Great reading, a real page turner!

Full of suspense

A rousing adventure, well-told, and full of fantastic characters

I took a bit of a chance on this one, not knowing anything about the author, and being much more a fan of pirates than Civil War drama, but it paid off. The Abduction of Smith and Smith was a rousing adventure, well-told, and full of fantastic characters - both scoundrels and heroes.

Rashad Harrison wastes no time throwing us into the deep of things, inviting us to bear witness to the back-alley press gangs of the time. It's an interesting scene, complete with some solid banter between the abductors, leading us into both a bit of mystery and foreshadowing of the Smiths' shared fate.

I liked Jupiter (former plantation slave) far more than I did Archer (Confederate soldier and former slave owner), but I suspect that's entirely how we're expected to feel. After all, the former is simply looking to be reunited in freedom with his wife, while the latter is on an opium-fueled quest for revenge. Needless to say, neither man finds what they're looking for, ending up instead as very reluctant sailors.

There's a lot going on in this story, often at a breakneck pace that barely allows for a breath, much less any serious retrospection. It's also a rough story, as one might expect, marked by the capricious whims of the high seas and the cruel desires of those who sail them. Captain Barrett keeps the whole thing on course, providing a scandalous (and often hilarious) counterpoint to the Smiths. It's probably wrong to like a pirate captain quite so much, but he's entirely open about his crimes, and just as honest about his motivations. Along the way, we get something of a mismatched buddy comedy with the Smiths - marred by ugly memories as it may.

Freedom Priceless.

What a great story. I have read both books in this series and loved them both. They are wrote so you can read them separately. I think if you read one you will Haverford the other one. I know I did. Read the story of the Penbrooks from1848 to1951. Even though this is fiction many of the things depicted did happen to people that lived in the south in this time period. You will find yourself angry, sad, happy, and a laugh here and there. Loving someone is not always easy or convenient neither is going against the status quo. I love how the author shows the good,the bad and the ugly of this time in our history. Let us never forget to see people for who they are not just the color of their skin. I may not agree with how the sovereignty of God is explained in this book but I do believe that God will guide us and show us the way. Man causes the pains of this world not

God. The Lord is mention in this series but they are not preachy. Recommended reading for anyone who likes historical romance. There are scenes of violence but not overly graphic just what is needed to depict the time period. No foul language. Yes the n word is used because it was used . Well written and worth the time to read.

Wonderful finale to a great series

The Color of the Soul and Freedom of the Soul are the only books I've read by this author and I absolutely loved them. These stories were filled with characters you will love and characters you will abhor. These stories alternate back and forth in time between pre and post-Civil War and predate the Civil Rights movement in the late 1940s through early 1950s. Many parts are difficult to read, which include the evil institution of slavery, racism, and the rise of the Klan, but love always wins. I highly recommend this story, but you must read The Color of the Soul first. They are great novels.

Wow!! Loved it.

I pray that my great-grandmother's , both of whom were biracial, did not go through the pain and suffering that these characters went through, but I fear that they did. Life on the plantation could have been just about working hard for others to benefit from your labor, free of charge. But the owners, most of them, made life miserable for the people who worked to make them rich. I think I would have stayed on the land after emancipation and share cropped until I died, rather than going to a place I knew nothing about.

Excellent book - Page turner for sure!

This was a great book. It has a little of everything - intrigue, romance - lots of twists and turns!! It is a good, clean book with no curse words and no explicit sex at all - not even close. I wish books would be RATED - LIKE MOVIES, so you know ahead whether you want it or not.

Mystery in the time of witch hunts!

In 1684, Windbridge, CT, Albert Spijker and his 11 year old sister Joanna find a dead man in a nearby field. Before they can bury him, he comes back to life. While that is indeed a strange thing, the kids invite him home anyway.

Told from the dead mans point of view, we learn about his new life, and a little about his old one. Eventually, Joanna names him Vincent after a cat a cousin once had. The parents, Willem and Katherine, are a bit suspicious of Vincent at first. Eventually it becomes apparent that Vincent is a gentle person.

