    mostly network markating
many points are rehashed from His book, Now You Know. Good points and i would suggest that book unless you are working in pyramid sales.
Excellent read anyone can relate to
What a great book and even better on audio. Listen to this a few times a year and take notes each time.

    the best!!!
I finished this book in a day and a half. It will change your life. Thank you!!!
Best network marketing book by far!
I have been in network marketing for a little over two years now. As we all know, starting off in network marketing is difficult for those who have no experience. Most people quit within their first year. I would highly recommend this book for anyone starting out. The story gives you a complete and accurate representation of how building your business really is. Every aspect of the business is covered. I am sure that I will listen to this book several more times as it is just that good. For anyone that has been in network marketing for anytime, you know that over time your ambition and discipline tend to fade away as you build the business. We often times need motivation to get us excited again and continue building. This book is something that can be used for that motivation to get you back in the saddle again.

    Title: Mindless
Subtitle: Why Smarter Machines are Making Dumber Humans
    Author: Simon Head
    Narrator: Sean Pratt
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 33 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-05-14
    Publisher: Gildan Media, LLC
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 7 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
We live in the age of Computer Business Systems (CBSs) - the highly complex, computer-intensive management programs on which large organizations increasingly rely. In Mindless, Simon Head argues that these systems have come to trump human expertise, dictating the goals and strategies of a wide array of businesses, and de-skilling the jobs of middle class workers in the process.
CBSs are especially dysfunctional, Head argues, when they apply their disembodied expertise to transactions between humans, as in health care, education, customer relations, and human resources management. And yet there are industries with more human approaches, as Head illustrates with specific examples, whose lead we must follow and extend to the mainstream American economy.Mindless illustrates the shortcomings of CBS, providing an in-depth and disturbing look at how human dignity is slipping as we become cogs on a white collar assembly line.
    Critic Reviews:
Richard Sennett, author of Together: The Rituals, Pleasures and Politics of CooperationThe regimented society has arrived, and Simon Head is its most probing critic. He not only shows the grip of computerized bureaucracy on peoples lives, he also analyzes the economic interests and political processes which drive regimentation. This wide-ranging audiobook is clearly and at times eloquently written. A must-hear.

    Publisher's Summary:
A renowned futurist offers a vision of a reinvented world.
Large corporations, big governments, and other centralized organizations have long determined and dominated the way we work, access healthcare, get an education, feed ourselves, and generally go about our lives.
The economist Ronald Coase, in his famous 1937 paper "The Nature of the Firm," provided an economic explanation for this: Organizations lowered transaction costs, making the provision of goods and services cheap, efficient, and reliable. Today, this organizational advantage is rapidly disappearing. The Internet is lowering transaction costs - costs of connection, coordination, and trade - and pointing to a future that increasingly favors distributed sources and social solutions to some of our most immediate needs and our most intractable problems.
As Silicon Valley thought-leader Marina Gorbis, head of the Institute for the Future, portrays, a thriving new relationship-driven or "socialstructed" economy is emerging in which individuals are harnessing the powers of new technologies to join together and provide an array of products and services. Examples of this changing economy range from BioCurious, a members-run and free-to-use bio lab, to the peer-to-peer lending platform Lending Club, to the remarkable Khan Academy, a free online teaching service. These engaged and innovative pioneers are filling gaps and doing the seemingly impossible by reinventing business, education, medicine, banking, government, and even scientific research.
Based on extensive research into current trends, she travels to a socialstructed future and depicts an exciting vision of tomorrow.

