    Title: Job Interviewers
    Subtitle: Get Inside Their Heads
    Author: Jack Dermody
Narrator: Al Merritt, Cydney Trent, Jack Dermody
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 59 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-15-13
    Publisher: John Dermody
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Business, Career Skills
    Publisher's Summary:
Do you want to know the 40 real questions that job interviewers have in their minds? I know what you are thinking. How can anyone read another person's mind? Well, the secret hides in the reality that there are only four kinds of interviewers.
Imagine that you will make it easy for job interviewers to like you. Do you know that, if you can speak respectfully to just four personality types, you hold in your hand the key to have a powerful persuasive edge over most people? So are you curious about the four types? They are the Careful, Expert, Impulsive, and Idealist.
You've already been to interviews, right? Do you worry you are not hired because you are not "the right fit"? Are you wondering if interviewers might not like you because of your personality? WAKE UP! Most of the time, hiring decisions really are based on "the best fit." And, yes, your personality matters. Your personality can work for you and against you and you don't even realize it. Job Interviewers: Get Inside Their Heads clearly exposes the plusses and minuses of your own personality, as well as the personalities of your interviewers. You will learn to confidently interface your personal system of values and strengths with those of your interviewers. You will reach out them clearly. And they will feel that you "somehow" think exactly like they do. You now have the option to walk into a room full of interviewers with confidence and your own personal power.

    Clear, concise book.
"Job Interviewers" by Jack Dermody is professional and engaging simultaneously. It is full of useful tips and information, presented in a clear manner. I used this book as a reference not only while applying for work, but presenting myself in any social or networking situation, and it has given me confidence in interpreting my own and other people's methods of interaction. At first I found the main narrative voice to be too deliberate, but then as I listened to the book on my way to my first set of job interviews, I discovered the voice was perfect for imparting information in a calm manner that helped embed the material in my brain.
Even though the title is job-related, I would also recommend "Job Interviewers" for anyone who wants to understand the systems behind human interaction and communication.
Well written, contains a plethora of information.
What made the experience of listening to Job Interviewers the most enjoyable?
Dermody wrote this book based on his Four Windows system of personality types. If you are interviewing for your first decent job, I recommend learning what Dermody is offering. Not only will it help you get the job, but it will help you understand your boss and, more important, how to advance within the company by understanding the people you work with.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Job Interviewers?
Now, full disclosure. The author is a friend who invited me to review the audio version of his book, but I am not giving him a free pass. Early in the listening process I discovered I am an Expert, one of the four personality types in Dermodys system. An Expert, among other traits, is one who wants to know whats in it for him and hopes he or she doesnt have to deal with a lot of information he or she is not interested in. So, from my perspective, I prefer a condensed version of this book.

Subtitle: Finding Your Best Competitive Self
    Author: David Apostolico
    Narrator: Alpha Trivette
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 44 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-31-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Business, Career Skills
    Publisher's Summary:
Told from the viewpoint of a self-described competition junkie, Compete, Play, Win is a look at the psychology behind the competitive drive, a look at the sociological ramifications of acting on competitive impulses, and a book of advice on how to channel those impulses for personal gain in business, sport, and in life.
In a chapter called Sperm Wars, author David Apostolico pinpoints conception as the beginning of our competitive nature, and discusses the competition for a mate that precedes that, setting up the idea that competition is a biological necessity, and evolution has embraced and modified that drive. In a later chapter called Competitive Nation, Apostolico uses himself as a test subject, entering a far-flung variety of contests (including competitive eating contests, dog shows, and drag races), in order to test how far he, as a competitive junkie, is willing to go for victory. At the end of each event, he answers a list of 10 questions, concluding with, Can a competitive junkie ever feel truly satisfied?
Along this personal journey, Apostolico draws parallels between personal competition and competition in the business world, and imparts his firsthand knowledge of how to use the competitive drive to win at everything you do.
    Editorial Reviews:
Competition is the driving force behind almost everything in our society, whether we're chasing a job, a love interest, or trying to eat more hot dogs than the person next to us. According to self-proclaimed competition junkie David Apostolico, however, our competitive spirit could always use a little refining. In this audiobook, performed in earnest by actor Alpha Trivette, listeners will explore the basic science behind our competitive drive, the ramifications of our competitive impulses, and how to hone those impulses. Apostolico's Compete, Play, Win is a fun and informational account of one man's journey to become his best competitive self.