In this languid tale, Vincent is the intriguing star. I was caught up in his character wanting to know more about his past, how he came to be hung, why he came back to life, and what the future had in store for him. Vincent has an empathic connection with those people around him. At first, it is rather disconcerting for the man but eventually, he gets it under control.

Its a time of witch hunts and hangings in Connecticut. So the Spijkers are rather closed mouth about where they found Vincent and in what state he was in. Years later, Vincent is the familys farm hand and Joannas protector. Hangings still occur. Vincent isnt aging and this is starting to be noted by folks outside the Spijker family.

While the pace is rather slow in this story, and one could argue that not much happens, I still found something charming in this tale. I put it down to Vincent and all the mystery that surrounds him.

I won a copy of this book.

Narration: S. W. Salzman makes a good Vincent. He was really good at imbuing certain scenes with emotion, especially those focusing on Vincent and his struggles.

A wonderful vignette.

While the performer struggles to maintain his tone in a few places, the story is well crafted and great for a bit of light reading. I'm looking forward to Washburn's next literary work.

not really sure what to think.

I kind of felt like this story had no beginning and no end, but maybe that's the point. The life of Vincent spiker is a weird one. He dies several times and then comes back to life. He doesn't know how and he doesn't know why.

I liked the narrators voice.

I just wish there had been some kind of reasoning or something..... alot of left unanswered for me.

Good read

Fascinating read. Gives the reader an insight into what it was like during apartheid in South Africa. Also a look at how things can be for an adopted child who doesn't feel like she belongs.

Really, really good

Celia Mphephu works for the Steiners. They're living in a white suburb in South Africa. Celia has a daughter, Miriam, and she loves her more than anything in the world. It's the beginning of the sixties and unrest grows in the country. So much that Mr. and Mrs. Steiner don't feel safe any longer. They want to go to England and because they don't have any children of their own they ask Celia if they can adopt Miriam. They will give her a secure future with more education than she'd ever been able to get in South Africa. Celia has to make the most difficult decision of her life...

Miriam doesn't like her life in England very much. She stands out and people aren't always friendly to her. She also misses her mother. She tries to live her life, but she doesn't feel complete. That's why she eventually decides to go back to South Africa to look for her roots.

Shifting Colours is an impressive story about a mother and a daughter who are separated. Celia has to make a difficult decision and she does that out of love, which is awful and beautiful at the same time. The situation in South Africa is scary, she fears for her daughter, and I could totally imagine that. It must be really hard to live in a country that has such strong foundations based on inequality. I felt so bad for her and for everything she had to go through. I wanted Miriam to be safe, but my heart broke when they were separated.

I highly recommend this great novel. The writing is really good, it makes the reader feel everything that's going on so well. There are two voices, Miriam's and Celia's. I think that they were cleverly intertwined. I immediately loved both of their personalities. I cared for them and that made me feel emotionally attached to the story straight away. It left such a deep impression on me.

I will admit I do not read fiction very often. But every once in a while, I find myself wanting to get lost in a story, engrossed in the lives and events of others. I have been enjoying the blog of Emily T. Wierenga for some time. So when I heard she had written a novel, I did not hesitate to pre-order it.

âA Promise in Piecesâ was a wonderful and heartwarming story covering a span of fifty years in the life of Clara, a nurse during WWII. It is a story of family dynamics, heartbreak and love, loneliness and friendships, purpose and destiny. I found myself drawn to each of the characters, loving them and wanting them to find the happiness they longed for with each other.

Emily weaves the events so emotionally rich. She brought a deeper understanding and appreciation of a war which occurred before my lifetime. Emily unfolds a picture of the pain and horrors of war through the thoughts of Clara, who cares for the injured viewing them as âsomeoneâs baby who once laughed and gurgled and rolled.â (page 41)

We come to understand there is a godly balance between both love and justice.

We discover that trust truly is âlearned and practiced in the momentâ (page 61). Perhaps only moment by moment.