  • Liquidated: An Ethnography of Wall Street Audiobook by Karen Zouwen Ho

Title: Liquidated: An Ethnography of Wall Street
    Author: Karen Zouwen Ho
    Narrator: Cynthia Wallace
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-15-13
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 25 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Financial collapses - whether of the junk bond market, the Internet bubble, or the highly leveraged housing market-are often explained as the inevitable result of market cycles: What goes up must come down. In Liquidated, Karen Ho punctures the aura of the abstract, all-powerful market to show how financial markets, and particularly booms and busts, are constructed. Through an in-depth investigation into the everyday experiences and ideologies of Wall Street investment bankers, Ho describes how a financially dominant but highly unstable market system is understood, justified, and produced through the restructuring of corporations and the larger economy.
Ho argues that bankers' approaches to financial markets and corporate America are inseparable from the structures and strategies of their workplaces. Recruited from elite universities as "the best and the brightest," investment bankers are socialized into a world of high risk and high reward. They are paid handsomely, with the understanding that they may be let go at any time. Their mission is the creation of shareholder value, but Ho demonstrates that their practices and assumptions often produce crises instead. By connecting the values and actions of investment bankers to the construction of markets and the restructuring of U.S. corporations, Liquidated reveals the particular culture of Wall Street often obscured by triumphalist readings of capitalist globalization.
    Critic Reviews:
"Ho's refreshing ethnography of the daily lives of Wall Street investment bankers...outlines a web of practices, beliefs and structures that may be vital to understanding what keeps the market system in place despite built-in instabilities." (Publishers Weekly)
"The book's great strength lies in Ho's careful observation of the means by which people succeed or fail on Wall Street, as she punctures many of the assumptions about how markets work." (Keir Martin, Times Literary Supplement)
"Karen Ho embarked on her study in classic anthropological manner: by blending into the background, listening intently, in a non-judgmental way - and then trying to join up the dots to get a 'holistic' picture of how the culture works. That patient ethnographic analysis has produced a fascinating portrait that will be refreshingly novel to most bankers." (Gillian Tett, Financial Times)
    Members Reviews:
    Good But Limited
Karen Ho is an anthropologist who worked briefly for an investment bank on Wall Street in the 1990s. Her work was cut short by a downsizing, but she later returned to Wall Street to do field research for a PhD. Her topic: the culture of investment banking. Much of her research was based on interviews with relatively junior analysts and associates; eventually her dissertation was recycled into "Liquidated." The book is packed with interesting insider information about how investment bankers are recruited on Ivy League campuses, how they toil away like slaves in cubicles, and how their lives are warped by the values of greed, competition, and always looking smart. At one point the author says that investment bankers go through life "always looking for the next Harvard" -- which sums things up nicely.

    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
The real-world realities of the far from dismal science.
A radically revised new edition of this highly readable, popular guide aimed at everyone from students to statesmen who want to make sense of the modern economy and grasp how economic theory works in practice.
It starts with the basics: what economics is about; the sources of economic growth such as people and investment; the role of central banks and fiscal policy in setting the macroeconomic framework; and the economics of everything - microeconomics.
From the underlying theory it moves to the specifics of the world economy: the developed world and the rise of emerging economies; the issues of global imbalances and the runaway world of finance; and the recent "great" recession - why it happened, how it was dealt with, its effects, its legacy and the way ahead.
The closing part puts the usefulness and the failings of economics under the spotlight, and looks at the innovative approaches being developed to make what has been called the "dismal science" fit for the modern world.
    Editorial Reviews:
Packed with engaging, thought-provoking economic information aimed at beginners, Economics: Making Sense of the Modern Economy: The Economist brings to life a collection of articles from this respected international affairs magazine with an energetic narration from David Thorpe. Edited by Saguao Datta, The Economist's economics correspondent, this recording covers a wide-ranging and eclectic series of topics, from the devastating global recession to pricing strategies in prostitution. Intriguing and accessible, the 12 hours of clear instruction will leave any listener feeling comfortable with the complexities of modern economics.
    Members Reviews:
A smorgasbord of old Economist articles.
What disappointed you about Economics: Making sense of the Modern Economy?
This is a collection of articles that had originally appeared on the pages of The Economist (a British financial magazine). The chapters in the book are edited versions of those articles and they do not blend well together. Yes, it's one of those make-a-book-out-of-a-magazine's-back-catalog efforts. In this case, the back catalog is at least 5 years old and woefully out of date.
Economic theories tend to go bad after a few years, and so to the theories put forward in this tome. On the plus side, the actual writing is structurally excellent.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The one saving grace about this audiobook is David Thorpe. There are times that I want to listen to a book not for it's content, but as background noise while I work. Mr. Thorpe is excellent in that role. He takes what is dry and boring in this book and reads it in almost a musical manor. Whether that is sufficient weight to overcome the book's shortcomings is debatable.
Poorly organized and difficult to enjoy
This collection of audio that incidentally is free to all subscribers of the electronic version is devoid of even modest organization. No real point it feels like a random collection of magazine articles. Which I guess it is, but it is not enjoyable.
    SPELLBINDING?
This may not be a spellbinding subject but it offers insight to the dismal science based on improved big data collection and better data analysis.

