Title: The Killing of Tupac Shakur
    Author: Cathy Scott

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-22-16
    Publisher: Crime, She Writes
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 14 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
Cathy Scott's biography remains the seminal account of iconic rapper Tupac Shakur's life and legacy following his still-unsolved murder in Las Vegas.
It's been almost 20 years since poet, revolutionary, convict, and movie star, Tupac Amaru Shakur was gunned down at age 25 while he sat in traffic with Suge Knight near the Las Vegas Strip following a Mike Tyson fight at the MGM Grand. In the new updated and expanded third edition of this acclaimed biography, Las Vegas crime writer Cathy Scott has finally been able to include the previously unpublished chapter featuring the account of that last fateful night from "Big Frank," the rapper's now-deceased personal bodyguard.
The raw no-holds-barred narrative is the definitive account of the unsolved murder of Tupac Shakur: the many possible motives, the failed investigation, the rap wars, the killing of Biggie Smalls, the Bloods-Crips connection, the Suge Knight and Death Row Records association, and the subsequent fate of numerous principals involved in the aftermath. It is also a sensitive, candid, and insightful account of the contradictory icon who remains not only one of the most influential rappers ever but, with more than 75 million records sold worldwide, he's also one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

    My first audio book.
This was a great book not only for the fact that it was my first. But also the detail into Tupac's tragic end in life. It not only helps you understand but it gives you a different perspective and opens your eyes to a world of possibilities and in the same page it closes many more. RIP Tupac Amaru Shakur.
    Thug Lit
Investigative gangster sort of biography there aren't a lot of good books about Pac. Damn

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 12 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
Immortalized as Dean Moriarty by Jack Kerouac in his epic novel, On the Road, Neal Cassady was infamous for his unstoppable energy and his overwhelming charm, his savvy hustle and his devil-may-care attitude. A treasured friend and traveling companion of Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and Ken Kesey, to name just some of his cohorts on the beatnik path, Cassady lived life to the fullest, ready for inspiration at any turn.
Before he died in Mexico in 1968, just four days shy of his 42nd birthday, Cassady had written the jacket blurb for this book: "Seldom has there been a story of a man so balled up. No doubt many readers will not believe the veracity of the author, but I assure these doubting Thomases that every incident, as such, is true."
As Ferlingetti writes in his editor's note, Cassady was "an early prototype of the urban cowboy who a hundred years ago might have been an outlaw on the range." Here are his autobiographical writings, the rambling American saga of a truly free individual.

Where would we be without Neal Cassady?
Where would we be without Neal Cassady? There would be no "On the Road, "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Electric Kool Aid Acid Test, or "Fear and Loathing."
There had never been a muse like Cassady in American literature, never. This is his story. This is his family.
TIP: Start on Audio Chapter #3, the first two chapters are others talking about the book. I like to start right with *his* voice.
Neal Cassady's legendary charisma comes through in every line. This is his only published book. Its a story of depression era squalor that will stick in the craw of every person shouting "Make America great again," Cassady spins a tale for the ages. If you haven't heard this, your Beat education is incomplete.
By family background, Neal was an Okie before his wild days in Denver, San Francisco, or working the California rails. Luke Daniels' narration captures his Western voice spot-on.

    Publisher's Summary:
An evocative memoir. A beautiful journey to half a century and half a world away. An ageless love story.
Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent Paul Brinkley-Rogers has lived an adventurous life all over the world. But there is one story he cannot forget: that of his haunting love affair with a mysterious older Japanese woman in 1959. Paul was a sailor aboard the USS Shangri La that long-ago summer when he met Kaji Yukiko in the seaport of Yokosuka. A fierce intellectual, Yukiko shared her astonishing knowledge of literature, film, and poetry with Paul and encouraged, even demanded that he use his gifts to become the writer he is today.
But theirs was not a quiet love story. When a member of the yakuza, Japan's brutal crime syndicate, attempted to kidnap Yukiko, Paul realized that there was much more to her - and to Japan in the devastating wake of World War II - than he saw at first glance. Through the searing letters that Yukiko wrote to him and Paul's vivid telling of a history made all the more powerful and poignant by the weight of time, Please Enjoy Your Happiness reaches across decades and continents, inviting us all to revisit those loves of our lives that never do end.

