    Great book, very wise advise.
I loved hearing this book, the content is great - even better than Winning in my opinion- and the narrator is just perfect even for a foreigner like me.
    Great advice
This book contains tons of amazing insights and advice for many at many levels.
    The content is first class.
However, it's just not the same without Jack's voice.
    useful advice
more aimed at CEOs or board level
but I can't imagine those that really need to read this will do so
    interesting
I found the book insightful, shame he didnot use all of the principles at GE
Will be reading again in a few weeks!
This tome is so dense in life-truths and gems, that it warrants at least a couple of re-reads.
The secrets of being successful in business, at work and as a human being told in a very down-to-earth way by two of the most successful people of our time.
    Loved it.

Length: 6 hrs and 45 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-09-15
    Publisher: Random House
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 13 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Britain's leading guru looks to the future. Charles Handy is one of the giants of contemporary thought. His books on management - including Understanding Organizations and Gods of Management - have changed the way we view business. His work on broader issues and trends - such as Beyond Certainty - has changed the way we view society.
In The Second Curve, Handy builds on a life's work to glimpse into the future and see what challenges and opportunities lie ahead. He looks at current trends in capitalism and asks whether it is a sustainable system. He explores the dangers of a society built on credit. He challenges the myth that remorseless growth is essential. He even asks whether we should rethink our roles in life as students, parents, workers, and voters and what the aims of an ideal society of the future should be.
Provocative and thoughtful as ever, he sets out the questions we all need to ask ourselves - and points us in the direction of some of the answers.

Amazing views from an amazing man
Handy is a pleasure to read and/or listen to. He is provocative without being judgmental. It's like sitting on your grandfathers lap and listening to him teach through telling stories about days past.
    Full of insights
Great listen. Intelligent and witty arguments. I have over a hundred audio books in my library but this is the first review I've ever written. That's how much I liked it.
life changing, if you can see it coming.
Such a great book, I have listened many times now and take something new away each time.
    Thank you Charles!
    Thought provoking and life changing
A fabulous manifesto for the future and a great stimulus for personal transformation. Loved it
    A great business philosopher
I've been reading Handy for 40 years, from his first book to this. He has always has an uncanny ability to tap into emerging zeitgeist not be offering "solutions" but by framing great questions. Once we escape the cages of our own preconceptions, the answers are accessible to us. A great addition to the library, and like all his work, repays rereading

In this audiobook Tim Knight provides an exhaustive analysis of financial market behavior prior, during, and following tumultuous events since 1600.

