    Author: Gary Rivlin

    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
For most people, the Great Crash of 2008 has meant troubling times. Not so for those in the flourishing poverty industry, for whom the economic woes spell an opportunity to expand and grow. These mercenary entrepreneurs have taken advantage of an era of deregulation to devise high-priced products to sell to the credit-hungry working poor, including the instant tax refund and the payday loan. In the process they've created an industry larger than the casino business and have proved that pawnbrokers and check cashers, if they dream big enough, can grow very rich off those with thin wallets.
Broke, USA is Gary Rivlin's riveting report from the economic fringes. From the annual meeting of the national check cashers association in Las Vegas to a tour of the foreclosure-riddled neighborhoods of Dayton, Ohio, here is a subprime Fast Food Nation featuring an unforgettable cast of characters and memorable scenes. Rivlin profiles players like a former small-town Tennessee debt collector whose business offering cash advances to the working poor has earned him a net worth in the hundreds of millions, and legendary Wall Street dealmaker Sandy Weill, who rode a subprime loan business into control of the nation's largest bank. Rivlin parallels their stories with the tale of those committed souls fighting back against the major corporations, chain franchises, and newly hatched enterprises that fleece the country's hardworking waitresses, warehouse workers, and mall clerks.
Timely, shocking, and powerful, Broke, USA offers a much-needed look at why our country is in a financial mess and gives a voice to the millions of ordinary Americans left devastated in the wake of the economic collapse.
    Critic Reviews:
"A timely, important, and deeply disturbing look at the cycle of debt of the nation's most vulnerable." (Publishers Weekly)
"This is a powerful analysis, detailing how the financial sector has come to its current state of crisis and including personal stories of some among the millions of working Americans who have been exploited along the way." (Booklist)

    A Good Read
This book is about all the business that were built around payday loans, pawn shop loans, credit cards, bounced check fees, subprime mortgages and instant tax refunds. The author interviews numerous business owners and borrowers to get insights into how prevalent, lucrative and damaging these businesses are.
Although written to be a book of what-not-to-do it may well become a guide for those who want to make big money quickly. From the interviews it was readily apparent the market demand and margins were through the roof and a number of the now millionaires were average Joes who hung out a shingle, plowed their earning into opening more stores and made a fortune.
A good part of the book revolves around a few key figures that have been fighting the industry and the small inroads they have made against behemoth money makers that have been purchased by large multi-national banks or had successful IPOs.
Sadly I was a part of this
Most of this has happened to me, and I was a part of the stuff. I was a business partner and VP for Tobie Mckenzie during this time.

    Publisher's Summary:
Between 1995 and 2007, the Republic of Ireland was the worldwide model of successful adaptation to economic globalisation. The success story was phenomenal: a doubling of the workforce; a massive growth in exports; a GDP that was substantially above the EU average. Ireland became the world's largest exporter of software and manufactured the world's supply of Viagra. The factors that made it possible for Ireland to become prosperous - progressive social change, solidarity, major state investment in education, and the critical role of the EU - were largely ignored as too sharply at odds with the dominant free-market ideology. The Irish boom was shaped instead into a simplistic moral tale of the little country that discovered low taxes and small government and prospered as a result.
There were two big problems. Ireland acquired a hyper-capitalist economy on the back of a corrupt, dysfunctional political system. And the business class saw the influx of wealth as an opportunity to make money out of property. Aided by corrupt planning and funded by poorly regulated banks, an unsustainable property-led boom gradually consumed the Celtic Tiger. This is, as Fintan O'Toole writes, "a good old-fashioned jeremiad about the bastards who got us into this mess". It is an entertaining, passionate story of one of the most ignominious economic reversals in recent history.
    Critic Reviews:
OToole...has produced a coruscating polemic against the cronyism and corruption that in his view helped to fuel the boom. [H]is highly readable book is a salutary reminder that cronyism, light regulation and loose ethics can be a deadly combination. (Financial Times)
    Members Reviews:
Never Trust An Irish Bank Again
In this audiobook, the author goes into the political, economic and financial regulatory history of the Republic of Ireland (the "Celtic Tiger" lauded in the 90s). You'll meet shady politicians, land developers, and more, some lineages stretching as far back as the 60s and 70s, and come away finding how deeply rooted and tacitly accepted these corrupt practices are.
One chapter goes into how all the big companies from America, Italy and around the globe domiciled themselves in Dublin to take advantage of tax loopholes so large, you could hide Bermuda in them. Admittedly, some of the reinsurance schemes and paper companies are a bit sophisticated to follow, but the despicable greed comes through loud and clear in the narration.
I may never trust another Irish bank again after learning all of this. I used to own shares of AIB but not anymore (fortunately I sold before the meltdown), and never again. The book will help you understand the financial reform and economic austerity that the Republic of Ireland has to go through today to pick-up the pieces of the wreckage described up through 2008 in the book, and why democratic though it may be, the electorate simply continue to accept these practices as long as their local politicians bring home the bacon.
The one detraction I felt from the audiobook were the quantity of numbers being thrown out there to the listener in the narrative (particularly in the earlier part of the book). The author moves arbitrarily from one year to another comparing numbers: GDPs, tax revenue, per capita income, real estate development measures, etc.

