    Title: The Lawyer Bubble
    Subtitle: A Profession in Crisis
    Author: Steven J. Harper
    Narrator: Walter Dixon
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-03-13
    Publisher: Gildan Media, LLC
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 27 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
A noble profession is facing its defining moment. From law schools to the prestigious firms that represent the pinnacle of a legal career, a crisis is unfolding. News headlines tell part of the story - the growing oversupply of new lawyers, widespread career dissatisfaction, and spectacular implosions of preeminent law firms. Yet eager hordes of bright young people continue to step over each other as they seek jobs with high rates of depression, life-consuming hours, and little assurance of financial stability. The Great Recession has only worsened these trends, but correction is possible and, now, imperative.
In The Lawyer Bubble, Steven J. Harper reveals how a culture of short-term thinking has blinded some of the nations finest minds to the long-run implications of their actions. Law school deans have ceded independent judgment to flawed U.S. News & World Report rankings criteria in the quest to maximize immediate results. Senior partners in the nations large law firms have focused on current profits to enhance American Lawyer rankings and individual wealth at great cost to their institutions. Yet, wiser decisions - being honest about the legal job market, revisiting the financial incentives currently driving bad behavior, eliminating the billable hour model, and more - can take the profession to a better place.
A devastating indictment of the greed, shortsightedness, and dishonesty that now permeate the legal profession, this insider account is essential reading for anyone who wants to know how things went so wrong and how the profession can right itself once again.
    Critic Reviews:
"[Harper] burns his bridges in this scathing indictment of law schools and big law firms. His insights and admonitions are consistently on point." (Publishers Weekly)
"The Lawyer Bubble is an important book, carefully researched, cogently argued and compellingly written. It demonstrates how two honorable callings - legal education and the practice of law - have become, far too often, unscrupulous rackets. (Scott Turow, author of Presumed Innocent and other novels)

    Title: Understanding Global Trade
    Author: Elhanan Helpman
    Narrator: Kevin Charles Minatrea
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 46 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-09-13
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 11 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Global trade is of vital interest to citizens as well as policymakers, yet it is widely misunderstood. This compact exposition of the market forces underlying international commerce addresses both of these concerned groups, as well as the needs of students and scholars. Although it contains no equations, it is almost mathematical in its elegance, precision, and power of expression.
Understanding Global Trade provides a thorough explanation of what shapes the international organization of production and distribution and the resulting trade flows. It reviews the evolution of knowledge in this field from Adam Smith to today as a process of theoretical modeling, accumulation of new empirical data, and then revision of analytical frameworks in response to evidence and changing circumstances. It explains the sources of comparative advantage and how they lead countries to specialize in making products which they then sell to other countries. While foreign trade contributes to the overall welfare of a nation, it also creates winners and losers, and Helpman describes mechanisms through which trade affects a country's income distribution.
The book provides a clear and original account of the revolutions in trade theory of the 1980s and the most recent decade. It shows how scholars shifted the analysis of trade flows from the sectoral level to the business-firm level, to elucidate the growing roles of multinational corporations, offshoring, and outsourcing in the international division of labor. Helpman's explanation of the latest research findings is essential for an understanding of world affairs.
The book is published by Harvard University Press.
    Critic Reviews:
"Anyone interested in understanding the nuances of globalization should read this book." (Kenneth Rogoff, co-author of This Time is Different)
"Elhanan Helpman's Understanding Global Trade is a masterpiece of non-mathematical, fully understandable, but still rigorous, exposition." (Stanley Fischer, Governor, Bank of Israel)
"Elhanan Helpman is among the foremost trade theorists of his generation. In this splendid book, he demonstrates that he can also write successfully for the public." (Jagdish Bhagwati, author of In Defense of Globalization)

    Excellent
The book was excellent, gave a broad view of trade. The author carefully simplified trade and the rudiments
    Dull
    Any additional comments?
Unfortunately, this book didn't translate to the audiobook format well in my opinion. Far too dry. This is the sort of book you need to see diagrams and numbers for.

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 23 votes

    Publisher's Summary:
A fascinating, research-based look at the impact of social media on businesses and consumers around the world, and what's in store for the future.
Social Media. You've heard the term, even if you don't use the tools. But just how big has social media become? Social media has officially surpassed pornography as the top activity on the Internet. People would rather give up their e-mail than their social network. It is so powerful that it is causing a macro shift in the way we live and conduct business. Socialnomics charts this shift from the forefront.
Brands can now be strengthened or destroyed by the use of social media. Online networking sites are being used as giant, free focus groups. Advertising is less effective at influencing consumers than the opinions of their peers. If you aren't using social media in your business strategy, you are already behind your competition.
Socialnomics is an essential book for anyone who wants to understand the implications of social media, and how businesses can tap the power of social media to increase their sales, cut their marketing costs, and reach consumers directly.