  • Where Keynes Went Wrong Audiobook by Hunter Lewis

    Title: Where Keynes Went Wrong
Subtitle: And Why World Governments Keep Creating Inflation, Bubbles, and Busts
    Author: Hunter Lewis
    Narrator: Bruce Lorie
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 56 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-20-15
    Publisher: Axios Press
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 21 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
In responding to the financial crash of 2008, both the Bush administration and the Obama administration have relied on prescriptions developed by John Maynard Keynes, the most important economist since Marx. But should we be relying on Keynes? What did Keynes actually say? Did he make his case? Hunter Lewis concludes that he did not. If Keynes was wrong then so are the economic policies of virtually all world governments today.
    Members Reviews:
If you think socialism has influenced world governments too much, then you need to read this.
A must read if you are tired of destructive policies being implemented around the world by governments that present themselves as capitalists and later blame the market for its âlimitationsâ.
This books presents the nonsense and contradictions of Keynes âeconomicâ theories in a clear and structured fashion.
For many years Iâve believed that many of the horrible economic policies implemented by governments around the world where part of the socialist inheritance the world has absorbed. But much to my surprise, these are all part of the Keynesian doctrine!
Although itâs only at the end where there is a brief reference, Keynesian policies have contributed to keep and increase poverty around the world.
Excellent organization and very easy reading.
Self Required Reading for the Informed Electorate
This is an excellent book for those interested in macroeconomics, markets, politics, business, and the overall philosophies that interconnect them all. In other words, if you were interested enough to look at the reviews, then purchase the book. Hunter Lewis has done a masterful job of compiling information that all elected officials should be required to read, and information that would dramatically change politics around the world if voting citizens of the United States understood. The author's point - counterpoint style of refuting Keynes' "General Theory..." (and the policies that have evolved around his name) is somewhat duplicative throughout the book, and does detract from the general flow of the book; but it does accomplish the author's secondary goal of examining Keynsian theories in a logical manner. Hunter Lewis not only explains the risks Keynsian policies pose to economies, but also points that the effect of Keynsian policy (and the Government sponsored enterprises it creates) are even more dangerous for maintaining our democratic republic and liberty.
    Someone who GETS it.
The author does an outstanding job of thoroughly discrediting John Maynard Keynes and uses the information presented to explain the current state of the economy and how Keynesian thinking and policies are what got us into this mess. If the government truly wanted to follow Keynes, as some of them mistakenly think they are, they would reverse the money flow from the Fed into the market. The original idea Keynes had was for deficit spending to "get the economy going" , but in better economic times the governments were supposed to pull the money back out of the system. In the end, it doesn't really make a difference if they truly followed Keynes, the policies just don't work. Very readable, interesting, extremely relevant and useful.
    A well organized book ... Point ... Counterpoint ...
Lewis' work is easy to read and follow.

Title: The Looting Machine: Warlords, Tycoons, Smugglers and the Systematic Theft of Africa's Wealth
    Author: Tom Burgis
    Narrator: Dugald Bruce Lockhart
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-26-15
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 12 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
A shocking investigative journey into the way the resource trade wreaks havoc on Africa, The Looting Machine explores the dark underbelly of the global economy.
Africa: the world's poorest continent and arguably its richest. While accounting for just 2 percent of global GDP, it is home to 15 percent of the planet's crude oil, 40 percent of its gold, and 80 percent of its platinum. A third of the Earth's mineral deposits lie beneath its soil. But far from being a salvation, this buried treasure has been a curse.
The Looting Machine takes you on a gripping and shocking journey through anonymous boardrooms and glittering headquarters to expose a new form of financialized colonialism. Africa's booming growth is driven by the voracious hunger for natural resources from rapidly emerging economies such as China.
But in the shadows a network of traders, bankers, and corporate raiders has sprung up to grease the palms of venal local political elites. What is happening in Africa's resource states is systematic looting. In country after country across the continent, the resource industry is tearing at the very fabric of society. But, like its victims, the beneficiaries of this looting machine have names.
For six years Tom Burgis has been on a mission to expose corruption and give voice to the millions of Africans who suffer the consequences of living under this curse. Combining deep reporting with an action-packed narrative, he travels to the heart of Africa's resource states, meeting a warlord in Nigeria's oil-soaked Niger Delta, and crossing a warzone to reach a remote mineral mine in Eastern Congo.
The result is a blistering investigation that throws a completely fresh light on the workings of the global economy and will make you think twice about what goes into the mobile phone in your pocket and the tank of your car.
    Critic Reviews:
"An excellent book. Despite Africa's impressive economic 5% growth rate, Tom Burgis ensures that we don't stop wondering who does what in Africa and how we are all party to what Western 'investors' are up to. The postcolonial corruption and rape of African resource to the benefit of Western consumption is still alive and horribly well." (Jon Snow)
"Tom Burgis has managed to uncover a system responsible for the wholesale looting of Africa's mineral resources for the benefit of oligarchic and state interests around the world. French, Chinese, Americans, Russians, Israelis, Brits, Brazilians, not to mention small but rapacious African elites are all involved in pillaging Africa's natural resources to line their pockets with unbelievable sums. Burgis, a gifted young journalist with the Financial Times, has tracked down all these characters across some of Africa's most dangerous hotspots and beyond in Asia, Europe, and America. The reporting is vivid, eye-popping, and even at times very funny." (Misha Glenny, author of McMafia)

    Publisher's Summary:
Although popular culture certainly has its favorites in terms of rockstar companies, some of the rising giants within the business world don't always get the credit or airtime they deserve. There are a number of recent growth engine companies that have challenged conventional paths to success and forged their own destinies through unique and innovative techniques that have resulted in huge success within a shockingly short time. This book pulls back the curtain on some of today's rising business stars and reveals what essential tactics they've used to reach such impressive heights.

