Unusually Cool - CLASSIC. A Must Listen!
This is different. And isn't that what mystery zealots want? This is a laugh out loud caper thing full up with bad people who you can't help loving. Yep, everyone's so flawed that you're left free to decide who you want to root for, hell, I think I finally rooted for almost everyone.
Did I say "laugh out loud" Uh-huh, Perry has the power to cloud your mind with giggles. And yet he manages it with throw-away lines while still cranking out a plot with twists that leave a veteran mystery reader satisfied. And we're a hard-to-satisfy bunch, right?
Michael Kramer has the genius ability to become invisible as a reader-actor creating vivid characters that are about the plot, not him.
This book must he a classic. If it isn't, I'm declaring it to be. Yep.. this is a classic caper that you'll smile all the way through.
Oh, one tiny gripe, the very very.. end was oddly dumb. I wonder why Perry appended those few paragraphs. Oh well, no matter It's just a fine piece of writing overall.
    Laugh Out Loud Funny!
I like the way Perry writes. I am not so in tune with his feminine side (Jane Whatshername), but the Butcher's Boy books we among the best I've found in the genre. Metzger's Dog petered out just a tad near the end, but until then I was bathed in some of the funniest ironic humor (just shy of sarcasm) in memory. The black, fearsome pall of the dog-beast is priceless! More, Mr. Perry, More!!!
Messrs. Perry and Kramer should get six stars.
Metzger's Dog is yet another triumph for Mr. Perry. I only know two authors who can effectively weave suspense and humor together: Mr. Perry and Tim Hallinan. Both have carved out unique niches for themselves. In this book Mr. Perry creates a whole raft of interesting new characters, he keeps us guessing and delighted throughout the book, and his humor is just sometimes LOL funny. At other times his humor can be rueful, sarcastic, warm, affectionate and anything else you can think of. All the guys like Nelson Demille, Tom Clancy and their peers approach the CIA in deadly earnest. I now would have a hard time going back to any of them. Mr. Perry creates a Keystone Kops aura around the CIA and makes vicious fun of the bureaucracy and the politics within. On the other side is a small group headed by Chinese Gordon and his soon-to-be-wife Margaret. Dr. Henry Metzger is Gordon's cat, and they adopt a gigantic and ludicrously ferocious dog during the caper. Mr. Perry could write a whole new series around these characters. His ingenuity and creativity are on show here, and one can only marvel at how far he pushes the envelope of this genre.

He hires Cordelia Gray, a fledgling detective, to investigate. And as she follows a trail of guilty secrets and shameful sins, she concludes that the nicest people do the nastiest things!
    Members Reviews:
    quite suitable
Having been left a struggling detective agency, 22-year old Cordelia Gray sets out on her first case to discover why Mark Callander killed himself. Along the way not only does she discover the reasons behind his death, but she comes up against some very curious circumstances which put her in danger. Toward the end Cordelia makes some decisions which put her directly in the path of Adam Dalgliesh, who makes a cameo appearance in the book. Overall, P.D. James does quite a suitable job in this book which now can be considered a period piece. But its age can't disguise the twists and turns that have made the author famous. Penelope Dellaporta reads the book with panache and a clear, crisp tone, keeping the English voices distinct. This is a definite plus in a book of this style. Don't let the age of the book keep you away. It's worth it.
    Engaging storytelling and a mystery
I really enjoyed listening to this book. I even liked the characters, who seemed very real.
This was my first PD James mystery, as I listed to another of her books, "Children of Men," and wanted a bit more. The detective Cordelia seemed very real, and not some super sleuth or bored aristocrat slumming it or wonder woman. You or I could be her, provided that we're practical unsentimental workaholics.
My only irritation was I couldn't seem to tell what year it was until later into the story. I couldn't imagine this taking place in the now, with some antiquated things in the book, so I thought it was post WW2. Well it was a little later than that and I had to readjust the image I had in that "theater of the mind" when I had to go late 60s.
    A Superior Narrator
What did you love best about An Unsuitable Job for a Woman?
aving read the Adam Dagliesh Detective novels I find that I have enjoyed Cordelia Gray as much if not more than Dagliesh. PD James once told an interviewer that if she had started writing Detective Novels today her detective would be a woman. It's too bad there are only two Cordelia Gray stories.
What about Penelope Dellaportas performance did you like?
Ms. Dellaporta is now the voice of PD James for me, and I would prefer all of her audiobooks performed by Ms. Dellaporta
    Any additional comments?
    Unsuitable
I am very surprised by the glowing reviews of this book. I like PD James and was looking forward to hearing her work read and be introduced to a new character other than A.D. It certainly was not badly written, on the contrary, if I were reviewing only beautifully written prose I would happily rate this much higher. I have decided not to try to re-listen to the relevant sections, but I cannot find a motive for what was done. If it was in there, it was very cleverly hidden in information that seemed to suggest there was no reason for the conduct. I did not terribly enjoy the narration and wondered why an elderly voice was chosen for a young woman's story. At first, I decided it really did not matter, but because of the aged voice there were many times I could not guess the age of the character. Again, it was not a deal breaker so to speak, but I thought it was odd.

