Must Read

I always enjoy this series of books and wasn't disappointed here either. It was interesting enough to keep me going with the unabridged version because there were so many details and events. It's one I will keep in my library to listen to again later.

A fun mystery...

This was fun to listen to, but its certainly not a classic. It has a real soap opera feel to it. If it were made into a movie it would be destined for the Lifetime Channel.

Great pacing, dark, wonderful narrator

This was my first Tess Gerritsen, and I enjoyed it. The Mephisto Club's members search for actual evil in the form of Nephilim, the descendants of fallen angels and man, inspired by the book of Enoch. The main characters were well developed, and the plots were very well paced.

I had two main issues with the book. First, even though most of the plot lines were wrapping up quite nicely, the ending was too abrupt. Second, the scholars that were consulted dragged out everything they were saying, and while this could arguably have been character choices, all of the scholars consulted did it, so these parts felt like info dumps from cardboard cut outs. Thankfully, the main characters didn't consult them often, and the story took over.

Fast paced, well plotted, great narrator.

Praise when praise is due

I am often critical of the many audio books I have listened to over the years.... critical in the negative sense. So my praise of this story and author is significant for myself if no one else.

The story was very intricately woven into a very believable suspense yarn. The "weaving" of anthropological myths or truths was very appealing and gave substance to the story.

I unequivocally state that it gave me as much enjoyment as the Da Vinci Code and believe we will see the story in cinematic format.

This is definitely a page-turner with a very clever and intricate plot, lurking you into the fictional world with half-reality. Some unexpected twists added flavour to the story.

As to the narrator, Jeff Harding is brilliant. Every character has its unique voice and he's really good at putting on different accents! I especially like the voice of the female characters coz they did sound like a female voice, unlike other narrators! However, I do have to complain that all the female voices are a bit on the soft side, making it difficult to hear the words.

Jeff Hardling has narrated a lot of books but Audible only has 2 of his! Can we have more please?

All the hype is worth it

Much better than the movie because it's all there - highly recommend this title on audio format

Interesting and entertaining

Full of fascinating facts, this one is an easy read that is hard to put down. It is not super deep but I found it really entertaining.

I loved loved loved this book when I read the paperback. I was sooooooooooo looking forward to listening to it. I managed to last 3 chapters until the god awful narrator drove me to madness with the dreadful "French" accent and "female" voice. I am sorry I wasted my free credit but it was a salutary lesson to always listen to the audio sample before I purchase and download a book. I gave five stars to the story because despite this it is still fabulous book.

Too many reviewers seem to miss the point.

Don't be scared off by reviewers who expected a formulaic clone, and are angry they got something more complex and nuanced.

All of the vitriol in other reviews seems to come from expectations that as a reader, you deserve clear solutions; that you shouldn't be left to speculate, or actually made to think about a story; that the answer should be spelled out in nice big letters. It would be a shame to see this gem tossed aside because it's not enough like other books.

To start with, this is not a mystery story. It is a story about the nature of mysteries. The point of the novel is not to tell the story of an unexplained death; it's to tell the story of the story, it's impact on those who hear it, and to explore how unanswered questions affect us.

It's fantasy to think that every mystery can be solved, that every loose end can be neatly tied up, and that every story has a tidy ending. This one doesn't, and it's a much better book because of it. Go in to this audiobook with an open mind, and you're sure to enjoy it.

Gotcha!

King wrote the ultimate gotcha and did it masterfully. If you pick the book based on the cover art you are going to be disappointed. Try reading the story description and imagine how SK would deliver the ultimate, nonstereotypical mystery. Reader beware!! This book will make you think.

Come on - its the journey!

This book is made up of what Stephen King is famous for - developing characters that you get attached to. The hardest part about reading The Stand or The Dark Tower is when it ends and you have to say goodbye to all the characters you've become so accustomed to. If you're looking for a good mystery that has a clean beginning and end, go read Sherlock Holmes. If you want a short glimpse into the lives of two old men in a slow moving town and share their views of the world - you'll really enjoy this.

The story of a story

One of the earlier reviewers nailed this story perfectly. This is the story of a story. I have to admit that I am biased. I have read almost everything that Stephen King has written and there is very little that I didn't love. Taking that into account I enjoy this story most because of it's differences from the "normal" King story. The style is still very much King but the tale is unique among his works. All in all, this is a great story and well read, too.

CSI - Maine!

If you were judging a book by its cover you might think this is a "Mike Hammer" or "Sam Spade" type novel but you would be wrong. The best way to describe this booklet, is to imagine a CSI episode told to you by two old men who forget how the show ended.

Boring & Dissapointing

If you are a lawyer perhaps you would enjoy the constant droning on in legalese, for the rest of us this book is tedious. I listened in pain waiting for something interesting to happen it never did. Perhaps the writer is trying to expose how unfair & politically polluted our court system.Who knows? When I purchase a book I want to be entertained . This is not the book.

Long, Slow & Politically Liberal

A reverse tour through a 15 year old heinous murder with a laborious trip through the courts of appeal. A resound cry against he death penalty and a bashing of the American court system. Stereotypical race and gender players. Would have given it NO STAR if I could.

Great story! Mallory sounds like a crazy but very intersting cop. Liked the flow and the character development.

My opinion

The story line is very intriguing. I have one comment regarding the reading however. There was not enough pausing between scenes of times past and present, nor between scenes. It was rather difficult to follow. A bit longer pause between time changes and scenes would have made it better, in my opinion. Very good otherwise.

I miss Mallory...