This book includes a bonus material: How Google Did It, a best-selling book.
    Members Reviews:
Lacks any real detail or analysis
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
First, this book isn't really a 54 minutes as the narration is very slow. That being said even at 1.5x, or 2x, your time is probably better spent elsewhere as the book is very light on details.
The 5 companies "discussed" get 6-8 (slowly narrated) minutes each. The companies are:
    Lululemon
    Alibaba
    Keurig
    Tesla
    Fuhu
These are fascinating companies that are definitely growth engines, but I feel rather than getting a case study or any analysis, all this book does is give you a very short intro to who these companies are.
    Any additional comments?
I've given 2 stars, because if you ignore the speed, the narration is good, and if you ignore the lack of detail the intro to these companies isn't bad.

  • The Next Economic Disaster Audiobook by Richard Vague

    Title: The Next Economic Disaster
Subtitle: Why It's Coming and How to Avoid It
    Author: Richard Vague
    Narrator: Charles Kabala
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 15 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-29-15
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 9 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Current debates about economic crises typically focus on the role that public debt and debt-fueled public spending play in economic growth. This illuminating and provocative work shows that it is the rapid expansion of private rather than public debt that constrains growth and sparks economic calamities like the financial crisis of 2008.
Relying on the findings of a team of economists, credit expert Richard Vague argues that the Great Depression of the 1930s, the economic collapse of the past decade, and many other sharp downturns around the world were all preceded by a spike in privately-held debt. Vague presents an algorithm for predicting crises and argues that China may soon face disaster. Since American debt levels have not declined significantly since 2008, Vague believes that economic growth in the United States will suffer unless banks embrace a policy of debt restructuring.
All informed citizens, but especially those interested in economic policy and history, will want to contend with Vague's distressing arguments and evidence.
The book is published by University of Pennsylvania Press.
    Critic Reviews:
"Richard Vague's voice should not be ignored. His emphasis on the dangers of rising private household debt is a key both to the last crisis and the next." (Ed Luce,
    Financial Times)
"[Y]ou need to read this book. Packed with insightful analysis, it is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand how we got onto the road to financial ruin-and how to avoid the next disaster." (Megan McArdle,
    Bloomberg View)
"If you want to understand why financial crises occur, read The Next Economic Disaster." (Liaquat Ahamed, author of
Lords of Finance: The Bankers Who Broke the World)
    Members Reviews:
Maybe I'm not getting the point fully, but ...
... I'm under the impression that the solution here is basically a few accounting adjustments. If it was that straightforward, were all these bubbles and crashes, lo these last 400 years, a lot simpler than we thought? I admire the author's good intentions. The explanations of the problems at the outset were also good. Maybe it's just me -- but I can't see how this would prevent people engineering new ways to fall into the same ditch again, as they seem prone to do.
I'm more inclined to go with what is being tried -- macro-prudential regulation to be sure systemically important firms are identified and watched, and forced to have a more sound financial and risk management structure. And if they do crash, a fast-track way to get control of them and do a resolution. That is, if it isn't all undone in the next couple years, which I think, politically, is quite possible. Then it's off the races again. But maybe it would be anyway, people being so inclined to run toward that ditch, and find loopholes to get there, the short-term incentives being what they are. And I don't see how this proposal changes those incentives.
    Great concise listen
After listening to the thesis that private debt caused the crashes of history. It makes total sense. The solution seems oversimplified, but I'm sure would help to have the banks have more skin the game.