    Publisher's Summary:
He is cold and calculating, the master of a twisted game. Even with Vito and Sophie hot on his trail, he will not stop. One more empty grave must be filled, and one last scream must be heard, the scream of an archaeologist who is too close for comfort and too near to resist.
    Critic Reviews:
"No one does twisted killers better than the awe-inspiring Rose. Her ability to ratchet up the creepy factor within an exciting procedural thriller makes her tops in her field. The real trick, however, is balancing out a great villain with strong heroes and heroines, which is exactly the case in this fear-inducing novel." (
    Romantic Times)
    Members Reviews:
    Sorry, Karen
Although, I prefer my romance sans horribly sadistic psycho-killer torture chambers,I liked 'Scream for me' very much. This was largely because of the very compeling hero who falls in love with a movingly troubled woman. Die for me only has the torture chambers. (In spades! If you like those, you won't go hungry.)
But! The protagonists are unappealing and their union manages to be both bizarre and dull. And, although Tavia is an excellent narrator, she doesn't really do either French or Italian and her perfomance is flat.
Maybe she was just as bored as I was. I can't care enough about any of it to finish.
    Sad face.
    Very well put together
Where does Die for Me rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
That's a tough question, Karen Rose is a great author and Tavia Gilbert is always exceptional. The story line is fascinating and I have no complaints
    wow
This is the first Karen Rose for me, and as soon as I finished this one I immediately came back for more. I actually found this because I love listening to Tavia Gilbert and went in to find something she narrated. I will be back for more of Karen Rose, as well as more from Tavia.
    Spectacular new find
Lucky enough to have a reviewer on a readers' loop whose sig line includes what she's listening to, Then later reviews it. She gave a ten out of ten for one of Karen Rose's suspense books, which is BIG for her. And when I asked, she told me she'd listened to it, and afterward took extra care in locking her doors. THAT is my kind of book. I didn't try that book, YET, because I read the recaps of them all, and this was the first. I'm now on the second, "I Can See You," and it's just as good if not better than the first. I LOVE the date/time stamps on every scene. Give such a creepy feeling of impending doom.
This is a great listen, and so is the second so far. By the time I'm done, I'm sure I'll have her entire audio list.
Excellent, excellent. And the reader MUST be great, because she's so good and her voice isn't intrusive, if that makes any sense. She has all of the accents down pat, all of the action down pat, and what makes her spectacular is she can make the villian sound SO normal and non-threatening when he has to be to lure in his victims.
    New, happy fan.
    Intense!
Great book, very intense! Karen Rose has a morbid mind though. At times, her scenes got so descriptive that you could feel a chill run down your spine. Very morbid torture scenes...beware.
There are so many elements going on that it made my head spin. Characters left and right.