    Title: Whos Your City?
Subtitle: How the Creative Economy Is Making Where to Live the Most Important Decision of Your Life
    Author: Richard Florida
    Narrator: Mark Boyett
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 52 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-02-10
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 42 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
All places are not created equal. In this groundbreaking book, Richard Florida shows that where we live is increasingly a crucial factor in our lives, one that fundamentally affects our professional and personal prospects. As well as explaining why place matters now more than ever, Who's Your City? provides indispensable tools to help you choose the right place for you.
It's a cliche of the information age that globalization has made place irrelevant, that one can telecommute as effectively from New Zealand as New York. But it's not true, Richard Florida argues, relying on 20 years of innovative research in urban studies, creativity, and demographic trends. In fact, as new units of economic growth called mega-regions become increasingly specialized, the world is becoming more and more spiky divided between flourishing clusters of talent, education and competitiveness, and moribund valleys. All these places have personalities, Richard Florida explains in the second half of Who's Your City?, and happiness depends on finding the city in which you can balance your personal and career goals to thrive. More people than ever before now have the opportunity to choose where to live, but at different points in our lives we need different kinds of places, he points out. What a couple of recent college graduates want from their city isn't necessarily what a retiree is looking for. You have to find the place that suits you best: a boho-burb neighborhood isn't likely to be the best fit for patio man.
Sparkling with Richard Florida's signature intellectual originality, Who's Your City? moves from insights to studies to personal anecdotes, to surprising data on the difference aesthetics makes to people's sense of place. A perceptive and transformative book, it is both a brilliant exploration of the fundamental importance of place and an essential guide to making what may be the most important decision of your life.
    Critic Reviews:
"The book is a superb treatise on the location paradox: the idea that as the world becomes more mobile, the more decisive location becomes...We learn why San Francisco is the best city for young singles; why Washington D.C. is the best place to raise kids; and why New York City is one of the top spots for retirees. Something to look forward to!" (BusinessWeek)
    Members Reviews:
    Not worth reading
This book offers nothing original and left me feeling frustrated that I stayed with it.
    Disappointing
The narration is a little fast, but the content is what I found disappointing. The author has noticed patterns of various kinds of people who end up living around cities. Late in the book he brings in some ideas about psychological types. Nowhere does he help the reader decide what type we might be. Also he loses steam before he gets to seniors. Maybe he will write something else to clear all this up. Things is what they is. If you're going to find a job, a house, nice schools, etc. you're going to have to do the research and visit the places. Meanwhile, take your sweetie out to dinner and then think about spending money on this book. You can learn almost everything on the website anyway.