How to use the human nature of competitiveness
This book is written by self-professed competition junkie. The author shares his thoughts on how to use the human nature of competitiveness to bring out the best in yourself. He makes it entertaining recollecting stories from his past and as well as using other people to illustrate his points. The book quick and easy read. If you lead a team (in sports or business or whatever you can pick up some inspirational ideas of what to you say to your team when they need encouragement.

    Sort of interesting...
This book has some points but is very, very redundant. I think once you read about the three types of competitors you've gotten everything useful and interesting in this book.
    Five Stars
    great, would order again
    Everyone should read this book!
This book caught my eye and I picked it up this week. I quickly learned that it is a must read for my three twenty-something children. In these competitive times and poor economy we all need a competitive edge. And, it is an enjoyable read as well. The author shares some amusing tales of his childhood and formative years. I highly recommend Compete, Play, Win!
    Quite good advice
For a free download this was worth a read.
It is quite well written and much of the content was quite interesting.

    Title: Surviving the Transition

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 41 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-11-12
    Publisher: WMG Publishing Incorporated
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Business, Career Skills
    Publisher's Summary:
Most writers run their careers the same way they did in the 1990s. But publishing has changed so much since then that any writer who works on the old model will no longer make a living. In this short audiobook, international best-selling writer Kristine Kathryn Rusch shows you how to think about the new world of publishing, who to trust, and who not to trust. She also gives you a blueprint for survival - what to learn, what to ignore, and how to find help. If you are a successful professional writer - or hope to become one - then this book is for you.
    Critic Reviews:
"Not many people understand the publishing business as well as the author business - Kris Rusch is one of them." (Kevin J. Anderson, New York Times best-selling author)
"Kristine Kathryn Rusch still knows twice what I do about writing and publishing. Good thing she's put all her wisdom down in a book so I can start stealing some of it." (Steve Hockensmith, New York Times best-selling author)

    Giving Dinosaurs a Fighting Chance
Today's explosive changes in the written word have destroyed the old publishing models and the system built around them with unprecedented speed. Whether you are a new writer trying to find a way to get your words in print or an established writer struggling to comprehend just what HAPPENED to that formerly stable career of author -- this is the book for you. As the author of numerous books (Dragons of Autumn Twilight: Chronicles, Volume One (Dragonlance: Chronicles),Wayne of Gotham: A NovelandSong of the Dragon: The Annals of Drakis: Book One), and as a teacher of writing in my Scribe's Forge courses, I've watched and been a warrior in this battlefield of transition.
Rusch's concise book is a quick read and was surprisingly comforting. It is not a long tome but it contains what you need to know. It gave me the knowledge that I was not alone in this struggle but that with the appropriate caution and insights she offers, could turn a tragic winter of publishing into a new spring for all writers. I highly recommend this book to all of us who thought we knew how publishing worked and need to discover that all of it has changed.
    Riveting! Shocking!
Now that I have your attention, note that this is a must-read for new authors who are thinking of finding an agent and making lots of money from a fat publishing contract. The industry is changing radically, and a lot of new (and seasoned) authors are falling victim to the Hollywood effect taking over the publishing world: predatory publishers and agents taking cues from the movie industry to pocket all the earnings from creators' efforts. Meanwhile, there is a revolution going on in the self publishing world, and this is encouraging authors to find a back door to this trap, regaining some control and profit from their work.
The material here covers a volatile situation, and by this time next year the game will be radically different. I expect the book will be updated with each printing to cover new developments. Meanwhile, read this to get an idea how fast things are changing; and tune into Rusch's blog each week to catch up on new developments.

Writing in the Fast Lane and staying sane doing it
Note: This is a revised version of the book, The Common Sense Guide for Writers.
Life is magnificent, and it's tough.
For writers and other creative people, sometimes it is worse than tough, particularly when we're writing to sell-that's writing in the fast lane. We can lose our way or ourselves, forget who we are and why we are who we are. Limping down an unclear path riddled with obstacles and landmines gets daunting even for the heartiest of writers. We can get muddled and mired and confused-lost-and not even know it...for a time. But eventually we do realize we're lost, or that we've forgotten the reason we started writing in the first place, and then our basic instincts insist we find someone to blame.
    And so we do.
We blame our publisher, our editor or agent; our spouse or kids; our in-laws, parents and/or siblings. We blame a cover artist, a copyeditor, a critique partner, a peer - or, if necessary, a rushed salesclerk, a slow-moving driver or a harried postal worker.
We blame any and everyone except us.
Why do we do this us?
    More importantly . . .
How can we not do this to us?
Any writer or creative genius that wants a more fulfilled life can have one by:
    1. Thinking and making conscious decisions.
    2. Avoiding errors others have made because they got lost in the fast lane.
    3. Paying attention to those errors and consciously trying to avoid them constructively to preserve the human being in the writer.
    4. Exercising a little common sense and summoning your own inner courage.
    You supply the courage.
The rest of the above is offered here, beginning with Guidepost #1 in Writing in the Fast Lane.
The answers are in Writing in the Fast Lane.

