    Title: Do More Faster
Subtitle: TechStars Lessons to Accelerate Your Startup
    Author: Brad Feld, David Cohen
    Narrator: Sean Pratt
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-30-12
    Publisher: Gildan Media, LLC
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 467 votes
    Genres: Business, Career Skills
    Publisher's Summary:
It is a cold, hard fact of business life that most startups fail. Even many of those entrepreneurs who ultimately succeed have stories of personal challenges, unsuccessful companies, and difficulties along the way. The founders of TechStars, a mentorship-driven startup accelerator, have worked with entrepreneurs and companies over the past twenty-five years, and have seen a number of the same issues come up again and again.
In Do More Faster, the founders of TechStars identify the key issues that first-time entrepreneurs encounter, and offer proven advice from successful entrepreneurs who have worked with the TechStars program.
The authors organize the most critical issues into seven themes: Idea and Vision, People, Execution, Product, Fundraising, Legal and Structure, and Work and Life Balance. Many of the examples are personal experiences from the entrepreneurs themselves, integrated into a cohesive narrative - while at the same time able to stand on their own. Throughout the book, they debunk numerous myths about startups and reveal some surprising truths. They explain, for instance, that the core of a startup is not always a world-changing and earth-shattering idea - in fact, it is often the case that successful startups started out doing something else.
They also underscore the efficiency of execution: great entrepreneurs know how to synthesize data, make a decision about the path they are going down, and execute. And they offer some alternatives to traditional ways of raising money, while stressing that you shouldn't start with the assumption that you need to raise money.
Mastering the seven themes may not ensure success, but understanding the issues, reading the stories, and getting advice pertaining to these issues will increase your chances dramatically. And if nothing else, you'll realize that you aren't alone in facing these challenges.
    Critic Reviews:
"Remember when experience mattered? Thanks to this book, no matter how new to your field or how young or inexperienced you are, you can learn from people who have actually done it. Sure beats failing." (Seth Godin, author of Linchpin)

    Tips for Every Entrepreneur
The authors of this book run a well-respected program for high tech entrepreneurs, but even if you're a not a software person, the tips in this book about starting, running, and planning a business are extremely valuable. So many of the chapters stick with me months after I listened, especially "fail fast." Some tips are complex and structural for how to set up a business. Other tips are light such as "don't suck at e-mail." A great education.
An absolute MUST READ for every entrepreneur
Which character ??? as performed by Sean Pratt ??? was your favorite?
I think learned the most from Alex White's multiple stories. No wonder he features so prominently in the book--he's a really smart businessman.
    Any additional comments?
Everyone in the startup world and every entrepreneur regardless of whether you're in tech, bio, green, industry, or lemonade stands, should read this book. Each chapter is a lesson learned the hard way by a TechStars company founder.

    Absolutely must read!
    Any additional comments?
I never write reviews. I only read them. However, this time I have to write this down. This book is fabulous.I have read quite some books on negotiations and how the mind works. This one beats them all If you like pratical books and not so much academic analyses, this one would fit for you.I strongly recommend this book. Read this, and you will much better understand yourself and the people surrouding you. Have fun, Patrick from The Netherlands.

    Fun, but not in Audio...
This book has many fun problems, and even gives general strategies for solving such problems and reasonable advice about taking a tech interview, but it is really not effective in an audible format. It does have a PDF with drawings related to a bunch of the problems, but listening to the binary sequences of Gray codes or the numerous unique ways to paint a cube was both tedious and unenlightening. This would be quite a fun book in written form, but I could not recommend the audio version.
    Challenging as an audiobook
I agree with the reviewer who pointed out that, because it is largely a puzzle-book, it is significantly more challenging as an audiobook than it would be in written form. But I would also point out that if you can't handle this book as an audiobook, then you're probably not smart enough to work at Google. If you are considering this book because you really are contemplating a job interview, you will receive these or similar puzzles orally, not in written form. Don't be afraid to challenge yourself by doing something that's a little more difficult. The book is perfectly comprehensible, even without ever actually referring to the PDF at all.
    Uh no but.....Great GOOGLE Read
I was fascinated by this book. It has challenged me to think outside of the box and think about what I want to do for my next fourty years.

