Entertaining, but with long pedantic sections

First, I discovered this book after seeing the two seasons of the Amazon TV series. This book is NOTHING like that. But more about that later.

If you are coming to this book without having seen the Amazon series, you will not be confused. The story is of a young musician, very talented it would seem, who moves to NYC, lives in a run-down apartment building, and makes her way through the world of classical music, with a side trip to Broadway orchestras.

The story is somewhat interesting, but the author shows her journalism roots (rather than entertainment) by interjecting dry statistics from newspapers, magazines, and government sources, on the state of classical music in the country.

But even the humanity of the story feels dry. Several characters appear throughout the book and we get to see their lives change. One of her friends has a very serious heart condition. The book takes us through the drama of all his operations and then decline. But there isn't any feeling to the story. We don't care.

Other characters feel just a dry. The author has a tendency to rank the quality of her friend's lives as to what kind of apartment they have, who they are married to, and what kind of music they create. The author eventually leaves the classical music field for journalism when she realizes she doesn't want to live in her apartment building after the age of 40. This is not how you create an empathetic character.

As far as the sex and drugs, they're in there, with a lot of booze on the side. I think we are supposed to be shocked that classical musicians, considered such a stiff and stuffy group, would smoke dope, snort cocaine, performed stoned, and sleep around with married people.

Sadly these are all the people the author seems to know.

But even these scandalous-sounding stories come out without any feeling. We don't care if someone plays stoned one night. Or a $10,000 flute is stolen from a restaurant.

This would be a great introduction to get someone hooked on Sir Terry. Random bits, some that have evolved into greater works and bits about beloved caracters.

A Blink, A Wink, A Nod

I really appreciated this compendium of every short story Terry Pratchett ever wrote, including his very first work at age 13, works perhaps not available anywhere else but in this book.

The reader did an excellent job.

I liked listening to this so much I bought the book in print as a birthday present for my grandson who is 13.

Another perfect offering from Sir Pratchett

An fascinating look into the beginnings of Terry Pratchett's writings, meeting Cohen the Barbarian, knobby Knobs, Vimes, Cpl. Carrot and DEATH for the first was a thrill. Will read / listen many times.

A nice way to remember Terry, but not his best

This screwball comedy crossed over from disc world to our world with some interesting insights. In the end, it probably for fans who love Terry's other Discworld novels already and want one last stroll down memory lane.

I still miss him

Many enjoyable short pieces and Pratchett's comments on those short pieces. He has a powerful imagination and it is fun to see it bent towards all his creativity.

Calvinball!!!!!!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Bill Watterson. This guy created one of the most popular comic strips ever and never wanted to turn the spotlight on himself. Try to picture him in a Hulu commercial with Seth MacFarlane...you can't.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

YES. But I didn't. This narrator is ridiculously easy to listen to.

I would absolutely recommend this to a friend. The story not only goes into great detail on the life of a comic strip legend. It also tells an interesting story of the history of comic strips in general.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked listening to Watterson's description and interpretations of specific pieces he's done. It's captivating hearing his motivation for a piece and where he draws inspiration.

Have you listened to any of Jeremy Arthurs other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to other audiobooks by this narrator and I must say that this is one of his best. His delivery of the story is excellent and I definitely felt drawn in to the life and works of Watterson.

This audiobook was a great listen and i definitely recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Calvin and Hobbes or any comic strip for that matter.

Yes! Bill Watterson is such an interesting person and I think Nevin Martell does a wonderful job of telling his story and sharing the frustrations fans have of not knowing more about the reclusive Watterson.

I loved Jeremy Arthur's voice throughout the entire audiobook. Sometimes narrators can be too monotone, especially in non-fiction, but I thought Jeremy Arthur was a perfect choice. I'll definitely be looking out for more of his work.

New insights to an old soul

I'm not a huge Santana fan but decided to checkout this audiobook after hearing an advert on the Howard Stern show.

I loved the message behind it and was not aware of this evolved soul walking amongst us.

I have never before recommended a book I have not finished, but this one is truly special. I am savoring every chapter in this remarkable bio. What an incredible story! The book traces in fascinating and revealing detail his odyssey. From his description of growing up n a rural Mexican village, to his journey through the Tijuana Bar scene as a teen, to his migration to San Francisco at EXACTLY the right time for his music to morph into the superb phenomenon of the music experience we know as Santana. this book enchants and enlightens.

New and Renewed Respect For A Living Legend

Would you listen to Respect again? Why?

The story was researched and written well and told in a way that was entertaining.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ruth Bowen Aretha's outspoken and salty booking agent who didn't have any reservations in telling it the way she saw it. Everyone should be so lucky to have a Ruth Bowen in their lives.

What about Brad Raymonds performance did you like?

His performance was great and told the story with unabandoned engagement and bright imagination giving each character their own vocal inflections and tone.

