are possible. Cindy is a remarkable woman, and a very talented writer. Thank you Cindy for sharing a part of you with me.
Inspriational True Story of a Heart Transplant Survivor's Journey
Cindy Scinto was a healthy, young woman when she had her first heart attack in her 40s. What happened during the next 7 years took over two pages just to list in her book.
Multiple heart surgeries and procedures, a dramatic, near-death experience, and a heart transplant would have caused most people to give up and give in to chronic illness. Yet over and over again, Cindy chooses to turn to God for help and finds spiritual meaning in all that she has gone through. Through each new trial, you will find yourself amazed at her endurance, hope and humor as her faith in the Lord never lets her down. I was always rooting for her as she faced yet another crisis and came through "the fire" with greater faith and stronger hope.
Cindy is clearly learning to love the new life she has, the "new normal" instead of crawling into a permanent pity party.
If you have health problems, are suffering from chronic illness and maybe even sometimes feel God may have forgotten about you, I would encourage you to read Cindy's book. If you know someone who fits the description above this book could provide a real source of encouragement and hope for them as it did for me.
    Inspiring!
I had the opportunity to meet author/speaker Cindy Scinto after one of her speaking engagements (she's very engaging and funny!) I was glad she told me about this audio book. I love the way she writes, and when she reads her own words it's as if she is right there in the room with you. Her struggles are unprecedented and her book is motivating.
