Ending fell flat

This book was a decent entry in the Millhone series but the story was too convoluted and hard to follow. Unlike some I love Judy Kaye and she made it worthwhile but the ending was just plain too far fetched and poorly written. Dana Jaffee returns in P is for peril.

What three words best describe Judy Kayes performance?

Her performance is okay except that she doesn't pronounce "Lompoc" and "San Luis Obispo" properly. Not a big deal unless you lived there. As a graduate of Lompoc High School, and Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo, I know the area well. So, here's the deal: Lompoc = Lom-poke, and San Luis Obispo = San Lewis Obispo. I know, I know, it may not seem logical about the Luis thing. People think because it's a town in the Southwest it should sound Spanish and perhaps it did, as in "Lewie". Once. Lompoc is mentioned from time to time in books and TV stories but only once have I heard it pronounced correctly. For this series, it's really important to get it right.

Not as good

I am a fan of Kathy Reich and have read all her books and listened to all available too but this was a disappontment. No real suspense, the science was nothing new and the romance was boring.

I also dislike this new narrator. She does not have the same kanck for accents that the previous narrator Kateherine Borowitz does.

Atrocious narration

The narration ruins this audiobook for several reasons. First, the accents are hideous. I spent most of my life in North Carolina and never heard anything resembling the "southern accents" in this audiobook. Even the most urban creatures such as pathologists and Charlotte detectives are assigned a backwoods drawl that is so poorly delivered that it borders on the comic.

Second, the mispronunciations are distracting and sometimes misleading. Place names are routinely mangled, even for relatively well-known cities such as Manteo. At one point the word decedent is repeatedly rendered as descendent.

Third, the delivery often goes astray distorting the meaning of the text. For instance at one point there is a discussion regarding lesions on the body of an airplane crash victim. The narrator delivers a passage in such a way that as to suggest that the victim did not have even one lesion on his face. It is abundantly clear from the context however that what the author intended to convey was that the victim did not have a face as a result of the violent deceleration trauma.

The problems with the delivery are legion; only a few are outlined above. Ms. Reichs is an engaging author. One would be well advised to skip this audio and pick up a copy of the paper version of this book.

VERY bare bones, indeed.

I didn't bother to download the unabridged version when it was offered at no further cost. The abridged version was quite tedious enough for me. No suspense. No plot twists. No intellectual challenges. Even the love interest was cornball and pedestrian. Yawn....

Good Reading

Tempe Brennan, as always, puts everything together in the last few pages. Entertaining, although sometimes it is hard to keep the characters straight.

Sorry I was wrong

I am sorry to say I did not give this reader much of a chance when I wrote my first review of this book. It was very different that the other James Lee Burke books I have read and did not seem to work for me. I recently tried it again and I now realize that once Mark Hammer got his characters developed his reading was not half bad. Not a good as Will Patton but not as bad as I first thought. As usual the story was great. James Lee Burke is one of the best writers of our age. My apologies to Mr Hammer.

Vigorously disagree with prior reviewer

Boy I relished the times when I could sneak away from my activities of daily living to listen to this book. The ambling sequencing of visual vignettes and the narrator's pace created a southern atmosphere which rang true and intentional. I was disappointed to learn that there is a different narrator on Burke's other books...though I say that not having heard the other narrator. Just thought he was quite adept at creating believeable vocal characterizations.

Stunning story

Once again James Lee Burke offers up a brilliant character study. This novel is also a great mystery. Mark Hammer's narration is captivating and will propel you into the swamps of Lousiana. Listen to Jolie Blon's Bounce only when you have time to finish without pause. It's that good.

Not history, not theology, just great fiction

Like most people (or so I suspect), I listened to this book after The Da Vinci Code, even though it was written earlier and takes place earlier. I can't understand why this earlier effort didn't win Brown the acclaim he deserves as a great mystery/thriller author. As with The Da Vinci Code, the Catholic Church is involved, and as with The Da Vinci Code, not all of the Vatican officials behave in a way that reflects glory and honor upon the Church and her Lord. But that's life, not just for the Church but for any large body of imperfect human beings.

The plot in this work is a bit less esoteric than in The Da Vinci Code, but in my view that strengthens the book as a work of literature, because the themes (science and religion, faith and knowledge, and perhaps most importantly, truth versus the avoidance of scandal) aren't upstaged by the brain-teasers.

I would like to warn off two classes of potential readers/listeners. First, if you are the sort of person who cannot distinguish between fictional background and historical fact, please don't buy this book. The world will be better off with fewer people making spiritual decisions (like whether to be a Catholic) based on plot lines in a piece of fiction. If you really think the sins of long-dead cardinals are relevant to your religious affiliation today, then at least learn about those sins from reliable works of history rather than a whodunnit.

