    Title: Shell Shocked
Subtitle: My Life with the Turtles, Flo and Eddie, and Frank Zappa, etc.
    Author: Jeff Tamarkin, Howard Kaylan
    Narrator: Howard Kaylan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-08-13
    Publisher: Backbeat Books
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 111 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
If Howard Kaylan had sung only one song, the Turtles' 1967 No. 1 smash hit "Happy Together," his place in rock-and-roll history would still be secure. But that recording, named in 1999 by BMI as one of the top 50 songs of the 20th century, with over five million radio plays, is only the tip of a rather eye-opening iceberg. For nearly five decades, Howard Kaylan has been a player in the rock-and-roll revolution. In addition to his years with the Turtles, Kaylan was a core member of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention and the dynamic duo Flo & Eddie, and part of glam rock history with Marc Bolan and T. Rex.
He's also given street cred and harmonies to everyone from John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen and Alice Cooper to the Ramones and Duran Duran, to name just a few. Howard Kaylan's life has been a dangerous ride that he is only too happy to report on, naming names and shedding shocking tales of sex, drugs and creative excess. Shell Shocked will stand alone as not only one of the best-told music-biz memoirs, but one with a truly candid and unmatchable story of rock-and-roll insanity and success from a man who glories in it all.

    The Turtles DO Rock...Really!
I rarely give an unqualified 5 star rating...wait, I NEVER give a 5 star rating, but this audiobook rocks! Baby boomers know the Turtles as an iconic MOR pop band that ruled the pop charts in the late '60s (They knocked the Beatles out of the #1 position at one point) and then had a stereotypical breakup due to the usual: musical differences, drugs, changing public preferences, management, etc. It's all told here by Howard Kaylan (with a "Y"!) in an honest and very funny autobiography that grabs you from the first sentence and never lets up.
With a refreshing lack of ego, Mr. Kaylan dishes the whole storyline of the Turtles to the Mothers of Invention to Flo & Eddie and beyond. Be forewarned: YOU WILL LAUGH OUT LOUD so pick your listening times carefully. I often listen in bed before going to sleep but I couldn't do that with this book - I kept waking up my slumbering spouse with my chuckles and laughter. I also had to avoid many concerned looks in the Doctor's office, on public transportation, in the grocery store...you get the idea.
This production shines throughout. Mr. Kaylan provides a perfect wedding of writing and narration. Even my pet peeve about mispronunciation is absent here - a first in 13 years.
If you have the slightest interest in The Turtles, the '60s and '70s or pop music in general you will love this book.
    You CAN'T MISS this one!
    A delightful listen!
    Any additional comments?
I loved The Turtles music growing up in the late 60s, so I jumped on this audiobook as soon as I saw it and wasnt disappointed. Howards narration is like hanging out with an old friend and swapping rock and roll war stories. The stories of his interactions with rock and roll royalty are worth the price of admission alone. The stories of his personal misbehavior and of the show biz sharks that bit them are riveting. Then there are the Mothers of Invention stories, most notably his firsthand account of the concert in Montreux that was the inspiration for Deep Purples immortal Smoke On The Water. All in all a pleasant listen, that Ill probably do again in the near future.

    Format: Original Recording
Length: 6 hrs and 9 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: The Great Courses
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 33 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
There is no disputing that John Milton is considered one of the supreme writers in the history of English letters. Yet, for a number of reasons, many modern readers are unaware of the pleasures of his poetry and prose. These 12 lectures examine Milton's life and work in order to understand the richness and depth of his poetry, its ways of representing 17th-century English life and culture, and its impact on later writers and on English literary history as a whole. You'll learn about Milton's works in all their fullness, whether or not you've read them in the past. You'll get both an introduction to Milton's achievements and a means by which you can cultivate your own thoughts and opinions about works including Paradise Lost and Areopagitica. While Paradise Lost alone could easily be the subject of an entire lecture series, Professor Lerer chooses not to restrict himself to this unique masterwork, but rather to make it manifest in the context of its maker's life and career, and to give you a foundation on which to build your future enjoyment of Milton. Because of this, you'll get a chance to explore Milton's early poetry, "Lycidas," his various political works, Paradise Regained, Samson Agonistes, and more. Professor Lerer describes these lectures as "an invitation to the modern reader to find ways of enjoying, appreciating, valuing, and even struggling through a poetry that says as much about human nature and political life now as it did over three centuries ago." And in learning to feel the living pulse of Milton's world, you'll join generations of readers and authors, including William Wordsworth, T.S. Eliot, and Mary Shelley, who have taken inspiration from his genius.