    Title: Sonic Boom
    Subtitle: Globalization at Mach Speed
    Author: Gregg Easterbrook

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 27 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-02-10
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 24 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Signs that the recession is about to end are here. So what comes next? Growth will resume. But economic uncertainty will worsen, making what comes next not just a boom but a nerve-shattering Sonic Boom. Gregg Easterbrook, who "writes nothing that is not brilliant" (Chicago Tribune), is a fount of unconventional wisdom, and over time, he is almost always proven right. Throughout 2008 and 2009, as the global economy was contracting and the experts were panicking, Easterbrook worked on a book saying prosperity is about to make its next big leap. Will he be right again?
Sonic Boom: Globalization at Mach Speed presents three basic insights. First, if you don't like globalization, brace yourself, because globalization has barely started. Easterbrook contends the world is about to become far more globally linked. Second, the next wave of global change will be primarily positive: economic prosperity, knowledge, and freedom will increase more in the next 50 years than in all of human history to this point. But before you celebrate, Easterbrook further warns that the next phase of global change is going to drive us crazy. Most things will be good for most people but nothing will seem certain for anyone.
Each Sonic Boom chapter is based on examples of cities around the world, in the United States, Europe, Russia, China, and South America, that represent a significant Sonic Boom trend.
With a terrific sense of humor, pitch-perfect reporting and clear, elegant prose, Easterbrook explains why economic recovery is on the horizon but why the next phase of global change will also give everyone one hell of a headache. Forbes calls Easterbrook "the best writer on complex topics in the United States" and Sonic Boom will show you why.
    Critic Reviews:
"A book that is both a pleasure to read and a valuable corrective to the gloom that currently envelopes us.... Easterbrook tells his story well, with social portraiture, striking facts and sharp anecdotes aimed at puncturing common misconceptions about economic change.... As for the economic crisis that has just nearly ruined us, Mr. Easterbrook reminds us, in one of the many apercus that enliven Sonic Boom, that capitalism is the only economic system in history that is rendered stronger by its own instability." (The Wall Street Journal)
    Members Reviews:
    The Ed Tech Sonic Boom
Greg Easterbrook is making two big arguments in Sonic Boom: Globalization at Mach Speed.
Future Prosperity: Due to a combination of global trade, the spread of information technology, and the movement toward representative democracies, the 21st century will usher in unprecedented levels and diffusion of global prosperity.
Current Anxiety: The growth of prosperity will probably fail to make us happy. Instead, the ascendance of entrepreneurial capitalism and the rise of knowledge work at the expense of institutions, stability and security will make us all more anxious.
This seems to be a fair description of how life within the higher ed world will unfold as well.

    Way too basic.
What would have made The Lowdown: Doing Business in Mexico better?
Much more detailed information about how to speak and dress and...I don't know because I don't have the information. I live here in Mexico and I know that I offend people sometimes with my plain speech and at times I still don't know why. There are some just plain untruths in this book. Yes it is proper to dress "formally" but women dress quite outrageously at times. Even high-level business women. I think there has to be a middle ground for a woman from another country so that people don't think she's too stiff. I think it's a very hard line to walk and would like more specific help.
What was most disappointing about Christopher Wests story?
Yes, I want to find a book that speaks much more in depth about the question of business relationships in Mexico.
What about Trevor White and Lorelei King s performance did you like?
The performance was fine, very easy to understand and listen.

