Lombard Street by Walter Bagehot is a description of the money market, published in 1873. Bagehot was one of the first writers to describe and explain the world of international and corporate finance, banking, and money in understandable language. This book was in part a reaction to the 1866 collapse of Overend, Gurney and Company, located at 65 Lombard Street, from which comes the title.

Banking and institutional history fans may like it
Bagehot was a ground-breaking writer on things financial and economic. This work was a landmark I believe in the formation of 20th-century concepts of banking, and central banking in particular. Those who enjoyed "The Bankers Who Broke the World" might like this, though this is drier. I liked the cadence of this fine, sober English prose.
    Specialist interest
Excellent reading by narrator. Of course this is a famous book. So anyone who reads it probably already interested in finance. Precise, elegant language of author is a pleasure. And his dry observation interesting and amusing. But its alo a bit tedious at times despite being of modest length.

    Title: FREE
Subtitle: The Future of a Radical Price
    Author: Chris Anderson
    Narrator: Chris Anderson
    Format: Abridged
Length: 3 hrs and 20 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-02-09
    Publisher: Hyperion
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 10 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
The New York Times best-selling author heralds the future of business in Free. In his revolutionary best seller, The Long Tail, Chris Anderson demonstrated how the online marketplace creates niche markets, allowing products and consumers to connect in a way that has never been possible before. Now, in Free, he makes the compelling case that, in many instances, businesses can profit more from giving things away than they can by charging for them.
Far more than a promotional gimmick, Free is a business strategy that may well be essential to a company's survival. The costs associated with the growing online economy are trending toward zero at an incredible rate. Never in the course of human history have the primary inputs to an industrial economy fallen in price so fast and for so long. Just think that in 1961 a single transistor cost $10; now Intel's latest chip has two billion transistors and sells for $300 (or 0.000015 cents per transistor - effectively too cheap to price). The traditional economics of scarcity just don't apply to bandwidth, processing power, and hard-drive storage.
Yet this is just one engine behind the new Free, a reality that goes beyond a marketing gimmick or a cross-subsidy. Anderson also points to the growth of the reputation economy; explains different models for unleashing the power of Free; and shows how to compete when your competitors are giving away what you're trying to sell.
In Free, Chris Anderson explores this radical idea for the new global economy and demonstrates how this revolutionary price can be harnessed for the benefit of consumers and businesses alike.
    Critic Reviews:
"As in Anderson's previous book, the thought-provoking material is matched by a delivery that is nothing short of scintillating." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
Excellent Explanation for Using Free as a Financial Model
This is a really good book on how the digital era has ended up offering digital products for free. The use of free as a business model has always been around but now many more traditional businesses have gone under due to the demand of a free model on the internet. Anderson explains how wealthy corporations have made money offering free products and selling a premium model, advertising, and selling support for the free products. Interesting discussion of free journalism and the collapse of newspapers and professional journalists. I wonder if he ever anticipated the rise of fake journalism and a country infiltrating others with it. Not in this book.
Insightful book into an issue that you make not give a lot of thought to
In his book "Free: The Future of a Radical Price," Chris Anderson sheds light on an interesting transition in the marketplace. By giving away something for free, the result will be continuous purchases to supplement this "free" product. Anderson highlights how this model began with disposable razors and has been adapted to today's products such as video game consoles/games, coffee makers, and cell phones. Now the web is driving more and more products to become "free." We are seeing free products popping up all over the internet in terms of music and movies. Google services, such as GMail, are all free.
Anderson does a great job of explaining how an application that is digitally based is inevitably headed towards being free.

Baker documents the fundamental policy changes since 1980 that destabilized the economy and eroded the broad prosperity of the post-war period. His expert analysis explains the outcomes clearly so we can prevent similar financial disasters in the future.
    Critic Reviews:
"For a more straightforward primer on the crash, the reader cannot do better than Dean Baker's short volume, Plunder and Blunder." (The American Prospect)
    Members Reviews:
Dean Baker is a great Economist.
This book is a great listen. I read it 1 or 2 sittings and plan on listening to it many more times. Baker breaks down the causes of the two recent bubbles (the stock bubble of the late 90's and the recent housing bubble), and describes the fallout in detail. I am not very knowledge of this material (yet), but was able to grasp all of his concepts and learned a tremendous amount. For example, he talks about the dangers of an overvalued dollar and the ensuing trade deficit. Some of the concepts were foreign to me, but I was easily able to comprehend them, due to the concise language used by the author.
His critique of Fed Chairman Allan Greenspan was fascinating. He sites an article in the Washington Post where Greenspan implied he didn't know the dangers of the sub-prime mortgage market as he left the Fed in 2005, and didn't bother pass this knowledge on to incoming Fed Chair Ben Bernanke. As if this data was difficult to access for an economist of this stature. This is a reoccurring theme in the book, major economists across the board failed to recognize either bubble. Even though the data was staring them in the face. For anyone investing in the stock market and or housing, this book is a must read. Not to mention the price is right!

