This book was just ok maybe a little boring. It made a few interesting points.

too superficial

the entire book is a repetion of the idea "innovation and creativity is a result of supportive culture in which collaboration is mixed with some competition and innovators enjoy good social image and rewards". There is nothing new about this. The book does not provide concrete examples at all. So it is just a fluffy conceptual piece of writing.

Good book but performance is lacking.

This is a good book if all it does it change your perspective and cause you to rethink your questions before you ask them.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator sounds like a computer generated voice. I found it almost intolerable.

Decent book, horrible narration

Would you consider the audio edition of Power Questions to be better than the print version?

No, absolutely not. The content is decent and can be inspiring, but the narration by one of the authors is so horribly bad that I just stopped listening and never finished the book. I went out and got the print version instead. Another problem with the audiobook is the lack of an index of all the questions.

I never reached the ending.

What didnt you like about Andrew Sobel and Jerold Panas s performance?

One of them (I don't know which) was OK, the other was terrible, in fact so bad that I stopped the audiobook.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. Its structure (many chapters, each on a separate 'power question') means it's best enjoyed in little bites.

A Good Listen...Worth Two (Or More)

There are definitely some thought provoking questions here that could help someone truly stand out in a personal or professional setting. The stories add interest and context to the questions, and often left me asking questions of my own.

I will definitely be giving this audiobook another listen (or two) to help the information sink in.

While I like the fact that the two authors alternate narrating chapters of the book, one of the authors reminds me a bit of Tommy Chong, which is a bit distracting at times.

Also, it would be nice to have a PDF reference sheet of all the questions to review now and then, rather than having to stop what you're doing and write them down. I started to write them down, and then I realized I had missed questions because I was too engrossed in the stories.

Loved this book

I loved this book because it explores a subject that is not covered by many text books. I learned a leadership skill (leading by questions puts you in control of the conversation).

The narrator did a great job of letting me hear the story, instead of hearing a person talking to me. When you do not even think about the reader, that is a very good narration!

Yes and No. I did not want to stop at any point, but found it best for me to break it into concept sections and ruminate upon (and put into practice) what I learned.

Any additional comments?

I had been experiencing a professional doldrums for a couple of years, but I am again focused and zealous with this ambition-injection (i.e. some oxygen to my professional coals). This book is a valid, sustainable process for "getting ahead" at work. I am already benefitting from it. Whether you need energizing or need a how-to for getting ahead, this will do it for you.

okay info, would rather have a copy for notes. I think there are some good tips and strategies to implement, but I recommend buying the book to be able to review easier.

Important content, very difficult to listen to.

I am a big fan of Edmondson's work, so this negative review is mainly for the narration. The narrator had many unusual speech mannerisms, such as inserting "um" before many syllables you're pronouncing words in atypical ways. Her voice also often became quite hoarse and gravelly, and was difficult to understand except when plugged into speakers. I found myself struggling to understand the narration so often that I frequently lost track of the content, and had to repeat portions of the book. Unfortunately I therefore cannot recommend this particular recording.

The content was excellent. Maybe a little too rich for an audiobook though. Also the narration was really distracting.

Lots of pausing between words and starting every word off with an mmm sound.

No Breakthrough Here

A reductionist approach to systems thinking just doesn't work. Pretty much all of the ideas in the book are spot on, but they are not necessarily new or presented in a new way. The stilted prose is too clinical to really allow you to connect to the material on an emotional level. The Storytelling of the author was too emotionally distant to really be compelling.

Worth the read

This is my second reading of this book. I realized several pages in that I'd read it before, but had no alternative available. A few chapters in and I realized that on second read, I was picking up on ideas is missed the forest time around. There is arguably little new or novel in this book when contrasted to the multitude of books on teams and learning organizations, but this is one of the first on the subjects that I'd recommend.

Amazing book for any marketing professional

This book reminds us all of the importance of challenging the status quo in business

Interesting, but appallingly badly read.

What did you like best about Eating the Big Fish? What did you like least?

An interesting perspective on marketing, or so it seemed. But I couldn't get beyond the first section (4 chapters), so I cannot say that for sure.

Worst: the narrator is abysmal. I've listened to quite a few audio books now, but never been prompted to write a review. And I'm sorry it's a negative one, but I felt I had to warn people.

1: He displays a shocking lack of understanding of what he is reading: "Equally innocent is a company in the UK...". The author doesn't mean that this company is just as innocent as others - the company is CALLED Innocent! As the narrator would know if he'd even read one chapter further on! So it should be "Equally, 'Innocent' is a company in the UK..."