    Genres: Business, Career Skills
    Publisher's Summary:
David Novak learned long ago that you can't lead a great organization of any size without getting your people aligned, enthusiastic, and focused relentlessly on the mission. But how do you do that? There are countless leadership books, but how many will actually help a Taco Bell shift manager, a Fortune 500 CEO, a new entrepreneur, or anyone in between? Over his 15 years at Yum! Brands, Novak has developed a trademarked program he calls Taking People with You. He spends several weeks each year personally teaching it to thousands of managers around the world. He convinces them that they'll never make big things happen until they learn how to get people on their side. No skill in business is more important. And Yum!'s extraordinary success (at least 13 percent growth for each of the last nine years) proves his point. Novak knows that managers don't need leadership platitudes or business school theories. So he cuts right to the chase with a step-by- step guide to setting big goals, getting people to work together, blowing past your targets, and celebrating after you shock the skeptics. And then doing it again and again until consistent excellence becomes a core element of your culture. This audiobook has specific tools at the end of each chapter that will challenge you to reflect on how you're really doing on key aspects of leadership. And if you apply it, you'll immediately start to improve.
    Critic Reviews:
"This is the best, most practical hands-on book on leadership I've ever read. If you apply these principles, your career and the people you work with will flourish." (Dr. Bob Rotell, a sports psychologist)

    Publisher's Summary:
Based upon his weekly Harvard Business Review column (one of the most popular columns on HBR.com, receiving hundreds of thousands of unique page views a month), 18 Minutes clearly shows how busy people can cut through all the daily clutter and distractions and find a way to focus on those key items that are truly the top priorities in our lives.
Bregman works from the premise that the best way to combat constant and distracting interruptions is to create productive distractions of one's own. Based upon a series of short bite-sized chapters, his approach allows us to safely navigate through the constant chatter of emails, text messages, phone calls, and endless meetings that prevent us from focusing our time on those things that are truly important to us.
Mixing first-person insights along with unique case studies, Bregman sprinkles his charming audiobook with pathways that help guide us - pathways that can get us on the right trail in 18 minutes or less.

    Really great system

    Genres: Business, Career Skills
    Publisher's Summary:
Let's say you're about to hire somebody for a position in your company. Your corporation wants someone who's fearless, charismatic, and full of new ideas. Candidate X is charming, smart, and has all the right answers to your questions. Problem solved, right? Maybe not. Psychopaths may enter as rising stars and corporate saviors, but all too soon they're abusing the trust of colleagues, manipulating supervisors, and leaving the workplace in shambles. In Snakes in Suits, corporate psychologist Dr. Paul Babiak teams up with psychopathy expert Dr. Robert Hare to focus on the psychopath's role in modern corporations. They found that it's exactly the modern, open, more flexible corporate world that is the perfect breeding ground for these employees.
Snakes in Suits reveals psychopaths' secrets, introduces the ways in which they manipulate and deceive, and helps listeners see through their games. It is a compelling, frightening, and scientifically sound look at exactly how psychopaths work in the corporate environment, teaching you how they apply their "instinctive" manipulation techniques to business processes. It's a must listen for anyone in the business world, making you aware of the subtle warning signs of psychopathic behavior---before it's too late.
    Critic Reviews:
"Clear and complete, this is a handy overview for managers and HR, with enough "self-defense" techniques to help coworkers from getting bit." (
    Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
What if theres a Psychopath in the Next Cubicle?
In 2011, Simon Baron-Cohen published The Science of Evil: On empathy and the origins of cruelty. That book discusses psychopathy in detail, and the organic reasons someone may lack empathy. Autism is probably the most common reason, but psychopathy - which Baron-Cohen convincingly argues can arise from congenital or traumatic reasons - is the scariest. Autistics generally dont blend in, and often lack the social skills to progress in a corporation. Psychopaths can fit in, and often do. Worse, psychopaths, unlike autistics, may enjoy hurting people.
Dr. Robert D. Hare and Dr. Paul Babiaks 2006 Snakes in Suits: When Psychopaths Go to Work provides tools to identify psychopaths in the workplace. The common mythology is that psychopaths are compulsive serial killers, but that is definitely not the case. Bernie Madoff, the mastermind of the biggest Ponzi scheme uncovered in US history (in 2008), meets Hare and Babiaks definition of a psychopath. Madoff ruined so many lives, including his own sons (Mark Madoff committed suicide in 2010), but he has never been accused of even throwing a punch - much less pulling a trigger.
Hare and Babiak provide guidance on how to deal with psychopaths. The best recommendation is to just get away from the psychopath - as you would from any dangerous snake. Thats not always possible - the economy is terrible, a move may not be possible, and the psychopath may be your childs parent - or your own parent.
Babiak is actually listed as the first author of Snakes in Suits, but Hare is actually one of the pioneers who identified psychopathy as a mental disorder.

