Part meditation on estrangement and acceptance, part pastoral of contemporary small town life, the plot of Red Cloud Pistachios is straight forward enough: Broke, unemployed, and emotionally unprepared for responsibility, Joe Johnson abandons his 17-year old lover and ultimately the son she would have. Though the two remain friends and sometime lovers over the years, Rory is never told the truth about his father. But time and conscience are catching up with Johnson and a traumatic event in Mexico will finally force him to confront his guilt-and the truth.
Set on a pistachio farm in southeastern Arizona, drifting for a time into Sonora, Mexico, Red Cloud Pistachios shows us the capacity of people to hope for the best in others and in themselves.

The joys of small town life
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It paints a warm, but not saccharine, portrait of small town life on the desert. The final section on Kurt Laughlin added the "real world" touch to the story. Just wondering about something: in the acknowledgements I saw the name "Mark Mummy." Then I saw a review by "Paul Babb." Is the author the same David Heslop who once lived in Banning, California? If it is, you might enjoy my new book, "The House of Three Murders." Your former English teacher, Gary George. You can reach me at [email protected]
A Journey into the Southwest
I originally obtained the sample (a little more than the first chapter) of this book and was instantly drawn in and purchased the full version. While the provided synopsis is accurate, this novel entails so much more. The author's writing style, use of setting, and characterization are absolutely superb. Having spent my entire life in the southwest (Arizona), I was very interested to see how accurately the setting would be portrayed, and while reading this story you are, without a doubt, in the heart of small-town southern Arizona. I expected the majority of the novel to focus on the son and the absent father, but the author takes the reader on an amazing journey that focuses on the lives and details of quite a few characters (to some extent, an entire small town) and depicts the transformations of these characters as a result of their interactions. Without revealing too much, this novel kept me on my toes throughout its entirety. I found myself rereading passages here and there to make sure I didn't miss a thing. I couldn't make my way through the chapters quickly enough, and absolutely LOVED this novel. I can't wait to read the next novel from David Heslop!
Realistic, engaging portrayal of intertwining lives in rural America
Heslop's portrayal of small farm town America in the sprawling Southeastern Arizona landscape, whose occupants are fully developed characters that one can immediately relate to and root for, with each discovering that life keeps happening and time keeps rolling on no matter how much you might try to stop, ignore or escape it.
Masterfully written with the perfect level of detail to paint the scene without slowing down the plot, so much so that you might get the impression that you're reading a biographical account as opposed to a novel.
You will enter Red Cloud a stranger, but end up one of the locals.
A good read!
David J. Heslop has written a wonderful novel about "ordinary people" who are anything
but ordinary! As the story unfolds, the characters come alive.
