Hey Look, He's Not Wearing Any Clothes

Karen is the "kid" in the crowd who finally points and shouts that the emperor has no clothes. Rank and file workers have known or suspected as much for a long time, but the allure of a fad is just too much to resist. That shiny "thing" that well-meaning (or perhaps not) consultants dangle and twiddle in front of your eyes that will transform "your" company or entity into one of the great ones......It's now OK to say no, good judgment by people who know their business and their workers is the only reliable "secret" to success.

"Just Say No" to Consultant Perpetrated Nonsense

Managing is hard and it's especially hard to manage people. It is seductive for managers to reach out to consultants offering shiny, super-sounding solutions to make their lives easier. But pause before you buy. Karen Phelan does an amazing job of pulling back the covers on many of these solutions and showing the resulting bed bugs that infect organizations. Yikes. Best, she offers some relief for getting rid of them and trying healthier alternatives. The best part for me was when she takes my field, HR and leadership development, to task. We have unwittingly perpetrated many over-wrought, wooly headed performance management, succession planning and leadership development tools that managers are routinely asked to put up, and sadly, often do. Leaders, if something feels wrong and doesn't make good sense to you, reach for Karen's book. You just might get the insight and courage to "just say no" to nonsense.

Finally! Karen admits what company workers have been feeling and thinking in the last 30 years, but didn't dare say.

Over the last 30 or so years, quality and other Human Resource management systems have done a lot of damage in companies. On the surface, their goal appeared noble, but they resulted in changing behaviors that helped make companies successful into individuals gaming the system for their survival and personal benefit. With each new approach, company workers and middle management would attempt to comply, but would note with dismay the personal toll it took on many of their people. Karen's book finally puts it all into perspective and exposes the consultants for what they really were - well meaning people who thought they were helping companies but who were actually helping to destroy them.

Practical advice from a master of innovation

I knew picking up this book that the author, Sarah Caldicott, is the grand niece of Thomas Edison so I fully expected a love letter of sorts. What I found appealing was the immediate and direct application of Edison's practices to current day collaborative innovation efforts. Caldicott is passionate about her distant relative because she believes wholly in the great potential inherent in the successful collaboration he practiced:

Would you consider the audio edition of How to Not Suck as a Manager to be better than the print version?

I really liked the guys speaking voice...I mimick it, so that I can sound more like him when I talk to my employees at work. I like listening to it on the drive to work, because even though I already know these things, it's nice to hear a reminder...gets me in the right mindset.

I liked the part where he says managers who suck say they don't care about being friends with their employees...lol....because then he says he didn't SAY you need to be friends.yet, every time I meet managers who have problems, that's the first thing they say.haha.nice way to begin, I was hooked after that.

This book is worth two visits at least, you need to think about it. Think for the long in the tooth salesperson am i doing this every day, am i missing out things because they don't need to hear it, then miss the sale. this book makes you think about all aspects of selling nothing changes, just us as salespeople become complacent and lazy we the look to others to blame, every time we point that finger always remember how many are pointing back at us !!

for the new sales person looking for a way forward read or listen to this book as many times as you can don't be listen to local radio, or pop music, on your way the next pitch, listen to something like this and Close that sale stay focused, stay positive. you will WIN..

This book presents the complexities of executive compensation in an engaging, clear, easy-read manner. It takes a topic that has recently drawn its share of populist outrage and uses analytical approaches to provide reasonable ways to think about executive pay.

The author illustrates real world challenges Boards face in retaining executives and the disastrous results that can occur by "over-paying" (because of fear the executive may leave the company). Ferracone provides uncommon-sense, analytical approaches and reason to decision making. She demonstrates on an inflation-adjusted-basis executive pay is not much greater today than in the past; however, outliers need careful attention as they can become "Black Swan" events that make big headlines.

The book also discusses human elements that go into hiring and retaining the right executives - like the critical role of the executive's passion and drive and how compensation can complement, but not create, such factors within the executive. Overall, this is the best book I have read on executive compensation!

Finally. Methodology that actually is effective in executive comp.

As an executive recruiter who places game-changing CEOs and senior executives, this book serves as a game-change guide. This is not a "how-to" book. It's a tool for shareholders, board members, and others to evaluate the focus of their existing pay systems. Ms. Ferracone demystifies compensation by following a simple principle of alignment. Points such as "ad-hoc decisions are damaging to alignment" along with "absolute performance trumps relative performance" resonate with my philosophies. Across industry, Ms. Ferracone points out that pay systems "focused on short term and ignore the long term, people become a product of their culture". Fact that Performance-Adjusted Compensation (PAC) is a proven practice got me to realize that with the right analytic tools, performance can be a much more reliable measurement, thus removing emotion from the mix. Overall, a must read for those who have a stake in an enterprise that is dependent on its leaders to not just meet performance goals but to exceed them!
