Length: 3 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-22-14
    Publisher: Ade World LLC

    Publisher's Summary:
If time is money, then being lean is both. Thanks to mega retailers worldwide, lean principles have rapidly spread to a variety of different manufacturers, such as consumer foods, apparel and food/beverage. Over the past few years, these retailers have dramatically changed how they do business in order to stay competitive in the marketplace. How products are ordered, how inventory is moved throughout distribution centers and barcodes vs. RFID technology for inventory management have all been taken into consideration in order to work as swiftly and efficiently as possible. While lean thinking has been rapidly expanding amongst large manufacturers and retailers, there are still a lot of companies that have hardly implemented any lean concepts. At the end of the day lean is about adding value for customers; but how can companies do that while also reaping in benefits for themselves?

  • Growing Up Fast Audiobook by Jascha Kaykas-Wolff, Kevin Fann

    Title: Growing Up Fast
Subtitle: How New Agile Practices Can Move Marketing and Innovation past the Old Business Stalemates
    Author: Jascha Kaykas-Wolff, Kevin Fann
    Narrator: Caitlin Graham
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-03-14
    Publisher: Jascha Kaykas-Wolff
Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Growing Up Fast is a practical audiobook about how to implement an agile process in modern business to create the necessary collaboration between marketing and innovation for business success. The first half of the audiobook covers the philosophical underpinnings of complementary opposites in nature, human interaction, and the workplace. It surveys business management over the last 100 years and shows how we've come to the "Agile Age", which is not about big ideas Mad Men-style, but lots of little ideas to test and try.
The second half of the audiobook discusses the mindsets and tools required for success in agile work, and examples are given throughout the text in the form of case studies on companies like Netflix, 3M, Microsoft, Domino's Pizza, and Dell Computer.
The introduction and conclusion of the audiobook set up the metaphor of the audiobook's title, to personify the current impasse between big regulation government and total free market capitalism. Agile is posed as a third option between the Mom and Dad's battle between over-planning and wild speculation, concern for the future and obsession with "what worked" in the past - as both occupy our resources without agile process or priorities for the innovations we need going forward in society.
Agile is portrayed as an inquisitive, experimental, brilliant child who still lives above the garage at her parents' house - and it's time for her to move out.

    Publisher's Summary:
A detailed look at how economists shaped the world, and how the legacy continues.
Trillion Dollar Economists explores the prize-winning ideas that have shaped business decisions, business models, and government policies, expanding the popular idea of the economist's role from one of forecaster to one of innovator. Written by the former Director of Economic Research at Bloomberg Government, the Kauffman Foundation and the Brookings Institution, this audiobook describes the ways in which economists have helped shape the world - in some cases, dramatically enough to be recognized with a Nobel Prize or Clark Medal. Detailed discussion of how economists think about the world and the pace of future innovation leads to an examination of the role, importance, and limits of the market, and economists' contributions to business and policy in the past, present, and future.
Few economists actually forecast the economy's performance. Instead, the bulk of the profession is concerned with how markets work, and how they can be made more efficient and productive to generate the things people want to buy for a better life. Full of interviews with leading economists and industry leaders, Trillion Dollar Economists showcases the innovations that have built modern business and policy. Listeners will:

    Publisher's Summary:
The Great Fragmentation: And Why the Future of All Business is Small is a business survival manifesto for the technology revolution.
As the world moves from the industrial era to the digital age, power is shifting and fragmenting. Power is no longer about might and ownership; power in a digital world is about access. Existing businesses need to understand this shift and position themselves to survive and thrive in an environment where entrepreneurs and start-ups enabled by access to technology are genuine threats.
Author Steve Sammartino is widely regarded as a thought leader on the subject of technology and business, and helps companies transition from industrial-era thinking to the mindset and processes required to compete in today's digital marketplace.
The Great Fragmentation shows how technological changes such as Big Data, gamification, crowdfunding, Bitcoin, 3D printing, social media, mashup culture and artisanal production will forever change business and the way we live our lives.
Weaving together insights from business, technology and anthropology, The Great Fragmentation provides both corporations and entrepreneurs with a playbook for the future of work, life and business in the digital era.

