    Title: Just Beyond Harmony
    Author: Gaydell Collier
    Narrator: Diana Andrade
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-09-12
    Publisher: Brook Forest Voices
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Armed with idealistic visions of the West, Gaydell from Garden City, New York, and her husband, Roy of Hinsdale, Illinois, embark on The Grand Experiment during the 1960s: raising their four children in a primitive Wyoming log cabin built by early Swedish settlers without modern amenities, to teach the "youngsters" values and self-reliance. Fifty years later, Gaydell chronicles her familys experience from unearthed diaries and letters she had written to her mother during the cabin years. She recalls the joy, dreams, humor, struggles and growth for the kids, Roy, and most of all, herself.
    Critic Reviews:
"Originally begun 30-plus years ago, the book became sidetracked by family and work obligations; recently re-discovered diaries and letters provided Collier with the forgotten details and dialogue to spur completion of this fascinating, humorous, thought-provoking account of living a very alternative lifestyle." (Reference & Research Book News)
    Members Reviews:
This book even pleased my mother!
I laughed my way through Gaydell Collier's memoir, Just Beyond Harmony, comparing notes and often saying "Well . . . we never quite had to contend with that!" Then I passed the book on to my 87-year-old mother, who's never been easy to please, who read it through in an afternoon and threatens mayhem to anyone who fails to return her copy! She has also dropped the use of "favorite vulgarities" and has substituted instead, according to the habits of Collier's late husband Ray, such words as "Washington!" . . . and other such political euphemisms.
Never lived without a television? Never cooked every meal on an old wood cook stove? Never tiptoed in the dark of night, flashlight in hand, to the outhouse? Such experiences broaden the soul, make a real man, or woman, of you and leave most people wondering just what makes you tick! The Colliers' "great experiment"--living a self-reliant, homestead-style life in a little cabin, for years abandoned (the tale of it's clean-up is a special treat!), not far from Harmony, near Laramie, Wyoming--makes for a great story.
The author's wit and patience show through on every page of Just Beyond Harmony, as do her outstanding authoring and editing skills. She has co-authored several notable books (with Eleanor F. Price) on basic care and training for horses, and co-edited (with Linda Hasselstrom and Nancy Curtis) the popular Leaning Into the Wind, Woven on the Wind, and Crazy Woman Creek--anthologies recording for posterity what "the Western way of life" really amounted to for the women who lived it. Collier's own experiences, her living that Western way of life, albeit a half-century and more later, are heartwarming! (And they made Mama happy!)
A sparkling memoir ~like the Big Laramie River herself
Nevermind the uncanny similarities between mine and my husband's "back to the land" experiment in a small family cabin with no indoor plumbing, but we didn't have four children, and this is where all bets are off.

The philosopher, orator and writer Lucian of Samosata (120-180 AD) is one of the most enigmatic figures of antiquity. Considered by many to be the true inventor of science fiction, his imagination has made the protagonist of his own life. This is not a biography. This is the only real, possible autobiography (written by another, of course) of the person whose identity is dissolved in the imagination, the only antidote to the oblivion of forgetfulness.

  • Touching the World of Angels Audiobook by Seth Clyman

Title: Touching the World of Angels
Subtitle: How My Daughter's Short Life Changed Mine
    Author: Seth Clyman
    Narrator: Rob Roy
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 36 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-10-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Grief-stricken father Seth Clyman spent seven days mourning the loss of his two-month-old daughter - the seven days of shivah in the Jewish religion - questioning the meaning of life as he tried to come to terms with his infant daughter's death. As friends and family came to pay their respects, Seth felt as though he was falling into a black hole - weakened, humbled, and exposed, he spent those seven days examining a world he never knew existed. But when Seth emerged on the last day, something had shifted. He was a different person, a man who had the profound realization that death is actually the way one looks at life - death is not just an end, but also a beginning. Weaving together thought-provoking parables, anecdotes from the author's past, and poignant Judaic teachings, Touching the World of Angels is a moving, raw story of one man's spiritual journey to make sense of his loss and to find the courage to gain a richer understanding of the world beyond this one.
    Editorial Reviews:
For a parent, there is nothing more devastating than losing your child. Seth Clyman's daughter was barely two months old when she was taken from him. In this heartbreaking yet inspirational memoir, Clyman recounts his journey from sitting shiva and being in the darkest pit of despair to his reemergence toward a state of understanding. Performed with a warm and compassionate voice by veteran narrator Rob Roy, Touching the World of Angels combines Judaic teachings and personal anecdotes to form a poignant look at how one can deal with a great tragedy.

