With a hoarde of money on which to survive, Drake hops a ship of indentured servants to America only to be robbed and taken ill by the merciless sea voyage.
In Pennsylvania, Serena Winter is a humble, devoted Quaker on a mission of mercy, tending the sick aboard a ship that has just arrived from England. Taken by Drake's air of dark mystery as he serve as an apprentice to her silversmith father, Serena falls in love and is excommunicated when she accepts a non-Quaker's marriage proposal. Not knowing Drake's history, Serena is later shocked to discover her new status as a duchess.

    Very enjoyable listen.
I think I enjoyed the narrator as much as the story line in this book. I didn't realize that this was a Christian Historical Romance and was plesantly surprised. I like how Drake the main character completely changed his view on humanity. I read a lot of Christian fiction and I will add this author to my list. I wish I knew who narrated this book.
    Very interesting book
I like this book a lot: there are deep describing of characters, their inner world, there relations with God, their fears...It is described very real. There is humour and adventures and it is difficult to say what the end will be.
A wonderful story & a great audio performance
This has a charming balance of character and a character driven story. The first chapter is a little baffling but as the story unfolds it fits. I hope this author has more books come to audible format. As to the reader, this is the best audio performance I have heard. This voice fits romance fiction well and I hope he reads more for Audible.
    A Little Dismayed
I love reading about how our ancestors provided healthcare during the building of this nation. Some of the actions taken didn't seem quite realistic for the times. When the Quaker lady sat on the cot beside the sick man and he ran his hand along her jaw and touched her lips, I felt sickened. Especially since this took place in the hold of the ship and he was delirious and ravaged with disease. All I could think of was, lice, feces, vomitus, and urine on that cot and on him ( and now on her mouth).
I picked this book because I like Christian based historical romances with an inspirational message, but lust seemed to overwhelm the story so I turned it off.

DON'T OVERLOOK THIS SHORT STEAMING MEDIEVAL STORY
Blaze books often seem to get overlooked for more 'substantial' novels but I took a chance as I just love beefy handsome men in kilts (I know - I'm beyond redemption!!).
Well, what a great find - totally implausible raunchy plot (but good anyway), likeable characters, good sub-plots, sexy Highlanders and, of course, lots and lots of sex.
Worth a credit? Even tho it's just 6 hrs long I'd say a definite YES, but if you can't take the 'heat' in your historical romances or need them to be historically acurate then don't buy this.
    Nice!
I like a bit of historical erotica!!
I love the fact that the laird was a woman... then she kidnapped her hunky highlander... a plus! Great story... nice smexy romance...
    Good credit or sale...
Narration was pretty darn good too!
    Sensual Highland Romance
A chance meeting at fair day led to a promise between the children of two rival clans. A promise to wed when they were old enough and to take no other as their husband/wife. But in the case of Brianna MacLeod she's given no choice by her father but to wed her cousin as she's the Laird to be for her clan.
When her husband is killed, seemingly by Ewan Fraser's brother, and she loses not only her father from an illness, but the baby within her, she plans on revenge. A revenge that will give her a child and perhaps bring an end to the battles between the clans.
What she didn't count on was how sexy her childhood promised husband would be.
As for Ewan... Brianna is everything he's dreamed of in a woman. But he isn't going to let his heart melt. She broke her promise to him. Not just that but didn't even have the courage to respond to his letters. She might take his seed, as his body isn't opposed to the idea, but not his heart.
A sensual highland romance and the narrator managed to bring life to the romance and connection between the two.
    Too Short!
I love books featuring the Scottish highlands, so this book was very enjoyable to me. It just wasn't long enough. It needed to flesh out Columb and Alice's relationship a bit more.
The narrator also could have been a little better with her accent and character distinction, but all-in-all it was a good listen. If you like this sort of book, check out the Highland series by Karen Marie Moning. Great stuff!
Bound To Please is a short but sweet treasure
Brianna MacLeod and Ewan Fraser met at a gathering as very young teens. They capture each others heart. They promise to marry but evil doers who are plotting to destroy Brianna family keep them apart. Flash forward 10 years and Brianna is now the new laird of her clan and she wants a child to help establish her position, so she kidnaps her long ago love Ewan. That is when all the fun starts. This story is packed with emotion and romance.