    Language: English
    Release date: 06-20-13
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 42 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
"Forget everything you think you know about the direction of the American economy, about our growing need for foreign oil, about the rise of the service economy and the decline of American manufacturing. The story of the next 30 years will not be a repeat of the last 30."
One of the most respected voices on Wall Street, Meredith Whitney shot to global prominence in 2007 when her warnings of a looming crisis in the financial sector proved all too prescient. Now, in her first book, she expands upon her biggest call since the financial crisis.
Whitney points out that it wasn't just consumers who binged on debt for the past 20 years but state and local governments, too. She explains how the fiscal sins of the past are beginning to transform the U.S. economy along regional lines. And she shows how we are moving into a new era in which wealth, power, and opportunity flow away from the coasts and toward the central corridor.
The housing boom was initially great for states such as California, Nevada, and Florida. State and municipal coffers overflowed, unemployment shrank, and local governments spent their tax revenue windfalls on pay hikes and pension increases for their public employees. But when the boom dried up in those parts of the country, so too did the tax revenues, forcing tax rate hikes and cuts to essential public services - especially education and infrastructure.
In contrast to those doom-and-gloom headlines, a much different trend was developing in interior states such as North Dakota, Indiana, and Texas. They survived the housing crisis relatively unscathed, avoiding mass foreclosures and budgetary chaos. As a result they've had the money to retrain workers and offer tax incentives to companies willing to relocate. Coupled with the recent booms in natural gas and oil extraction and a resurgence in manufacturing, these states are poised to become the new powerhouses of the American economy.
Whitney offers a sobering vision of the next few decades, with the coastal states continuing to struggle while the central corridor continues to thrive. She explores the consequences of roughly half the country stuck in a vicious cycle of decline while the other half enjoys a virtuous circle of growth. Whitney also offers practical ideas to help the struggling parts of the country - before the fate of the states becomes irreversible.

    Statistic Overload.Grateful to the Narrator.
What made the experience of listening to Fate of the States the most enjoyable?
I actually tried to read the hardcover version of this book first and decided to try the audiobook to see if it improved my perspective. I didn't finish reading the actual hardcover because there are so many statistics that I began to feel I was reading a scientific journal. I was happiest with the audio book. The book is a compendium of dry facts and figures which might have made my head explode if not for the expertise of the narrator. Ms. Whitney's book is part topical and part historical which makes reading it in book form a little jarring and slow. It seems she can't decide if she should be the statistician she is, or rope us in by colloquial banter. It often times feels as if it is 2 books. All that being said, when Ms.

    Publisher's Summary:
The DNA of business has changed. Forever. You can blame technology, smartphones, social media, online shopping and everything else, but nothing changes this reality: we are in a moment of business purgatory. So, what are you going to do about it?
Mitch Joel, one of the world's leading experts in new media, warns that the time has come to CTRL ALT DELETE. To reboot and to start re-building your business model. If you don't, Joel warns, not only will your company begin to slide backwards, but you may find yourself unemployable within five years.
That's a very strong warning, but in his new audiobook, CTRL ALT DELETE, Joel explains the convergence of five key movements that have changed business forever. The movements have already taken place, but few businesses have acted on them. He outlines what you need to know to adapt right now. He also points to the seven triggers that will help you take advantage of these game-changing factors to keep you employable as this new world of business unfolds.
Along the way, Joel introduces his novel concept of "squiggle" which explains how you can learn to adapt your personal approach to your career, as new technology becomes the norm. In short, this is not an audiobook about "change management" but rather an audiobook about "changing both you AND your business model."

    Cemented my opinion about tech
I've always agreed that the future is a connected one, and this guy has convinced me even more. He's given me even more reason to continue down the path I'm on in terms of online marketing.
He needs a bit of coaching on the narration. He has a habit of going down in pitch consistently on the end of sentences, even though it might not be appropriate for the thought. I usually love when books are narrated by the author because I can catch the author's excitement for the subject. On this one, however, I think he's trying too hard to be good on the narration by leaving out his speaking style. I wouldn't mind a little bit more of speaking and less reading.
That said, I think it's a great book, especially for anyone who doubts even a little bit that the internet is here to stay. Great for company owners and managers who are resisting getting more involved in new media.
Great idea - but big disappointment
    Any additional comments?
This book addresses an important question. My wife and I are both in industries that are being disrupted, so we listened to it together on a road trip and had hoped to get some ideas of how we might address the disruptions. However, we found the book very shallow. The book seemed like a stream of cliches (like pealing the onion, leaning into it, etc.) and extremely poor metaphors (like purgatory and having sex with your data). Take away these weak literary devices and you are left with a bunch of shallow statements - nothing novel.
The author spends a lot of time talking about being connected. My recommendation would be that he disconnect for a while and think deeply about the content.