2: He mangles many many pronunciations. Some are foreign (albeit common) phrases (such as laissez faire - not sure if that's an actual example, but it's the kind of thing) and others not - my jaw dropped at hearing him pronounce the island of Mauritius not as "Morishus" but as Maur-eet-e-us.

I can listen no more.

Cliche

A didn't find any real nuggets of information in here or find the book particularly engaging. "Find ambitious people" is the main theme. The rest is fluff.

Great book

I m not a regular reader but someone recommended this so I gave it a shot. But I am glad i get a chance to gain all the knowledge about business teams and structures.

Worth Reading

This is worth a read for those interested in team performance and management. The author uses the case study method of getting his main points across, which I found useful from a practical standpoint, yet distracting as I couldn't really relate to the specific case situations. Overall some good tips that I can use on a daily basis.

Great Business Teams is a great read!

Books have been written about breaking virtually every code imaginable from The Bible Code to The DaVinci Code. However, none of those books hold the promise of helping your organization crack the code to breakout performance - but Howard Guttman's Great Business Teams does! Guttman's premise is that great organizations are comprised of great teams, and regardless of the size or type of the organization, each of those teams operate via a code. The code is the key to maximize performance. Guttman identifies that code as the "horizontal organization" or a cultural construct that helps streamline decisions; champions collaboration; values individual accountability and teamwork; fosters speedy conflict resolution and rewards results. Make no mistake, this book is not a theoretical exercise written by some stuffy academician. The author distills his decades of experience as a business consultant into digestible, real-world examples of the horizontal model already in action across several of the world's most successful companies. He also explains what it takes to get there. While cracking Guttman's code may not be a panacea for every competitive need a company may have, it can help an organization deliver exceptional performance within a fierce marketplace, which is why Soundview highly recommends this book.

There was a good amount of stuff that I had to get through to obtain information that I needed. It did broaden my knowledge base on what questions to ask when buying a franchise as well as information I could pull from when obtaining my SBA Loan.

Not bad for basic

This beginner guide to considering a franchise was a pretty good read it to get the basics down of what to think about and how to methodically approach franchise ventures. The constant plugging of other marketers was really annoying though

Painful

What would have made Become a Franchise Owner! better?

The author made listening to this book more painful than owning a franchise could ever be... or maybe that was his objective. If getting through this audiobook was a true test of my ability to own a franchise, I failed miserably. The author has about 3 hours of introduction, and in that three hours, I think I obtained 2.5 mins of actual concrete information on franchise ownership. This book is filled with half a dozen hypothetical personal stories (yes, i know, i said the same thing) and approximatly zero cold hard facts. To top it off, the author's method of speaking to his audience is belittling, obnoxious and completely self righteous. I just couldn't take it anymore, I had to cut the cord after 4 hours of listing to useless antidotes and circling around the objective at hand, which was, just in case the author is reading this: To inform his audience on how to be a successful franchise owner! If I was the author, this book would have a 2 minute introduction and then jump into the facts, which should consist of: industry terms (jargon) used in by franchisers and franchise lawyers, and what do they mean? What does it mean to be a potential franchisee? When should you start preparing yourself for obtaining a franchise (6 months, 12 months, 24 months before the doors actually open), What steps should one take in order to prepare for being a franchisee (in numerical order)? What can be found in those contracts they give you? What are your options for an early escape if you decide you want to quit? How to make it to your ten year agreement when times get hard.

Soft skills do translate into hard dollars!

I would recommend this to anyone looking for ways to improve their team's (or even their own) performance. The first step to getting the ball rolling in maximizing performance and creativity is to recognize that there is an important metric to keep track of your "inner work life". This is essentially the song that you hear in your head as you think about your work and those you work with that amplifies or attenuates performance and creativity levels. In addition to the explanations of the methodology and descriptions of the work environments surveyed, there is some really practical advice for motivating your team and yourself to perform at the highest levels possible.

An interesting topic that was presented rather dryly with repeated statements. I think reading the book would have been better than trying to listen to it. consistent reference to the research process and frequent in the next chapter comments.

I found The Progress Principle to be profound in its insights to Managing/ Leading People, through a rich understanding development of Inner Work. I think this book is a must read for anyone who works or lives with people. Read the book. Better yet, Audible the book and have it read to you!!
