This is a good read as far as it goes
This is a good read as far as it goes. When I finished I didn't feel like I had read a complete story - not even a short story. It reads more like sample chapters than a complete story. That's why I gave it 3 starts.

    Publisher's Summary:
The aliens have landed, and this time they're not hostile. They're just rude. Coming in waves of rocket ships, the aliens not only refuse to acknowledge the existence of Earth's cultures. They refuse to acknowledge the existence of humanity itself. The aliens by means of their bulk block entry into cars, grocery stores, even elevatorswithout malice or even purpose.
No one knows what it's like to be ignored by the aliens more than Craig Mencken, an amateur journalist who writes inane copy for a magazine tycoon. A pair of aliens have invaded his home, abused his furniture, and disrupted his life. Who thought first contact could be such a nuisance? But when Mencken's employer demands the story of the century, a fictional interview with an alien, the sinister truth about the invasion is accidentally revealed.
Soon Mencken's ex-boyfriend is dropping hints about a mysterious cabal that promises to rid the aliens from neighborhoods like exterminators do with vermin. Then a narcissistic federal agent wants Mencken to spy on the cabal for the sake of his country. As if life weren't already hard enough, the ''dozers'' - cubic machines capable of demolishing skyscrapers in minutes - start landing across the globe, and it does not seem likely the aliens will ignore mankind for much longer.

Decent story with some annoying aspects
This is a well told story, with a main character we come to care about, and a plot that progresses well and is well paced, and a unique idea. My small issue is the role of women, which is practically non-existent, except to be disparaged as in some way dispicable. Granted there are plenty of stories with heterosexual protagonists that seem to focus exclusively on one gender... I can think of several brilliant novels that do so. But there is something off putting about having one gender there only to be kind of spat upon as repulsive, presumably because the main character is has some issue, or perhaps the author. This is not the worst - I had to return a book called. 18% gray, which featured Homosexual protagonists in a future dystopia. Ok, fine... But it was SO vicious and hateful toward women, literally mocking them and their bodies as dispicable. Books like that do no favors to the gay community, and are not, in my opinion, representative of most gay people. This book is not nearly as bad as that, but has some of the same flaws. SO the world is ending, but women seem to have dropped off the planet, have almost no role at all... Except one character described as repulsive and not worthy of her hot husband... aside from that women are barely there, and our "hero" talks about "holding his nose" at the idea of touching one sexually.... Ok, fine.. What if someone said that about a gay man? That would be totally unacceptable, I am sure, to this author.
It is sad that this writer, who is clearly talented, can't write women, has no interest in writing women, feels they deserve no place in such a story, and has to be kind of nasty. Unfortunate as it could have been a really well done book - but it was SO glaring. I could have gotten over the lack of women in the book, but for the peppering with hate that comes now and again... Of course the main alien is a woman... But we are lead to hate them and her. A lot. For good reason. I hope the author gets over his issues.

    Five Stars
Brian Daley is an awesome writer! Love this series.
    GammaLAW!
I went into this book feeling a sadness, knowing that with Mr. Daley passing away, this would probably be the last new material I would ever read from him.
Although GammaLAW was broken down into 4 seperate parts, it was written as one book and was [probably] intended to be read as one book. I kept this in mind, and I think it gave me a deeper appreciation for it. GammaLAW is also a harder read than any of his other works, and so it might seem to some people who like other books of Daley's as not so enjoyable. I understand completely, but there are too many 2- and 3-star ratings for it.
Brief synopsis: a force of Exts from the planet Concordance under Allgrave Burning are recruited to join LAW (the Legal Annexation of Worlds) and participate in a GammaLAW mission (Gamma is low priority, Alpha is high, and Beta is somewhere in between) under the command of Commissioner Dextra Haven, who believes that she can find an end to the interstellar war between Humanity and the alien Roke on the planet of Aquamarine. Murphy's Law strikes almost from the beginning, and they spend the rest of the time trying just to survive.
A word of warning: it follows around 4 main groups of characters and is a harder read than any of his other books, but I believe that if you can see past these shortcomings and just read the book, you'll probably like it. If you like Brian Daley, but have a hard time with hard reads, it's probably for the best that you look elsewhere.
In style, it's closer to his Coramonde books than Alactiry Fitzhugh and Hobart Floyt. It's more graphic and more serious in its tone, whereas Fitzhugh/Floyt, Solo & Company, and A Tapestry of Magics have a more playful, sarcastic tint to them. There are very few, if any, funny or light-hearted parts in GammaLAW. It's all about hi-tech military warfare, and the outcomes and repercussions of it. Don't be expecting anything close to his other works.
Although this doesn't rank near the top of my favorite books, the story is solid and believable. Mr. Daley was very good about researching his topics and getting the facts and physics straight. I found only one problem, if it is a problem and not just me, but it's a minor one: he describes the sling guns several times as having a noticeable recoil (if I read it right). This would be accurate if you're talking about firearms, in which the bulllet has its own propellant that pushes backward to send the round out the barrel. However, the sling gun works much like a slingshot, pushing the round forward through the barrel with an elastical force, not backward.

    Show Us, Don't Tell Us.
Would you try another book from George B. Wallace and/or Linda Velwest?
Isn't that supposed to be some kind of writer's motto: Show them, don't tell them? Maybe George Wallace didn't get the memo because he spends the first 8 minutes (of the audiobook) on an introduction telling us what's going to happen, including that the events in this story lead into the next book. Yeah, we read. We know about sequels and series of books. That's a little condescending. The introduction is also filled with things that are about to be revealed in the story. Really, Mr. Wallace, why would I want to read this book at all now? I can just skip to the next one. Except I won't.
I figured I would give the book a chance anyway but in the first chapter he fills his description of about 5 different things with long strings of adjectives.
"As Steve arrived, a large Douglass fir tree, the original invasion site was undergoing serious, rapid, multiple attacks."
"He was making notes when his ear caught an explosive sound. It was the sharp, popping, crack, creaking, shrieking, staccato sound of a breaking, falling forest giant."
This is just an annoying, irritating, distracting, lazy way of writing. I quit after this sentence, only 12:31 into the book.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Maybe Ben Bova. I'm in the mood for some good old-fashioned sci-fi.
Have you listened to any of Linda Velwests other performances before? How does this one compare?
Not sure but I don't think so. I think she did the best with what she had.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Irritation.

A wild mix of fantasy, action/adventure, Western, and science fiction, this audiobook is a new twist on the space Western and a rollicking ride across the vagaries and lives of a dragon wrangler and his sidekicks on Planet Terul.
Follow Buck Johnson, Skeeter Evans, and Snort Jones as they attempt to earn enough money to get off Terul, and get to some place where the money comes easier and is a lot more fun. But, as you'll soon see, breaking, roping, herding, and rounding up dragons - especially when there are more than a few green-broke korths and churlish native Terullians involved - doesn't always turn out quite as expected.