    Editorial Reviews:
Charlotte Parry gives a captivating performance of New York Times best-selling author Victoria Alexander's novel Secrets of a Proper Lady. Lady Cordelia Bannister wants to follow her heart, but her father wants her to marry Daniel Sinclair. She disguises herself and meets with his secretary. Meanwhile, Daniel is one of four men involved with a wager to avoid matrimony - hes nearly won, and hes been enjoying his time as an eligible bachelor. This is a love story rife with mistaken identities and miscommunication. Will the pair find happiness together?

    mixed feelings
I have mixed feelings about Secrets of a Proper Lady. First, I have to agree with the other reviewers - it was very disconcerting for the hero's voice to be pitched higher than any other character. At first I thought maybe the narrator just didn't differentiate much between characters, and was using her own voice for all of them, but her other male voices were pitched a little lower, and she did seem to have control of all the different character voices. The hero's voice, in fact, seemed even higher and girlier than the heroine's. I tried to get over it - really, the narrator wasn't bad, and she slipped from American to British accents back and forth very fluidly, but sheesh, give us a manly hero, please!
Second, while I enjoyed most of the story, I thought the heroine walked a thin line between feisty/independent and TSTL (too stupid to live) and she stepped way over into stupid at the end, in my opinion. You know the type, where you find yourself saying NO DON'T DO THAT out loud while you listen. That indeed made it go from a solid 4-star to a barely 3-star for me. I didn't quite go as far as ripping the earphones out and yelling, as I have with some (the audio equivalent of a Wall Banger book). It didn't actually ruin the book for me, but it was frustrating.
The tea-party 2nd epilogue didn't quite work for me as this was my first book by this author, but was a fun idea and helped me slightly get over my feelings about the heroine at the end of the book. If you've read several of this author's books already, you might enjoy it more.

    Excellent
I enjoyed this book very much! I thought the narrator did an excellent job. I accidentally started with book 3 but did not feel like I started in the middle of something.
    LOVED!!
Suzanne Toren is one of my favorite narrators. She can make any book come to life, not that this book needed any help. Great story, it was sweet, spiritual and funny. I think it was my favorite book in the series. Im very thankful good, clean, spiritual books are being written and written well. God is good!
    why a three
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
honestly not even sure why i'm giving it a three and not a two or a one, maybe because i'm a fan of the authors.. and figured I must have missed something due to the performance. Wouldn't recommend
How could the performance have been better?
Not that she was hard to listen to, but her dramatization of the characters made the main girl seem so whiney I hated her from the start, and her eventual love interest, and character I did like, but the voice made him seem so much older and gruff it was hard to imagine them ever being together.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    unlikely
    Disappointed
The story began well, but often moved slowly. I also became a little confused with all of the political players in the story. I was disappointed with the performance. The narrator's voice was very smooth most of the time, but when it came to the main character's voice it had an effect of fingernails on a chalkboard. This continued until midway through the story when the narrator suddenly changes the character's voice to a smoother sounding one. Sometimes all of the male characters sounded the same in a dialogue, which made it hard to figure out exactly who was speaking. Also, if you don't like cliff-hangers, you will hate this book. Sorry for the spoiler, but I wished I had known that the book had no resolution before I listened to it. I am just one of those people who likes self-contained books, so this knowledge would have been beneficial before I purchased the book.
    Story probably better than performance
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The narrator did a terrible job with her character voices. Her accents were too forced. Sarafina sounded like a smurf. I really think I would like this story if it weren't for the narrator.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Sarafina. She was the heroine.
How could the performance have been better?
    YES.

Not a Romance by any definition
I can't begin to say how disappointed I was with this book.
First, I bought it not realizing it was supposed to be a "Christian" romance.
That was fine, once I realized it. What was not fine was the distinct impression I had that the author had been led by some third party to change the essential plot device in order to fit some unknown set of requirements.
Third, an opportunity to show redemption and salvation to a nefarious character, it was discarded without enough explanation as to why.
Fourth - a Romance always has a happy ending. If it doesn't, it isn't a romance.
The author needs a new editor, I think, or a new publisher.
    Really awful
The message in the Christian book is a mess. The main character is told by others that God loves loves in spite of a youthful mistake and her unique spirit. What is shown however, is that she must atone for her "sin." The real sinner in the story gets no chance for redemption.
    Spoilers----
The elders of the church, should've been smacked in the head with first stone! Instead she doesn't marry the pastor, not just because she doesn't love him, but because her hats and having sex once will cause trouble with the deacons.
This is stupid on many levels. MC is beloved by all. How can she be beloved and a scarlet woman that's not good enough for the pastor unless she gives up her hats and evil bicycle? It's important to show not tell. This might be a good beginning of a Christain romance, but without the redemption or HEA- it isn't Christian or a romance.
Not Worth The Listen or Dough
This book had neither passion nor sex. Instead it was a religious book masquerading as a romance novel. The main character was sweet but dippy, and the suitors were jerks. Save your dough!