This Chinese treatise on war was written by Sun Tzu in the 6th century B.C. Each one of the 13 chapters is devoted to a different aspect of warfare, making it the definitive work on military strategies and tactics of its time. Studied by generals from Napoleon to Rommel, it is still one of the most influential works on the subject and is required reading in most military academies around the world. Although it was meant to be a practical guide to warfare in the age of chariots, this seminal work on the philosophy of successful leadership is as applicable to contemporary business as it is to war, and has become increasingly popular among today's corporate and political leaders.

    Where is the substance?
What would have made The Barefoot Executive better?
    Some substance
Would you ever listen to anything by Carrie Wilkerson again?
    No
    Any additional comments?
I have listened to many audiobooks and enjoyed nearly all of them. After reading the other reviews on the site, I thought it sounded like a good listen. The book is very repetitive and has nothing of any real substance.I got through 2/3 of the book and could not take any more.In the first chapter carrie sets up her credentials - she runs many successful businesses from home, lost over 100 pounds, has 4 kids, overcame depression etc - which is good. But she keeps repeating these same facts again and again during the book about how amazing she is for overcoming these obstacles. There are no real deep insights about anything. The whole message of the book seemed to be - if you have an interest in something you can start an internet business advising on the topic, and if you work hard you will build a successful business.I am not disputing that this is true but there has to be more meat in a 6 hour book.It is supposed to be a book for people starting a business or people already running a business, but I think only newcomers to business will get anything out of it.This may sound like a harsh review, but maybe I am just not who the book was aimed at.
    Worse book Ever
What disappointed you about The Barefoot Executive?
    The title is completely misleading.
It was sophomoric.Self-centered. It was simplistic. Non-specific. Definitely not executive material.
Has The Barefoot Executive turned you off from other books in this genre?
    yes
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Carrie Wilkerson?
I wouldn't have published this book. it is more of a pamphlet that belongs in the lobby of a christian motivation center
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Barefoot Executive?
all the faith-based assertions. the simplicity and assumptions
    Any additional comments?
It is a useless book for anyone who has been or wants to be in the business world. I can not imagine it being useful to anyone, whether you are starting out as a network marketer, an entrepreneur or a small partnership.
Worth reading but not what I expected...
I wouldn't call it the ultimate guide to anything other than Carrie Wilkerson self promotion. However I do think it was worth the money. This review may seem harsh but keep reading to the end to understand my point.
The book is not a straight road-map from business idea to creation to profit. She presents ideas and concepts in a non-linear fashion and often repeats herself. The repetition of ideas is very common in self-help/biz development books so I expected it.

    Critic Reviews:
This book offers powerful and practical direction from two business leaders that will change your personal and professional lives. (Mike Sabbatis, president and CEO, CCH)
    Members Reviews:
    Worth it
If you are trying to change your firm and want to start thinking outside the box, this reading is a great place to start.
Not professional quality audio. Not audible book friendly
I am an avid follower of both Michael Gerber and Darren Root because I respect both of them and I've learned a lot from them in business and accounting, respectively. I listen to audio books on a daily basis, But this is one of the worst recording paces and vocal pitch levels I've experienced. After 1.5x speed, it's a jumbled, mumbled mess. Gerber is bearable at 2x sometimes, but Darren is very hard to listen to at any speed. It's not a natural feeling slow or fast. I find myself adjusting my EQ and speed often just to get through it and understand them.
    Spot On Advice!
Would you listen to The E-Myth Accountant again? Why?
Yes, because, in the same way that basketball players don't go to practice once and win games, and church goers don't just go to one Sunday and then have the bible completely memorized, good principles should be constantly reviewed and re-visited, and this book is something all accountants and business owners should re-visit regularly to keep their ships on coarse.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The Foreman in the jungle. :-) I can relate to workload he realistically sees in front of him, and how it can be very different from the owners distant high level view of the whole picture. I love this parable as it reminds me to remember to zoom out and see the whole picture and remember to align myself with the overall mission.
What about Michael E. Gerber and M. Darren Root s performance did you like?
    Engaging & Stellar. :-)
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Inspired.
    Any additional comments?
Can't wait to apply more of these principles to the business I work for.
    Narration was ok
Michael does great with narrating. It would've been better to cast a more passionate narrator for M Darren Roots writing. He put me to sleep.
Inspiring and challenging call to action....
An inspiring and challenging call to action for accountants who are stuck being technicians. There's hope.