Second, if you are the sort of person who can't bear to imagine, even hypothetically, that the Communion of Saints includes some very great sinners, and you're offended by any portrayal of a sin by a man of the cloth, please don't buy this book. Christians who place themselves in the latter category should probably spend more time reading the New Testament and paying attention to how unimpressively the Twelve acquitted themselves when God walked among them.

Definitely better than DaVinci

I was glad that this book was over, so I could catch a breath. It is absolutely non-stop action and it drags you along. I was afraid that like "DaVinci Code", it was going to let me down in the end, but he surprised me. The premise is a little bit shaky, but it doesn't go way beyond the realm of believability. The strength of the book is the author's solid research. I've been to Rome and I've been to many of the sites where the action takes place.

Not just suspend disbelief, but kill it dead!

Before I get to the main problem, I'll get out of the way that the narration was convincing, and the main character, Rachel, well enough presented that I was interested in following her through the story. Her "creation" Duffy Madison, on the other hand, was about as boring as it could get. Copperman has a series featuring an Asperger's protagonist, so having a similar one here is just too much. The other secondary characters were okay, but not especially impressive.

I wasn't all that drawn into the plot regarding a serial killer targeting mystery writers, but am willing to give a first book a bit of a pass as the focus is on setting up a series. However ... the Big Reveal as to the killer left me shouting "NOOOOOOOOO!" Since Audible doesn't have a feature to hide spoilers, the most I can say is that Duffy and the Bergen County authorities are Too Stupid to Live (to borrow a phrase used repeatedly by Rachel).

Most charitable thing I can say is that having a character come to life unexpectedly was a idea with possibililities, but poorly executed here. I'll stick with Samuel Hoenig instead.

Terrible book.

The main character is totally unrealistic. Her life is in danger.... so she goes to bed. Magical duct tape shows up after the author drills into your head over and over that there "was nothing in the room"

Waste of 9 hours.... i kept waiting for it to get better.... it didnt.

I got bored

I love Copperman's Haunted guesthouse series. They're funny, nothing too terrible happens the endings are always happy. They are fun entertainment between heavier and darker reads. So, I had the same expectations for this book.

My expectations were not met.

I didn't like the book's heroine, mystery writer Rachel Goldman. For someone who apparently is a able to make a living writing mystery books, she seems to have very little understanding of how investigations work, or any curiosity about how they work. When confronted with the news that someone is killing off mystery writers, she just wants to go home and work on her current book. It isn't until she becomes a target herself, that she begins to show some interest. Not, "Oh, my God, someone is trying to kill me" interest, instead "I just want to go home - alone" and pretend it's not happening kind of interest. At a minimum you would think that maybe she would think there might be book in it for her.

Cozies aren't meant to be taken all that seriously, I get that. But, they should at least be entertaining and this book wasn't.

REDEMPTION GAMES redeems John Rain series

What did you love best about Redemption Games?

I've tried the John Rain books before and wasn't a big fan, but then I tried the Ben Treven series and wanted more (there are only two so far). So, I went back to John Rain now that Barry Eisler is narrating them - WOW! What a difference. I'm now on a marathon and Love this series. I guess the reader really does make all the difference. This was such a good book. Great story, easy to follow and fast paced. Can't get over the difference, last Rain book I listened to I thought was boring, I'm relistening now and want them all.

Have you listened to any of Barry Eislers other performances before? How does this one compare?

Barry Eisler narrates wonderfully. He did a smart thing reading his own works. I can't believe these are the same books. Five star listening material!

Good book in the series

Eisler narrating his own work is fantastic. reads right from the emotional source of the character.

Good story overall, but make sure to listen to the series in sequence. Some of the deeper context of the story does not make sense without it.

I am looking forward to listening to the next one.

If you could sum up So Sure of Death in three words, what would they be?

What was one of the most memorable moments of So Sure of Death?

I burst out laughing when the Trooper is invaded in his small bunk by two women & a kid. Did I mention the bunk is in a tiny soggy fishing boat that's slowly sinking into the harbour??

Which scene was your favorite?

The Trooper, who is phobic about airplanes, riding the pontoon of a seaplane & jumping off to capture a murder suspect riding an ATV.

Any additional comments?

A good story about small town life in the back woods of Alaska with all it's inbred problems & racial misunderstandings. The author doesn't side with either culture but treats them both with dignity, humor & realism.

2 mysteries, character insights and rapid action

I liked Liam Campbell a little better in this book than in the first. I think there is hope for his redemption after all. It was refreshing to see that the pain Liam and Wy caused through their affair is not glossed over and continues to have an impact on not just their behaviour but their sense of who they are. Meeting Liam's father helped round him out and the addition of another trooper to the post gave a more realistic context for assessing him.