I have read all the books I could find with this particular central character. I have always really enjoyed the hard edge to Mallory and the many facets to her character. I was disappointed in this book mainly because the Mallory I got to know didn't have the depth I'm used to seeing. Contrary to other reviews, I still found the book enjoyable, but I missed "that Mallory".

This book was O'Connel at her best. Well written, quick paced and gritty. A great read.

This is the first book that I have read by this author. I am now half way through the CD's and am astounded at the character build up, the emotional grasp of the characters, and the titilation as you are left with at each chapter. For instance, at the end of one chapter, a character is in a dark garage aware that someone is there with her. Several chapters later in the beginning of the chapter, this same character is now in a concrete tomb,trying to claw her way out and not knowing why she is there. I am already looking for more books by this author. I like her main character --strong, sharp, intelligent, sensitive, and kind. I can't wait to listen to more of her books. I recommend this book to highly.

I like this author but.....

This book has a good story line but seems drawn out. The Narrator is terrible. She sounds like a 12 year old reading a book with no feeling for the character. They all sound the same. I will continue to listen to books by this author but hopefully she'll change narrators.

Confounding Mystery

Dr. Maura Isles is a staple of Tess Gerritsen's writing, and in this tale, a body is found outside Maura's house, murdered. It is Maura. Except when Maura comes home, and the truth comes out: this isn't Maura, it's a twin sister she never knew she had.

But was Maura the target? And why was her sister trying to find her?

Dark and well paced, this book explores Maura's mostly unknown past up to this point, and has a well written delve into a very disturbed psychology or two. If you're a fan of psychological thrillers, this one definitely delivers, as Gerritsen usually does.

Average Story, bad narration

I found it very difficult to get into this story. The narration was so monotone, I had to struggle to stay awake and follow the story line. I would not purchase a book read by this narrator again.

Great book!

This is the 3rd book I've listened to of hers and this one was the best. It kept me on edge and looking over my shoulder.

Captivating--it hooks you!

I love it when I find an audio book that I can't stop listening to. This is one of them. I would find myself sitting in the car in the garage just to listen to more of it. The characters are richly described and "real". You will really like Kimberly and Mac, Quincy (her father) and Raney. The settings are so well described, you can almost smell them. And above all, the plot is tight and the mystery compelling. I highly recommend this book.

Book is EXCELLENT, Narration, not so good

I read some of the other reviews, and I agree with those who had a problem with the narrator. Her "voices" for male characters really is rather silly - sort of like a child trying to talk like a "grown up" on the phone. However, don't let this stop you from listening. Eventually, you'll get used to it, and focus on the book itself.

This has to be one of the better mystery novels I've listened to in a long while (aside from Nelson DeMille). The story was intense, graphic and rather nerve-racking in parts. The basic premise is a killer on the loose who stalks young women. He waits for them outside of a bar, lays nails near their car tires, and when they pull over for the flat, he offers to help. Once they are out of the car, he shoots them with a tranquilizer gun. He kills one girl, and plants clues on her as to where he will abandon the other. Then he leaves the other girl in a remote area with only a bottle of water and her wits to survive long enough for the detectives to find her IF they can interpret the clues correctly and in time.

The story is suspenseful and has some terrific twists. For once, I didn't figure out the killer ahead of time. Toward the end, I was crazy to know what would happen.. I couldn't stop listening to this story - bad narration or not. Give it a try and find out for yourself what a brilliant mystery writer Lisa Gardner is.

love the author...can't take the narrator

I LOVE this author!! however, I'm finding it tough to get through this book on audio..thinking of buying the paperback....her voice is so monotonous....doesn't change a bit between characters, or situations. I find myself rewinding because I'm spacing out.

A Fantastic

This is the latest in the Anna Pigeon mystery series. Each mystery is set in a National Park - this one takes place in Yosemite. Even if you haven't read the previous books in the series, you'll find this a great read! All the elements of a great mystery - action, twisting plots, inability to stop listening! Better yet, when you're finished (and hooked on Nevada Barr) you can go back and read the 10 or so books that precede this one!

More High Crimes

I love this series and have just about completed the entire collection! It's especially enjoyable when the location figures so prominently, becoming an active player in all the mayhem, and you really do feel as though you're on a retreat to one of many national park "islands". Plus, that Anna Pigeon is my hero! I love her middle-aged modus operandi, her slightly cynical take on life, and particularly her phone calls to her shrink sister, Molly. Even though Barr relies a bit much (for my taste anyway) on action scenes it is still a great read. Can't hardly wait for the next one!

quick moving and interesting

This is certainly not a novel for the ages, but it is a real good listen. A quick mystery with all the needed suspense and all the needed clues along the way, it kept my attention the whole way through. Just enough quick clever laughs, plenty of meanness in the bad guys and a decent plot. It moves along at a very exciting clip without too much extraneous information and never drags. it will never be discussed in a literature class, but it is a fun quick ride.

First time Navada Barr fan

This is my first Navada Barr read. I'm hooked on this National Park Ranger part time super sleuth, or is it the other way around.... Wonderful Sierra Nevada scenery fills the mind with a backdrop of comfortable and relaxing ease, but what a crime story! Anna blends into her character as a lodge waitress, and from that position, things begin to unravel around her. This is a must read.

I have not read a mystery for many years (Hardy Boys in High School), so I decided to get this one as a light summer read. The author's descriptions of Yosemite Valley and the surrounding mountians are impressive and accurate. As a frequent traveler to this area, I found the authors use of setting to be the most enjoyable aspect of the book. I will be considering more books by Nevada Barr.