How hedge funds make money by taking it from the rest of us - and how you can join them!
Top hedge fund managers make more than Oprah, Rupert Murdoch, and A-Rod combined - but they aren't running news and entertainment empires or playing baseball for the New York Yankees. Aren't you curious about how these hedge fund dudes make so much doing who knows what? You may even wonder if you can get there, too. After all, this is America!
This book gives you the answers in a twelve-step guide to accumulating vast riches the way hedge fund managers do - by playing trillion-dollar poker with a marked deck. Through each easy step, you'll learn the sleight of hand and disregard for basic morality you'll need to move from making tens of dollars an hour to millions an hour! Along the way, you'll also question whether these hedge fund moguls make markets work better - as they and their apologists insist - or cause instability, siphon off capital, and destroy value without adding so much as a single widget to the economy.
Takes a fascinating tour of the wild side of fantasy finance to explain just how hedge fund managers make so much money - and whether or not the million-an-hour crowd produces anything positive for society and the economy.
Teaches you hedge fund secrets that make it possible to pull down astounding sums in the space of minutes - from rigging your bets to milking millions in special tax breaks - if you're willing to bankrupt your morality for the cash.
Counters many of the most common arguments about why speculating in financial markets is somehow "worth more" than creating entertainment, electronics, or consumer goods that consumers want.

Misleading title for this political rant
What would have made How to Make a Million Dollars an Hour better?
It would have been better if the title more accurately depicted the content. It was a catchy title designed to sell books.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I would have liked it a lot more if I would have known ahead of time that it was a rant against "the system."
    Any additional comments?
Not a bad book - just not what I thought I was buying.
    Deceptive title
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Someone who is interested in listening for hours to a misguided individual who does not understand economics discuss ethics and morality.
If you are of low intelligence, paranoid, like socialism or conspiracy theories you may enjoy this book.
Has How to Make a Million Dollars an Hour turned you off from other books in this genre?
I am interested in financial books. However this was not a financial book, it was an ethics book.
Have you listened to any of Oliver Wymans other performances before? How does this one compare?
Reading was good. Content was not.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from How to Make a Million Dollars an Hour?
I would not publish this book. It is absolute rubbish.
    Any additional comments?
The title is deceptive, it contains no information on how to make a million dollars a hour.
It is an eight hour rant about the ethics of hedge funds.

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
The recent economic crisis was a dramatic reminder that capitalism can both produce and destroy. It's a system that by its very nature encourages predators and creators, locusts and bees. But, as Geoff Mulgan argues in this compelling, imaginative, and important book, the economic crisis also presents a historic opportunity to choose a radically different future for capitalism, one that maximizes its creative power and minimizes its destructive force.
In an engaging and wide-ranging argument, Mulgan digs into the history of capitalism across the world to show its animating ideas, its utopias and dystopias, as well as its contradictions and possibilities. Drawing on a subtle framework for understanding systemic change, he shows how new political settlements reshaped capitalism in the past and are likely to do so in the future. By reconnecting value to real-life ideas of growth, he argues, efficiency and entrepreneurship can be harnessed to promote better lives and relationships rather than just a growth in the quantity of material consumption. Healthcare, education, and green industries are already becoming dominant sectors in the wealthier economies, and the fields of social innovation, enterprise, and investment are rapidly moving into the mainstream--all indicators of how capital could be made more of a servant and less a master.
This is a book for anyone who wonders where capitalism might be heading next--and who wants to help make sure that its future avoids the mistakes of the past.

    A work of sustained brilliance
This author compactly, eloquently, I will say at moments, lyrically describes capitalism, its facets, its dangers, its meanings and effects, its penetration into our lives and the meaning we assign to things and live by, its recent developments and its prospects, worldwide and throughout history. In terms of meaningfulness, alongside clarity of explanation and reach of imagination, such that a non-technician can get a great harvest of understanding in a minimal investment of time and effort (and that's a very capitalism-influenced way of describing it), I would rank this author and book in the second rank, all time (the first rank being occupied exclusively by Adam Smith, the second rank including others, many of whom are quoted and acknowledged in this book, such as Schumpeter and Weber). He might be as biased as any human is, generically, but he is in no sense "on a side," or "selling a view," in some partisan way. Here is an amazing synthesis of so much of economics and culture, often held up in lights I had not imagined. In describing these things of great complexity, this author dances through the task. This hasn't been like reading a book, it has been like continuously having my mind opened, continuously being shown new vistas and horizons on things I thought familiar. It is like getting a tour of my own society conducted by some alien from another whole system that understands it better than I do.
If this guy gives a class, writes a book or even puts out a rap album, sign me up.
