    Narrator: Michael Piotrasch
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 21 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-10-16
    Publisher: Ant Hive Media
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
This is a summary of Robert B. Reich's Saving Capitalism: For the Many, Not the Few.
This presents a myth-shattering breakdown of how the economic system that helped make America so strong is now failing us and what it will take to fix it. Perhaps no one is better acquainted with the intersection of economics and politics than Robert B. Reich, and now he reveals how power and influence have created a new American oligarchy, a shrinking middle class, and the greatest income inequality and wealth disparity in 80 years. He makes clear how centrally problematic our veneration of the "free market" is and how it has masked the power of moneyed interests to tilt the market to their benefit.
Reich exposes the falsehoods that have been bolstered by the corruption of our democracy by huge corporations and the revolving door between Washington and Wall Street: that all workers are paid what they're "worth", that a higher minimum wage equals fewer jobs, and that corporations must serve shareholders before employees. He shows that the critical choices ahead are not about the size of government but about who government is for: that we must choose not between a free market and "big" government but between a market organized for broadly based prosperity and one designed to deliver the most gains to the top.
Ever the pragmatist, ever the optimist, Reich sees hope for reversing our slide toward inequality and diminished opportunity when we shore up the countervailing power of everyone else. Passionate yet practical, sweeping yet exactingly argued, Saving Capitalism is a revelatory indictment of our economic status quo and an empowering call to civic action.
This summary is aimed at those who want to capture the gist of the book but don't have the time to listen to the full book. You get the main summary along with all of the benefits and lessons the actual book has to offer.

    Title: Auctions
Subtitle: The MIT Press Essential Knowledge Series
Author: Harry J. Paarsch, Timothy P. Hubbard
    Narrator: Sean Pratt
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 43 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-29-16
    Publisher: Gildan Media, LLC
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Although it is among the oldest of market institutions, the auction is ubiquitous in today's economy, used for everything from government procurement to selling advertising on the Internet to course assignment at MIT's Sloan School. Yet beyond the small number of economists who specialize in the subject, few people understand how auctions really work.
This concise, accessible, and engaging book explains both the theory and the practice of auctions. It describes the main auction formats and pricing rules, develops a simple model to explain bidder behavior, and provides a range of real-world examples.
The authors explain what constitutes an auction and how auctions can be modeled as games of asymmetric information - that is, games in which some players know something that other players do not. They characterize behavior in these strategic situations and maintain a focus on the real world by illustrating their discussions with examples that include not just auctions held by eBay and Sotheby's but those used by Google, the US Treasury, TaskRabbit, and charities. Listeners will begin to understand how economists model auctions and how the rules of the auction shape bidder incentives. They will appreciate the role auctions play in our modern economy and understand why these selling mechanisms are so resilient.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 30 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-17-15
    Publisher: Brook Forest Voices
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
This newly launched report argues that development policies based on new insights into how people actually think and make decisions will help governments and civil society more readily tackle such challenges as increasing productivity, breaking the cycle of poverty from one generation to the next, and acting on climate change.
Drawing from a wealth of research that suggests ways of diagnosing and solving the psychological and social constraints to development, the World Development Report identifies new policy tools that complement standard economic instruments. To inspire a fresh look at how development work is done, the report outlines three principles of human decision making: thinking automatically, thinking socially, and thinking with mental models. Much of human thinking is automatic and depends on whatever comes to mind most effortlessly. People are deeply social and are influenced by social networks and norms. Finally, most people do not invent new concepts; rather they use mental models drawn from their societies and shared histories to interpret their experiences.
Because the factors affecting decisions are local and contextual, it is hard to predict in advance which aspects of program design and implementation will drive the choices people will make. Interventions therefore need to take account of the insights found in this report and be designed through a "learning by doing" approach. This report applies the three principles to multiple areas, including early childhood development, productivity, household finance, health and health care, climate change, and more.

