The fascinating story of a real life troubadour

A fascinating tale of one of America's great musicians. This in-depth study of a rare breed, a real troubadour who has traversed the country and the world time and time again and will do so until he dies with a guitar in his hands enthralled me from beginning to end. Not only was Dylan the musician singer and songwriter given a detailed study, but also light was cast into the dark recesses of the very private life of a very public figure. Bob Dylan the musician we have known through his music. Bob Zimmerman the man is also revealed here. Wonderfully written in concise detail and beautifully read.

I'm a little late to the party

I've been an avid music fan since childhood, and always prided myself on the rich diversity that is my record collection.

Somehow, I've overlooked much of Dylan's catalogue.

This was a very informative book on Dylan's personality, and gives a good perspective on the forces that have shaped and influenced him over the years.

There are plenty if surprises, (at least for me).

Terrific thorough biography

Had read it years ago and has been updated through 2012 or so. Thorough, well-researched and even-handed, it does a good job telling the remarkable story of Dylan's life. The reader is very good as well. Excellent book well told.

Fact Filled Dylan Bio

This was a fairly good Dylan bio. It was interesting hearing it read with a British accent and hearing the narrator try and imitate a variety of different American voices such as Dylan, and Johnny Cash.

Very fact Filled and to the point. Would have liked to have had more details about the later years of the artist's career as the author seemed like he wanted to simply wrap up the book by the end.

Informative, hear more in depth about Dylan

If you love audiobooks and are a Bob Dylan fan this is the audiobook you cannot miss. I know there are a few books about Dylan out there. This one really tells about his experiences through life. Big moments, relationships, albums, and how the man has lived his life. Even if you are not a huge Bob Dylan fan this book is great just to hear about the experiences of legendary musician decade after decade.

Narration very disappointing.

What did you like best about C.S. Lewis? What did you like least?

The story of C.S. Lewis is fascinating. I love his stories and liked hearing about how he created them as well as how he came to faith in Christ. However. The narration is so poor I almost turned it off during the introduction. It is hard to comprehend the meaning of sentences due to the reader's lack of appropriate inflections. I am sure the story would have been riveting with a better reader. Sorry.

I love audible books but I would return this one if I could.

I could not enjoy the nasally narrator. The subject matter of the book was good enough to grit my teeth and tolerate the narration.

Mr. Glass has an annoying, nasal quality to his voice and he reads too rapidly for comfortable listening.

Loved His Pennings!

I first read The Screwtape Letters in Bible College and quickly fell in love with C. S. Lewis. I read the Chronicles a few years later and was whisked back to the adventures I encountered at my Grandparents house in the country. I was whisked into the closet with Lucy and could see everything she described and felt as though I was traveling with her each step of the way. I felt the frustration she experienced when she tried to explain where she had been! It was one of the most exciting adventures for my children to share as well. The story evoked imagination, laughter, irritation and tears that all turned into happiness at being back safe on this side of the closet! So much to grasp about life in his stories!

Missing Chappelle

I loved The Dave Chappelle Show and was sad to see it come to and end BUT Chappelle walked away from 50 million for his principals and beliefs...Makes my respect him even more. I thought this was very insightful. Over the years we've heard so much of what happened. That, I think we'll never truly know but this book had great insight and I'm happy I listened to it.

I am a New Zealander who was living in the US around this time and I remember the news and speculation at the time, and it was really interesting to hear the background and get a better idea of what happened. I admire Dave for standing up for what he believed in, not many people would walk away from that kind of money for their principals.

Long live Chappelle!

Very interesting take on Dave Chappelle. Like most people, I watched his stand up shows and was too busy laughing to realise there is a dark side to the stories he tells. For instance the sketch about the blind racist (Clayton Bigsby) is based on racial abuse his father experienced on a bus (though he was oblivious to it).

Informative and Fun

What did you love best about The Friedkin Connection?

Long ago I read a book that was supposed to be about the business of making movies ("You'll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again"). It was a total disappointment. Friedkin's book is exactly the kind of book was looking for.

