Informative and gripping read

Matthew Condon presents a balanced account of a fascinating period in Queensland's history. I like the way he does not try to sensationalise the events.

One thing I always enjoy with history is pictures and there were none

I've read all three of the books associated with the Queensland Police. I thought the first book and this last book told the whole sordid story quite well. I was a visitor to Brisbane around that time in the mid 80's visiting a friend who was working there at the time. I don't know that he was aware of the extent of the corruption. One thing I always enjoy with history is pictures and there were none. The newspapers must have had hundreds of them.

I never realised just how bad it was!

This was a real eye-opener. I'm 55 now, so when all this was happening in QLD (I was only interested in girls, music and my mates) it was just some "talking heads" on the news. Reading it now... to understand how bad things were... was just jaw-dropping. A great read!

Brilliant

This book brings together the events described in the first two books and then adds more to make a comprehensive picture of the history of Queensland curruption, policing and politics from the 50s onwards. I couldn't put it down. It's a wake up call to all of the destructive power of corruption. Brilliant.

100 most wanted

This book is different from the everyday offering, it's a listing of the top 100 (in reverse) of the most wanted to come out of Brooklyn as far their criminals, crooks, and creeps, as rated by this author's standards. He names them and then tells a bit about them. Many are obvious and people you'd recognize like David Berkowitz- Son of Sam but there are also those who are more obscure like Ludwig Lee who was investigated after dismembered body parts turned up back in 1927. Or Mendel Epstein who was called the "Prodfather", a corrupt rabbi who had the means to arrange for a "get" from husbands for a price when they didn't want one. Quite the unusual list of folks collected and arranged for your reading pleasure. Not all are criminal or even men for that matter, but they kept me entertained for hours learning about 'baddies' from all different eras.

Very interesting story ruined by poor writing

I really wanted to like this book but the writing is so bad, the storytelling is corny and there is way too much emphasis on D&D (instead of many other important parts of what happened). I listened to it for hours and I finally gave up.

Fascinating stories and a pretty good read!

While I've never heard of most of the people in this book, I did enjoy reading about them. The author writes very well, and it seemed to be properly edited until about 3/4 of the way through I noticed a couple minor mistakes. I admit I got the book free on a promotion, so I can't complain about the price. But it was fascinating to read about some kids who had been lost and presumed dead, only to be discovered alive so many years later. Some were raised for so long in captivity, they had idea of what their former identity was. Trying to go back to a life and family that do you don't remember must be devastating for so many people. Or the case of the actress who played Lois Lane in the Superman movies...although she was only missing for a few days, it was interesting to learn that she had suffered from bipolar disorder. I did not know that, and I don't think a lot of people have ever heard of her story. Some of the stories are from other countries like Austria and Japan. I felt that some of the stories could have used a few more details and seemed to be cut a little short. Most of them are like a synopsis of each person's disappearance, but still give enough information on each one to tell you the basic story. Elizabeth Smart's story was in there and I thought that one was a little short being there was so much media coverage about her. But I guess several books have already been written about her story, so this just includes the high points. I felt like Amanda Berry and the other two victims in the Cleveland kidnappings should have been included in this book, but they're not.

Definitely Worth Reading

Contract killers are usually associated with the mob. This rectifies that notion and also tries to catagorise the type of killing. Is the killer a serial killer for instance. Well written and researched examples of contract killers proving that they still operate on the 'Dark Web'. it also looks at the type of person that hires a killer; looks at women killers; also defines murder Inc.

I started this book thinking that it would, in general just concentrate on mob 'hits' but this makes you realise that it still goes on and also makes you think!. I was captured by the true content and conjecture and listened start to finish in one go.

Definitely a 'must read', especially the mechanics of what is involved in killing ie what weapon, when to strike,what mental state certain contract killers have to experience to 'get the job done.'

It's nothing personal - it's just business! A thumping good read!

Excellent but hard to fathom

This volume was the most enjoyable of the two because the stories were longer and more in depth. People who have vanished makes for some horrific reading, especially for the families that experienced these cases firsthand. My condolences to those that it affected, regardless of the circumstances. The unexplained shows no mercy on anyone and the nightmare of it grips tightly and doesn't let go. Another phenomenal work by Andrew J Clark.

First volume is better

This book was so so. It was a quick read and not very many details are given. A wee bit of a disappointment, sorry would not recommend buying this when there are much better books one can purchase on this subject.

Just a fraction of the life of Susan Atkins. The book "Child of Satan, Child of God" is far more in depth.

High level overview - disappointing

I thought this book would be from Susan's point of view. It wasn't. Too high level. It is just a quick overview that doesn't give any details. Very disappointing.