    Daddy's Little Girl
Always enjoy Mary Higgins Clark. Makes a road trip go quickly!
    AHHH!!!
oh my gosh I absolutely love this book!!! if you are considering it I STRONGLY suggest it!!!!! such an amazing story and a very good way to pass the time by!!!!
    Excellent story. Excellent performance.
This story speaks about what happens to many families after a terrible tragedy.Thank you much.
Really? This is what all the fuss is about
What would have made Daddy's Little Girl better?
    A believable story.
What could Mary Higgins Clark have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
    Not been hackneyed and predictable.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Jan Maxwell?
I'll give her one more shot, but only one, to redeem herself.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
For most of the time it was laughter at the horribly badly conceived story. I waited for the narrator to be proven wrong at the end. My wait was in vain. I thought, a character this loathsome has to be shown to be full of it at the end. Nope. I think--and this is the part that really got me--that we were actually supposed to identify with her. Ha! She's arrogant and sloppy and conceited and has the worst instincts of any character I've ever encountered in a book. Really dreadful!
    Any additional comments?
I know verisimilitude isn't a high priority in books like this, but seriously, this was just plain dreadful. Any "investigative reporter" who behaves this unethically with such a complete agenda from the get go would be denied publication in any source shy of the National Enquirer. Maybe that's the intended audience. Nobody else would read this tripe and find it compelling.
    Best Of Mary Higgins Clark
Where does Daddy's Little Girl rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    Among top ten
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Not so much on the edge of my seat but kept my mind really busy
What about Jan Maxwells performance did you like?
She was able to fall into character very believably
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Rewarding!
    Any additional comments?
    Great mystery without vulgarity!

This book had me suck in from page one.The story line keep twisting and turning so much so that I didn't even suspect the villain to the very end. It is one of the best books I have ever read and highly recommend.
    WOW!
This was one of my favorite books! I really loved it! I was hooked from the start! Very easy listening!
    Great read
Entertaining as usual. Mary Higgins Clark never let's me down. I've read most all of her and her mother's novels.
    Great book!
Loved that I was totally surprised with the ending!! The narrator is wonderful! Love Mary Higgins Clark!
    Sad
I like this author and it's taken me a while to figure out why I didn't like this book. It's the narrator. Somehow, she made the story seem so sad and depressing and that feeling was overshadowing . I also found myself annoyed instead of sympathetic to the main character. Her unwillingness to tell her husband, and reluctance in getting a lawyer was frustrating. I wasn't able to develop enough empathy with her to make up for her lack of common sense.

I have purchased several books from audible.com and I have been very pleased with all of my selections until this purchase. The author attempts to help the reader visualize the scenarios by describing the sights, smells and feelings to extreme levels. For me, this did not add to the book, but made it go by very slowly. When I got finished with the book, I felt the entire storyline that was written, could have been condensed in two chapters.

    Members Reviews:
Too much detail, not enough flow
I am in the middle of this 'read' and keep skipping ahead, frankly I find it embarrassing it is so bad. It is poorly written, with too much detail of insignificant things. Plus I find it hard to believe that FBI characters (or anyone) would act this way.
The writer also jumps into new sections of the book, so it takes a minute to clue into what is happening. No flow and lack of interest.
I really can't wait for this book to be over.
    Fast Paced "run-of-the-mill" Cop Story
In short. A totally average book I'd give a C as a teacher.
It isn't a BAD book, it's just NOT a very good book. The editor was very judicious that, a few times I thought I'd gotten the abridged version as the scene changed so quickly I thought I'd missed something. But at two files and 12 hours I'm certain I got the whole book.
There's no new angle here, no quirky detective with a standard set of possible other killers to keep you wondering. But for a book titled The Maze I'd expect far more twists and turns (plot wise or even in and yes, pun intended with regard to this killer's M.O.)
    It has a run-of-the-mill romance.
Don't let the S.F. picture for a setting fool you, most the story could take place anywhere.
S.F. and ALL its charms, ("The Paris of America") having lived just south for the very romantic S.F. for 1/3 of my life. (At least she doesn't call it "Frisco", a real no-no for the locals). But, there's nary a single feature of S.F. mentioned (The notorious Alcatraz prison island does get a line.). At the price I bought it, (marked way down to $4.95) it was a bargain.
This book is NOT worth an entire credit or significant bucks, not with SO MANY quality thrillers out there The Maze is simple escapist reading, I'd name some "PRO" authors but that's against the rules I think.
One slight GOOD and unique note on the audio production. The sound engineer made phone calls SOUND "phone callish" with a slightly "tinny" quality. It added some realism and clarified easily who was the distant one and while the local voice was normal.
Bottom Line: If you want QUALITY buy the big names (male or female writers) which, in comparison this writing pales.
    Not worth it
Very long, rambling and somewhat preposterous mystery. The reader frequently talks too rapidly as well.
