    Title: Fire in the Blood
    Author: Irene Nemirovsky
    Narrator: Jim Norton
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-25-07
    Publisher: Random House AudioBooks
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
An old man looks back on a chequered life, concealing truths he will not reveal until the end. Fire in the Blood starts quietly, lyrically, but then races away with narrative twists and surprise revelations. A young man, newly married, is found drowned in the mill stream; an old man is more concerned about the repayment of a debt than with his young wife; a young woman asks Silvio to plead her case; no-one is quite as they seem. Young women have to marry old men, youthful passions burn, and the regrets of old age simmer in this rural community where secrets are kept close and passed from one generation to the next.
Némirovsky looks at her characters, both young and old, with the same clear-eyed distance and humanity she displayed in Suite Française, unpeeling layer after layer. Atmospheric and haunting, Fire in the Blood is a gripping literary find.

    *****CAUTION SOME SPOILERS AHEAD******
Sean and Nadine are divorced. His friend/business partner comes to her asking if she knows where Sean is and telling her that they need money for their struggling company. Some things are revealed in the conversation. No, Nadine had never been involved w/ OM, and surely Sean wasn't involved w/ the OW. (but we don't ever really know) Nadine goes off on her little vacation and soon Sean shows up in her room because of the revelations told to him by his buddy. He never believed Nadine when she denied an affair w/ OM, but he will believe his buddy who got the word from her! Of course, Sean still doesn't fully trust that she wasn't w/ the OM or any other after their divorce.
They also had other problems in their marriage: he wanted her to give up her work and have babies while she wasn't ready to do that yet. Sean was over the top w/ his jealousy and he still can't seem to trust her. However, Nadine seems to trust him when he denies an affair w/ OW during their marriage.
This one left me w/ one glaring question and prevented me from truly enjoying the book. Yes, I even wore my rose colored glasses, but they didn't help either. The question of the OW was never fully answered. Nadine's thoughts had Sean being obsessed w/ OW, always talking about her. She believed he left her for OW and he and OW were together for several months. Larry, Sean's friend, states that Sean didn't leave Nadine for OW that their marriage broke up over OM. Nadine says that Sean lied and that she had asked Sean outright if he was having an affair w/ OW and he did NOT deny it! So was he? Did he later after the divorce? What was going on? Other than that one question that was never fully solved for me, their r/s was very enjoyable to read about. I just didn't like his possessiveness and whole jealousy of her and the OM's working r/s while he went on about OW and worked away from home a lot. The way Sean constantly accused Nadine of being unfaithful reeked of him projecting on to her.
So sad that her life and wrtiting career were cut short ...
Another compelling story by Iréne Némirovsky. This story begins as innocent narrative then heart-breaking layers are revealed, laying bare the souls of the characters in the story. This is the type of book you begin reading as "a light read" then get so involved that you wake up at three in the morning to read it.

    Title: Ivanhoe
    Author: Sir Walter Scott
    Narrator: Brian Cox
    Format: Abridged
Length: 3 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-01-05
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
With a gallery of memorable characters, high and low, Ivanhoe is a powerful and exciting evocation of a medieval world of jousting, baronial rivalry, siege warfare, and trial by combat, and makes no attempt to gloss over the violence and brutality that lay behind the chivalric ideals.
    Members Reviews:
I suspect that he was overwhelmed and killed by his own guilt when his heart was broken by the beautiful Rebecca. In a sense
The writing for this classic book is old fashioned and tarried. The hero in this book seems to be King Richard, the Lion-heart, who has given more attention, descriptions and character dimensions by the author. He in result has become a character more interesting than the chivalrous Ivanhoe who even though has been given the title of the book. The final combat scene between Ivanhoe and Bois-Guilbert, to me, is an anti-climax, without clearly shown how Bois-Guilert being defeated and die by Ivanhoe. I suspect that he was overwhelmed and killed by his own guilt when his heart was broken by the beautiful Rebecca. In a sense, he is quite romantic, from the modern point of views.
Referring to the Modern Library Classics paperback edition
No wonder this novel is a classic! I'm sure there isn't much I can add to the praises of Ivanhoe. I will just say that I enjoyed it very much. I mostly wanted to comment on the edition that I read.
I purchased The Modern Library Classics (paperback) edition. The quality of the book is fair, for a paperback. There are a few footnotes throughout the book and quite a few notes on the text in the back of the book, some were written by Scott himself. I only found a few of these notes to be helpful; as for the rest, they did nothing to enhance my understanding of the text and some left me with even more questions than when I started. Many of them refer to other books for further explanation.
Also, there are quite a few phrases throughout the story in Latin and French. Some are explained in the text while the rest are left untranslated. I wish their translations would have been included in the above mentioned notes. I wish there had been a pronounciation guide for the names of the characters as well.
I would give the book 5 stars but for the problems I mentioned above. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the middle-ages, knights, chivalry, King Richard, etc...even if you have no particular interest in these things, you should at least give the book a chance. After all, it's a classic and as with most classics, you can hardly ever go wrong.
Fun Adventure, A Bit Slow In Places
I guess I am a romantic. I liked the action and the thought that men did the right thing because it was the noble thing to do. I was a little disturbed by the Christian treatment of the Jews, which was a key theme throughout the story. My only criticism is that right when I thought the action would "heat up," the author chose to describe some scene - like the castle of Coningsburg. Also, I expected the storyline to be more developed in places and it just ended abruptly. I was pleasantly surprised to see Robin Hood integrated into the story. Overall, I enjoyed reading it as a work of historical fiction.
This hasn't changed in the last century, or so. ...
My favorite part is when we are transported to "another part of the forest" to continue the tale.