I guess the thing that surprised me aside from his apparent honesty and candor about himself, even the bad periods in his life was that he could be so passionate about his work and so could others. People absolutely hated and loathed some movies, while loving others. There were feuds that went on for decades. All the same mix of happiness and unhappiness that the rest of us get in our lives I suppose, but I didn't think it was part of the territory when it comes to being rich and famous and successful in Hollywood. I thought you would just be happy about your accomplishments. But no, there's all the usual stuff to worry about: budgets, and money, and backing and expenditures and time and investments of all kinds. Plus the work of making a movie, itself.

This book touches on all of it. I'm very glad I found it. I think you'll like it.

I loved this book and it was even better since it was narrated by Stefanie Powers...I had read the book but got more out of listening to it. You won't be disappointed.

Absolutely Wonderful!

I have been a Stefanie Powers super fan since I fell in love with Hart to Hart as a tween. I own and have read One From the Hart and when I saw that Stefanie Powers narrated the audio version I knew I had to have it as well - and I was blown away. I cried, I laughed and I have found a whole new level of respect, love and gratitude for her.

My family had always joked with me when i was a young teen how I want to be Stefanie when I grew up...I honestly can say that if I could just be a little like her I would have a life well lived.

She has always been my idol and listening to her story told by her has only solidified that even more.

I know I will be listening to this one numerous times!

Outstanding

I have been a fan since junior high school when I first saw Stefanie Powers in Hart To Hart and have loved and admired her unending work both professionally and privately with the WHWF. I found it so endearing that she narrated the audiobook as it made me feel as if she was speaking directly to me. What a classy lady!

Simply The Best

This audible rendition of Ms. Powers book was incredible! I am somewhat biased as a member of her fan club, but listening to her read her memoir in that velvety voice was such a treat. The stories about her, her family, life adventures, travels, friends and relationships, Hollywood tidbits and personal insights was made extra special to hear her voice inflections as she touched on humor and sadness in her life. I will be starting over to hear her reading of this fascinating book again tomorrow!

I always enjoyed Stewarts skills. The book helped me get to know the person. I have found few actors I enjoyed more over the years.

I really liked learning certain things about Stewart that I didn't know. This was not a whitewash, but honest with human faults.

Live fast, die young and leave a beautiful mystery

Robert Johnson recorded 59 tracks in the 1930s, of which only 42 are extant. Son House said when he first heard Johnson play he was ordinary. Very. But the young guitarist went away, came back, and his playing was so good his guitar caught on fire. Or nearly. Well, that's what you get when you sell your soul to the devil. A hot guitar and a swift end after a cup of poison, thanks to a jealous girlfriend.

There's more legend than truth in the Robert Johnson story, and even that is scant. Author Tom Graves does much with very little. He's like a detective turning over a cold case and trying to get to the root of what really happened and who was this guy anyway?

Robert Johson was one of the great country blues guitarists, singers and songwriters. But he was mostly forgotten until Columbia released a 17-track compilation in 1961. Dylan heard it. The Stones did. Clapton did. Their ears turned round their heads. This was earth-moving music.

Grave's book is not a play-by-play account of each of the 42 songs. He even saves a lot of his musical analysis for the last part. What he wants to do, and does very well, is unravel the mystery, tell us about the man and then focus on his powerful legacy.

In 1987, Claude Johnson came forward as Johnson's biological son. The guitarist had died in 1938. A lot of time had passed. The case went to court. The judge cross-examined a woman claiming to have witnessed Claude's conception. The author reproduces the court transcript, in which the judge asks his witness if she made a habit of watching people in the act. More than once, she said, and she was awful sorry the judge hadn't tried it himself.

Graves also devotes time to the photos and video that surfaced in later decades and the controversy surrounding their authenticity. He brings up the controversy over the postage stamp, too. The stamp showed a smoking bluesman. Naughty.

Crossroads is a quick listen and well worth your time if you're interested in Johnson, blues or music in general.

Hard to follow

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I just wanted a biography of Lewis, but this isn't what I was looking for and I thought was hard to follow. I never finished it.

A valuable addition to books on Lewis

Would you listen to A Life Observed again? Why?

Yes. In a meaty biography you never get everything in one reading.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the heavy emphasis on Lewis' books.

What about Jon Gaugers performance did you like?

Excellent. He was an able reader who did not distract the listener from the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I never do that.

It is a "spiritual biography" but of value to Christians and nonchristians alike. Very well done.
