The narrator did a wonderful job reading the letter and it's nice to hear Merlin tell the history of the letter. I enjoyed it. Highly recommended to all.

    Title: Aleister Crowley
    Subtitle: Man, Myth & Magick
    Author: Steven Ashe
    Narrator: Cliff Truesdell
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-06-15
    Publisher: Warburg-Maple Publishing
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 44 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
Ask almost anyone their view on Aleister Crowley and opinions will polarize: he was a genius; a psychopath; a drug-riddled sex maniac; a champion of sexual freedom against the restrictions of Victorian prudery and hypocrisy; he was a secret agent; a lost-soul poet; a playboy with little better to do than dabble in magic; a lifestyle imitator of Oscar Wilde and Richard Burton; a drug addict; a narcissistic sadist; a visionary artist.
Few commentators are qualified to critique Crowley's esoteric motivations and ambitions and most simply dismiss him as a black magician who had fallen from the path. But if he did fall, why? Exactly where did he imagine the path led in the first place? And how far did he actually succeed in his life-long mission to overthrow the established order and herald a new age of magick? Ashe thinks he knows and has written a narrative that presents a lively biography from the perspective of understanding Crowley's roots in the magic of the Order of the Golden Dawn.
Crowley was not the first of the great English magicians and certainly will not be the last. This work has been written for the general audience with a simple elegance, but has enough surprises to delight the most hackneyed Crowley expert.

Straight to the Point Biography of Crowley
Well researched, unbiased, and of course with anything pertaining to Crowley, full of strange and slightly disturbing stories about his life. Does not break new ground, but excellent for anyone who has even a passing interest in this unique man. Recommended.
    Boring
I think reading the encyclopedia would have been more entertaining. Not at all what I expected.

    Title: The Road
    Author: Jack London
    Narrator: T. Anthony Quinn
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 54 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-31-15
    Publisher: Spoken Realms
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 29 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
In The Road, Jack London embraces the concepts of unconfined individualism and Darwinism through his autobiographical account of his time riding the rails of Canada and the United States. The author of White Fang, The Call of the Wild, and Sea Wolf, relays the time leading up to turning point in his life - a perfunctory trial and a 30-day imprisonment in the Erie County Penitentiary for the crime of vagrancy - an experience so degrading that he turned to a career in writing. This tale of rugged individualism influenced Jack Kerouac and inspired his tale, On the Road. Simultaneously autobiographical and instructional, The Road wryly presents a way of life that embodies wanderlust and the soul's search for true freedom.

Desperate times call for desperate measures
If you could sum up The Road in three words, what would they be?
    Life is difficult
Who was your favorite character and why?
The author was my favorite character-although, I was definitely conflicted in my feelings for him. The historical context is SUPER interesting and his stories are FASCINATING. But he is also SUCH a liar! However, I also know that times were very tough back then, and I'm sure that it wasn't easy to survive without some compromises-so I don't feel we should judge him too harshly. It just wasn't easy for me to hear him telling one lie after another to get by!
Which character as performed by T. Anthony Quinn was your favorite?
    The author (see above)
Whats the most interesting tidbit youve picked up from this book?
I enjoyed the part where he was talking to the sailor, who started asking him detailed questions about his (fictitious) adventures on the sea. Each time you thought his lies were about to be exposed, he found a way to turn things around and regain control of the narrative. I felt anxious the entire time!
In general, the words and imagery in this book were SO vivid that I felt as if I were in the 19th century, riding the rails with him!
    Any additional comments?
I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review
    Masterful Storyteller
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this book to storytellers because London explains how hoboing helped him develop and hone his craft as a storyteller. This is an indispensable book for explaining how London got his start as a storyteller.
What other book might you compare The Road to and why?
Kerouac's "On the Road," which was inspired by London's "The Road." Kerouac has that same wanderlust, that aimlessness and defiance of authority and conventionality.
What about T. Anthony Quinns performance did you like?
He did a great and animated job capturing the accents and voices of people around the country at all stages of society one hundred and twenty-five years ago. When Quinn performs, I hear and see the characters.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
London's descriptions of homeless railroad children touched me, because I can see echoes in the runaways and street children of today.
His run-ins with the shanks and the police exhilarated me. He told stories to get himself out of a tight spot.
    Any additional comments?
London lived enough stories to last a life time. I am glad he shared many of them with us.

    Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 39 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
In her celebrated fiction, Shirley Jackson explored the darkness lurking beneath the surface of small-town America. But in Life Among the Savages, she takes on the lighter side of small-town life. In this witty and warm memoir of her family's life in rural Vermont, she delightfully exposes a domestic side in cheerful contrast to her quietly terrifying fiction. With a novelist's gift for character, an unfailing maternal instinct, and her signature humor, Jackson turns everyday family experiences into brilliant adventures.
    Critic Reviews:
"At a moment when helicopter parenting is the norm, 'free-range' parents are chastised for letting their children wander a few blocks alone, and the pressure feels greater than ever not only to 'have it all' but to 'be it all' - to manage both to pursue a successful career and to produce homemade cupcakes for every birthday - Jacksons relaxed approach to child-rearing feels refreshingly sane. Children, she tells us, are essentially savages and demons, and ought to be treated as such: at a cautious distance, without losing sight of ones own way of life." (
    The New York Times)

    Stories From A Quirky Family
These eccentric stories of family life during the 1940's are centered in an old rambling house in very rural Vermont. This semi autobiographical collection of scattered memories loosely organized is funny, unusual and engaging. Jackson gives her children the freedom to express themselves and explore life in a very different world from the one in which we now live. I found a thread of subtle fear and spookiness running just under the surface of many of these stories. A hint I guess of the other, darker writing that Jackson is best known for. In the end this was an enjoyable look back in time.
Before Erma Bombeck There Was Shirley Jackson
Known primarily for her chilling short story, "The Lottery" and her novel The Haunting of Hill House, Shirley Jackson wrote a lot of other things. I think it's safe to say that she pioneered the satirical housewife memoir genre of literature. This is a humorous and yet compelling book about the ups and downs of being a housewife (while she was still working a s a writer) and the bitter-sweet transformation of children into adulthood. I loved this book and highly recommend it for someone who wants something funny and yet touching. Although a series of anecdotes, the book reads likes a novel and is linear--unlike more contemporary writers like David Sedaris--and I liked that a great deal about it. If you're looking for creepy, ironic stories, this isn't one of those--but this is excellent light reading fair for someone who wants to relax and listen to a good book. I am a Bombeck fan, and I think it's safe to say that if you are a Bombeck fan as well you can't go wrong with this book--although I don't know if Bombeck had read this book--it seems as if it was influential.
1950s domestic comedy is NOT Father Knows Best
Before Jenny Lawson (aka The Bloggess) and the internet and the plague of mommy bloggers (no offense--most of them are wonderful), Shirley Jackson wrote about her family for various women's magazines, which actually paid money.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 98 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
A brilliant, life-affirming, and hilarious memoir from a "genius" (The New York Times) and master storyteller.
The seven years between the birth of Etgar Keret's son and the death of his father were good years, though still full of reasons to worry. Lev is born in the midst of a terrorist attack. Etgar's father gets cancer. The threat of constant war looms over their home and permeates daily life.
What emerges from this dark reality is a series of sublimely absurd ruminations on everything from Etgar's three-year-old son's impending military service to the terrorist mind-set behind Angry Birds. There's Lev's insistence that he is a cat, releasing him from any human responsibilities or rules. Etgar's siblings, all very different people who have chosen radically divergent paths in life, come together after his father's shivah to experience the grief and love that tie a family together forever.
This wise, witty memoir - Etgar's first nonfiction book published in America, and told in his inimitable style - is full of wonder and life and love, poignant insights, and irrepressible humor.

Distinctive Stories, Kind of 'Meh' Narration
The Seven Good Years is a loose collection of anecdotes and observations from Israeli writer Etgar Keret's life, starting with the birth of his son and progressing through the next seven years. Parts of it were very irreverent and funny! I haven't read a lot of work by modern Israeli writers, and Keret's voice seemed pretty distinctive to me very wry and sardonic. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict loomed large, as well as the recent past of Keret's parents fleeing Poland during the Holocaust, and these things lent a certain nihilistic comic relief to situations like what to do when you're being cornered by a cable telemarketer.
This collection is super short, yet I didn't think it made for a great listen. The format of loose observations made it hard to latch onto a narrative thread while listening. And then there's Alex Karpovsky, who narrates I like him as an actor, but as a narrator he was honestly kind of meh. I did enjoy it, but I'm not sure it will stand out at the end of the year when I look back on what I've listened to.
    Amazing Stories
I laughed and cried and worries and was relieved. So funny and so sad at the same time.