Dana Stabenow delivers two murder mysteries to move the plot along this time - a whole family killed on a fishing boat and a researcher killed at an archaeological dig. Both are well thought through, with multiple who-dunnit candidates and good local colour but for me Stabenow's strength lies in her willingness and ability to make me feel the emotional weight of the extinction of a whole family.

On the whole this remains a light, enjoyable read, with lots of jumping out of planes and on to boats and ruining of uniforms at a brisk pace. There are moments of introspection that make the action matter more and there is a continuous and skilful development of my knowledge of the local cast of characters that promises to build the books into a rich world rather than just a series of solved murders.

I'm looking forward to reading the next one.

Twist & Turns

Great story, I always enjoy my evaluation against the end of the story. Descriptive manner of characters, events & emotions helps one understand the Alaskan culture and Marguerite Gavin--- brings the story to life.

Great writer, mediocre narrator

The story is good enough that most of the time the flaws introduced by the narrator can be overlooked.

Like the Alaskan setting.

I like the Liam series. The narrator has a tone for the way she ends sentences that bugs me a bit but she's okay otherwise. It did seem odd that a series on a male is narrated by a female but she did well with the voices. The mystery was good so a solid 4.

ONE OF WENTWORTH'S BEST COZEYS

Eternity Ring, is one of my favorites in Wentworth's 'Miss Silver' mystery series. Beginning with a snapshot during WWII of a long line of civilian refugees fleeing German invaders, a British soldier pretends to help, but instead steals and flees with the valuables of one of the exhausted refugee - a pre-war very wealthy woman.

Flash forward several years post war, to a small English village and, you guessed it, someone Is murdered and Miss Silver steps in to help figure out what is going on.

Wentworth offers consistently well crafted novels that usually follow particular formulas and themes, yet offer adequate variety in particulars of setting, people, and of course the why, who, and how of the murder.

There is a reason writers of this genre have come to be considered 'cozy mystery' writers. They are generally, gently engaging. Soothing.

I'm not sure why I find Wentworth so intriguing. Wouldn't have thought it possible and am not a 'cozy' fan in general, with quite a few exceptions, to be honest. More on Wentworth later.

Good, but not my favorite.

I normally love the Miss Silver series, but this one lacks something. I found myself having to keep going back over chapter upon chapter because my mind kept wandering. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy it, but it just wasn't her best work, in my opinion.

I would recommend it to any die-hard Miss Silver fans, but don't start the series with this book.

This series + this narrater = great entertainment

This series is best enjoyed with a really good narrator and Lisette Lecat is that. Her reading brings the characters to life. Since there are many unfamiliar places and names in Botswana hearing them pronounced correctly contributes to the enjoyment of these books. The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series is not "serious literature" but it is great fun and very entertaining. The characters are engaging and the insight into the day to day lives of "ordinary" people in Botswana is interesting. This book is the latest in the series and does not disappoint. I would recommend starting to listen to the series from the beginning since there are many references to events and people from the earlier books, so knowing some of the background of the characters does add to the enjoyment. It is like visiting old friends from far away.

In this 13th installment of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, MMa Ramotswe and MMa Makutsi have lots of problems to solve. One of the apprentices of the car repair takes on extra work from a friend for money, and it turns out he is working on stolen cars. Both he and his friend are arrested, and the apprentice turns out to have a very bad lawyer. MMa Ramotswe must help him find his way out of this problem. Then the matron of the orphanage is dismissed from service because the board of directors wants to build a new kitchen instead of each little house having its own kitchen and housemother, and she opposes this change. Mma Ramotswe investigates to find out what really is going on with the board, (shady business to be sure) and to help the matron get her job back. And Mma Makutsi and her newly wed husband are building a house, but theres something a little shady about the builder. And finally, Clovis Anderson, whose book on private detection both women have memorized to help them in their investigations, comes to Botswana coincidentally, (thats a little hard to swallow but for these books Ill suspend disbelief) and helps them with the investigations already mentioned, and they, and we find out about Clovis Anderson. Its the warmthand humor in these books that makes them so wonderful. And no one could read them better than Lisette Legat. Her pace may be too slow for some, (it normally would be for me), but the pace fits the books and the slower pace of Botswana. These are books that make you feel good, unusual for mysteries.

This series keeps getting better

I have enjoyed each book in this series, but this one has left me anticipating the next one even more. Juliet Blackwell is an author who writes entertaining books with light heartedness. Ms. Sands truly brings the characters truly alive.

I love the easy fun ride. Great story. Great series. Great Narration. Can't wait for the next.