Feels like the 2nd edition of the World is Flat
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The book is an OK read.
What was most disappointing about Steve Sammartinos story?
The book would be an interesting read for a novice, but if you already read the World Is Flat, Wikinomics and a few other books that talked how the world and people are becoming more interconnected, how it's easier to collaborate and share, you won't see much new in this book.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of David Thorpe?
The narrator was excellent, but the content was so thin that I had to listen to at at x3 speed (normally I stay with x2) to not fall asleep.
Impressed! Ready to listen & read again.
Couldn't stop listening to Steve Sammartino's great insights and futurist predictions on business. I will be downloading the kindle version to read and listen again, but this time taking notes ;-) Excellent work Mr. Sammartino!
    Insulting and horribly unbalanced
Couldnt take anymore after five chapters.
    Quick summary in three bullets...
    - Evil, greedy industrialists dictate the lives of the ignorant masses that dont know any better
    - Altruistic digitalists (I made up) unleash all of mankinds creative energies suppressed for centuries with no desire for money.
    - No middle ground
For any balanced person you will prefer some middle ground by appreciating the higher standard of living you have through standardization (Home Depot/Walmart) while at the same time being able to enjoy the pleasures of human creativity (Etsy). Unless you enjoy extremely unbalanced and numerous over the top statements, dont waste your time with this book.
    Just great
Just great! Bunch of deep and futuristic ideas which inspired me to take some small steps towards my own creative business.
    Get ready for the future
If you could sum up The Great Fragmentation in three words, what would they be?
Quite an insightful book and great for visionaries to peer into what is potentially to come in the near future.

Length: 6 hrs and 58 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-20-14
    Publisher: Women's Investment Network, LLC
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Put Your Money Where Your Heart Is offers a sensible, easy-to-follow yet powerful set of investing strategies for the would-be investor - from the complete novice to those with experience. Natalie Pace urges the reader to begin with an area of investing that they care about or know about, learning how to get rich by putting their money where their passions lie. Her method is based on a three-part investment recipe and a six-step "Buy My Own Island Plan", all presented in an informative and engaging style.
In 2000, Natalie was a single mother about to lose her home because she couldn't afford to pay her property taxes. Natalie maneuvered her way out of poverty and up above the ranks of Harvard-educated MBAs to become the number-one ranked stock picker on Wall Street. She shows us, through anecdotes and carefully outlined investing strategies, that making the transformation to a life of financial freedom and happiness is easier than one might think. Members Reviews:
Great For The Beginner and Checkup For The Experienced
For openers, the book is not only about investing but also about living a good and balanced life. For that alone it deserved kudos, but there is much more.
A number of other reviewers question how Natalie's "simplistic" approach can be valid when the investor must compete in a market filled with the best and the brightest ( or at least the most well compensated). Thankfully the market has given us the answer in that the wizards of Wall Street are capable of group think, greed and folly that would not pass the smell test among common people.
The next time you hear someone in a press conference or congressional hearing saying "nobody saw this coming" know that it is simply not true. Andrew Lahde predicted the financial meltdown from the collapse of the housing market to the financial crash with amazing accuracy (an built a highly successful fund), Prof. Cauley at UCLA repeatedly showed why the housing market had to crash in presentations to the financial world for a number of years and as we saw from the hearings one analyst took only a few hours to understand that Madoff was a fraud but could not get the SEC to act despite years of trying and overwhelming evidence.
Ms Pace's approach to a simple rating of companies produces results. Were I editing her work I would place even greater emphasis on the evaluation of the company culture and ethics. Is there strong, visionary leadership or a series of slash and burn execs armed with options and parachutes. How would Sun Tzu evaluate the management team? What would John Wooden say?
I was stunned to receive a note from Harvard that they had managed to loose 1/3 of their endowment, before the recent market selloff.

Some of these factors are well known, but others can creep up on management teams and go almost unnoticed until its too late.