    Audio book is painful
This review is for the audio book. I have never experienced such poor voice talent. So difficult to listen to...I've tried several times now and have just decided to give up. It's excruciating to listen to and believe me, I've listened to MANY audio books. The reader is stilted, pronounces words incorrectly, over-enunciating at times and then slurring words strangely together at others. Perhaps it's a weird editing job, but this voice actor has ruined what sounds like a perfectly fine book otherwise. Don't waste your money on the audio version.

Title: Gold Bubble: Profiting From Gold's Impending Collapse
    Author: Yoni Jacobs

Length: 9 hrs and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-03-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 9 votes
    Genres: Business, Career Skills
    Publisher's Summary:
How do TV shows, vending machines, Chinese taxi companies, and a former UK prime minister point to a gold bubble that is about to burst? Many investors consider gold a "safe haven" that will shelter them from recessions, falling markets, and the depreciating value of currency. Many fail to realize, however, that investing in gold at these levels is extremely risky. "We Buy Gold" stores line busy streets, gold miners are no longer protecting themselves from a potential drop in prices, and gold is even being sold in vending machines. All this points to one thing: a gold bubble has formed and will collapse very soon, hurting investors, funds, and banks.
In Gold Bubble: Profiting From Gold's Impending Collapse, Yoni Jacobs looks at how you can protect yourself. Presenting an in-depth analysis of gold dating back over a hundred years, the book explores the structural factors that have allowed gold to form a bubble, why an investor psychology of fear and greed is leading to extremely speculative behavior, why gold will fall during an upcoming recession, what effect the dollar and the stock market will have on the future of gold prices, and how to profit from a gold collapse while the majority of investors lose out.
With gold prices up over 2,500 percent since 1970, and more than 600 percent since 1999, a bubble has formed and is on the verge of bursting. But until now, no one has been willing to publicly bet against the universal currency. With Gold Bubble you are ready to meet this challenge head on, and take advantage of what other investors won't even acknowledge.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your My Library section along with the audio.

Gold is not in a bubble...... yet
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Not really since the author's premise is wrong. But is may be good for some people, especially if you are against the wisdom of gold for the long term. It will confirm your views.
Has Gold Bubble: Profiting From Gold's Impending Collapse turned you off from other books in this genre?
The book is well researched and he makes some compelling points. The problem is that he misses the whole idea of a bubble. "Overvalued" and a "bubble" are different things. Ultimately he claims that since he was able to identify Netflix when it was overvalued, he is an expert on identifying bubbles. There is a lot of good research in the book, but gold is not in a bubble. Look at it this way, a bubble is very easy to identify. A bubble is when everyone has it.

Must have, easy to read, informative.
I met Bob personally at the RWA conference in Seattle, 2011. He was approachable, friendly and helpful. Everything you want from a teacher. Prior to sitting with him for an, albeit short 1 on 1, I attended his 1/2 day seminar on the writers toolkit. I learned more from him in that 1/2 day than I did in the following 3 days. His manner of presenting information is straight forward, detailed, insightful, and interesting. All of this shines through brilliantly in his books. I have all three; Writers toolkit, Write it forward, and Write it forward: Writer's conference guide. I wish I had read this book before attending the conference. In any case. I highly recommend it.

Thoroughly enjoying the Writer's Conference Guide. Definitely a good resource for those who have either never been to a conference or want to make their conference going experience a more fulfilling one. One of the best ideas is thinking ahead before even purchasing your tickets and making sure the conference you are going to will fit your career goals. So well timed!
This book came at the right time for me! Was heading to my first RWA Nationals and everyone kept raging about being overwhelmed that I was concerned but this helped make my time there more successful and productive. Their insight was right on. Fabulous!
Best at how to plan your time at a writer's conference
Bob Mayer offers one of the only guides to maximizing the value of your time at a writer's conference. Use this guide to be sure you don't waste the opportunity and money spent at a conference.
Must-have book for every aspiring author
I highly recommend this book, especially since it was at a writer's conference where I met my publisher. We all know that these conferences are not cheap, and it's not only our money but also our time and energy that are put into attending them.