A most powerful and inspiring book
In May 2000, the Clay Mathematics Institute (CMI) named seven mathematical problems, known as the Millennium Prize Problems, all of which focused on important classic mathematical questions that have resisted solution over the years. CMI designated a $7 million prize fund for the solution to these problems, with $1 million allocated to each. Nearly eight years later, only one of the problems has been solved.
In Touching the World of Angels, Seth Clyman tackles a question harder than any Millennium Prize Problem, why do babies die? In truth, Clyman does not look for an explanation to the reason, or why his baby daughter died. He is humble to admit to the obvious impenetrable nature of such a question. Rather the book is his way of making sense of his loss, and a way to comfort others. In the book, Clyman succeeds at both.
Touching the World of Angels is a book that is both raw and inspiring. In 16 short chapters, you enter the abyss that Clyman found himself in during the week after his daughter's death. Reading through the chapters, one can almost feel the pain and anguish. And that pain that the parents felt is unfathomable, yet they somehow came out of it stronger and inspired.
Touching the World of Angels; How My Daughter's Short Life Changed Mine is a book that gives solace to those in pain and inspiration to every reader.
The book offers no answers as to why, since there are none. All it can do is attempt to make sense of it all, to put it into a context that makes gives meaning to the unknowable. And as such, Touching the World of Angels is a book that should be read by all.
    A Man's World View
Opening this book may take some courage because entering it brings you into the inner world of a father's pain.

Stick with what you like, Will. Stick with what you like!
This was a - well, I don't really know what to call it - story. The first thing I started to say was "quirky," but then I thought "fun," and then I thought maybe I should just say, "good" story. In fact, it was all of the above, and you will have to read it to see why.
Truth be told, this is one of Will's little gems. I found myself wanting to visit Gadsden, taking the same tour, and being fortunate enough to find the same storyteller! But what would be the odds of that happening?
When I first started reading this story, I was reading parts of it to my husband, and I read to him what Will was going to do for "entertainment" saying, "They really ARE hard up for entertainment there!"
We had almost moved to that area once, and we had made numerous trips there, but we had never been to Gadsden. At the beginning of the story, I was happy about that. Now I am sad about it. Not only that: I seriously want to take that tour and see this performance!
THAT is the mark of a job well done! I want to experience firsthand what I have read in these few pages. Having the words crawling around inside my brain was not enough: I want to crawl around inside the words and actually LIVE them!
Way to go, Will! You can do that again and again! It will NEVER get old!
    Not my cup of tea
I must say I found this book a bit of a disappointment. Probably due to its brevity, and the lack of punch-line. It's a factual retelling, and in itself was obviously an interesting experience for the author, but I'm afraid he got the most out of it. The great pleasure he got is just not translated to the reader. I don't wish to be harsh, but I wouldn't recommend this book.
    Heart warming!
Short and sweet. While written on a very basic level, "My American Dessert" is charming. I have always been curious about the unknown persons memorialized on gravestones and their lives but never in such a personal way. The only distraction is the occasional misspelling of the word "dessert".

A MUST READ for any fan of Radio, and I'm in the Book!
OK, first a confession. I'm using my wife's amazon account, LOL! My name is Steve Garland. I heard I was in this book, as I worked for the author at KCBS-FM in San Francisco back in the 80s, so I HAD to read it, right? Sean gets the credit (or blame) for giving me my first big break in radio, that began a lifelong career for me. BUT I had no idea who the man was behind the guy who hired me- UNTIL NOW. And I have to say, OH MY GOD! For someone who is not an author (until now), I set the bar fairly low when I grabbed the book, hoping for the best. However, I was amazed to discover I could not put down this book- it is better than many rock star bios I have read over the years, and a terrific read! it has everything you imagine the great days of 60s, 70s, and 80s radio had- Sex, drugs, and Rock n Roll. But it also is a well written personal story, that never bogs down in personal details-instead, his short, anecdotal memories allow you to get to know him, like him, and become the "Fly on the Wall" through his adventures in Radio, and wild personal life.
By the time the chapters rolled around to the years I worked with Sean, I was almost dissapointed the drinking and partying of the 70s was ending! I was the 7-12midnight DJ on the air at Sean's station- KCBS-FM, and host of the Beatles hour at the time. The reason for my inclusion- I was the jock on the air at KCBS FM the night John Lennon was killed. A moving and unforgettable time for us all, Sean does a good job of telling the story. Really, I'm a small anecdote, but proud to be a part of Seans Book and his career. I Highly recommend you read the book, a page turner from cover to cover.
I have given the author a long lost aircheck from KCBS FM from that time, and he is posting it on his website, along with other airchecks that will help bring this book to life with sound. -Thanks for telling us how crazy outta control you were Sean, how you lived through it, to tell the story I'll never know-but I'm thankful you did!

    A great read!
Kickin' Out the JamsJust when you think you know someone, he up and writes a book! I knew Sean Conrad when he was our program director at what used to be called "Boss Radio 93/KHJ". It was a critical time in the life of a top-rated Los Angeles radio station. What Sean has written is not just a story about that station. It's about the life and times of a radio insider as only he can tell it. Whether you are a fan of radio in the 70s or not, Sean has quite a story to tell. Actually, quite a lot of stories! This is a must-read for everyone who was there, and for everyone who missed it.