    Members Reviews:
    Wonderful story with great characters
This book was even better than the first in the series. Though I really liked the first book, this book flowed a bit more naturally. This book is filled with such great characters. I absolutely LOVED Christine. I love how she is strong and not afraid to speak out for what is right. I love that this is a "clean" romance. When I was listening to the audiobook, I didn't have to worry about my kids overhearing something that they shouldn't. The narrator of this book, Carolyn Kashner, really impressed me with her ability to do accents. Overall, this book is really entertaining and if you like romance of the clean variety, I highly recommend this book (as well as the others in the series)
    The story continues
Book 2 of the series, this one takes place several years later. Now the Kingsmen are starting trouble. Wanting to take over Cordovia and bring back the strict and hateful rule to the land. It will not happen as Austin Knight--known to a few as the Highwayman--and Christine, the friend of Robin and Daniel and the pastor's daughter work together to defeat the Kingsmen from taking over. Thus a wonderful story of courage, strength, and determination is weaved, leaving, in the end, two people who realize in their hearts that they are meant to be.
Once again, Linda Weaver Clarke enchants you with a wonderful story that gives you a laugh here and there and leaves you unwilling to turn the audiobook off. Whether you listen to this tell or prefer to read it, you will enjoy it immensely.
    Entertaining Robin Hood-Type Adventure
The Highwaymen of Cordovia by Linda Weaver Clarke continues the adventures that started in The Rebels of Cordovia, an entertaining Robin Hood-type saga. In the first book, we met the daughter of a local baker, Robin, who secretly taught a small group of vigilantes to fight for basic freedoms against a tyrant king who taxed his subjects into extreme poverty. In the second book, we meet the daughter of a preacher, Christine, who besides her daily chores and visits to the less fortunate, she writes articles that reveal corruption that remain in the upper classes after the kings exile, especially in a group that call themselves The Kingsman.
This story basically begins when Christines borrowed carriage is accosted by a group of highwaymen who attempt to steal valuables from her. Thankfully, these highwaymen are truly like the legendary Robin Hood, who only steal from the rich and give what they steal back to the poor.

Master storyteller Colleen McCullough imagines a life for Mary Bennet 20 years after the events of Jane Austen's novel. Highly Recommended
I was absolutely delighted with Colleen McCullough's continuation of the classic story of Pride & Prejudice. As I am such a great fan of P & P,I was skeptical at first but thoroughly enjoyed the story! Nicki Paull (Reader)executed the various characters beautifully! Highly Recommended
Independence for at least one Bennet
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this book to a friend because I thought it was really well written and a great audible.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the follow-on from Sense and Sensibility and Colleen McCullough did a grand job with it.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I had many favourite scenes in this book.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes I wanted to listen to it all day
    Any additional comments?
I enjoyed the history associated with this story. Sometimes it was a little wordy but I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it.
    Only a fan would enjoy.
The style is in a similar vein to that used by Miss Austen - slow and ponderous. The characters are recognisable. Time has not made them any more pleasant than when Jane Austen first wrote about them!! Given I am not a huge fan of Austen novels I am not sure why I would choose to buy a sequel. Having finished listening to it I am even less sure of why I bothered!! In true Colleen McCullough fashion I concede it is well written with a good use of English and she pays due respect to the characterisation created by Jane Austen 200 years ago. If you like this style of writing then I am sure you will enjoy this book.
Clever extension of Pride and Prejudice.
    Well worth a read!
I am so glad I got over my initial disappointment when I started listening because it really was a terrific story. It is worthwhile persisting and allowing it to flow. Colleen McCullough has written a beautifully crafted tale following on from Pride and Prejudice. I thought the narrator Nicki Paull had difficulty with some of the Darcy masculine voices but it did not take away from the enjoyment of this story. Highly recommended.
    Highly Recommend
This book is wonderful in every way...wish it never ended! Beautifully narrated with the different accents.

    Could not stop listening!!
Wow! I just loved this book! At first I thought the accent might be cheesy, but after sticking with it for the first couple chapters I was transfixed!! The narrators performance was amazing and the love story was so moving. Julianne Maclean is such a magnificent storyteller!
    Ugh...how annoying
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
    The plot was annoying.
What was most disappointing about Julianne MacLeans story?
The entire book was the heroine proving she was worthy of her husband, not the other way around.
What does Anne Flosnik bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I think Ann Flosnik does a good job with narrations. I have her Karen Robards books and I just finished Kushiels dart. I never have thought anything of her performance before. I think i find fault because The constant whining of the main character grated on my nerves.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I like the idea of a fairy tale with princess and a prince. This was why I bought the book. This story was definitely not something I got caught up with.