Good overview of Milton and Paradise Lost
Would you listen to The Life and Writings of John Milton again? Why?
Yes after listening or reading more of Milton's works.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Life and Writings of John Milton?
    His review of Paradise Lost
    Any additional comments?
If you never had a college course on Milton or Paradise Lost then this course will help you understand both. As the title suggests this course is not limited to Paradise Lost. I now have interest in reading other works by Milton. I do wish the course was longer so it could cover more details of Milton's works.
A great overview of John Milton
When I was in school I primarily took courses in science. Now that I am retired I thought I might look into areas I neglected in my life such as poetry. I chose this Great Course on The Life and Writings of John Milton as a way to obtain a lot of concise information so I would have a good understanding of Milton. Professor Seth Lerer is a professor at Comparative Literature at Stanford.
John Milton (1608-1674) is considered one of the great writers in the history of English literature. This lecture series exams Miltons life and his poems. Lerer goes a bit into 17th century English life and culture to show its impact on Miltons writings. Milton wrote in a time of religious flux and political upheaval. Lerer points out that Milton wrote in English, Latin, Greek and Italian.

    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 32 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
Waylon Jennings. Willie Nelson. Kris Kristofferson. Three renegade musicians. Three unexpected stars. Three men who changed Nashville and country music forever.
By the late 1960s, Nashville, Tennessee, was firmly established as the center of the booming country music industry and home to what was known as the Nashville Sound, characterized by slick production and adherence to an increasingly overused formula. But the city was changing. Young people from all over the country were streaming into the bohemian West End and colliding with three trailblazing artists who would soon rock the foundations of Nashville's music business.
Surrounded by the street vibes of the West End's burgeoning underground scene and the outlaw protest tradition of Nashville's unlikely civil rights leaders and antiwar protestors, Waylon, Willie, and Kris began resisting the unspoken rules of Nashville's music-making machine and instead forged their own creative paths. Their music, personal and not easily categorized, was more in the vein of rock acts like the Allman Brothers and Bob Dylan, and it communicated a stark rawness and honesty that would influence artists of all genres for decades to come.
Studded with a diverse secondary cast including Johnny Cash, Rodney Crowell, Kinky Friedman, Billy Joe Shaver, and others, Streissguth's new book brings to life an incredible chapter in musical history and reveals for the first time a surprising outlaw zeitgeist in Nashville. Based on extensive research and probing interviews with key players, what emerges is a fascinating glimpse into three of the most legendary artists of our times and the definitive story of how they changed music in Nashville and everywhere.

    Revealing little-known Details does Captivate!
I am a huge Waylon fan, that is why I listened to this book. I sure did find what I was looking for. The detail and inside stories this author presents about Waylon and the Outlaws ring with truth, and shed a more original light on the Outlaw story instead of kust the generic version of the battle for artistic control and good times had by all.
Waylon's character is put under scrutiny here more than in his own biographical material, allowing me the opportunity to get to know the man better. Willy and Kris sure do get a large portion of the story, and theirs is as revealling and insightfull as any other artists biography out there.
This book skillfully tells the tale of multiple artists simultaneously, weaving in and out through their lives and around those people who supported them and witnessed the moments we all wish we could have seen. This book is a portal into the 70s and the nitty gritty details of what being a outlaw artist was like through the eyes of the most prominent 3; Waylon, Willy, and Kris.
    Captivating from start to finish.
    Highly recommend.
Thanks to the author for telling this story!
Excellent compilation of history & stories
This is a great listen, telling the stories and sharing the lives of the men that changed country music forever.