Length: 8 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-28-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Melissa Seligman is something rare in the world of military families - a military wife who is also a beautiful writer. Here she describes her feelings as she watches her husband walk away from her and her newborn, knowing full well that he might not return from the war in Iraq. She experiences saying goodbye twice - both times he left when their children were still infants. While hes away from home again, Melissa struggles to remember the goodness of her husband and the joy of their life together. Working hard to raise a baby and a four-year old, Melissa tells of the heartbreak and desperation she experiences at home. She watches her daughter clutch a G.I. Joe doll shes named "Little Daddy", and wonders if the family will make it through.
Hers is a story of sadness and strength, desperation and hope, displacement and unity. Its a story that anyone left behind (and we have all been left behind) will respond to, one that, unfortunately, is becoming more and more common as the war in Iraq continues. This is a work of timely and powerful nonfiction by a significant new author.
    Editorial Reviews:
In The Day After He Left for Iraq, Melissa Seligman documents a painful moment in the life of military families: when a husband leaves his wife and children to go to war. Suzie Venable's tear-jerking, emotional performance beautifully describes the soul-crushing day Seligman's husband was deployed, and the struggles this brave wife endured to raise her new baby and four-year-old alone, accompanied only by the fear her husband may never return. A tale of strength through adversity, The Day After He Left for Iraq serves as an inspiration for every American who loves their country, and their family, too.

    Great Book
Very Emotional - Great Book - she had me in tears in the first chapter and it would happen several more times. Her writing style makes you feel as if you were having a kitchen convo over a cup of tea. There were times I wanted to hug her and wipe her tears and times I wanted to tell David - where did you come from - you're such a good guy! I wanted to hug him too when he came home and struggled and I wanted to tell them its going to be ok, isn't it?
The sign of a good book - you feel like your best friend just moved across the world and you wont be able to talk to them again - because you finished the book. I wish Melissa and David and their sweet little ones the very best in life. They have gotten through the worst - life should be pretty good from now on!
    Like looking in a mirror
What an incredible book. My husband is currently deployed for the second time in two years. The first time he left when my daughter was two and a half weeks old and this time, a few days after her second birthday, so reading the author's deployment situations (minus the second child) was almost eerie.
Keep in mind that while I am an avid bookworm, I'm not someone who cries much during books or movies. It's a very rare occurrence for me. But in the first twenty pages of this book, I cried five separate times. The author put so many of the feelings running through my mind into words that reading them on the page was both heart-wrenching and validating.
My husband is my best friend and deployments are overwhelming for us. My daughter cries for her Daddy too and it compounds the sadness I already feel. That part is much harder than last time.

His hand gripped my bicycle seat as he ran alongside me that warm summer day. Even though he was young and strong, he was breathing heavily, keeping me upright while we made our way down the street.
"Don't let go me go, Daddy," I said as I concentrated on steadying myself.
"I won't let go of you, honey; not until you can do it on your own."
My father spoke in short breaths as his feet kept the same pace on the ground as my feet on the bike pedals. I was scared, but with my father by my side I felt safe and protected, and I knew that one day I would do this on my own. With my father by my side, I knew that he always would be there to pick me up, hold me upright, and make everything okay.
I want to share my Dad, Joe Romano, with you and what a wonderful father he was-such a character! For a life so large, no words will ever be enough, but I dedicate to him on this March 14th - his birthday - these memories and all my love.
And I wish you too, dear listener, inner peace and a life filled with love.

    A heartfelt, inspiring account
I've had the pleasure of working with MaryJo the writer -- a writer whose dedication and passion is rare to find where I live in Los Angeles. Now, with "Visions of My Father" I've had the chance to get to know MaryJo the woman a bit better, and it's clear that every bit of wisdom, care and thoughtfulness she remembers in her father is reflected in MaryJo's personality and in her work.
The subject of this story is gripping -- a man so memorable, so ahead of his time, so positive, and with such an incredible way of looking at things from a different yet profound angle -- and it's hard to put this book down. It fills the reader with a sense of optimism and helps one remember their own loved ones now dearly departed in a similarly positive light, all the while harnessing that feeling of nostalgia that makes our hearts sing and ache at the same time. I highly recommend this book!
    Very touching account
Visions of My Father is a very personal and touching account of the relationship between a father and his daughter, and a man and his family. Told from the perspective of the middle daughter, MaryJo Romano recounts vision after vision of humorous, heartfelt and touching stories throughout her life which involved her father. He, in and of himself, is quite a character, and if you didn't know him before reading (or listening to the audio version) of this book, you certainly will when you are through.
MaryJo tells the stories with much detail and emotion that you will feel like you know the family!
    bittersweet memories, vivid visions
I found myself thinking of my own deceased father while reading Mary Jo's account of her experience during the last hours of her father's life. Not that the experiences were similar, only that we've each lost a beloved parent. I enjoyed Mary Jo's gift of describing her visions. Because Mary Jo's descriptions "visions" seemed so candid and sincere, I felt like she was pouring her heart out to me. This story came from the heart of the author there's no doubt about that, and that's what I think makes it so endearing. This story has the power to stay in ones mind long after reading it, that to me is a sign of a good subject and a good story teller.