Claraâs desire, to bring a home made quilt to the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, takes her on a trip which includes each member of her family. âA Promise in Piercesâ is the story of this special quilt. We come to gain a beautiful picture of life through the insights Clara shares about her quilt and her own life â

This is a story of hope, the chance to do life again, to do it over. It is a story of love and forgiveness. And of coming full circle.

This is the story about Oliver as much as it is of Clara. Oliver, a quiet sort of a man, who teaches us it is possible to be âquiet and yet love the Lord with a loud kind of loveâ. In fact, Oliver will challenge us to become just this very sort of person.

This was a book I did not want to come to finish as I did not want to close the cover on each of its characters.

New York City author Anthony Robert Allen makes his literary debut with an exceptionally fine novel that is based on the `what if' concept - having the possibility to correct wrongs or change life by going back in time and doing things differently. The story is solid, the writing excellent (Allen is a college administrator!) and the novel is labeled `historical fiction'. Having read and enjoyed his book, this reviewer looked for more information about the genesis of the novel: `My goal was to present a family history book to my immediate family as a present for Christmas in 2013. I hired genealogists in the U.S., Ireland, and the Caribbean. As the story started to come together, I uncovered some interesting things in terms of ethnicity and religion. My Irish ancestry can be traced back to the late 1700s in Ireland. Each of my Irish family lines stayed throughout the Great Famine in the 1840s, but then left for the United States over the next 20-30 years. Some of my ancestors went to Chicago, which had a tremendous Irish population, and they were in the city during the Great Chicago fire of 1871. Others went to New York around the time of the Draft Riots in 1863, which pitted the Irish against the blacks. My Irish line has been consistently Catholic over the years. While the Irish side didn't offer so many surprises, my "other side" did. I have one line of Sephardic Jews that I can trace back to Portugal in the 1500s. This branch of the family owned slaves in St. Domingue (modern-day Haiti) just before the slave revolution, eventually intermarried with a mulatto line of former slaves, and became Anglican from that point forward. I have another branch of my family tree that I can trace back to the marriage of a white planter to a free woman of color on the island of Nevis in the Caribbean in the early 1800s. This line was also Protestant. Life, of course, is so much more than ethnicity and religion, and the stories I uncovered--which are very well-documented --are much more sensational than ordinary. My family has been both poor and wealthy and no stranger to scandal.

The book brought back my own memories of growing up. The story pulls you along a nostalgic trail but with the foreshadowing of menace all around at the same time

The reading brings the book alive as you hear the characters speaking and feel the tension in the action.

Jose. He seems more sensitive, somehow less street smart, but very wise underneath all that.

Great evocative writing!

The author has really captured what it was like to be a young boy in the 50s. The story draws you in from start to finish, and the narrator definitely does the story justice. A great read!

A very interesting tale.

Hugh and Jack really come of age in an intellectual sense during this tale. They fight for freedom both physically and mentally. The Stamp Act has brought out the best and the worst of the actors on both sides of the ocean.

The arguments for and against the Stamp Act are enlightening. It compares to modern arguments about 'taxing the rich'; even total confiscation wouldn't cover the expenses of government for more than a couple weeks but admitting that fact doesn't stop the argument.

On the human side; we learn much more about Dogmel Jones and Hugh finally gets a love interest. This story can still stand on its own, but this is accomplished by much repetition of segments from earlier books.

Looking forward to the final book, this has been a very interesting tale.

It is a great series, it has certainly enough suspense and some great characters. There is something about the style that makes it a little harder to read than say Andy Weir's The Martian, altough that is really just a feeling, I can't explain how.

A little tedious covering Parliament and Colonial positions on the Stamp Act. Lots of oration and dialogue revealing the steps that resulted in repeal of the Act but opened the doors for revolution.

Tensions Rising

Relations are getting more tense between the colonies and the Crown. Very well-written historical novel with the history we all should already know, but will never learn in a government school!

More of the same

This series is starting to feel a little soap-operish. The characters a little droll but yet I'm still hooked. Gonna download the next one...
