Destructive Love

Black Venus is a novel about Charles Baudelaire and his mistress, Jeanne Duval. Charles Baudelaire was not a man of affluence, however, he yearned to be so. He desired the luxuries of life and strived for it, even at the risk of his own reputation. He spent money lavishly, gambling and womanizing, even indulging in drink and drugs. His mother and stepfather often came to his rescue when his debts got out of control and imposed a strict allowance, severely restricting him.

And then in an obscure cabaret, he met the woman who would become his obsession, an alluring Creole woman from Haiti named Jeanne Duval. He dubbed her his Black Venus. She captivated him in every way and he wanted to possess her at all costs. She inspired his poetry - graphically sexual, explicit, and descriptive. She used Charles as a means to raise her own status in life. Jeanne even made clothing purchases at elite shops and charged them to Charles' mother. Jeanne took everything she could from the relationship that was tumultuous and lasted for decades.

The novel truly takes the reader in the 19th century France, the fear of the revolution, the artists, the cafes. The poems Duval inspired were published, but due to their sexuality, were banned by the government, bankrupting his publisher and rendering Charles a very poor man indeed. Edward Manet befriends Charles and soon Manet paints Jeanne. Unlike Charles, however, his work brought Manet fame and wealth, and increased Duval's fame.

Black Venus is a poignant novel, heart-breaking and forlorn, almost a tragedy. It is a tale of betrayal, jealousy, obsession, and forbidden love. A magnetic story to say the least!

Blood and Guts and the Grit of Survival

RSD's 'Homeless Dog' is no 'Lonesome Dove'. Believe me, that's a good thing. Reading this I often had the feeling that it reminded me of Bukowski in terms of the subject matter and the down and out outlook on the blunt end of life. But at the same time it had it's own feel, at times of being even more down and out, with a weary numbness to life. For those of us who find something to admire in such people for going on regardless of the difficulties in life, this is impressive stuff. Part of the grit in the style is also a bit like Hemingway, insofar as a lot of dialogue is direct, straight and to the point, stripped down. To conclude, a very good read and money very well spent!

Romantic Post-Apocalyptic Tale

Great premise on this story: the government needs to deal with overpopulation. It is thought by scientists that a population levels out on its own, but what humanity didn't? What if the spike continued and kept rising? This book definitely evokes the fear such a scenario, and from the start, one gets the idea of a romance, as the two main characters "explore each others bodies." All in all, without revealing more in the blurb that author has already, I would suggest this book if you're a fan of post-apocalyptic tales. There is a sequel as well.

The prose. Every line overflowing with comedic wit, full of throwaway one-liners.

Definitely the protagonist Drew Ballard. Though, Barron Vaughn is a close 2nd.

Not only a great book, but also a great audiobook. The musical interludes are just one example of the benefits to listening to the audiobook version. A lot of writers have mastered the written word, while severely lacking in the spoken word. Their live readings put listeners to sleep and suck the life out of their stories. Fortunately, Highland's narration has the opposite effect. A great listen.

Major Inversons is written and narrated into audiobook format by Gordon Highland. The Author suggests one: "reads the synopsis first... as the book is Hilarious and Prophane."

Profound is more accurate. The book starts out at a fast pace, due to my belief that the author was high on adderal at the time of this books writing. The further you listen to the semi coherent monologue the slower and more sober the story gets.

I am not saying slow as in boring but the pace of the reading slowes down and life is seen through less hazy eyes. The tone is truly that of a new millennium slacker ( A Term of Endearment). The daytime security guard, $15,000, a musician in a band - that plays whatever the client is willing to pay for, local Jingle writer, and drug redistributor, writes his narcissistic story of a life not liven but survived,

When a new roommate/dungeon master comments that Drew doesn't date much and suggests a hook up, with a girl said roommate knows. The addition of a regular XX chromosome into Drews life changes everything as Her father gets Drew a gig scoring a movie and Drew inturn uses his own band for some of the music.

So many connections, twists and turns, and all done at the speed of light.

Charming novel

Country Loving by Cathy Woodman is the second of her novels that I have read and loved and I so adore the book covers. Cathyâs novels take place in the quaint town of Talyton St. George and are full of delightful characters. I find that part of the joy of reading another novel that takes place in the same town is the pleasure of once again meeting some of my favorite characters.

Stevie has a successful career as an accountant, a great place to live, and a boyfriend wanting to marry her. All seems well until she receives a call from Cecil who works on her fatherâs farm. He tells her that her father isnât doing well health-wise (which she hadnât known about) and on top of that he may be arrested and thrown in jail. There is no love lost between Stevie and her father since he picked her brother over her to run the farm but she still feels the pull of responsibility and decides to head back home to the farm to see if she can get things straightened out for her father.

Stevie is shocked by the state of things on the farm not to mention the state of her father when she arrives and it isnât long before sheâs determined to set it all right again â like it was when she was young. Stevie realizes a lot more in her first weeks on the farm and that is that she doesnât want to leave and she doesnât want to get married. After the dust settles Stevie gets started on trying to make the farm profitable again and in doing so she gets tied up in all kinds of folly with the animals, meets an awesome guy, and gets the ultimate surprise of her life along the way.

I just love the town of Talyton St. George. As a matter of a fact I myself would love to live there. I adore the people living there like the meddling Fifi and Guy and Jennie and it was fun visiting them again. Stevie was a great character as well although at times she drove me crazy. Still she grew as a person over the course of time and it was nice to see. I really enjoy Cathyâs books and intend on reading all of them as I get time. They are light, easy reading that I find comfort in. Iâd definitely recommend them to those who enjoy the charm of small town stories!

Another great book by Cathy Woodman

I love the village that the author has created and the characters she has peopled it with. You can just imagine living there. I can't wait for her next book each time I read one to see who the new characters are and catch up on some of the old ones.

The book was so good I didnt want it to end.
