Fly-on-the -wall coaching session with Tricia, who, has a bachelor's in math education. 

Tricia graduated in 1999. She has balanced a career, family, and returning to Education after an absence and home relocation.

Her desire to teach was driven by her own struggle as a young student.  She experienced  teachers that didn't have the strategies for her to be successful.

In 2011 she expanded to teach students in special education. It brought her back to that purpose of giving strategies to those with greatest need.

Tricia began exploring careers 2 years ago. She realized teaching is becoming more and more civic responsibility.  It was apparent to her when the pandemic hit and the news focused on students being out of school with a lack of food,  abusive houses, strain on mental well being during extended at home times. Little was said about the content of education.

She realized her  degree in education was outdated.  Her experience was all in teaching. It would have meant a massive pay cut to transition into entry level.   

So now with a Masters Degree on the horizon,  can she manage her time?

Alicia entered the world of international school teaching in 2010, straight out of university and never looked back. She loves the challenges of living in and getting to know new cultures.

 Teaching students from all over the world with different experiences and perspectives has been a wonderful experience. Unfortunately, after being unappreciated and worn down by poor, uncaring administration and the stressful and difficult situation she is in because of COVID-19, Alicia is taking the opportunity to exit teaching and pursue a new career.  

 She is exploring opportunities that allow her to continue to work with children and families who live abroad outside of their home cultures, before, during and after the transition to a new place.  

 Alicia supports "Expat Families" to leave well, arrive well and live well in their new cultures through 1:1, family, and small group coaching programs, debriefs, and workshops.

This is a recording of a 10 min triage call with Shelley, who generously allowed me to record our conversation.

Shelley is a teacher from the USA who got into teaching to help students and to give underprivileged students opportunities. She taught a year abroad in Spain on a Fulbright grant, and has taught here in the US for one year. 

She began to consider leaving teaching after the Covid pandemic hit. She felt that teachers are highly educated, yet overworked and sorely underpaid. She also knew that teaching was detrimental to her mental health. 

She is still currently teaching and is considering a transition out of teaching. However, she has not yet been able to teach history full time yet—one major push for her becoming a teacher. 

She hopes to continue teaching in the meantime until she has given that dream job a go. Hopefully it works out, but she’s open to all kinds of career possibilities.

Leisa is a casual teacher living her best life on the beach on the south coast of NSW, Australia

Leisa trained as a teacher as it seemed the right thing to do at the time. Both her parents were teachers. She’s still teaching 30 years on, but has never really loved it, staying in Education due to a strong sense of duty, financial reasons and hoping things would change.

The only thing she truly loved was exercise and got far more fulfillment from that. She trained as a gym instructor and became a Personal Trainer, but it wasn’t enough to pay the bills when she was a single mum. So back to teaching she went. 

These days she prefers a life of ease which casual teaching allows without the responsibilities and pressures of permanent work.

She prefers a happy and peaceful life by the beach with her dog Ruby and loves exercise and working on self-improvement daily, but Leisa is still looking for the ‘dream job’.

Sally completed a Bachelor of Science and needed a secure career path, so a natural fit was to complete a Diploma of Education. Her mother, aunt, uncle and great grandparents were all teachers so education as a career pathway was always an option.

Sally is in a transition phase.  She hasn't left teaching but has dropped to part time employment. With her spare time, she redirected her energy and retrained as a Life and Health Coach, Hypnotherapist, Soul Regression Therapist and Forensic Healer.

Her recent achievement is launching the business Heal, Lead and Teach.

After completing a degree in Environmental Science, Mary worked in a variety of jobs. Her love of travelling took her to South Korea where she worked as an English teacher. When she came back, she studied and became a primary school teacher. For the last fifteen years Mary has been teaching and in particular loved working with students from a refugee background where she felt, she truly made a difference.

Mary decided to get out of teaching because she felt the nature of teaching was changing from a community environment to a competitive one. As a teacher she felt devalued, deflated, defeated, demoralised, ‘de –everything’.

In January, Mary discovered Elizabeth’s podcasts and was inspired by listening to teacher’s stories and their journey into other careers. She is at the beginning of her coaching with Elizabeth and is working as a casual teacher while she discovers a world of other opportunities.

Vonnie began her dream job, teaching in a small primary school in 1981. This job finished with the birth of her first child. After years of raising her seven children and voluntarily organising school fundraisers, she began casual teaching at a high school. 

This quickly led to a permanent teaching position. Over fifteen years, Vonnie honed her event preparation skills, fundraising for school charities and producing school musicals even after she had resigned to become a casual supply teacher. 

Her third son’s passion for metal music saw Vonnie, her husband and her son organise many live music shows over the years.

By 2016, Vonnie realised she needed to work towards her newly realised dream of teaching others to plan and run amazing events. The plan is still coming to fruition. Vonnie is expanding her studies and has spent 2021 to date as a wedding planner extraordinaire for three of her children.

Laura Roberts - Leadership Coach for Educators.

Laura became a teacher because she loved school, learning and working with young adults. It also meant she could travel and explore the world. With over 20 years of educational experience, Laura has been a successful teacher, Head Teacher, Deputy Principal, Principal as well as working in Corporate in change management.

Laura decided to get out of teaching because the negative was starting to outweighing the positive and she needed a change. Laura still wanted to positively contribute to a profession she loved and share knowledge learnt over her career and discovered leadership coaching.

Since beginning her coaching journey, Laura has coached principals in Australia, the USA and New Zealand and coached teachers in successfully gaining promotional positions. Laura is currently studying to be a counsellor because sometimes an educator needs a counsellor instead of a coach.

She is an experienced educator and school leader who can help aspiring leaders and leaders discover the power of courage to lead schools so that teachers and students thrive.