Georgette Heyer remains an enduring international best seller, read and loved by four generations of readers and extolled by today's best-selling authors. Despite her enormous popularity, she never gave an interview or appeared in public.
Georgette Heyer wrote her first novel, The Black Moth, when she was 17 in order to amuse her convalescent brother. It was published in 1921 to instant success, and 90 years later it has never been out of print. A phenomenon even in her own lifetime, to this day she is the undisputed queen of regency romance.
During 10 years of research into Georgette Heyer's life and writing, Jennifer Kloester has had unlimited access to Heyer's notebooks and private papers and the Heyer family records and exclusive access to several untapped archives of Heyer's early letters. Engaging, authoritative and meticulously researched, Georgette Heyer: Biography of a Bestseller offers a comprehensive insight into the life and writing of a remarkable and ferociously private woman.

    Heyer as a person
Jennifer Kloester spent many years researching the life an works of Georgette Heyer, perhaps best known as the inventor of the Regency Romance. This biography allows the interested listener to learn more about Heyer as a person, and what was going on in her life as she wrote her beloved books. And Phyllida Nash was an excellent choice for narrator. She has narrated several of Heyer's novels and shows and interest and understanding of the genre. She also has a very pleasant voice. I am delighted to be able to listen to this biography.
Currently Audible has almost all of Heyer's novels available as audiobooks, which is also a delight. Having this biography available fills out the set. I hope that one day Audible will be able to add audiobooks for Pistols for Two, Heyer's short story collection and the rare Heyer novels not currently available.
    Exceptional historical novelist's life story
Enjoyed the close up view of Georgette Heyer's struggles as a writer. Great insight and detail of this renouned author's approach to life and dealing wth publishers agents and the vagaries of a writer's world. I've never read any if her books but am inspired to make sure my next Audio book is one of hers. Excellent listening.

    Publisher's Summary:
"I want to be useful or bring enjoyment to all people, even those I've never met. I want to go on living even after my death! And that's why I'm so grateful to God for having given me this gift, which I can use to develop myself and to express all that's inside me!" (Anne Frank's diary entry for April 5, 1944)
Anne Frank is one of the most famous individuals of the 20th century for the worst possible reason. Joseph Stalin is often quoted as saying one death is a tragedy and a million is a statistic, and while plenty of people might argue with the sentiment expressed, there's no question that Anne Frank in many ways became the face of the Holocaust.
Among the millions of victims killed in the Holocaust, there were certainly a countless number of 15-year-old Jewish girls who lost their mothers, their sisters, and their own lives in Nazi concentration camps. While they were destined to become a footnote of history for anyone outside of their loved ones, Anne Frank has indeed gone on living after death thanks to the diary she kept during World War II and the year she and her family spent hiding from the occupying Nazi forces in Amsterdam. Given the journal as a 13th birthday present, Anne dutifully wrote in it from June 1942 to August 1944, with the last entry coming just a few days before her family was arrested. Anne and her sister, Margot, were transported to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where both young girls died of typhus just a month before the war in Europe would end.

    Needs to check facts!
I got this book as a free book about Anne Frank. As an avid reader of anything about Anne Frank, I was disappointed that the author did not check the facts. For example, it states in the beginning that Anne was in hiding for a year. In fact her family was hiding for slightly over 2 years (July 1942-Auguust 1944). These years were listed in later part of the part. Another instance is when it mentions a man handing over Anne's diary when Otto returns from Auschwitz. Again later in the book it talks about Miep Gies (a woman) returning the papers to Otto Frank. The book also introduces us to Anne as being from Weimar, Germany, when in fact she was born in Frakurt am Main in Hessen, Germany.
The book was interesting to read and it was a free book at the time of my purchase. It was put together in an interesting way. especially to those who know little about Anne Frank or the Holocaust. If the author would clean up the facts, I would give it a better rating.
NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING / NO ES LO QUE PENSÉ
This book is about Anna's Diaries, Not the diary itself as thougth it was going to be. I do not recommend it.
Este libro es sobre el Diario de Ana Frank, no el diario de ella, como pensé que sería. No lo recomiendo.
    Not bad, not good

    Language: English

    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 115 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
Charlotte Gordon's new work is a fresh look at the lives of Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley, who together comprise one of the most illustrious and inspiring mother-daughter pairs in history. Wollstonecraft published the first full articulation of women's rights in 1792, risking her reputation and sometimes her life in pursuit of her radical goals, while her daughter Mary Shelley wrote the masterpiece Frankenstein in 1819, and famously professed her love to the poet Percy Shelley on her mother's grave.
Although these two women never really knew each other, their lives were so closely intertwined and eerily similar that it seems impossible to consider one without the other: Both became writers; both fell in love with brilliant but impossible men, and were single mothers who had children out of wedlock; both struggled to negotiate their need for love and companionship with their need for independence. The narrative takes listeners from Revolutionary France to the Scottish Highlands, from Victorian England to the canals of Venice, flowing like an engrossing historical novel.