This book was far more complimentary to the persona of Aretha Franklin that I thought it would be based on her own reaction to the book proclaiming it was just a book of lies. Not only did it recount several stories that I had known about previously being an enduring fan of Aretha over the years, it also includes historical events and other stories told by Aretha's contemporaries who had interactions with her. I thought the book was well written and researched and should give us a new...or renewed respect for this woman who has had a remarkable career in spite of many obstacles that were personal, professional, real and imagined, imposed by others and self imposed. As the author stated there is not just one story of Aretha, but several. And this story as told by Ritz, paints her in a humanistic light fraught with frailties and imperfections of which she should not be ashamed of and Ritz should not have to apologize for.

Very well researched book

I don't usually read unauthorized biographies but I have tremendous respect for David Ritz and I am an unapologetic Aretha groupie. The first thing that struck me about the book was the amount of research that was obviously applied. I knew very little about the Rev. C.L. Franklin's life outside of the church and found this information to be fascinating.

An Unsparing Portrait of a Southern Kinsman

When I was a child, I used to pretend I was Jerry Lee Lewis and would blast his music next to the piano. I couldn't play like him but it was fun to imagine. That's what comes to mind when I think of the great Jerry Lee. Just looking at the cover of this book gives an impression of a rebel who couldn't care less of what you or I thought of him.

The fiery pianist is known for his hard living and tumultuous personal life. With his fans rolling down the highway with their windows down and their elbows sticking out listening to the euphoric beats of a new age.

This book reflects on the life that he lived, and that his mama and daddy lived - clawing their way to some existence and hoping that Jerry Lee's talent would carry them. Bragg gets Lewis to relive some really awful things, hilarious things, and other things I thought were awful that turned out to be hilarious.It's a little bit what I imagined riding one of those mechanical bucking bulls would be like drunk, with one arm tied behind your back. It was interesting. Jerry Lee Lewis feeling his way back down through the past is like blindly going through a hallway lined with razor blades.

His whole a torture chamber of his own making. If Jerry Lee Lewis lived in hell, he will look you right in the eye and tell you he lived in a worldly hell of his own making.The most difficult thing was that often a story would end in a very Southern Gothic way. He buried a lot of people that he cared about, that he loved. If you live to be 80 years old, then you're going to bury a lot of people. But he buried people that went far too soon. Two sons just to begin with. That was the first thing. There is tragedy and there is tragedy as Jerry Lee Lewis.

Gets Good after Chapter Five

I was despairing at having chosen this audio book as I slogged through the first four chapters, which cover his family history, but once he started in on his own life, in chapter five, things started looking up, and in the end, it was a rewarding listen. (There are thirty-nine chapters in total).

After Brexit and my country's own recent crazy election, I was tempted to once again read Gibbon's The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. I first read all 3,589 pages of Gibbon's fantastic history over five years ago in 2011.

I decided to put off my re-read of Gibbon's masterpiece and instead read his 'Memoirs'. I am glad I did. This is one of those underrated, under-read masterpieces. It reminded me in many ways of Education of Henry Adams and other artistic memoirs. The first half could almost be considered a Künstlerroman, but Gibbon spends enough time in his maturity and decline to probably grow beyond that adolescent genre.

Anyway, the prose is beautiful, with many, many quotable passages and observations about such figures as Voltaire, Hume, etc.. Edward Gibbon, besides being an historian was also a member of parliament during the American Revolution, so those aspects of the memoir are also very interesting. Finally, his discussions about his great work is worth alone the price of admission. Anyone interested in 18th century history would love his candor, his wisdom, and his humor. In some ways his openness reminded me a bit of Montaigne and Pepys. If anything, now, this voyage into minor Gibbon has made me more likely to re-read Decline and Fall.

He lived an eventful life of the mind...

... but, well, lived an otherwise uneventful life. The writing is beautiful. I reversed several times just so I could listen to the words again. That said, he had no paramours and no real enemies. Not much happens outside his expansive mind. His opinions of writers and philosophers are great to hear, but, well, sometimes you want some juicy stuff. And it's just not here.

I'm glad I listened to it, but I can't say it captivated me.

interesting observations on a depressed genius who was underappreciated in his own time. The narration was extremely well done.

A fine short biography

This short read is a terrific introduction to Poe's life and work. It captures the failures and successes achieved by Poe during his short, troubled 40 years, and is narrated by one of the most professional readers in the audio books world. The one problem with an introductory biography in an audio format is that without the physical copy and footnotes, you are prevented from consulting other works relied upon by the author. But with Poe this is a minor issue because the next step for the listener is not another bio but Poe's own work, prose or poetry, and these are widely available in one volume editions at any bookstore.

Very good but wanted more.

This is a good, succinct view of Poe's life. I did enjoy it just wanted more about him. I'm usually complaining when a book is way too long, but in this case I would like it to have been longer.

Overall an informative and worthwhile audio book.

Woe- Poe in life is a Very tragic story!

I found the narrator to be very satisfactory to my ears and maintained my interest for the duration of the story.

The length was about right and held my interest all the way through.