Length: 3 hrs and 54 mins

    Release date: 11-27-00
    Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 11 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
In this, Dickens' most openly political novel, we discover the terrible human consequences of a ruthlessly materialistic philosophy in the lives of Thomas Gradgrind's family, brought up to believe that only "Facts! Facts! Facts!" have any meaning. Set in Coketown, a typical Lancashire milltown, the novel graphically exposes the truth about Victorian "progress".
    Members Reviews:
Only wish I'd spent my credit on a longer book.
The various character voices are fantastically distinctn Anton lesser seemlessly transforms his voice from character to character in a way that seems effortless. I shouldn't have to tell you that the story is, of course, a treasure and a pleasure - as Dickens always is.

    Absorbing book
This is one of those books that you hate to see end. I typically read mysteries but this book had such a high rating that I decided to read it. Am I ever glad that I did. The book has suspense, romance, history. The characters are well developed and interesting. And you enter the world of art, wine making and Paris. A great book!
    Good Story - Poor Exectution.
It is important for all of the background information and description to feel as if it is part of the story, the environment, the emotional world of the story so that all parts of the story fit together organically. When I was first learning to draw, I had to work at making the trees look as if they were growing out of the earth rather than just stuck on the ground like statues.
This book is full of descriptions and background that are inorganic to the text. They are trees just stuck on the ground.
Robbins use of metaphor, simile, analogy suffer from a lack of introduction and transition and relationship to the body of the story. It was embarrasing.
    Undecided
I can't quite work out if I really liked this one or not. I ended up wanting to skip over the bits narrated by the female character - the man was much more interesting! Probably better if you know the art works referred to, or the locations visited.
Both narrators did an excellent job though!
    Tedious & pretentious garbage
I only give it a star because the form requires at least one. Awkward and overblown dialogue. Hamfisted attempts at lyrical description. How did this book get published, and how could the narrators bear to read it? I felt embarrassed for the writer just listening to it.
    Skip it.
I have to agree with the other reviewer who gave this low marks. This is a book full of name dropping, and of descriptions so overblown as to become laughable. The writing really is 2nd rate and the story is quite predictable. Neither narrator can pronounce French correctly, which annoyed me no end. I forced myself to stay with it to the end, and it never got any better.

    Publisher's Summary:
The dazzling new novel from the Man Booker Prize-winning author of The Sea
Old Adam Godleys time on earth is drawing to an end, and as his wife and children gather at the family home, little do they realize that they are not the only ones who have come to observe the spectacle. The mischievous Greek gods, too, have come; as tensions fray and desire bubbles over, their spying soon becomes intrusion becomes intervention, until the mortals lives right before their eyes seem to be changing faster than they can cope with.
Overflowing with bawdy humour, Banville has allowed his twinkling eye to rove through memories of the past and relationships of the present in this moving family drama. The Infinities is both a salacious delight and a penetrating exploration of the terrifying, wonderful, immutable plight of being human.
    Members Reviews:
    wonderful book, not-so-good narrator
Where does The Infinities rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Up amongst the best - it is (as many have pointed out) an unusual book - but Banville writes so wonderfully - and I found it profound and thought-provoking...how would the 'Gods' perceive us in our peculiar little lives (and in this case, particularly - our deaths?)
    It is a fascinating journey...
What other book might you compare The Infinities to, and why?
Although quite different - I think about it alongside Julian Barnes 'Nothing to be Frightened Of' -and his more recent Levels of Life...both meditations on death...
What didnt you like about Julian Rhind-Tutts performance?
Ah! here was the real difficulty for me. What first struck me was his tone of what came to my ear as 'mocking'. I am not sure if he meant to convey that - but it is something as though he is speaking the words in a way that conveys a certain sarcasm or patronising tone. I have read the book 'on paper' as well - and it is because of this, that I had such a vastly different experience of it, had I only listed to the audiobook. Reading it on paper - it is compassionate, lightly and interestingly humourous at times - but not the sort of 'light' mockery and yes, almost disdainful tone that J R-T manages to convey.
Half way through listening I also realised that he puts TOO much effort into every single syllable - so his intonation in a single sentence runs the gambit of high to low to minor to major ...and it is EXHAUSTING to listen to. Perhaps he is trying too hard - and I am reminded of the greatest actors that are just very simple -
Banville's writing although so beautiful and artful, has a stark simplicity to it - and this reading of it is like being on a roller coaster of the voice. It detracts from the story and the prose.
Sorry Mr Rhind-Tutt. I like your other readings - but not this one.
    Don't do it
It is really difficult to get into . This is the only book I have given up on.
