Members Reviews:
An exciting fiction story based on Cattle Kate, the only woman hanged in Wyoming
This story contains a blend of fact and fiction. It is told in the point of view of a fictional heroine, Susan, who is determined to homestead, but finds that she has chosen a dangerous spot to build her new cabin. This fictional story threads the facts behind the true-life tragedy of the hanging of Jim and Ellen Averell (also known as Ella Watson and "Cattle Kate". The Averell's got on the wrong side of the local cattlemen, who desperately wanted their land for water and free grazing. The events leading up to the murders and the ensuing cover-up are recounted through the eyes of a fellow homesteader, who is also threatened. A tension-filled tale that is filled with careful historical detail, adventure and romance.
Excellent Mix of History and Fiction
No Escape: The Sweetwater Tragedy by Jean Henry Mead is an excellent story, combining history and fiction.
In the late 1800s, Ellen Watson Averell and James Averall are hanged for crimes they didn't commit in this historical account. Ms. Mead tells this true story through the eyes of a fictional character named Susan Cameron.
The cattlemen in the Sweetwater area of Wyoming will have things their way, no matter what has to be done, including lying, cheating and stealing.
Jean Henry Mead took me on a long journey with these characters, both real and fictional, that I won't soon forget. The injustice these people suffered was heartbreaking.
I highly recommend No Escape: The Sweetwater Tragedy to readers who enjoy history, fiction and wonderful characters. You'll put the book down and remember these events for a long time.
An excellent historical novel
