Written in 2011, but prescient on many levels

This is a listenable book with many thought-provoking passages. The world the author foresaw in 2011 has of course not perfectly materialized, but I was startled how often he was right. If the author had turned out perfectly right, I would have to chalk it up to a substantial measure of luck (since nobody knows the future, and nobody who knew the future would be a TV commentator or schlepping books; he would be the richest person on the planet).

The one-star audible reviewer obviously missed the point, as indicated by his short-swing (and wrong for now) view of gold's ascendency (which was already wrong when that review was written). My approach to investing is much like this author's, with a macro focus and pretty long term view. I see this book as more "teaching how to fish" (i.e., think) than simply handing me a serving of fish (a one-time set of"hot tips.") This book satisfies my approach of developing a sound underlying method of portfolio allocation, KNOWING that some of my assumptions (and anyone's, outside of pure luck) will not be proven true. And yes, some of the conclusions I don't agree with -- I would hope. Yes, some asset classes have swung wide of where the author expected, counseling a rethinking of some of the recommendations. But that is easy to do.

A problem with any dated product is getting the right frame of mind to benefit from it. For example, many ground-breaking films don't seem so great on a re-watching, often precisely because they have been so widely imitated and refined upon. So, a need is there to rewind and think of the work in terms of the time it was created. I found this exercise easy here, and was pleased to check the author's prognostications against the (limited) record since then. Indeed, many contrarian ideas voiced by this author are more mainstream now than they were in 2011. (That would seem to be the point of contrarian thinking: seeing things others do not, which later materialize in a wider recognition as true. That is how the investor makes a profit, and isn't that why we are here? Under these sorts of tests, the book comes out strong.

As for the pop-culture and other cultural references, I found them entertaining.

Finding The Entrepreneurial Mindset

The value you gain from this book will depend to a large extent on where you are in your entrepreneurial journey. One of the major benefits of this book is that Dr. Odiwe shares the many struggles of his own journey from broke foreign student living out of his automobile to very successful businessman. The primary reason for his success was his resourcefulness and determination - he was not willing to give up on his dream.

Dr. Odiwe provides many valuable lessons for success in The New American Millionaires. Unfortunately too many native Americans simply do not have the determination to do whatever it takes so long as it is legal and ethical to achieve success. I finally gave up waiting for them to actually say how anyone thinks about investing, or why, or how when I realized the best I was going to get was some stale process about how they pretend to think about their investments. The most valuable thing in the whole book was them reading aloud the table of the AUM of each endowment.

A Must-Have Resource for Every Investor!

Great book on realizing that we individual investors at certain times when the market is overreacting should be doing the exact opposite of what the market (i..e.,big institutions) and our emotions tell us. For example, when everyone is selling, fear rules the day (i.e., everyone and their mother is panicking), and stock prices are plummeting, we should at some point be BUYING, not selling!

On the other hand, when everyone is buying and greed rules, we should be selling and taking profits! It's almost as if Warren Buffet, the greatest investor of all time, wrote this book! A MUST READ for beginning or seasoned investors! Now I don't let my emotions dictate my decisions to buy or sell, thank God! I sell into rallies, and then have money when corrections come, so I can buy stocks at a discount to their fair value! ALWAYS REMEMBER, MR. MARKET ISN'T RATIONAL AT TIMES, AND AT THOSE TIMES WE CAN SELL OVER-PRICED STOCKS AND BUY UNDER-PRICED STOCKS IF OUR EMOTIONS DON'T OVERRULE COMMON SENSE!

The Book I Wish I Read 15 Years Ago

If I read this book when I started investing instead of this year, I expect that I would be hundreds of thousands of dollars better off today than I am. None of the books I've encountered before this one helped me correctly identify the behavior that was sabotaging my performance.

In practical terms, I have never had a problem accepting loses quickly, but I always had a problem holding onto winners. I had always assumed that I was simply risk averse or humble enough to take a small profit.

Bill Bonner continues his long career of successful and I am sure profitable writing. This is a selection of some of his "greatest hits" from his daily newsletter "The Daily Reckoning". I for one try to read his newsletter every day and almost always enjoy the sensible and pithy content. As Mr. Bonner and the rest of the contributors at Agora Publishing frequently point out, The Daily Reckoning is a free publication, so I have no problem at all with putting up with the constant marketing barrage from his publishing house that comes with giving them your email address. I've bought most of his other books (The New Empire of Debt: The Rise and Fall of an Epic Financial Bubble (Agora Series);Mobs, Messiahs, and Markets: Surviving the Public Spectacle in Finance and Politics (Agora Series);Financial Reckoning Day Fallout: Surviving Today's Global Depression (Agora Series)) and even temporarily subscribed to one or two of the Agora paid newsletter services.

Whatever Bill Bonner and his contributors write is well worth the money, whether free or paid for: I thoroughly enjoy all of their work.

Mr. Bonner writes well: he is always lucid, articulate and controversial. There are no sacred cows for this man, and some of his hits truly strike the bulls right in the eye:

First Level Thinking

What would have made The Era of Uncertainty better?

Famed investor Howard Marks refers to "first level thinking" as the obvious- what everyone sees. It is obvious and unsophisticated. This book encourages simplistic first-level textbook driven macroeconomics. And it is particularly not worth anyone's time since it really doesn't offer any useful strategies, only vague warnings.The author's owe anyone who took their warnings and ideas at face value their money back and then some. Nearly everything predicted in this book turned out wrong. We're still waiting for inflation, the dollar is at new highs, gold, oil and commodities are down.

Would you ever listen to anything by Francois Trahan and Katherine Krantz again?

Probably not but I'd love to know what rationalizations they are using to comfort themselves with? I'd read their explanation of how they could be so ruinously wrong.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Pronounce finance words/terms correctly, like REIT is "reet" not "right".

The distilled wisdom of entrepreneurs

I've been "lucky" in many aspects of life, one of the most rewarding of which has been to work for, as an employee or independent consultant, some wonderfully creative and successful businesses. I've worked for startup companies that have grown from one-person shops to become renowned global enterprises with hundreds of employees. I've worked for self-made business owners who did not let their upbringings in humble circumstances prevent them becoming multimillionaires.

I've seen firsthand many characteristics of successful business people including extraordinary intelligence, mental flexibility that rapidly adapts to changing business conditions, highly specialized knowledge of a particular industrial or commercial niche, a love of their field of endeavor, absolute confidence in themselves and the products and services they provide, a spirit of fairness, positive expectations, a passion for excellence, and the ability to instill these qualities in a team of employees through inspired leadership.