    Title: The Money Makers
Subtitle: How Roosevelt and Keynes Ended the Depression, Defeated Fascism, and Secured a Prosperous Peace

    Narrator: Walter Dixon
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 21 mins

    Release date: 11-04-15
    Publisher: Gildan Media, LLC
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 19 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Shortly after arriving in the White House in early 1933, Franklin Roosevelt took the United States off the gold standard. His opponents thought his decision unwise at best and ruinous at worst. But they could not have been more wrong. With The Money Makers, Eric Rauchway tells the absorbing story of how FDR and his advisors pulled the levers of monetary policy to save the domestic economy and propel the United States to unprecedented prosperity and superpower status. Drawing on the ideas of the brilliant British economist John Maynard Keynes, among others, Roosevelt created the conditions for recovery from the Great Depression, deploying economic policy to fight the biggest threat then facing the nation: deflation. Throughout the 1930s, he also had one eye on the increasingly dire situation in Europe. In order to defeat Hitler, Roosevelt turned again to monetary policy, sending dollars abroad to prop up the faltering economies of Britain and, beginning in 1941, the Soviet Union.
FDR's fight against economic depression and his fight against fascism were indistinguishable. As Rauchway writes, "Roosevelt wanted to ensure more than business recovery; he wanted to restore American economic and moral strength so the US could defend civilization itself." The economic and military alliance he created proved unbeatable - and also provided the foundation for decades of postwar prosperity. Indeed, Rauchway argues that Roosevelt's greatest legacy was his monetary policy. Even today, the "Roosevelt dollar" remains both the symbol and the catalyst of America's vast economic power.
The Money Makers restores the Roosevelt dollar to its central place in our understanding of FDR, the New Deal, and the economic history of 20th-century America. We forget this history at our own peril. In revealing the roots of our postwar prosperity, Rauchway shows how we can recapture the abundance of that period in our own.
    Critic Reviews:
"Rauchways thoughtful, well-researched narrative history is a valuable contribution to economic history, with ample lessons for the current era." (Publishers Weekly)

  • The Privatization of Roads and Highways Audiobook by Walter Block

Title: The Privatization of Roads and Highways
    Subtitle: Human and Economic Factors
    Author: Walter Block
    Narrator: Jim Vann
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-06-15
    Publisher: Ludwig von Mises Institute
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 14 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
The Mises Institute is pleased to introduce Walter Block's remarkable new treatise on private roads that'll cause you to rethink the whole of the way modern transportation networks operate. It's bold, innovative, radical, and compelling and shows how free-market economic theory is the clarifying lens through which to see the failures of the state and see the alternative that's consistent with human liberty.
He shows that even the worst off-the-cuff scenario of life under private ownership of roads would be fantastic by comparison to the existing reality of government ownership of roads, which is awful in ways we don't entirely realize until Block fully explains them (think: highway deaths).
But that's only the beginning of what Professor Block has done. He has made a lengthy, detailed, and positive case that the privatization of roads would be socially optimal in every way. It would save lives, curtail pollution, save us (as individuals!) money, save us massive time, introduce accountability, and make transportation a pleasure instead of a huge pain in the neck.
Because this is the first-ever complete book on this topic, the length and detail are absolutely necessary. He shows that this isn't some libertarian pipe dream but the most practical application of free-market logic. Block is dealing with something that confronts us every day. And in so doing, he illustrates the power of economic theory to take an existing set of facts and help see them in a completely different way.
What's also nice is that the prose has great passion about it, despite its scholarly detail. Block loves answering the objections (aren't roads public goods? Aren't roads too expensive to build privately?) and making the case, fully aware that he has to overcome a deep and persistent bias in favor of public ownership.

Great book but repetitive and poorly edited
The points made in this book are great, but the audio editing is a disaster.
Very well read editing could be better
This book is a great resource for ideas that can be used to further an argument for free markets. The narration is very high quality with an easy to listen to voice. My only issue is the six to ten errors retakes left in the recording.