    Publisher's Summary:
The most valued workers today are what the economist Richard Florida calls the Creative Class, skilled individuals ranging from money managers to makeup artists, software programmers to steadycam operators, who are in constant demand around the world.
Florida's best-selling The Rise of the Creative Class identified these workers as the source of economic revitalization in American cities. In that book, he shows that investment in technology and a civic culture of tolerance (most often marked by the presence of a large gay community) are the key ingredients to attracting and maintaining a local creative class. In The Flight of the Creative Class, Florida expands his research to cover the global competition to attract the Creative Class.
The United States was, up until 2002, the unparalleled leader in creative capital. But several key events - the Bush administrations emphasis on smokestack industries, heightened security concerns after 9/11, and the growing cultural divide between conservatives and liberals - have put the U.S. at a substantial disadvantage.
    Critic Reviews:
"Florida remains an astute observer of what makes economic communities tick, and he's sure to generate just as much public debate on this new twist on brain drain." (Publishers Weekly)
Policy makers and independent professionals alike must quickly take Floridas argument aboard--and, just as quickly, act. (Tom Peters)
    Members Reviews:
I' ve found the negative reviews to be perplexing
I' ve found the negative reviews to be perplexing- such vitriolic diatribes and very little critical thought evident- I wonder if the book was actually read by these reviewers. This is a really good book that deserves to be read and discussed. Florida doesn't pretend to have all of the answers. People with pulses and a modicum of creativity seem to understand the premises he puts forth. For those looking to blame someone, anyone, for the economic equity gap evident in this country, Florida is an easy target. Folks, don't kill the messenger, he may have something to teach you. The cultural insularity and puritanical values perpetuated in current public policy have long term consequences. Wake up!
    Richard's assumptions........again
On pp 9-10, Richard casually mentions government regulation as one of the reasons for USA's 11th place and dropping ranking for creative business environs, citing Sweden Canada Australia, Ireland as ahead of us.....he consistently glosses over the fact that the creative class as he created it is assumed to be enlightened coastal liberals, who are notorious for creating these regulations on the very creative businesses he champions, and, or course, on every other non-creative buinsess who suffer alike.....which of course stifles all creativity ...like agriculture which he avoids because everybody knows farmers are neither creative nor liberal, nor coastal (Richard's assumptions) ......and the aforementioned countries, after decades of their own self stifling liberalism, are in liberal-political -recovery......the US is just now falling into that abyss....recovery possibly just starting.

    Publisher's Summary:
Six months after its American introduction in 1985, the Yugo was a punch line; within a year, it was a staple of late-night comedy. By 2000, NPR's Car Talk declared it "the worst car of the millennium." And for most Americans that's where the story begins and ends. Hardly.
The short, unhappy life of the car, the men who built it, the men who imported it, and the decade that embraced and discarded it is rollicking and astounding, and it is one of the greatest untold business-cum-morality tales of the 1980s. Mix one rabid entrepreneur, several thousand "good" communists, a willing U.S. State Department, the shortsighted Detroit auto industry, and improvident bankers, shake vigorously, and youve got The Yugo: The Rise and Fall of the Worst Car in History.
Brilliantly re-creating the amazing confluence of events that produced the Yugo, Yugoslav expert Jason Vuic uproariously tells the story of the car that became an international joke: The American CEO who happens upon a Yugo right when his company needs to find a new import or go under. A State Department eager to aid Yugoslavia's nonaligned communist government. Zastava Automobiles, which overhauls its factory to produce an American-ready Yugo in six months. And a hole left by Detroit in the cheap subcompact market that creates a race to the bottom that leaves the Yugo...at the bottom.

    Flim Flam at its Best
This is a wonderfully entertaining and humorous story about the introduction of the little Yugo - the worse car ever - to the US. Individuals interested in business history will find this book interesting. Car buffs may also enjoy the book, though those expecting technical specs, road tests, and other information will be disappointed. I actually found the sections dealing with Subaru, early Honda introductions, and - in particular - the involvement of Malcolm Bricklin et al very informative.
In sum, this book is well written and the reading of Synnestvedt is very good. Unless you are a motorhead, this might well be an interesting diversion for you. Thank you Jason Vuic for a great job.
    Better Than The Car!
What a fun read! If you like business, cars or "Americana"---pop culture, you'll enjoy this book. It's got it all...I'm not a "car" guy but really enjoyed this book. A lot of fun.
Oddly, I don't know what to make of the central character. Crook? Unlucky? Both?
Read it and then draw your own conclusions---then Google the guy! He's got a NEW venture in cars...

What made the experience of listening to The Yugo the most enjoyable?

