A funny, esoteric brew of horror tropes
Ben Ohmar has crafted a funny, esoteric brew of horror tropes juxtaposed with a menu of Yuppie generational angst. The unusual site of corpses launching into travesties of classical poetry delivers wickedly whimsical strokes of tongue-in-cheek fantasy that may ultimately prove to be prophetic.

When an accident involving sunlight and a telescope alters Greg's vision, he suddenly finds himself with a strange new ability that drains psychic fragments of a person's soul from their body, killing his victim in the process. Despite trying to hide behind a pair of sunglasses, the slightest naked glimpse activates his power. And the next available appointment for a visit with an optometrist is weeks away at the earliest.

When Ashley's best friend, Dani Staras, beseeches Greg to help her persuade Ashley to leave Flint and regain some life stability, Greg's efforts to lay low and avoid eye contact with people is thrown into peril.
Torn between wanting to help his sister and trying to keep anyone else from falling victim to his lethal stare, Greg turns to Serenity Fleace, a psychic who may not be what she appears. Gripping
Optical Osmosis is the story of a man who suffers an accident involving sunlight and a telescope that should have blinded him, but instead he ends up with a strange new ability. This ability sucks the psychic soul from a person -- and kills them in the process. Despite trying to hide behind a pair of sunglasses he can take a life with a momentary glance.
Beesler crafts a unique story in a compelling way. You find yourself sitting on the edge of your seat as you swipe from page to page wondering what was going to come up in Gary's way next.
    Good Read
Well written by a the kind of interesting mind we all enjoy meeting at the coffee shop. Two thumbs up.

I love Jeff Beesler's books and can't wait for him to release more!

    Good book!
The phrase "if looks could kill" takes on a sinister meaning...
You know the catch-phrase "if looks could kill"?
Well, it takes on a sinister meaning for 20-something-year-old construction worker and basketball fanatic Greg Knops, when after an eye injury, he develops a strange osmotic power. It's the ability to suck a person's soul from their physical body with a single stare... a "death glare" to be precise!
This story has a host of characters and their intertwining relationships form the basis of the puzzle pieces.

Time travel at the beginning of a new year.
I like Nick Reynold's short story set around the midnight in New Year 2013, and it's an interesting one with a twist along with interesting characters. I have read his trilogy entitled Theroretical, along with the Grandfather Paradox, Grandson Paradox, and I have the Twin Paradox to read next. I recommend reading his time travel stories, and start with his earlier ones to reach his latest releases. Although except for the trilogy, which should be read beginning in episode 1 and finishing with episode 3, they are stand alones. Definitely a fun read and enjoyable characters and plotting to keep any reader engaged until the ending.

Great story that is perfectly narrated!
    Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed listening to Gabrielle read this excellent story. She did each character justice, while not distracting from the story itself. This is a well written story and I plan to listen to it again soon!
    Electric Blues on Audible
This story was so different than what I expected! It made me think and look into a deeper meaning of every scene. Thanks for the great story Shaun and the perfect audio voice Gabrielle Olexa! Very robotically done :) and can't believe how well you transitioned the various voices of the story.
    a definite listen!
Would you listen to Electric Blues again? Why?
I would listen to Electric Blues again right before I listen to the sequel, so I could remember how everything went down.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Arty, because that is how i feel about myself.
What about Gabrielle Olexas performance did you like?
Her granny voice was stupendous and she makes me all tingly inside.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes! I would of listen to this all in one sitting if it was 16 hours long.

Great listen. I cannot wait for further books done by these 2.

    Title: ELECTRIC BLUES

~ I received a free copy of this audiobook through AudioBookBlast dot com in exchange for an honest review.
PA3025 is an obsolete robot who was created to be a PA (Personal Assistant). Yes, he's a robot ... and he's depressed.
His "therapist" - a man named Knickers tells him that he needs to volunteer his services to someone who could never afford an actual personal assistant.
This is how he meets Madelaine, a partly-senile, half blind, old-school technophobe with two arthritic cats.
Madelaine nicknames PA3025 "Arty" and the name sticks.
Arty helps Madelaine and Madelaine helps Arty and together they try to find meaning in their lives.
This audiobook was very different from other robot/android stories that I have read and/or listened to. Yes, it is technically a Science Fiction story, but it is more a story of what it means to be "alive" and the importance of purpose rather than the action/thriller type of story that is typical of the Science Fiction genre.
Narrator Gabrielle Olexa does a 'spot-on' job as the voice of Madelaine. She is very believable as an elderly woman and her performance of Madelaine perfectly captured the nuances of an aging woman. The only small issue I had with the narration was that using a female narrator as the voice of Arty was a bit confusing. Until Arty's "gender" was revealed I believed that PA3025 was a female robot model.