New insights for investors and business people looking to create wealth in the turbulent post-crisis world...
In a no holds barred expose of the 2008 financial meltdown from the inside, Ziad K. Abdelnour argues that the political and financial elites have done nothing to fix the structural problems and instead have worsened the situation. By creating more market bubbles, they are actually waging a war on the most productive members of society.
For investors, business people, and entrepreneurs that need to navigate the troubled geopolitical waters of the post-crisis world, Abdelnour offers several solutions, including looking at the world anew and understanding that the federal government's primary objective is to promote the creation of an environment conducive to the creation of wealth not job creation, not bailouts, not subsidies, not expansion of the federal bureaucracy, and not providing lifetime support to those who choose not to take advantage of the innumerable opportunities that exist in this nation for them to create a better, more productive life for themselves.
The author is President and CEO of Blackhawk Partners, Inc., a private family office that has two major lines of business, private equity investments and advisory services, and physical commodities trading Compelling and persuasive, Economic Warfare reveals that wealth can be created in the new, post-crisis world, but investors need to understand that the rules of the game have changed.

Reads like a Fox News opinion segment
For a book on such a serious topic with potential with a lot of substance, I was disappointed by how full of invective and ad hominem attacks this book contained. He has some good points throughout the book but his approach to arguing his points undermines the book and will turn off anyone not already convinced of his point of view.

    Publisher's Summary:
The good, the bad, and the scary of Washington's attempt to reform Wall Street.
The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act is Washington's response to America's call for a new regulatory framework for the 21st century. In The New Financial Deal, author David Skeel offers an in-depth look at the new financial reforms and questions whether they will bring more effective regulation of contemporary finance or simply cement the partnership between government and the largest banks. This book:
To understand what American financial life is likely to look like in five, 10, or 20 years, and how regulators will respond to the next crisis, we need to understand Dodd-Frank. The New Financial Deal provides that understanding, breaking down both what Dodd-Frank says and what it all means.

A fine tour of this law
I am satisfied this author has had a good look at this law, as well as its surrounding players, history and influences. He makes a very accessible summary of all these things. I don't have to agree with every opinion, to acknowledge he has done interested persons a service. A person who followed the whole story systematically in the press, and did some good long thinking, might arrive at similar knowledge. But I am happy to pay Mr Skeel to do so much of the heavy lifting. Of course, the story is unfolding as I write this, not least in the substantial additional regulations under consideration.

    Convincing
Ok, done! Very convincing book. He's a really good writer. One of the things i thought he did really well is to use great metaphors to hammer home his points. For example, he is comparing The Great Disruption to WWII in that people in the US kept denying it was coming our way, but when it did finally come, we were able to mobilize in some unbelievably fast and powerful ways to win that war. He thinks we can do the same in this even bigger battle to save our planet. I hope he's right!
So far my prediction from below is WRONG. I guess I'm about 1/3 of the way through, and it is very well researched and pretty earth shattering, literally. Although it is repetitive and could be shorter, the author really does an excellent job of explaining his theory and supporting it in detail. This is not light weight social commentary! I'm not sure that it would have as much of an impact if it were written as bullet points. It is such a depressing theory that one really needs to be hit over the head with it repeatedly to jog one out of denial. Basically, we are in deep DOO DOO. He is trying to put a positive spin on it, but... well, I'm depressed by it :(
Prediction: I've read only the sample from Amazon so far. My guess is that the sample would have been enough and this is one of those books that should have been a pamphlet or an essay. Oh well; I need to at least check out the full version for my BOOK CLUB. It'll be like homework :( I'm not really looking forward to it.
Great insights lacking acceptance of human nature
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would attempt to bring the factual in line with a worldview that is accepting of human nature and our lack of foresight.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The narrator was excellent and seemed genuine.
What about Antony Fergusons performance did you like?
I felt like he was the writer and was very taken in by his performance.
Did The Great Disruption inspire you to do anything?
Not really. I feel like it laid a foundation for understanding the climate crisis and will lead to something I will do in the future.
His solution is standardized world laws
Paul and I want the same things: More responsible use of our resources. But Paul seems to want us to be in compliance with standardized world laws. He never used the phrase New World Order, but it sure sounds like it to me.
I, on the other hand, would rather employ freedom and personal responsibility. After all, where would we go if we found standardized world laws oppressive?
It seemed that he said the same thing over and over. Maybe this is because I already understand the problems he is addressing. It could be cut way down, I think.
One last thing The reader pronounces nuclear as nuke - u - lar which hurts credibility.