    Title: Flip
Subtitle: How to Turn Everything You Know on Its Head---and Succeed Beyond Your Wildest Imaginings
    Author: Peter Sheahan
    Narrator: Simon Vance
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 46 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-23-08
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 40 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Flip reveals what the superstars of modern business have in common: an ability to "flip"---to think counterintuitively and then act boldly, with no regard for business-as-usual conventions. The only rule: there are no rules. Those who heed his proven advice will be well placed to join other "flipstars," including entrepreneurs Richard Branson and Rupert Murdoch and such visionary corporations as Google, Toyota, and Apple. But those who run with the pack and stick to the business school curriculum will find themselves perilously left behind.
Presenting perennial wisdom in a fresh new way, Sheahan teaches today's decision makers how to embrace change and successfully operate in an economy that runs on new ideas.
    Critic Reviews:
"Sheahan illustrates his points convincingly with examples pulled from the business headlines." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Interesting Stories, Flawed Logic
Had there been more research, this could have been an interesting book. Unfortunately, it falls well short, coming to the absurd conclusion that to succeed, you must simply do things that everyone thinks will fail. How many times this destroys the person's career or company Sheahan doesn't know, since they didn't become successful so he didn't look at them. He seems completely unaware that his thesis results from a simple case of selection bias.
What we really need to know is the decision process at the time that enabled people to tell when to go with and when to go against the tide. Instead of examining this, this book simply uses hindsight, leaving the reader with the unsatisfying conclusion that these people were successful because they succeeded.
    Contains a Key Learning
The novice walking this material will find it valuable. Otherwise, Sheahan has crammed a lot of well known principles into this book. However, the book contains a principle which is particularly well presented and that is "move forward despite ambiguity." It is better to act and learn from what happens than to stand down and wait for adquate information. He presents the idea in a particularly useful fashion.
I believe that if a book provides one usuable idea or insight to the reader - it is worth while. Read that section at least and congratulate the author for bringing together well worn thinking and putting it into useful form.
    Total Waste
Would you try another book from Peter Sheahan and/or Simon Vance?

    Any additional comments?
Outdated, out of context, does not have any value.

    Title: While America Aged
    Author: Roger Lowenstein
    Narrator: Michael McConnohie
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 16 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-01-08
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 44 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Negotiating high benefits means gambling with future finances - and when the farm gets sold out from underneath major corporations or public institutions, it affects all of us, and in ways we might not imagine. With his trademark narrative panache, Lowenstein unravels the truth about how pensions work in America and illuminates the impending crisis.
    Members Reviews:
A dry departure from L's usual page turner, but
This is an outstanding condensation of the the history of US labor relations as they unfolded within the Auto industry. Lowenstien paints a grim, but I fear all too accurate, picture of the futility of taxpayer recent bailout of an already comatose industry. He is even handed in his citing of causes: inept management and a culture of expediency matched by an ever over reaching UAW. Even more sobering is his treatment of New York City and State, the culture of cronyism and pandering that lead to disastrous and irrevocable concessions given to the unions over the years. Lowenstien names names, and cites specific salaries and pension obligations and points out those who stand to earn more in retirement at the age of 55 or younger, than they did while they were working. Astonishing.
Read this book before the next strike is threatened.
    More detail than I wanted
I listened to this book in order to better understand pensions, since I am (apparently) part of a shrinking number of working Americans still accruing a one. The book goes into a little more detail than I had hoped for, particularly in regards to the San Diego pension crisis and the NY city workers pension fiasco. The reader is not the best, either. So, while you get the general concepts behind why pensions are being phased out, you may feel bogged down a bit by the minutia.
    While America Aged
An interesting book. However, the monotone voice of the reader makes it hard to listen.
    True stories you won't forget
Roger Lowenstein lays out a complicated topic in an accessible story form. Well worth the time to educate yourself on this topic. I will be paying attention to the politics and police/firefighters union negotiations from now on.
    Timely information neutral presentation
Good coverage of combined misuse of trust by retirees in the system. The attempts to maintain an "unbiased position" leave the implication that the workers are equally to blame as the owners. If that is so, how do we explain the massive shift in wealth distribution -- the autoworker who retires at 50 years old does not have a comparable portion to the CEO who is let go with a REAL golden parachute.