    Title: Roadshow
Subtitle: Landscape with Drums: A Concert Tour by Motorcycle
    Author: Neil Peart
    Narrator: Brian Sutherland
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 45 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-31-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 113 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
For 30 years, drummer, author, and songwriter Neil Peart had wanted to write a book about "the biggest journey of all in my restless existence: the life of a touring musician." Finally, the right time, and the right tour.
In the summer of 2004, after three decades, 20 gold albums, and thousands of performances spanning four continents, the band Rush embarked on a celebratory 30th Anniversary World Tour. The "R30" tour traveled to nine countries, where the band performed 57 shows in front of more than half a million fans. Uniquely, Peart chose to do his between-show traveling by motorcycle, riding 21,000 miles of back roads and highways in North America and Europe - from Appalachian hamlets and Western deserts to Scottish castles and Alpine passes.
Roadshow illuminates the daunting rigors of a major international concert tour, as well as Peart's exploration of the scenic byways and country towns along the way. His evocative and entertaining prose carries the listener through every performance and every journey, sharing the bittersweet reflections triggered by the endlessly unfolding landscape. Observations and reflections range from the poignantly, achingly personal to the wickedly irreverent.
Part behind-the-scenes memoir, part existential travelogue, Roadshow winds through 19 countries on both sides of the Atlantic, in search of the perfect show, the perfect meal, the perfect road, and an elusive inner satisfaction that comes only with the recognition that the journey itself is the ultimate destination.
The inner workings of the tour, the people Peart works with and the people he meets, the roads and stages and ever-changing scenery - all flow into an irresistible story.

Enjoyable, even for a non-fan of Rush
I was aware of the band called Rush, but didn't care for the little bit of their music I had heard in the past.
I had never heard the name 'Neil Peart' until a month ago when I listened to 'Ghost Rider'. I wouldn't call Ghost Rider an enjoyable book due to its central tragedy, but it was certainly well written and compelling.
I used my next credit for 'Roadshow'. This is a much more enjoyable book. It was interesting to learn how a big traveling music show operates.
I do have a little bit in common with Mr. Peart, we were both born in 1952 and we both like touring motorcycles. I've always been a shy person around strangers, but I can see I'm Mr Outgoing compared to this author.
Mr Peart's relationship with his fans is interesting. He appreciates them, but he's also very frightened by them. So frightened that immediately after a show ends he usually runs to his bus and 'gets of dodge' as quickly as he can.
The 'my fans scare me' theme runs throughout this book. Another theme is the authors love/hate relationship with the United States. I think love is winning out.
And of course, as a long distance rider I found the motorcycle stuff fascinating, and there is a lot of motorcycle in this book. It certainly would be nice to not worry about the cost of frequent visits to BMW dealers to fix all the little problems that come with a shiny red GS.
I have a Yamaha FJR sport touring bike, similar to the author's BMW, except faster.

    Publisher's Summary:
This, the second of three volumes of Susan Sontags journals and notebooks, begins where the first volume left off, in the middle of the 1960s. It traces and documents Sontags evolution from fledgling participant in the artistic and intellectual world of New York City to world-renowned critic and dominant force in the world of ideas with the publication of the groundbreaking Against Interpretation in 1966. As Consciousness is Harnessed to Flesh follows Sontag through the turbulent years of the 1960sfrom her trip to Hanoi at the peak of the Vietnam War to her time making films in Swedenup to 1981 and the beginning of the Reagan era. This is an invaluable record of the inner workings of one of the most inquisitive and analytical thinkers of the twentieth century at the height of her power. It is also a remarkable document of one individuals political and moral awakening.
    Members Reviews:
    Valuable Collection
The second volume of Susan Sontag's collected journals is an extraordinary testament to her brilliance and devotion to the creative life. This volume presents the perhaps the most productive and significant phase of her career as she publishes the major essays that were to appear in Against Interpretation. Here we find a truly voracious artist and intellectual-a thinker struggling with the tumultuous events of her time and struggling to develop a unique voice. Of course, we are entitled to see her lists-lists of authors, of movies, endless lists cataloging the trajectory of her creative life. There are really great and moving passages here-passages of vulnerability and self-doubt. Her personal life emerges as fairly frought and precarious. I was also suprised to see a great paucity of entries detailing her battle with cancer. Her son, David Rieff, has edited this collection. His comments reduce her work to that of a political commentator. I do not fully agree with his judgment that the reflections and entries about her trip to Vietnam are wise and incisive. And her trajectory as a political thinker was actually rather average for her generation. Yet was remains here, I believe, was the life of a real intellectual and artist. A thinker who devoted her undeniable gifts to novels, stories, film, and among the greatest American essays in modern letters.
I think this volume, and its predecessor, are ...
I think this volume, and its predecessor, are the only diaries I have ever read. It must nearly always be a thrill to see âthe man behind the curtainâ when reading diaries, and maybe especially in this case, given how carefully crafted Susan Sontagâs public writing and persona were. Before reading these volumes I was afraid they would confirm the impression given me from reading "Sempre Susan," by Sigrid Nunez, that Sontag lacked insight into herself and was psychologically kind of shallow. Both volumes roundly disconfirm this. I think her insights into herself were as incisive and penetrating as her cultural criticism was. There is an exquisitely rich, 20-something page analysis of her relationship with her mother somewhere in the middle of the second volume that is something to behold. Itâs a little heartbreaking that such insight didnât lead to greater peace of mind. In any case, I found these diaries exhilarating to read.