    Title: The Sellout
Subtitle: How Three Decades of Wall Street Greed and Government Mismanagement Destroyed the Global Financial System
    Author: Charles Gasparino
    Narrator: Thomas M. Perkins
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 21 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-07-11
    Publisher: HarperCollins
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 59 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
The ongoing tumult in financial markets and the global economy began when some of our most esteemed financial institutions, our government, and even average citizens abdicated their collective responsibilities, eventually selling out investors and selling off the American Dream itself.
From critically acclaimed investigative journalist and CNBC personality Charles Gasparino comes a sweeping examination of the most volatile, anxiety-ridden era in our nation's socioeconomic history. The winner of the 2009 Investigative Reporters and Editors Award for Books, The Sellout traces the recent implosion of the financial-services business back to its roots in the late 1970s, when Wall Street embraced a new business model predicated on enormous risk. Gasparino reveals a startling trail of culpability - from the government bureaucrats who crafted housing policies to the Wall Street firms that underwrote and invested in risky debt, to the mortgage sellers who indiscriminately handed out loans, and finally to the homeowners who thought they could afford mansions on blue-collar wages.
    Critic Reviews:
"The most comprehensive anecdotal account to date of the crisis.... Gasparino cuts his way through Wall Street rhetoric and in the process uncovers in considerable detail how blind profit-making ambition led to the destruction of the markets." (New York Review of Books)
    Members Reviews:
It takes effort to distill the "big picture"
In my opinion the book spends too much time profiling the personalities of those running the banks. No doubt their risk-taking and competitive personalities contributed to the near global meltdown. But that's just part of it. I wish there was more explanation of the system as a whole, more explanation of processes and terminology. The same concepts were repeatedly referred to in different terms. I found that confusing. The book would have been better with wider story arcs and wider perspective, and less focus on the day to day actions of individual players.
    Spellbinding!
Would you listen to The Sellout again? Why?
Excellent detail and structure laid out as a story, very well written.
What about Thomas M. Perkinss performance did you like?
    Great voice and enunciation.
    Nails on a chalkboard
Literally, every third sentence had a mispronounced word. It was absolutely infuriating. It's pronounced Saul-oh-man Brothers, not Salmon Brothers!
Comprehensive History of the Securities Collapse
What made the experience of listening to The Sellout the most enjoyable?
The author was thorough in his research tracing mortgage backed securities, which many of us might assume to be recent inventions, back to their beginnings several decades ago up and the invention of 'junk bonds' created to buy out, break up and sell off highly successful companies purely for profit. The author also describes the personalities of traders as compulsive gamblers and the myriad factors that led up to the great fiscal collapse requiring the major banks and investment banks need to be bailed out or sold out.
What did you like best about this story?
It's a real history with amazing personalities and a culture of greed so pervasive that it's amazing it lasted as long as it did.
If you could give The Sellout a new subtitle, what would it be?
    or..

    Title: The High-beta Rich
Subtitle: How the Manic Wealthy Will Take Us to the Next Boom, Bubble, and Bust
    Author: Robert Frank
    Narrator: Paul Costanzo
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 6 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-01-11
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 31 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
The rich are not only getting richer, they are becoming more dangerous. Starting in the early 1980s the top one percent broke away from the rest of us to become the most unstable force in the economy. An elite that had once been the flat line on the American income charts - models of financial propriety - suddenly set off on a wild ride of economic binges.
Not only do they control more than a third of the country's wealth, their increasing vulnerability to the booms and busts of the stock market wreak havoc on our consumer economy, financial markets, communities, employment opportunities, and government finances.
Robert Frank's insightful analysis provides the disturbing big picture of high-beta wealth. His vivid storytelling brings you inside the mortgaged mansions, blown-up balance sheets, repossessed Bentleys and Gulfstreams, and wrecked lives and relationships:
Robert Franks stories and analysis brilliantly show that the emergence of the high-beta rich is not just a high-class problem for the rich. High-beta wealth has national consequences: Americas dependence on the rich + great volatility among the rich = a more volatile America.
Cycles of wealth are now much faster and more extreme. The rich are a new Potemkin Plutocracy and the important lessons and consequences are brought to light of day in this engrossing book.
    Critic Reviews:
"The High-Beta Rich vividly illustrates how the wealthy and those they employ have become increasingly tied to the vicissitudes of the stock market and the macroeconomy. It is a cautionary tale for all." (Steven Neil Kaplan)
    Members Reviews:
Sell to the Classes, Join the Masses
This books is full of lots of interesting riches to rags stories, but it also explains why it's better to have a middle class driven economy than a richistan driven economy. Politicians need to quit worshipping the rich and read this book, and then they need to pass a law that caps all political contributions at $500 or less.
    high beta read
Robert Frank is the wealth reporter for the WSJ, where he writes the wealth blog, and is also the author of the 2008 book Richistan. Reading The High-Beta Rich is good fun, as who doesn't like to hear about former billionaires reduced to cleaning their own toilets and shopping at Marshalls. Frank hangs The High-Beta Rich on both stories and data, and he is a good story-teller.
The underlying data story is the degree to which the income, and therefore spending, of the wealthy fluctuates. Today's rich are different from the previous wealthy class, as most of the recent big fortunes were made by way of financial manipulation as opposed to the traditional route of building a company over many years (or through inheritance). The formerly mega-wealthy that Frank profiles made their millions (or billions) by borrowing large sums of money, and as often as not investing this borrowed money in overpriced real estate development schemes. As quickly as the sub-prime bubble burst, they were forced to lay-off the armies of butlers and private chefs that they had accumulated during the financial and housing bubble. The fallout of the rapid declines in the wealth of many previous top-earners is not however limited to the yacht and mansion set, as many municipalities (read Aspen) and employees (read most of us), have grown to depend on the tax dollars and spending of the rich.