    Nice idea but poor execution
Iâll preface my review with saying that I only got 25% done with the book before I gave up. I liked the premise of the book and wanted to finish it to see what happened, but I couldnât get through the characters and writing style. Maybe because itâs a YA book and Iâm not the target audience, but it seemed over simplified and too descriptive as if the author is trying too hard. One example is the line on page 25 âIt felt nice on my lungs as they expanded.â Not sure why he had to tell me that his lungs expanded while he couldnât just say he inhaled. Also I didnât feel like âNiceâ was very descriptive. Also on page 49 âI was the crimson gas jet out the butt of one of the six sectionsâ. Really? Butt? Heâs talking about a ship and uses butt, not rear, not aft he used butt.
From the character standpoint, I know theyâre kids but man theyâre annoying. There is a bit of a love triangle which creates some issues but my biggest annoyance with them was Maggy who comes up with a clever name for something (I donât want to give away what in case you do choose to read the book) and whenever someone uses a different name (which is totally valid) she quickly corrects them to use her term. It just seems like she should say âLook at me!â instead.
If these things donât seem to bother you I would recommend this book as I think it could be a lot of fun, but I just couldnât do it.
    Review for "At the End"
This book had so much potential. I wanted to like it. I really did. Unfortunately, I just didn't like it at all. The idea is great, but the writing and flow need a lot of work.
I would have liked a lot more information on the world before everyone disappeared. The description mentions the soaring population and the outlawing of birth control. I would have liked to know why and how this happened; it sounded so interesting.
I've read several reviews that said the beginning of the book was slow. Yes, in a way it was, but the beginning was really the only part I liked. Once Darrel and Felix met up with Maggy, things went way downhill for me.

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Was the super-continent of Pangaea split because of a management dispute? Is the biblical flood the earliest evidence of why "technology and water don't mix?" If you always suspected that mass extinctions, such as the Black Death, had an otherworldly reason, you just might be right.
Is there a real message hidden in the mysterious manuscripts that human sages and savants have created through the generations? Is there life out there, beyond our planet? And why has none of it shown up on Earth yet?
Earth-Sim is a unique spin on the history of Earth and the history of mankind. What if Earth and the entire universe were actually part of a simulation program? What if the most iconic and memorable events in Earth's history were decisions (or more frequently accidents) triggered by two college students, Jem Moran and Kir Davos, who are still sorting out the finer points of working together and more importantly, still arguing over the finer points of planetary management?
Bring your sense of humor. Earth-Sim is frequently whimsical and often irreverent. Either way, you finally have someone to blame for the state the world is in.
    Members Reviews:
Quirky Look at the History of Earth
Summary: Jem Moran and Kir Davos participate in the world simulation program which sets clueless college and grad students in charge of planets. (Its like risk on the galactic scale.)
    Additional Comments:
    - Overall, I enjoyed the book. Its got an interesting premise (ie. Every major disaster/event to touch Earth has an explanation in the incompetence and/or the moral decisions made by neophyte planetary managers or mishaps caused by letting a 5 year old boy near the planet.)
    - Its almost like two stories though. Earth-sim is 80% philosophical discussion between Jem and Kir and 20% other plot that I cant talk about too much without giving spoilers.
    - The philosophical discussion piece could have been a hilarious short story. Not being a particular fan of philosophy though, the length of those discussions was on the long side to me.
    - The frequent Wikipedia quotes bothered me. Here you have a book about an advanced civilization and the inspirational and informational quotes at the beginning chapters come from arguably the weakest online source.
    - Im torn on the inclusion of the 20% other plot. Everything ties together nicely in the end, but Im not sure its necessary unless its just there to warrant a sequel. There are enough openings to set up a sequel but Im not sure how that would tie back to the Earth-sim project.
    - What I enjoyed: There are enough references to history and geek stuff to keep it funny. Ie. origin of Superman, Atlantis, loch ness monster, tower of babel, the flood, etc.
    - The narration was handled well.
    - Content warnings: There are a few curse words scattered about.
Conclusion: A quirky look at planetary history wrapped in a scifi short story about a girl with a secret to protect. (not counted as a spoiler b/c thats in the description)
*I received a free copy from the author. The choice to review as well as the rating and words are completely my own.

    Poor story, poor narrating
I am three hours into this and cannot recommend it. I will probably finish it out of pure stubbornness because I bought it. The story is implausible. The characterizations are superficial. The narration is strained, with inappropriate inflections, emphasis and forced emotion. The whole endeavor sounds like a high school sophomore's first attempt at sci-fi. Maybe this works for teenagers. Looking at the portfolio of this author's work, I see a lot of titles that might be attractive to younger listeners. Obviously, the author is prolific and apparently successful. Not with me, however. I will pass on any more tripe like this.

    Not bad at all
    I purchased this book after reading the first in the series as a free ebook. This author is fun and imaginative and has a unique spin on the fantasy genere. My only complaint is some of the terminology is very 21st century. For examle the author described the two halves of the army joining back together as the smaller forces "hooked back up" with the larger. I actually laughed out loud. All around a good read though :}
    The whole series is excellent!
I like fantasy, but often find that when someone (usually a good guy like Superman) seems unbeatable, it ruins the story bbecause there is no risk of failure. I am thoroughly impressed with this author's ability to take a supernatural, seemingly all-powerful being and believably tie in a place for humans to take an active role in the outcome of the story.
    The whole series is amazing!
    great read, but...
The formatting is a bit wonky and there is no searchible table of contents. Otherwise, I like the storyline. Dialogue can feel a bit stiff and unnatural at times, and random modern dialects occasionally slip out. Overall positive experience. I plan on purchasing the whole series. Hopefully the rest are well formatted.
The Goddess Queen; The Rys Chronicles Book II
I have read 2 of the Rys Chronicles series and enjoyed them very much and will definitely read the rest in the series. Great entertainment, exciting and keeps your attention right down to the last page. Great writing!!
    excellent...you'll want them all...
The only downside to these books is, I couldnt help but buy all of them. Rys Rising and the Rys Chronicles. I highly recommend reading the Rys Rising series first.