Fascinating dual biography and viewpoint on feminism...
Allows one to see how misogyny is interwoven so seamlessly into the fabric if society and culture, both then and thereby now. Also incredible to see how times and persons enjoy a higher degree of radicalism and dissent often engender a backlash that is far more conservative in the next generation. We e are not moving in a straight line and what is "forward" anyway?
Reshuffle the Deck of Chapters Please
    Any additional comments?
The history is valid, conformable and presented in a very confusing way. The author has a nutball idea that switching from the life of Mary Wollstoencraft,Godwin, and the life of her daughter Mary Godwin Shelley, is a useful literary tool. This works against the information and the story. If the chapters were reshuffled so that you could start with the life of Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin and then hear the life of Mary Godwin Shelley the book would be much clearer. Chapters for the men in key rolls in each Mary's life would improve this book to read and listen to also.If this book were properly organized I would buy it again. This confusing attempt at publishing a book with a creative twists really sad because the information is timely and valid for women today.
    Beyond Expectations
    Any additional comments?
I loved this book and I am mostly a fiction reader. It was a fascinating story and I learned so much about the period and was constantly grateful as a woman to be living right now. I have such admiration for the courage of both women and what they accomplished against great odds. Didn't want to stop listening to it.
Tons of info, poor format choice.
What did you like best about Romantic Outlaws? What did you like least?
I knew little about Mary Shelley other than that she wrote Frankenstein and was married to the poet, Shelley. I knew nothing about her mother. I am happy to now be able to say the opposite. I learned a great deal about both from this book, and find them to have been remarkable and admirable women in most respects.

A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
"A long time ago, when all the grandfathers and grandmothers of today were little boys and little girls or very small babies, or perhaps not even born, Pa and Ma and Mary and Laura and Baby Carrie left their little house in the Big Woods of Wisconsin."
So begins the first of a series of primarily autobiographical books for children that would give 20th century America a look at what it was like when the country was still young and the West was a largely empty, untamed wilderness. They were written by a woman who had experienced a hardscrabble frontier life, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and they were first published in the 1930s, when the United States desperately needed a reminder that "tough times don't last but tough people do." In addition to giving Americans a nostalgic glimpse of the past, the books were a reminder of the nation's unique spirit and belief that hard work can overcome any obstacle.

The long-awaited memoir by "the most prolific and popular of all contemporary composers." (New York Times)
A world-renowned composer of symphonies, operas, and film scores, Philip Glass has, almost single-handedly, crafted the dominant sound of late twentieth-century classical music. Rapturous in its ability to depict the creative process, Words without Music allows listeners to experience that sublime moment of creative fusion when life merges with art. Whether recalling his experiences working at Bethlehem Steel, traveling in India, driving a cab in 1970s New York, or his professional collaborations with the likes of Allen Ginsberg, Ravi Shankar, Robert Wilson, Doris Lessing, and Martin Scorsese, Words without Music affirms the power of music to change the world.

Treat Yourself, Accompany Audiobook with Music
Excellent memoir, how much greater would it have been though had it incorporated his music? Worth the time, though. Enjoy.
    CREATIVE ADULT
Words without Music is a memoir of Philip Glasss transformation to creative adult. This is a journey taken by every childwith greater and lesser degrees of actualized creativity. Glass explains how love by others transforms his life and why self-actualization is the fountain of creativity. This is certainly not a new revelation. Socrates, through the words of Plato, characterizes self-actualization with the dictum of know thy self. Self-actualization is explained as the penultimate goal of life by Abraham Maslow.
Glasss journey is symbolized by his dissection of the works of Jean Cocteau; i.e. particularly La_Belle_et_la_Bête (Beauty and the Beast). Glass argues that Cocteaus works are about human creativity and transformation. The symbolism in La_Belle_et_la_Bête is the story of Glasss life. The rose in Cocteaus movie symbolizes beauty (Glasss body of work). The key is the method (Glasss mother). The horse is strength, determination, and speed (Glasss father). The glove is nobility (Glasss renown as a composer). The castle is a prison that can only be escaped with love from another (Glasss three wives, his children, his mentors, and friends). The Mirror symbolizes who you truly are (this memoir of Glasss life).
This is a nicely written and narrated memoir of Philip Glass; considered by many as the most influential composer of the late twentieth century.
    LOVED!
I am a musician and this memoir is something I'll carry with me for years to come. It's a must read for anyone, but especially for creatives. A sort of "The Alchemist" meets 20th/21st century composer.

This was a truly compelling listen. Not just an autobiography of the composer but a real sense of time, place and mood. It presents a really vivid account of a social and cultural melting pot at a time of great change in the arts in general.
