The crime also took a heavy toll on local residents, pitting families and neighbors against one another. The fact that the case was never fully resolved gave it a certain staying power, with many unanswered questions.

Assuming that the author used correct punctuation to indicate pauses, etc., the reader didn't use them. And pronouncing "school" much more like "skull" gets very distracting since the word is used so often in this great story. She just was very hard to listen to - I stuck with it because of the story.

Not a whodunnit

I don't want to give any spoilers. The book begins with the climax and goes downhill from there. The narration is almost timeless, but if fairness she doesn't have much to work with.

Dry, Academic...But a Must for Armchair Sociologists

THIRTY-EIGHT WITNESSES was mentioned in some article that I recently read, though I forget which one and what it was about; I am just now on the April VANITY FAIRS so it could now be some old issue. That being said, this slim 1964 non-fiction (billed on the cover as "classic journalism") is more of a thesis then a book, despite being written by A.M. Rosenthal, the former editor of THE NEW YORK TIMES. The subject matter is an important, not a true crime book per se, but more of a sociological mediation on the "thirty-eight" witnesses. In March 1964 Kitty Genovese was coming home for work early in the morning when she was stabbed repeatedly over thirty minutes, with none of the neighbors, who heard the screaming, calling the police. This has been referred to in sociology as "the bystander effect" or "Genovese Syndrome," a social psychological phenomenon. When the book was written the perpetrator was in jail but there was no more information; basic internet digging shows that he is still in prison and eligible for parole in 2013; but the book is not about the crime itself but about the apathy of the witnesses. Arguments are pondered as to why, but this seems to be a turning point in the "urban jungle" where the stoop neighborliness of the 1950s ends, just as Camelot did months earlier. Because we know more is 2012 than Rosenthal knew in 1964 the book lacks an all-encompassing view. For instance, we now know about dialing 911 and emergency services, but Rosenthal goes on a lengthy - and tedious - aside about how emergency calls are routed in other major cities, from Atlanta to Seattle. The book has photos of the neighborhood with diagrams of where the multiple stabbings happened. The book isn't about Genovese - she was merely the victim in this Big Apple morality tale. An interesting read, though dry and a bit academic, but a must for fellow Sociologists.

Compelling read.

Such a sad, sad story. Kitty Genovese's life was cut short by a murderer, and this book tells the story of those who were accused of hearing the murder and not intervening. While the historical story may be partially true, there's a lot more to it.

The horrors of the vanished

These were some appalling stories of heartbreak and horror. Everywhere, around the world, there are cases of those that vanish in thin air. Some are eventually found, and some are not. This book mentions many of those in the last one hundred years. Mr. Clark uses his extensive research to give us a lot to think about in the truth of these tragedies. Excellent work with a high recommendation

Very scary stories that will leave you shaken!

I still can't believe some of the stories in this book. They are just shocking on multiple levels. The idea of people vanishing itself is a bit scary. Though, the way the author puts together the different stories takes this to a new level. I don't suggest reading this book late at night. I gave it a try and I had difficulty sleeping afterwards. The book makes for fantastic entertainment in a shocking way. The stories are all varied and the author does a great job just taking you into the story by the excellent quality of narration, voice, and setting.

Not bad. Not great.

It wasn't bad. It wasn't amazing. I didn't feel like I got any inside scoop on any of the cases. It felt more or less like reading about the cases on Wikipedia.

This is a fascinating book.Some cases in this book I remember some I do not.It is VERY interesting. Just shows you one never knows.

Great mini book about the Montgomery case

Great mini book about Lisa Montgomery who murdered Bobbi Jo Stinnett by strangling her unconscious then performing an amateur cesarean section to extract the 8 1/2 month old fetus, then kidnapping the newborn baby girl and claiming that she was her baby that she had with her new husband Kevin Montgomery. Lisa Montgomery already had 4 children from her first marriage to Carl Boman who were now between 14 and 18 years old, 3 girls and 1 boy but she really wanted to have a baby with her new husband Kevin Montgomery and had faked pregnancies multiple times since she married Kevin Montgomery. Unbeknownst to Montgomery Lisa was not physically capable of getting pregnant without the aid of IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) because she had gotten a bilateral tubal ligation where her fallopian tubes were cut and burned after having 4 children in under 4 years early in her marriage to Carl Boman. Boman had tried to tell this to Kevin Montgomery but Lisa had told Kevin that her ex-husband was a compulsive liar who would say anything to break up their marriage and get her back. Cops also discovered evidence that Lisa Montgomery was stalking several other pregnant women. Less than 2 full days after the brutal murder of Bobbi Jo Stinnett her daughter was found (in the arms of Lisa Montgomery) by tracking the person who was meeting Bobbi Jo Stinnett to buy a puppy when she was ambushed and murdered. Once arrested Lisa Montgomery tearfully confessed to murdering Stinnett and kidnapping her baby. Once she was charged with kidnapping resulting in death, a capital crime she retracted her confession and went to trial. Lisa Montgomery lost at trial and was sentenced to death. Currently the only female federal prisoner on Death Row

MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT

This book was a waste of money. The story is interesting but the book I got had many typos and errors, no page numbers and the story was about 10 pages long and the rest of the book(15 pages) was a completely different story.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

A complex Billion-Dollar Scheme explained in simple terms, as well as insight into how the Feds found it and the challenges in trying to take it down, Every break in the case seemed to run into new snags and hurdles.

One of the best true crime books I've listened to

Would you listen to Serial Killers Rage and Horror again? Why?

Yes, I'm sure I will. This was one of the best I've listened to or read. Some of the cases were familiar to me and there were some I don't remember hearing about. The author goes into good detail about the killers and what led up to their crimes. He even includes some information about the victims as well. This book was very well written and contains more information than I expected.

Have you listened to any of David L. Whites other performances before? How does this one compare?

I'm not sure if I have listened to David L. White before or not but I did like his narration. He was clear and not overly dramatic.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Being a book about killers and their victims, all of the stories were sad.

This was well worth the listen and I would recommend it to anyone who has any interest in this topic. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher. However, I would not have been the least bit disappointed had I paid for this book.

Short Form True Crime

Jack Rosewood is a total expert at telling these true crime stories (and in this case Rebecca Lo, as well!). With just the right amount of detail, enough to satisfy but not too much to bore, this series is well crafted. David L. White does a good job with narration. If you enjoy short form true crime, then this is a collection for you!