Not the way I want to remember past Happy events
I found it a bit dull and slow moving at times. The story is interesting, and aparently made a huge mark on young man, which he carried through
his life. Apparently he married and had two sons, each of which he mentioned just once! Never a word about his wife, or
how this moving Japanese encounter influenced his subsequent family life. Apparently he could not tuck it away as a beautiful 'growing up' experience. I was disappointed.
    Lovely book......
If you want to read an absolutely beautiful, but sad story, this is for you. I have not read a book like this ever. So loving, so tender....when you meet the love of your life, never let them go. I was to marry the love of my life, but he died before we married. Like the author, I carry his memory forever. Love never ends....
    Unique and Unforgettable Achievement
I agree with the first reviewer. As I read the book I saw it as a movie in my mind complete with soundtrack from lyrics used in the book. The story is achingly beautiful. I was entranced. An older man sits alone in his library and opens a book of poetry to find within letters from a long lost love. He begins to realize that she was a pivotal influence in his personal as well as professional career as a Pulitzer prizewinning journalist. The letters, for me, revealed an unforgettable woman in Yukiko. Her self-effacing Asian femininity subtly and gradually revealed a depth of wisdom, courage and strength. Such qualities are not often acknowledged by Westerners. At least for me, it was a revelation and provoked an admiration for the character and the culture from which she sprang. The book is dedicated by the author to "Those Japanese women from all walks of life who with grace, warmth, and kindness helped Japan rise to new greatness after the disaster of World War II." A tribute that is probably long overdue. In addition, the story chronicles life aboard a US Navy aircraft carrier that visited Yokosuka in the summer of 1959.

    Members Reviews:
    Amazing
Sheffield has the words to describe the feeling you get when you listen to music. On Bowie is indeed a love letter to an iconic artist.
I loved Bowie since I first heard him on the radio, on cassettes, and watched him in labyrinth. There was something about him that made you take notice and feel like something important was happening. Rob Sheffield took that feeling and wove it beautifully with a history of Bowie's life and even managed to highlight Bowie's most prominent collaborators as well as his own experiences.
It was as heartfelt as his other books, yet stands on its own as part of the epic story of David Bowie. This book helped me feel a little less alone in a world without Bowie.
    Loving And Lovely
On Bowie is, just as the author mentions, a love letter... One of those that makes us cry tears of joy, of sadness, and of the love that remains for that, which we have apparently lost...
This is how it made me feel.
Then, I remembered and relived moments that went from my childhood and seemed to stop today, but, that just as Bowie, through his music and his whole Bowieness will continue to live forever in many different ways.
As a forever Bowie fan and follower, I am deeply grateful for this love letter. I have already read it twice and will soon embark on the third time, because it is not only David Bowie who is portrayed here, but rather, a little bit of each of us who grew with him and got courageous to be who and what we are today.
Thank you, Rob Sheffield for your brilliant and heartfelt account of his life.
    We can we heroes
Loved this book! All the in depth references. It's a must read for all 70's and 80's kids who felt lost until BOWIE!
Just what I needed to help me cling to the memories
The fact the he went to Yale and writes for Rolling Stone makes me feel better that I am not as crazy as I may think, in my like of this book. I loved this book, because he loves Bowie. It's an endearing story of a person who is able to help us understand through his experience while the world won't be the same without David.
    Short Theory on Starman
Wonderfully narrated leaving me wanting for more, more. Perhaps because I still grieve and consume everything I can DB, I was hoping this book could fill some of the void that his passing created, but of course it can't.

A powerful chronicle of the 16 weeks leading up to King of Pop Michael Jackson's death

Before You Judge Me is a humanizing look at Jackson's last days.

Continued to be impressed by Tavis Smiley's writing. Loved 'Death of a King', 'My Journey with Maya', and loved this one as well.
    Facing Our Demons...
The title is so very appropriate and Tavis has done another superb job in grappling with the complexities of another icons last days leading up to their death. I felt MJs pain and was forced to reflect on my own demons that drive me and so many of us. They force us to wear so many different mAsks that don't just take on the shape of drugs but sex work abuse
Etc. Well worth the read.... and I love the ending....
    Eye opening Insight
I enjoyed this audio book which exposed me to things about Michael that I did not know. I have a much better understanding of his personality and challenges.
Excellent!!! Michael Jackson fans must get this!!