    Title: Where I Was From
    Author: Joan Didion
    Narrator: Gabrielle De Cuir
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-09-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 56 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
In her moving and insightful new book, Joan Didion reassesses parts of her life, her work, her history and ours. A native Californian, Didion applies her scalpel-like intelligence to the states ethic of ruthless self-sufficiency in order to examine that ethics often tenuous relationship to reality.
Combining history and reportage, memoir and literary criticism, Where I Was From explores Californias romances with land and water; its unacknowledged debts to railroads, aerospace, and big government; the disjunction between its code of individualism and its fetish for prisons. Whether she is writing about her pioneer ancestors or privileged sexual predators, robber barons or writers (not excluding herself), Didion is an unparalleled observer, and her book is at once intellectually provocative and deeply personal.
    Members Reviews:
    California belongs to Joan Didion.
Discussion of how California has 'changed,' then, tends locally to define the more ideal California as that which existed at whatever past point the speaker first saw it: Gilroy as it was in the 1960s and Gilroy as it was fifteen years ago and Gilroy as it was when my father and I ate short ribs at the Milias Hotel are three pictures with virtually no overlap, a hologram that dematerializes as I drive through it.
Joan Didion, Where I Was From
A place belongs forever to whoever claims it hardest, remembers it most obsessively, wrenches it from itself, shapes it, renders it, loves it so radically that he remakes it in his image."
    Joan Didion, The White Albumn
    "California belongs to Joan Didion."
    Michiko Kakutani
Probably 3.5. I liked it in parts, loved it in parts, felt let down by parts, but graded against her other greats (The Year of Magical Thinking, Slouching Towards Bethlehem, The White Album), it just doesn't quite hold up. Feels a bit cobbled together, but perhaps I'm being picky and petty.
In a 4-part book Didion explores the history and narrative of California, and like she is want to do, she kinda clears the table of myths, fables, and stories that people have constructed around place/time. She loves California, but recognizes in that great big state a bunch of contradictions and flaws that seem to be varnished over every couple of years. She loves California but wants it to be loved WITH the flaws, not with the bullshit. This involves a bit of journalistic deconstruction, revisionism, playful teasing, family history, re-reading of her own past writings, thoughts about death and family, property and family, and always, always California (especially Sacramento).
Anyway, mediocre, messy, meditative Didion is still pretty damn fantastic.
    Wonderful California Listen
Would you consider the audio edition of Where I Was From to be better than the print version?
Well, better, I don't know. But different, yes. I guess maybe better, because the narration was very good. I actually preferred this narrator to the celebrity Diane Keaton's reading of SLOUCHING TOWARDS BETHLEHEM.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the exposé about the corruption in the prison system. I had no idea. Now, I do.
Which character as performed by Gabrielle De Cuir was your favorite?
It was first person and very well done. So she did all the characters very well. At first, I thought she was slow, but within ten minutes she was spinning an amazing character.