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English

    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
He's one of America's most capable, canny, candid, and independent financial experts. Now David M. Walker sounds a call to action. Comeback America is a tough-minded, innovative, inspiring guide to help us avoid the approaching economic abyss and put the country back on track again.
As comptroller general of the United States and head of the Government Accountability Office (GAO) - "the nation's top auditor" - Walker warned Congress and the administration as the federal surplus became a giant deficit under George W. Bush. As president and CEO of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, he now works full-time to raise public awareness regarding mounting debt burdens being imposed on future generations. Comeback America is his crucial manifesto, a way for President Obama to end out-of-control government spending and reform our tax, retirement, health care, defense, and other systems - before it's too late.
Walker believes that by 2030, absent significant reforms to current government programs and policies, federal taxes could double from current levels, meaning less money and poorer education for kids, which will hurt families along with our nation's economic strength and position in the world. If our foreign creditors - such as China - decide to buy fewer of our Treasury bonds, interest rates will rise and cars and homes will become less affordable.
But it doesn't have to be that way. Comeback America shows how we can return to our founding principles of fiscal responsibility and stewardship for future generations. The book includes bold ideas to control spending, save Social Security, dramatically alter Medicare, and simplify the tax code - all taking into account the Obama administration's current efforts, which receive never-before-published assessments, both complimentary and critical.
    Critic Reviews:
"David Walker shows us how to regain fiscal sanity and why, if we don't, we're at risk of bequeathing a lower standard of living to our children and becoming a second-rate power. Every American should read this book, because Walker gives us specific solutions, and shows there is still hope." (Former U.S. Senator Bill Bradley)
"Please read this book by David Walker. No one has worked harder, been armed with more facts, written more clearly and been more dedicated to the mission of restoring confidence in our fiscal affairs and trust in government." (Paul Volcker, Chairman of the Economic Recovery Advisory Board and Former Chairman of the Federal Reserve)
"Dave Walker has lifted the hood on the federal government, diagnosed the problems, and provided a number of sensible suggestions to help restore America's greatness. Read this book if you care about America's future." (Ross Perot)

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
In November, GM CEO Rick Wagoner appeared before Congress to ask for $25 billion to bail out the struggling Big Three automakers. To critics like Thomas Freidman and Mitt Romney, it was a sign that the American auto industry should be led out to pasture; if the Japanese are better at making cars, they said, then we should let them do it. To defenders, the loss of the country's largest manufacturing sector would be an incomprehensible disaster. Nearly every day, the debate rages on the op-ed pages. Billions of dollars and millions of jobs hang in the balance.
In Why GM Matters, William Holstein goes deep inside GM to show what's really happening at the country's most iconic corporation. Where critics say that GM has sat on its hands while the market changed, Holstein demonstrates that GM has already radically retooled its entire operation, from manufacturing and cost structure to design. Where pundits say we'd be better off without GM, he shows how inextricably linked GM and the nation's economy still are: The country's largest private buyer of IT, the world's largest buyer of steel, the holder of pensions for 780,000 Americans, GM accounts for a full 1 percent of our country's GDP. A dollar spent on GM has profoundly different consequences from a dollar spent on Toyota.
Following a diverse cast of characters--from Rick Wagoner, the controversial CEO, to design director Bob Boniface, to Linda Flowers, a team leader on the line in Kansas City--Holstein examines the state of GM's health and builds a persuasive argument that GM is essential to our nation's well-being and, with the right economic climate, ready to compete with Toyota as one of the biggest global automakers.
    Critic Reviews:
"At a time when GM and the domestic auto industry are in acute crisis, this book makes sense of what has happened--and what should happen next. Bill Holstein is an extremely knowledgeable and perceptive journalist, and his book is a must-read for anyone who cares about the future of the American auto industry." (Fortune)

    Boring
I found this book boring and tedious to listen to. It sounds more like something written by GM's PR department than an insightful analysis. Most of the folks that the author builds are up are now gone. Yes, it's interesting to learn how sophisticated GM's international collaboration is, but the arguments supporting the title are both simplistic and unconvincing - and they drone on.
Very technical and well layed out very persuasive
Excellent narrative. GM is America and more Americans need to see that. spot on sir