  • The Power Brokers Audiobook by Jeremiah D. Lambert

    Title: The Power Brokers
Subtitle: The Struggle to Shape and Control the Electric Power Industry
    Author: Jeremiah D. Lambert
    Narrator: Joe Barrett
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-04-15
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 21 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
For more than a century, the interplay between private, investor-owned electric utilities and government regulators has shaped the electric power industry in the United States. Provision of an essential service to largely dependent consumers invited government oversight and ever more sophisticated market intervention. The industry has sought to manage, coopt, and profit from government regulation. In The Power Brokers, Jeremiah Lambert maps this complex interaction from the late 19th century to the present day.
Lambert's narrative focuses on seven important industry players: Samuel Insull, the principal industry architect and prime mover; David Lilienthal, chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), who waged a desperate battle for market share; Don Hodel, who presided over the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) in its failed attempt to launch a multiplant nuclear power program; Paul Joskow, the MIT economics professor who foresaw a restructured and competitive electric power industry; Enron's Ken Lay, master of political influence and market rigging; Amory Lovins, a pioneer proponent of sustainable power; and Jim Rogers, head of Duke Energy, a giant coal-fired utility threatened by decarbonization. Lambert tells how Insull built an empire in a regulatory vacuum and how the government entered the electricity marketplace by making cheap hydropower available through the TVA. He describes the failed overreach of the BPA, the rise of competitive electricity markets, Enron's market manipulation, Lovins' radical vision of a decentralized industry powered by renewables, and Rogers' remarkable effort to influence cap-and-trade legislation.
Lambert shows how the power industry has sought to use regulatory change to preserve or secure market dominance and how rogue players have gamed imperfectly restructured electricity markets. Integrating regulation and competition in this industry has proven a difficult experiment.
    Members Reviews:
Interesting narrative of a complex industry
Would you consider the audio edition of The Power Brokers to be better than the print version?
Narration felt a bit folksly given the serious, non-fiction subject matter. I thought the forced accents were a bit much. Also, while I'm sure it's clear in the visual presentation, there are several sections (i.e. the intro chapter) where the narrative structure is unclear.
What other book might you compare The Power Brokers to and why?
Some of the early chapters share some overlap with The Age of Edison, while some others overlap with The Quest. I have not read anything else with this type of longitudinal review of the electric industry.
What aspect of Joe Barretts performance would you have changed?
I am not sure the narrator was the best choice for this book. In particular, I would not have recommended assuming the presumed accents of the individuals quoted from in the book.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Some of the early chapters, particularly those discussing struggles versus public and private utilities, felt particularly subjective. There was much focus on the political and legal tensions of the era with relatively little discussion of the technical aspects of the industry, the societal impacts of electrification, or many other facets which I believe would have been interesting.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 48 mins
    Language: English

Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
    Your business needs to scale.
In the author's own words, "I remember the day it hit me.... I was in Kiev when I got a call from my wife. She was in the hospital, having driven herself there during the middle of the night. She hadn't realized quite how ill she was, but in fact she needed surgery. Meanwhile, I was halfway around the world, and my children, who fortunately weren't very young, were alone. But they had to get themselves fed and off to school; their mother was in the hospital, and their father was far from home. I felt helpless and like a terrible husband and father. It took me three days to get home, three days during which I thought about the price of success.... Although I had created the successful business I had aspired to create, I was trapped. I couldn't make personal time for anything that was important to me if I expected to deliver the products and services I had promised to my clients. My physical presence was required, and there was no substitute. No one could fill in for me; no one could take my place. Of course, this gave me job security, but it came at the cost of not being able to take a vacation, or nothing would get done. I was living the life of a successful businessman, but it was not the life that I had intended. My physical presence was required at home, too. While I was on the road, I missed seeing my children grow up, let alone participating in their development. The concept of scale had become personal for me."
    What is holding you back?
What happened to the author occurs to many entrepreneurs and business owners when they discover that their businesses have grown so large and become so successful that they have become trapped by their own success. Has this happened to you? A scalable business makes it possible to create passive income and grow the business by doing less and by doing so more thoughtfully. It takes effort on your part to truly evaluate each of the four keys of scale.

Supporting material no where to be found
Audible does not supply accompanying material for this book, yet Frank starts the book by stating such material is available on his website, where it's nowhere to be found. I could find no contact info to ask the author for it, and the link to his Twitter profile didn't work + he had a horrible stock photo of "his team" on his website (it made me cringe).
The extremely poor website presence of the author made lose all trust in his credibility as an online marketer.
The content overall? Solid, but without the written extra material, it's not easy to follow. The advice in the book is more centered towards conversion optimization than scaling a business. Advice on the latter is more rudimentary, and not really helpful to me.
Much better is Making Money is Killing Your Business by Chuck Blakeman which even has its accompanying material available.