    Title: Memories of Summer
Subtitle: When Baseball Was an Art, and Writing About It a Game
    Author: Roger Kahn
    Narrator: Mark Moseley
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 52 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-25-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 10 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
Acclaimed baseball writer Roger Kahn gives us a memoir of his Brooklyn childhood, a recollection of a life in journalism, and a record of personal acquaintance with the greatest ballplayers of several eras.
His father had a passion for the Dodgers; his mothers passion was for poetry. Somehow, young Roger managed to blend both loves in a career that encompassed writing about sports for the New York Herald Tribune, Sports Illustrated, the Saturday Evening Post, Esquire, and Time.
Kahn recalls the great personalities of a golden era - Leo Durocher, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson, Red Smith, Dick Young, and many more - and recollects the wittiest lines from 40 years in dugouts, press boxes, and newsrooms. Often hilarious, always precise about action on the field and off, Memories of Summer is an enduring classic about how baseball met literature to the benefit of both.
    Members Reviews:
Great book from a great writer
Great book from a great baseball writer, a nice companion piece to "The Boys of Summer." Unfortunately Moseley mispronounces many names (somebody narrating a book largely about the Dodgers does not know Leo Durocher?), often giving multiple pronunciations to the same person, but great stories of Kahn's life as a writer and the people he covered.
    Readers must pronounce names CORRECTLY!!
If you could sum up Memories of Summer in three words, what would they be?
I will add more when I finish the book.
How could the performance have been better?
C'mon... teach the reader how to pronounce names CORRECTLY! It's Leo Durocher not Durricher!!!! He was one of the greatest managers in baseball history. It is really sloppy not to be able to pronounce the names of real people correctly. I expect a higher standard from Audible. Roger Kahn is a remarkable writer and voice of the game of baseball, and deserves MUCH better.
    Any additional comments?
Roger Kahn is one of my favorite authors, and one of America's best!
    A Disappointing Performance
Would you try another book from Roger Kahn and/or Mark Moseley?
Absolutely! Roger Kahn is the best of our baseball writers. I grew up in the 40s and 50s following the exploits of the Dodgers, Giants, Yankees, and Tigers. They comprised the mythology of my youth. Nobody brings this wonderful time to life better than Kahn. Nobody writes about baseball with this wonderful author's elegance.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Memories of Summer?
Kahn and Willie Mays discussing the art of fielding in Mays' living room. Any scene involving the Brooklyn Dodgers. The evolution of Kahn's relationship with his father. Okay, I've mentioned more than one moment. The book affects me much too powerfully to pick only one moment. This is a wonderful, special book.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Anyone who cares about baseball history will be disappointed in Moseley's performance. How can a narrator presume to undertake this wonderful book without learning how to pronounce the players' names?! Moseley butchers many of them - Durocher, Bouton, Labine, Raschi - the list goes on and on. He also stumbles over a great deal of Kahn's rich use of vocabulary. Audible recordings are notable for solid performances.

Yes I Can is the self-portrait of one of the extraordinary men of our time, who became a figure of controversy because he dared to live his life not as a Negro but as a man. "I've got to be a star like another man has to breathe" writes Sammy Davis. "I've got to get so big, so powerful, so famous that the day will come when they'll look at me and see a man, and then somewhere along the way they'll notice he's a Negro."

Sammy Davis was the performer of all times. . .
What did you love best about Yes I Can?
While Sammy's life appeared glamorous, the book tells a very different story. It reveals the truth behind the broad, make-believe smile and the eyes that spoke louder than the voice.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Burt Boyar?
This book should have been narrated by a better voice. . .the one thing I did not like about the book.
    A Story Beautifully Told
Burt Boyar was emotional, REAL, loving and wonderful. I was moved to tears at times. I loved it. Would read again.
    Great story boringly read
What did you like best about Yes I Can? What did you like least?
The whole background of Sammy's life and over comings, his rise above adversity is a great story of his tenacity and grace in the front line of prejudice. The reading by Burt Boyar spoils a great bio.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Yes I Can?
    His army experience during WW2
What didnt you like about Burt Boyars performance?
His boring monologue, basically there is no emphasis of any in all his reading, it's beige while Sammy's life was technicolour.
Could you see Yes I Can being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
A great movie, I'll leave others to decide on the actors.
    An amazing biography
This is one person I knew nothing about, and I'm glad that I listened. It is a well written and fun biography.
    Great book great performance
Sammy Davis, Jr. Was one of the greatest entertainers of all time and this book certainly did him Justice. The near raider really captured his essence and sounded much like him and his story is captivating

    Any additional comments?
The latest medical news surrounding Valarie Harper broke just as I was finishing this audiobook. As I listened, enjoying every moment, I was amazed by the depth of her career and her love and affection for many friends and family. Her show "Rhoda" was a TV sensation, but she has done so much more since then, including a life filled with passion and care for those less fortunate. The depth of her sharing goes way beyond most bios. Her anecdotes made me laugh and her honesty and emotional stories renewed my love for the woman we knew as Rhoda. Bless you Valarie!
    Enjoyable
This audio book was very enjoyable. I had no idea that Miss Harper was in the chorus of many Broadway shows. The behind the scenes at the Mary Tyler Moore Show from audition to end was fascinating too. I recommend this book.
    Just wonderful
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I learned about Valerie and her famous Rhoda from Kathy Griffin's book (which is so good!). I had never seen Mary Tyler's show or Rhoda. I loved Valerie's story. It's very interesting and inspiring. Unlike Kathy's book, this book is not packed with jokes, it's just interesting to hear about someone trying so hard to get what they wanted. Her perseverance and her extremely positive attitude towards everything in her life are very admirable. It did make me regret not knowing abut her when she performed in so many wonderful plays.