  • When Rice Shakes the World Audiobook by Milo Hamilton

Title: When Rice Shakes the World
Subtitle: The Importance of the First Grain to World Economic & Political Stability
    Author: Milo Hamilton
    Narrator: Milo Hamilton
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-30-14
    Publisher: Advantage Media Group
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
For millennia, rice has sealed the fate of dynasties and kingdoms in Asia, but has only remained a cultural curiosity to Western financial markets.
Today the food and agricultural markets of India and China are in motion. The history of agricultural change is littered with hunger, poverty, and failure. Will that curse pass itself on to this Asian generation? Or is there a brighter future ahead of us?
Now China is rapidly becoming the wealthiest country in the world. China's water shortages and its rice market are fault lines that finger their way beneath the surface of the world economy. These fault lines are sending out tremors that could shake the entire world in the next few years.
Rice is a little grain, but a big deal in Asia. The Great Wall of China is cemented together with sticky rice. It uses up to 70 percent of the water resources of China. Rice's 200,000,000 farms feed 3,000,000,000 people. Yet it is grown on an area the size of France.
Rice is the social cement of Asia and the rice farms of Asia may crack that ancient cement. This audiobook explains the ancient yet curiously modern story of rice that binds feudal farms to the new super cities across China.
At the center of this story is the rice farmer, whose backbreaking labor feeds millions. In the next 15 years, millions of farmers must transition from landless serfs into modern business people skilled in all the technologies and versed in market risk. The rice world lies on the dark side of this digital Earth. But that world is turning rapidly toward the light.
    Members Reviews:
Perhaps worth two hours of your time
This is not a very informative book. The author spends most of the book on what he would like to see but very little on the economics and trading of rice. The one thing I did learn as a novice who wants to learn more about trading agricultural commodities is that rice is the last think you want to trade. It's an extremely shallow market that is manipulated by several governments in Asia.
    Very informative
Mr. Hamilton writes from a perspective few people in the world can match because of his extensive experience in the rice business .
His premise that when the U.S. exports grain to China, that it is really exporting water is a fascinating concept .
Also, the need for a viable rice futures market in Asia and free trade in the world rice markets as outlined in the book is well explained in a compelling manner .
Rice is important to the security of the world
When I received the book, I read the entire book that day. Milo in my opinion gives a glance into the future. Everyone should listen to Milo as he has a terrific incite when it comes to rice and what it means to countries and their security and to the future security of the world. I highly recommend this book.
    Must read
Great incite to international grain markets, exchanges, property rights and water usage. Would highly recommend it for anyone involved in rice farm ownership, production and marketing.

    Publisher's Summary:
What happens when a renowned river guide teams up with the CEO of one of the largest - and least Earth-friendly - corporations in the world? Nothing less than a green business revolution reveals Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and bestselling author Edward Humes in his arresting new book, Force of Nature: The Unlikely Story of Wal-Mart's Green Revolution.
Humes, author of Eco Barons, tells the inside story of the little-known and unlikely partnership between former Wal-Mart CEO H. Lee Scott and white water expert-turned Blu Skye sustainability consultant Jib Ellison, and their struggle to redefine what it means to be green in the world of big business. Their efforts transformed a small project initially intended to insulate Wal-Mart from environmental criticism into a massive sustainability makeover, which now has snowballed beyond the retailer to influence whole industries, from apparel to dairy to banking.
Now their fresh take on sustainability is empowering a virtual second industrial revolution based on a simple truth: that the clean, green, efficient, less-wasteful, less polluting way of doing business can also be the most profitable way of doing business.

    Way more than greenwashing...
Have a look at this book before you call Walmart's sustainability efforts "greenwashing." You'll be surprised at how much has been done (and 5 more years of work have been completed since the most recent data this book has to work with.)
Force of Nature: Don't Miss Reading This
If are a citizen of planet earth - this is a must-read book. It is not easy reading, but it is the best read I have encountered in some time. It is full of facts and history about Walmart and other Green companies initiatives that, while not easy consumption are essential to the story for me. Buy this book to get a full education about the eco-industry, today's sustainable business culture, and how it is being led by the #1 company in the world. The information contained is very up to the minute for 2011, and the facts are foot-noted so you will find dozens of other references that can be used in research or presentations.
    A DIFFERENT VIEW OF WALMART
I have tried to avoid ever setting foot in Walmart for all the reasons Sam Walton used to make him a very rich person. This book has shown how such a company, under proper leadership, can make a positive impact on the world.
Granted, they did most of the early things because they could save money by doing them, but they did them and it was a win-win result. I was particularly impressed with the chapter on milk and the initiatives Walmart has taken to improve the industry and also, lower its carbon footprint.
Ihave urged all my friends to read this book and also, Eco Barons by the same author.
Lots of details upon how Walmart reduced its environmental impact drastically
Very nice the way is it narrated (story style). It goes step by step upon walmart's approach to reducing its impact on the environment all the way. Lots of details on how they reduced general waste, CO2 emissions, energy consumption and of course gained profit while doing it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
This is the insiders view of Sustainability at Wal-mart
Edward Humes must know some people at Walmart because he details the complete history of the sustainability movement within the world's largest retailer.

Having listened to the authors' last two books, I did not expect any really serious stuff and find it overall an enjoyable listen. However, the abrupt ending of the book just a bit after 5 hours surprised me as I was still expecting more interesting stuff to unfold. I suppose some statement about its actual length should be in the book description to prevent any disappointment.