    Publisher's Summary:
The unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Boomerang: The Meltdown Tour, Michael Lewis' brilliant tragi-comic romp across post-crash Europe. Read by the actor Dylan Baker.
Having made the U.S. financial crisis comprehensible for us all in The Big Short, Michael Lewis realised that he hadn't begun to get grips with the full story. How exactly had it come to hit the rest of the world in the face too? Just how broke are we really? Boomerang is a tragi-comic romp across Europe, in which Lewis gives full vent to his storytelling genius. The cheap credit that rolled across the planet between 2002 and 2008 was more than a simple financial phenomenon: it was temptation, offering entire societies the chance to reveal aspects of their characters they could not normally afford to indulge.
Icelanders wanted to stop fishing and become investment bankers. The Greeks wanted to turn their country into a piñata stuffed with cash and allow as many citizens as possible to take a whack. The Irish wanted to stop being Irish. The Germans wanted to be even more German. Michael Lewis's investigation of bubbles across Europe is brilliantly, sadly hilarious. He also turns a merciless eye on America: on California, the epicentre of world consumption, where we see that a final reckoning awaits the most avaricious of nations too. This is the ultimate book of our times. It's time to brace ourselves for impact. And, with Michael Lewis, to laugh out loud while we're doing it.
    Critic Reviews:
"Fascinating... the book could not be more timely...a sharp-edged narrative that leaves readers with a visceral understanding of the fiscal recklessness that lies behind today's headlines." (Michiko Kakutani, New York Times)
"Lewis is the finest storyteller of our generation." (Malcolm Gladwell)
"He is so good everyone else may as well pack up." (Evening Standard)
    Members Reviews:
Very good until the final part
There are absolutely several laugh-out-loud moments in this book. The best part is, without doubt, Michael Lewis's (ML) description of Iceland and its travails as the "investment banking nation". When he describes the difficulties of Alcoa, engaged in opening an Aluminium smelting plant in Iceland, first having to certify that the development site is not inhabited by "the hidden people" (aka Elves) -- it is indescribable. But underlying this is ML's usual depth and curiosity. His description of how Iceland developed its fishing industry into a vast money-making enterprise is succinct and thought-provoking.
It is ML's ability to be acerbic, but not nasty that is really at the core of his talent. The Icelanders acted like amazing idiots, seeing themselves as being somehow amazingly talented and capable, when in fact they were more like eleven year-olds given the keys to Daddy's Cadillac. Yet at the end of his tale-telling, one feels both sympathy for the Icelanders, and a slightly rueful sense that maybe we have all been Icelanders a little bit this past decade.
Then you get to the end of the book, and things take a bit of a nose-dive. ML is quite weak when he comes to ascribing causes to what happened in the GFC. His line throughout the book was that the GFC resulted from people being given a great deal of money that they could spend "with nobody looking". That doesn't ring true to me.

Where does Radically Simple Accounting rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?
If you are a small business owner you "must" listen to this book. I am in sales and marketing and I absolutely hate accounting until I listened to this book. It's simple, straight forward, and fun to listen to the author explain accounting. I wish this book was available two years ago.
    Finally, clarity in plain English.
Madeline brings clarity to general accounting practices. She takes the time not only to explain in very understandable terms how it's done, but why do it that way. Madeline will also give the historical origins which helped me to align my thinking so I became more comfortable with why, "that's just the way it's done". Wish I had received this information years ago. Now my books and their reports are cleaner and I understand much more.
    Thank you for this book!!
If you could sum up Radically Simple Accounting in three words, what would they be?
    Informative, Comprehensive, and Entertaining
What was one of the most memorable moments of Radically Simple Accounting?
I purchased this audio book through Audible and I LOVE It. Ive been studying bookkeeping and accounting for the past few years on my own, and finally decided to attend classes at our local community college. Im a single mom and didnt know how I was going to do it, but somehow its working out and is filling in a lot of the holes that were in my learning. Every day on my way to work, I listen to this audio book and I find it so inspiring and comforting.