I have gained a much deeper understanding of who he was and what he went through........a man who was more beautiful, talented, caring, and stronger than I ever imagined.
    This was a wonderful book.
It succeeded in its mission to reconnect us to Michael. Even here in 2017 I still teared up in hearing of his passing. Thank you for giving us some background of the greatest artist of all time

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
The unforgettable true story of two married journalists on an island-hopping run for their lives across the Pacific after the fall of Manila during World War II - a saga of love, adventure, and danger.
On New Year's Eve, 1941, just three weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese were bombing the Philippine capital of Manila, where journalists Mel and Annalee Jacoby had married just a month earlier. The couple had worked in China as members of a tight community of foreign correspondents with close ties to Chinese leaders; if captured by invading Japanese troops, they were certain to be executed. Racing to the docks just before midnight, they barely escaped on a freighter - the beginning of a tumultuous journey that would take them from one island outpost to another. While keeping ahead of the approaching Japanese, Mel and Annalee covered the harrowing war in the Pacific Theater - two of only a handful of valiant and dedicated journalists reporting from the region.
Supported by deep historical research, extensive interviews, and the Jacobys' personal letters, Bill Lascher recreates the Jacobys' thrilling odyssey and their love affairs with the Far East and one another. Bringing to light their compelling personal stories and their professional life together, Eve of a Hundred Midnights is a tale of an unquenchable thirst for adventure, of daring reportage at great personal risk, and of an enduring romance that blossomed in the shadow of war.
    Members Reviews:
it is a love story. Mr
This book is superb. A very well written account of an intrepid reporter, Melville Jacoby, and his equally impressive wife in the Pacific during the lead up to World War II. It operates on several levels. On the one hand, it is a very personal account of a man from a privileged background seemingly compelled to situate himself in danger zones and to report from a theater largely ignored by the American government and populace. It deals substantively with the issues prevailing in that quadrant of the world during a most explosive time. Lastly, it is a love story. Mr. Lascher had access to a treasure trove of notes, letters and photographs that make this account come alive in most vivid fashion. A page turner and highly recommended.
A riveting, unique, and incredibly relevant story about journalism in a time of war
I'm not a big history buff, and I don't actually have a lot of time to read, but I made time for this book and this bit of history. It's a meticulously researched and layered look at the Asian theater in WWII, but beyond that, it echoes the need for journalists to witness history firsthand. I relished learning about the Chinese and Filipino efforts, slices of history that I'd never heard before, but I also loved experiencing it alongside these young, brave journalists through their eyes. Really well done.
    More Than Just History
A very good read. Learned a lot about the war against the Japanese. Also, what it means to be a war correspondent.
A book that's hard to put down
This book, the story of young journalist Melville (Mel) Jacoby, touches so many things, Chinese history, WW II history, journalism, adventure, second hand memoir, and it reads like a novel. Interestingly, one of Mel's cousins said, "He [Mel] was too good to be true.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Randye Kaye?

    Publisher's Summary:
After Vanilla Ice, but before Eminem, there was "Hot Karl", the Jewish kid from the LA suburbs who became a rap battling legend - and then almost became a star.
When 12-year-old Jensen Karp got his first taste of rapping for crowds at his friend's bar mitzvah in 1991, little did he know that he was taking his first step on a crazy journey - one that would end with a failed million-dollar recording and publishing deal with Interscope Records when he was only 19. Now, in Kanye West Owes Me $300, Karp finally tells the true story of his wild ride as "Hot Karl", the most famous white rapper you've never heard of.
On his way to (almost) celebrity, Jensen shares his childhood run-ins with rock-listening Southern California classmates who tell him that "rap is for black people" and then recounts his record-breaking rap battling streak on popular radio contest The Roll Call - a run that caught the eye of a music industry hungry for new rap voices in the early '00s. He also introduces his rap partner, Rickye, who constitutes the second half of their group, XTra Large; his supportive mom, who performs with him onstage; and the soon-to-be-household-name artists he records with, including Kanye West, Redman, Fabolous, Mya, and will.i.am. Finally he reveals why his album never saw the light of day (two words: Slim Shady), the downward spiral he suffered after, and what he found instead of rap glory.
Full of rollicking stories from his close brush with fame, Karp's hilarious memoir is the ultimate fish-out-of-water story about a guy who follows an unlikely passion - trying to crack the rap game - despite what everyone else says. It's 30 Rock for the rap set, 8 Mile for the suburbs, and quite the journey for a white kid from the valley.