    Skip It...
What did you like best about The Naked Trader? What did you like least?
I didn't like anything about this book. I Hated It..
Would you ever listen to anything by Robbie Burns again?
    Never Again.
How could the performance have been better?
Focus more on the subject, less on tea and toast, and stop Trying to be witty.
Who do you think would benefit most from listening to The Naked Trader?
Perhaps British folks who can tolerate his humor.
    Any additional comments?
A very British book written by a very British Author. Perhaps the Brits can appreciate this book but this American could have done better buying something else. Full of British colloquialisms. There does appear to be some useful information, but not at all worth what I paid for it.
    What a gem!
I felt I was taking a bit of a chance on this one (I'm not English and I don't trade on the FTSE), but what a great listen this turned out to be. The material in this book is so practical (some would say obvious but I don't agree). There are no hidden catches and he definitely paints the picture warts and all. It is filled with practical advice and 'real' examples of traps and pitfalls... all the time compelling me to trade smart. Thanks Robbie, you're a POM, but nice work!
Dated, not very useful for the American Markets.
A british book written around 1997. Not enough discussion of the American stock markets to be useful to a US trader.
    There's a lot to learn...
As someone of average intelligence, who has worked in finance my whole life, I didn't realise just how little I knew about the world of trading.

    Title: The China Price
Subtitle: The True Cost of Chinese Competitive Advantage
    Author: Alexandra Harney
    Narrator: Karen White
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-08-08
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 65 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
In a country with almost no transparency, where graft is institutionalized and workers have little recourse to the rule of law, incentives to lie about business practices vastly outweigh incentives to tell the truth. Harney reveals that despite a decade of monitoring factories, outsiders all too often have no idea of the conditions under which goods from China are made. She exposes the widespread practice of using a dummy or model factory as a company's false window out to the world, concealing a vast number of illegal factories operating completely off the books.
Some Western companies are better than others about sniffing out such deception, but too many are perfectly happy to embrace plausible deniability as long as the prices remain so low. And in the Gold Rush atmosphere that has infected the country, in which everyone is clamoring to get rich and corruption is rampant, it's almost impossible for the Chinese government's own underfunded regulatory mechanisms to do much good at all. But perhaps the most important revelation in The China Price is how fast change is coming, one way or another.
    Critic Reviews:
"A vivid portrait of factory life in the country that sells consumer goods for the lowest price possible." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Packed with facts, figures, and sympathetic portraits of Chinese workers and managers, Harney's is a perceptive take on the world's workshop." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Thoroughly Research, Balanced Account
This book is very thoroughly researched -- unlike many journalists who write about China, it is clear the author both speaks Chinese and has a good understanding of the culture and history. Furthermore, it is a very balanced account - neither demonizing Walmart, the Chinese government, nor factory owners, but provides a good understanding of how each part fits into the big picture. Personally, I found the level of detail just right and the anecdotes very revealing.
    This book is Garbage Propaganda
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
    Marxists, Socialists, Stupid people
Has The China Price turned you off from other books in this genre?
    Yes
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment and a little anger that I bought this book. Don't trust the other reviews. They don't know what they are talking about.
    Any additional comments?
This book is anti-capitalist propaganda. It's written by a journalist with no economic insight. They blame capitalism and free trade on everything. The focus is on the exploitation of third world workers though. The author blames global warming, job loss, and chinese worker not getting paid enough on capitalism and free trade. It is seriously typical socialist garbage. Get a book that is more centered on economics. Otherwise, you'll just be misinformed by this fear monger.
    Good Insight
I thought this book gave a good insight into China's market. my only issue was that the book is a little outdated buy now and would like to know how things are looking these days. The book makes it seem like China is moving towards playing by the book and being more fair, but now we know they steal all their info, just think google and the enforcement still sucks.
